Just wanted to note that you shouldn't loosen your axle nuts at all. Hand spin is in no way indicative of how your bearings perform. By loosening the axle nuts you will actually decrease performance and negatively impact the lifespan of components. Always make sure they are tight, and ignore the freespin myth. Other than that, appreciate your channel!
Just was listening to your video and wanted to comment on the speed ring advice. Nowadays, speed rings really aren’t necessary with proper bearing design. The times when you need them will be on bearings that aren’t already spaced properly, and that’s going to include most bearings that don’t come with built-in style bearing spacers. In almost every built-in I’ve ever seen, you’re going to get an extra mm or so out of that outer edge of the inner race, which is doing the exact job that you described is the job of the speed ring-forcing the bearing to sit as flush as possible and to give some space between the truck axle facing interface and the shield of the bearing. What would cause slow-down there is if the shield were rubbing on the face of the hanger. The inner race of the bearing is not designed to spin, so it’s perfectly fine to butt that thing up against the hanger face nice and tight (unless you’re getting binding due to improper spacing, as you mentioned). Great videos! Thanks for all the hard work and dedication!

Just wanted to say hi . I came across your video about week ago surfskating in bowls and how you learned in 30 days so I went out got me the same board your showing in this video so glad you made this video I’m 50 but in good shape always wanted to ride the bowl like you do. But only ever did the cruise thing got a few hamboards my favorite is the biscuit. Just wanted to say so glad I found your Channel. Thanks for all the great info. Can’t wait to get pumping.🤞🏼
How’s the surf skating going? I just tried my friends board for the 1st time. It was fun & scary. I’m an intermediate transition skater, but taking the surf skate to the bowl was scary.
Steve! Newbie here. Thanks for this! I was ready to give up on my Yow Huntington with cinetic wheels because the things just won’t roll well after pumps. I watched this video, and jeeeeez found out my wheel spin stops within 3 secs. I got mine from SkatePro and realized how fricken awful the bearings were. Slapped some Reds on these and danggg I love surfskating again. Also, the S5 squeaks right outta the box like you said. I couldn’t find a paraffin wax but turns out candle wax/shavings worked. (Not the soy ones but the birthday candle type ones) But yeah thanks! Wouldn’t have known!
Hello Steve!! I'm a newbie too. I bought the CARVER 31.25" KNOX PHOENIX CX a few days ago and it arrived yesterday. I was impatient to try it, but the front mechanism is very rigid (it is impossible to turn it with my hand) and my rear wheels stopped within 3-4 seconds. There is also the squeaking sound you mentioned. I don't know if it is for this reason, I tried pumping while driving but it doesn't accelerate!! This video is perfect for me. I will try the steps here and try again. I hope the reason why I cannot accelerate is due to missing adjustments. 😊 I have benefited a lot from your videos throughout this process. Definitely try bronson raw bearings. They are superior to any bearing I’ve used in my life. Thanks for the set up advice. It added a bit more play to my emerald peak carver. It now feels closer to my Yow and swell tech.
After seeing this video everytime I see someone with a squeaky board I smile to myself. Fortunately mine didnt squeak but I did need to back the wheel nut off to get good spin. Thanks!
Hi I have a mechanical engineering baclground. Please know that some bearings don't roll when not under load. They are always specified for a weight range and this might be the weight of the board or the person. So sometimes the bearing doesn't spin if you pull the wheel, but eith the load of a person they might be great. These are not necessarily expensive industry grade bearings. Sometimes companies have to source these things creatively and so you might have these. But that should not be seen as a quality problem. They are oftentimes more efficient.
Looking forward to a review on the Bolsa. I have held it and it feels on the heavy side. I personally don’t like heavier boards for surfskating. I put a YOW Meraki system on a Loaded Omakase deck and it felt very sluggish. Omakase deck is a lot lighter than Bolsa deck though. There is something to be said for letting it squeak as it will wear in faster. It is like any hinge be it on a door or a folding knife. Though squeaking is irritating especially starting out when you're trying to avoid any attention. Another school of thought says if you want it to wear in for your environment and your use then "oiling" or "waxing" too soon means it will take 10x longer to wear to perfection. Different school of skateboarding, or life in general, I know now days it is all about 'appearing/sounding' perfect out of the box. Plenty of the best skaters, and craftsmen, in history let it squeak till it settles and when it is "just right" THEN add layers of protection to keep the product in that worn in sweet spot for as long as possible. If it works for ship builders and Shinto shrine master craftsmen there is a lot of historical data indicating it gets results. You can't rush or muscle in on sweet spots even if all over the net people are buying tools and just after unboxing taking to them with other tools before 6mths of use. That said for amateur users it isn't like they will notice either/or.
Hi Steve, thanks for helping newbies. One comment, i think the speed rings are very important as they are the same diameter as the axle of the bearing. Therefore they act as a spacer between the bearing and the bolt / hanger. Without speed ring, you may get contact between those and the rubber ring of the bearing
Great video as always! 👏👏👏 Now I now how to fix that squeaking on my board 😄 Q: What about regular maintenance? I’ve noticed that my wheels (especially around the bearings) got quite dirty after some rides. How to clean the bearings and how often? 🤔 I’ve read that you can oil the bearings too as the board might ride slower than it should. Any suggestion? Perhaps a follow up video for newbies? 😅
Hi. I've watched a lot of your videos... very helpful... I've been riding for 3 years and I started in my 50s .I've got about 8 longboards and a Bolsa carver .. I've experimented with different boards trucks adjustments etc as you say ...can I ask ....you loosen the front trucks on the Bolsa..how about the back trucks...am I correct in that you should keep those tighter for better pumping ? Thanks for your videos as it helped me not getting het up with thinking 50 is a bit late to start. Ha ! I love it good exercise but also relaxing. I'm lucky I live on the coast in Kent England...Best wishes. Mitch
Steve, i also have CX trucks. do you make the front and back trucks/bushings equally tight? or the front looser than the back? thanks for the great videos!
@@asaphe21 That is the SAME question I was about to type!! How does the "tightness" of the rear truck affect the turning action of the front trucks (especially when the front trucks are spring-based)?
Hi! One question, in a slide truck is the same? I saw the truck is different and I don't want to do nothing wrong 😅 thanks a lot I like your videos so much!
@SurfskateLove, a question. I've adjusted my new CX Carver based on this video (thanks to all of your work on this channel). The repetitive issue I get is, that the front kingpin knot gets loose now, after some time I spent riding my surfskate. So I have to tigthen it up after 1 hour of riding. Any recommendation how to fix this?
I’m new to surfskate but street skateboarded for over 25 years… You need to break in bushings. So tighten the bushing to where you like and start riding. Break in period is usually a day or two of a couple of hours of riding… but they will still be breaking for the first 10 days… that’s one reason why professionals don’t change their trucks as often as their decks and wheels.
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, Thank you so much for the video, it was awesome.I am interested in the bolsa and the trip collab! I already own so many carvers and loaded boards and Landyatchtz!
for those out there who dont have paraffin wax laying aroung, graphite powder is a pretty good lubricant. just crush up the lead of a softer pencil and sprinkle it as needed
Unfortunately quality control is not that great for a lot of these brands. I would check the following as well (all based on experience): - See if the tips of the hangers that go into the pivot cups are smooth. If not, than the pivot cup will be trashed within a few hours of riding. Might have to use a piece of sandpaper to smoothen them a bit. It’s aluminum, so not that hard. - On a YOW you might consider replacing 2 of the bolts on the front truck (the ones towards the middle of the deck). They only go in roughly halfway into the baseplate. Longer ones and then put a nut on top. - I raised all the bolts on my decks by putting a small washer under them so they are raised above the deck a bit. Improves grip a lot, especially on YOW decks. Might have to use longer bolts in some cases. - Open up YOW Meraki system and put some lithium grease on the 2 washer/bearing sets and on the spring. - Personal choice, break warranty on a Smoothstar and put grease on the sets of washer/needle bearings. I don’t think that the official Smoothstar advice is going to work for the big needle bearing inside the Thruster (drip a bit of oil from above without opening the Thruster). Smoothstar has super friendly prices if you need to replace these bearings😱. - Start buying spare parts when you see them immediately😂. Availability is very poor from the surfskate brands and their prices are typically outrageous. Equal or better quality from third party suppliers, often at a fraction of the price. Case in point, YOW washer set. The price is hilarious. - Consider replacing wheels, bushings, bearings, pivot cups with better quality third party ones. - To be honest, don’t buy a complete board. Source everything yourself for a better price, better quality experience😂.
💯 Love it, man. Funny on the YOW Meraki. I actually had included that in this video. But it made it way too long, so I split them up: th-cam.com/video/uzOM_6szn2A/w-d-xo.html And you're so right. Unfortunately, newbies don't have a clue how to build their own. Unless you have a solid skateboarding/longboarding background and you do good research and know how to listen to, I think you really have to start with a complete.
@@SurfskateLove Hard to pick 1 complete to recommend. I love my Smoothstar for extreme carving. I ride every morning 30 minutes or so and afterwards take a shower at the beach. I love my YOW Malibu for longer distance, still great carving. I ride every evening with music for an hour or so. If I had to pick just 1 complete, then I would say a YOW with a wheelbase at the wider end of the “magic formula” for somebody. At the end of the day, it depends mainly on how you like to ride. However if you are new to it and have no clue then I would go with that. Which one would you pick Steve? Can’t go Soulboardy😂
This may surprise you, but for newbies especially I'm going with a Carver CX system all the way. 1. It's the simplest system out there, and it works awesome. (The more I ride surfskates, the more I pretty much just ride either a Meraki or a CX). You won't run into the maintenance issues you have with the more complicated systems. 2. I prefer Carver decks WAY over YOW. I don't like a single thing about the 4 YOW decks I've had, and I'll never buy another. On the other hand, I've bought 8 Carvers and I love them all. 3. I think Carver has the best, highest quality complete systems. Deck, wheels, measurements, everything. I feel way more confident recommending a Carver over a YOW to almost any rider. Especially with YOWs new piece of shit URA wheels. The only thing I even want from YOW anymore is the Meraki. 4. Here's a big one: When you understand my wheelbase formula and you have a solid understanding of both the Carver and YOW landscape (in terms of their deck options and the measurements of those decks), you understand that riders have a much better chance of a Carver fitting them than a YOW. YOWs dimensions are all over the board, and no one has a clue how to translate them into the ride, and YOW has zero guidance whatsoever. Carver doesn't have good guidance either, but because their trucks accommodate a wider stance on a shorter board, it's much more likely that a newbie will get one that fits. Whereas with a YOW, as I've personally experienced, most people will buy based on length, only to discover that the wheelbase on their model is too narrow for them. Smoothstar: Pure surf trainer. Stable for newbies, and I've met newbies who love it. But limited to small areas. Not a cruiser. And I hate their company. They don't give a shit about customers. All they care about is making money. Slide: Okay, not nearly as good as a Carver. And so worth it to spend an extra $50 to get a Carver over a Slide. Waterborne: I think it's a piece of shit. 😂And it's a paradoxical product because it's intended to be that cheap entry into surfskating for newbies. But it's very difficult to work with, especially newbies, and EXTREMELY difficult to get the right measurements on a Waterborne set-up. And since we're talking about only completes, the Waterborne piece of shit carbon completes only make the piece of shit adapter even worse. 😂 SwellTech: For advanced riders and surf training only.
@@SurfskateLove I see where you are coming from. I’m waiting for your CX Bolsa review. That might be my last buy. Got a Smoothstar, 3 YOWs and a Slide. I started on a Smoothstar. That was fun the first day😂. That board went flying all over the place. Btw, I raised all the bolts on my YOW decks with a washer ring underneath the bolt on top of the deck. Much improved grip. But not great decks, especially the smaller sizes.
Hi same love from me. Great work and so much help to get started. I have set up my first 2 boards now a YOW Padang Stock and a YOW la Santa with Carver CX. Even I am 100kg the Carver CX feel too tight to get going especially also for turns in ramps. So I assume I need to gear up bushings. Do you have a recommendation for firmness and model to fit? Wheels will be the seismic 66 since i am afraid the carver park are to small for the way to the park:-)
Ah and your videos made my son of 8 join in! He skipped his scooter! So much thanks for that! His landyachts 29 I have put a waterborne adapter with the rail which is crazy good for his 30 kg!
I just got a used Carver CX and the previous owner didn't take care of the bearings and has everything over tightened. So I appreciate this video greatly. Question though about the tightness of the rear truck. Do you also recommend loosening it the same amount/method as the front?
Thank you for this vid!! I just got a second-hand Mindless Surfskate, but I can't get the front truck off. The piece that sits in the pivot cup seems to be stuck in there... Do you have any tips for removal, please? I saw you had Mindless Surfskate in your 15 Surfskates reviewed video - which is how I decided to go for it! Thanks
Thank you so much for your videos. I have a question about the Carver CX bushings. Is it possible to use third party ? Do the matching bushings have a specific designation ? Thanks in advance! Stay healthy!
Steve, I just asked this question at another skateboarder's channel because his vid is on the Penny High-Line surf skate. I haven't been able to find any literature on this, but am wondering for complete surf skate newbies such as myself, when starting out should I tighten up the Waterborne's surf and rail adapters as well as the bushings on my skateboard trucks to increase the turning resistance until I become more familiar and comfortable riding a surf skate? Thanks for your thoughts, Steve. Liked and subscribed to your channel!
I see in the Carver CX there are upgraded bushings. If you're a heavier rider above 220 lbs how does one tell if they need a harder duro bushing for their surfskate? How does one tell if bushings need to be changed at all with a surfskate? Previously with regular skateboard TKP trucks if I get wheel bite or if the lean isn't gradual I change the stock 90A cushions to something harder or if I have to tighten down to the point where the bushing is looking like a burger I change the cushion out.
Hey Steve great example with the Bolsa. Just one question. In your experience which truck for surfskate has lasted the most? in comparison with the wavecam system of the Original trucks which break almost instantly I would prefer the CX bushing system for a long lasting truck. Am I right?
do i need to purchase a surf skate to learn or can I get the water born surf kit and install on my long board, I am new on this surf skate . what is your recommendation, thanks for your advise, god bless
Which wheels should begginer use? I don't feel secure yet to get the hard ones, because of speed they may help generate? I bought used YOW pyzel and need to change them
Some advice on proper foot placement on the Loaded Bolsa please. I ride regular and my back foot feels great. Locked in place, very ergonomic. My front foot feels strange since I normally have my foot perpendicular to the board. I feel the wheel wells force me to have a 45 degree angle where my heel is behind the wheel well and the ball of my foot is in front of the wheel well. It is just my riding style? Or is it actually better for me to have the ball of my foot actually on top of the wheel well? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hey Steve, question: I bought also some knuckles for my CX. But I find that the big washer that you need to lift at the front truck like in the video scratches while turning the truck the inside of the truck. Have you also experienced this problem? Maybe the nut is not tightened enough?
I have the oxelo Carv which basically has the CX truck and my issue is that the kingping nut keeps getting loose while I ride. I either tighten it a lot, which I don't like the feeling or have it a bit loose but need to tighten it every 15 minutes of heavy carving. Any suggestion?
The Oxelo Carve 540 uses a bushing-based truck and not a spring (that's why it looks similar to a CX truck but it's not as good). The only thing I can think of that could help is replacing the stock bushings with softer ones to make it lean more even if you tighten the kingpin nut.
Just wanted to note that you shouldn't loosen your axle nuts at all. Hand spin is in no way indicative of how your bearings perform.
That said for amateur users it isn't like they will notice either/or.
excellent - ive been surfskating for 10 days now.
No need for speed rings with these bearings
@@rvdt4ever that’s correct, it’s "built in" with that type of bearing, as are the spacers.
steve, hello!
make the same detailed video with the C7 truck
dismantling Carver Greenroom...
please!!!
Check out this one as well as some of his other videos on dissecting trucks and maintenance: th-cam.com/video/fZDiAIZiINY/w-d-xo.html
Great video as always! 👏👏👏
Now I now how to fix that squeaking on my board 😄
Q: What about regular maintenance? I’ve noticed that my wheels (especially around the bearings) got quite dirty after some rides. How to clean the bearings and how often? 🤔
I’ve read that you can oil the bearings too as the board might ride slower than it should. Any suggestion? Perhaps a follow up video for newbies? 😅

@@SurfskateLove awesome, thanks! 😁
Mitch
Hey Mitch, it's just personal preference. Personally, I ride with both my front and rear nuts as loose as possible.
@@SurfskateLove Thank you for your reply . I'll experiment a bit with that. Best wishes. Mitch
Finally, a use for my weed shaped skate wax. :D No more squeak.
Steve, i also have CX trucks. do you make the front and back trucks/bushings equally tight? or the front looser than the back?
thanks for the great videos!
Hey , I have the same doubt
@@asaphe21 That is the SAME question I was about to type!! How does the "tightness" of the rear truck affect the turning action of the front trucks (especially when the front trucks are spring-based)?
Personally, I ride both as loose as possible.
Thank you!!! Awesome video!
Just started surf skating. I was drawn to the unthink boards wheels. Which brand and hardness are they? Thanks for the information.
Great video. Could you also use something like synthetic grease in the pivot cup?
Yeah, lithium grease or marine grease work.
Perfect video! Any tip to stop the front truck nut that keeps getting loose? Thx!
If it keeps loosening, it's probably time to replace it. The nylon on those nuts wears out and you have to replace them periodically.
вчера купил свой первый carver cx. посмотрел это видео. мне очень помогло настроить свою доску. спасибо большое!
Приятно слышать! Спасибо, что поделился!
Thank you for such a helpful video!
Do you leave the rear truck loose like the front truck? thank you for posting this video!
Yes.
Hi! One question, in a slide truck is the same? I saw the truck is different and I don't want to do nothing wrong 😅 thanks a lot I like your videos so much!
th-cam.com/video/G83eYWZbxm8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tm7dGuxds1OYpGRF
The Slide doesn't have a pivot cup on front.
@@SurfskateLove thanks. yeah, so, how I put the parafine? Or in the slide is not important?
Super helpful video
Thank you!
I’m new to surfskate but street skateboarded for over 25 years…
You need to break in bushings. So tighten the bushing to where you like and start riding. Break in period is usually a day or two of a couple of hours of riding… but they will still be breaking for the first 10 days… that’s one reason why professionals don’t change their trucks as often as their decks and wheels.
Will surf wax work in the pivot cup? I mean I’ve never heard of that other wax you say is a household item lol
Not sure on that because I don't know what's in surf wax. It's probably not a big deal and will work just fine.
Surf wax is sticky so proberbly make it worse, just use a candle wax
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, Thank you so much for the video, it was awesome.I am interested in the bolsa and the trip collab! I already own so many carvers and loaded boards and Landyatchtz!
for those out there who dont have paraffin wax laying aroung, graphite powder is a pretty good lubricant. just crush up the lead of a softer pencil and sprinkle it as needed
This worked wonders thx you so much 😁
Thank you! This is so helpful!
Unfortunately quality control is not that great for a lot of these brands. I would check the following as well (all based on experience):
- See if the tips of the hangers that go into the pivot cups are smooth.
But it made it way too long, so I split them up: th-cam.com/video/uzOM_6szn2A/w-d-xo.html
And you're so right.
SwellTech: For advanced riders and surf training only.
His landyachts 29 I have put a waterborne adapter with the rail which is crazy good for his 30 kg!
thank you for posting !!!
Thanks for this video!
Those look like Jehu v2 built in bearings so no speed rings?
Yep, exactly. I was surprised.
They have built-in speed rings, very easy to quickly change wheels
do you have a video with trucks that have a spring?
Really great video! 🤙
I just got a used Carver CX and the previous owner didn't take care of the bearings and has everything over tightened. So I appreciate this video greatly. Question though about the tightness of the rear truck. Do you also recommend loosening it the same amount/method as the front?
That's what I do, but it's just personal preference. Just play with it and see what you like best.
Thanks
I'm sorry but I would just have to see it.
Thank you so much for your videos. I have a question about the Carver CX bushings. Is it possible to use third party ? Do the matching bushings have a specific designation ?
Thanks in advance!
Stay healthy!
To my knowledge there are no aftermarket bushings that fit CX bushings precisely. This is something I'm working on with RipTide. ;-)
Thank you so much for this informative video, @surfskatelove! Do you have a link for the skate tool that includes the bearing press at minute 7:00?
Those are very common and there are lots of brands. Just search for skate tool with bearings press.
Will do. Thanks so much!
Sweet man thank you I just went from a waterborne to the cx…I’m running 75mm 81a wheels are those too big ? I messed up my order
I wouldn't run bigger than 70mm wheels on a surfskate, but some people do. You may need to add risers to eliminate wheelbite.
I am kind of fresh rider on surfskate and I have a question. Do you adjust your back truck also?
Yes, I make it as loose as possible as well. But just play with it and find your preference.
It's better to have the back truck a little tighter than the front truck..👆
At least a half a turn..👍
Steve, I just asked this question at another skateboarder's channel because his vid is on the Penny High-Line surf skate. I haven't been able to find any literature on this, but am wondering for complete surf skate newbies such as myself, when starting out should I tighten up the Waterborne's surf and rail adapters as well as the bushings on my skateboard trucks to increase the turning resistance until I become more familiar and comfortable riding a surf skate? Thanks for your thoughts, Steve. Liked and subscribed to your channel!
The Waterborne Surf Adapter is not adjustable, so you just have to get used to it.
Nicely done
Could you review the grasp surfskate please
I see in the Carver CX there are upgraded bushings. If you're a heavier rider above 220 lbs how does one tell if they need a harder duro bushing for their surfskate? How does one tell if bushings need to be changed at all with a surfskate? Previously with regular skateboard TKP trucks if I get wheel bite or if the lean isn't gradual I change the stock 90A cushions to something harder or if I have to tighten down to the point where the bushing is looking like a burger I change the cushion out.
You don't "need" to change them at all. You can get used to whatever you ride. It's just about finding your preference by experimenting.
Hey Steve great example with the Bolsa. Just one question. In your experience which truck for surfskate has lasted the most? in comparison with the wavecam system of the Original trucks which break almost instantly I would prefer the CX bushing system for a long lasting truck. Am I right?
CX all the way. Simplest, easiest to maintain, most durable.
Hey sorry for the Question. But where can I find the video for the Carver C7? Thank you!
Here you go, my friend: th-cam.com/video/fZDiAIZiINY/w-d-xo.html
thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!
The only subject you don't seem to have covered is skating surfaces. Am I wrong?
do i need to purchase a surf skate to learn or can I get the water born surf kit and install on my long board, I am new on this surf skate . what is your recommendation, thanks for your advise, god bless
You can definitely start with a Waterborne on your longboard! It's a great way to start.
Hi there, can candle from paraffine wax be used to get rid of squeaking?
Yep.
Which wheels should begginer use? I don't feel secure yet to get the hard ones, because of speed they may help generate? I bought used YOW pyzel and need to change them
Use whatever you have to start with. Why do you think you need to change them?

I'm sorry but I'm not quite understanding your question. I'd have to see a picture or video.
Can you make one for the smoothstar please
I have the oxelo Carv which basically has the CX truck and my issue is that the kingping nut keeps getting loose while I ride. I either tighten it a lot, which I don't like the feeling or have it a bit loose but need to tighten it every 15 minutes of heavy carving. Any suggestion?
You say the Carve truck is "basically the CX" truck, but it's actually very different and inferior. Don't know that there's any fix to that.
@@SurfskateLove uhm ok, it looked similar in camera to a non expert but still has a kingpin nut right? Any idea on how to solve the loosening?
The Oxelo Carve 540 uses a bushing-based truck and not a spring (that's why it looks similar to a CX truck but it's not as good). The only thing I can think of that could help is replacing the stock bushings with softer ones to make it lean more even if you tighten the kingpin nut.
I have that board, you might need to replace the nut.also i filed parts of the truck so it has a much better turning circle, rides great now
nice video man
Hey Steve, can you link the tools you are using for maintaining your boards?
It's just a basic T tool. You can get them on amazon very cheap.
@@SurfskateLove oh yea I figured it out ages ago haha thanks Steve
Could wax from a candle work as well? That's supposed to be paraffine wax ain't it?
Steve, is it worth to check Cris Mills surf skate program? Thanks!
Nope.
