The Calif. Zephyr in Ft. Morgan on 08June2024

- This morning's California Zephyr #5 arrived in Fort Morgan at 0540 MDT (4 min. early but slated as On Schedule by AMTRAK as departure time was also On Schedule). P42s #174 (in Phase VII livery) and #151 brought the typical 8-car consist to a stop with car 7 to the station ramp. There was one departing passenger and 3 new fares this morning. The other person is a local who appears at the depot from time to time.
We also get a brief from conductor Sam this morning. Neat! Thanks Sam!
When the time arrived for departure, the signal was given and on a clear signal at west Ft. Morgan CP the Zephyr rolled west toward its next stop at Denver's Union Station.
My thanks to the operating crew for the greetings and special thanks to Sam for the chat today.

Good afternoon, Curtis; Thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. I had a chance to chat with him a week ago but never caught his name. Mandy had provided that in a comment later that day. I am impressed with his people skills and as long as he maintains those, he will go far.
We just went under a severe thunderstorm warning for the next couple of hours. As long as the hail stay away, I'll tolerate the light and sound show if it includes moisture.
It is to be even nicer tomorrow. I'll take them.

We just off the east bound Zepher a couple weeks ago,it was a great ride and great personnel. Second Zephyr trip in a year,one west one east, will probably do it again sometime.
Nice conversation with Sam. One the advantages of the CZ being early.
That was an interesting encounter today. Even with the "Darwin Award" contestant. And the other interesting local.

Well that's something that they've had three train stations their. So anyway I hope you put the squeegee back where you found it. And he got all that time to hang out with the train gets early. Trade day and Franklin Park was really nice. They had a bunch of the CPK stuff. You know Canadian Pacific Kansas City railroad bridge. They had some of that they had a big metra train unfortunately no Amtrak or no vintage Santa Fe equipment or anything cool like that. But nonetheless we had a good time out there. And you know we took the metra the 7:30 a.m. train out of Union station. They have that under reconstruction again. So you know it's been like that for a year or two. And I was in the car with all the farmers. That they were younger people and boy everybody was foaming it up! And I really enjoyed hearing all that foaming going on.

The CPKC merger has produced a lot of media stuff. I am sure there was a lot.

Good morning, Gene; I thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. That was a nice station stop this morning. With the added dwell time for being early, the chat with Sam made it all worthwhile.
The added side stories were the "Darwin Award" bicyclist darting around the cross arms in front of the engine and the "caretaker" of the depot. Not quite sure what the story is there.
Anyway, there's always something different at the station.

Good morning Mike. The chorus is in fine form this morning. A beautiful sunrise for the Zephyr's arrival, today. Kind of a busy stop, too. WX back east must be pretty good for the early arrival. Hope it stays good for you, today. We hit 113, yesterday, but the humidity was only 11%. Expect 109, today. I'm finally hitting the sack now. It's my up all night, sleep all day season, now. You take care, stay safe and I'll check back next time I'm awake (chuckle).
Good morning, Phil; Thank you for dropping by along with the comments. We did break 100 yesterday and will be 20 degrees cooler today. Humidity was 15% and is now at 63% after a very brief "mudball" fall last night. Not quite rain and filled with Wyoming dust to make flying mudballs. Makes for wonderful scratches on the windshields and wiper replacement every other storm.

A good Saturday morning to you Mike from 70 clear mid Tenn. From sounds of the loco engines it must be up hill from there til over the continental divide. That would be the moffatt tunnel I believe. Good talk with Sam, he sounds like a likeable fella and should go far with Amtrak. Have yourself a good day in whatever you do.
Good morning, Ben; Thanks for tuning in along with the comments. That train has been climbing since it left McCook, NE. LOL. There is a grade elevation of about 5 ft. in less than one tenth of a mile at West Street where the rails climb above an irrigation canal just to the west of signal mast in the video. You are right about the Moffat Tunnel. This side is eastern slope or front range and at the west portal is western slope of the Rockies and the Colorado River Basin.
This was the second time I have had a chat with Sam. He has some great people skills. Much better than mine.

Good morning, Mark; Thanks for stopping by along with the comments. The "individual" has been around here for a while. A "local". Not quite sure what his story is. To add some fuel to your former programing, he had been around the depot as I arrived, trespassed across the tracks to the fuel station on the south side. Then returned with a squeegee to wash the windows in the waiting room. Thus, my statement to him about returning it to the fuel station. Note: He didn't as far as I know.
It was nice to chat with Sam and a great intro to him for everyone. I certainly liked the chat.
A bit cooler today by about 20 degrees. Should be nice until the wind kicks up later this afternoon. Oh well.

If that is main line track, it looks like it is in rough shape. Looks likes it needs a good grading with a regulator and tamping.
Good morning, Paul; Thanks for stopping by and he comments. I am not a track specialist but from the geometry techs I have chatted with say this sub is in better shape than a lot of them. I have watched videos of UP, CSX, CN, and NS "main lines much worse.
There is some maintenance being done this year with the tampers and ballast regulators as there is every year.
Now that BNSF bean counters have furloughed 6 thousand or more track maintenance workers, one can expect the track structure to become worse.
