The Calif. Zephyr in Ft. Morgan with P.V.s on 11JUNE2024

- Today's California Zephyr #5 made its station stop in Fort Morgan at 0541 MDT (5 min. early but On Schedule departure). P42s #202 & #50 brought the 10-car train to a stop with car 5 to the station platform for a total of 6 departing passengers, 4 from a sleeper and 2 from car 7 where Kelly was biding his time to departure.
When Kelly's digital pocket time piece displayed the departure time, he gave the high ball and on a clear signal the Zephyr rolled west toward Denver and its next stop at Union Station as it continues its trek to Emeryville by the bay.
The last 2 cars of the train were the "Patrick Henry Creative Productions" cars Evelyn and Warren Henry. They are two of the more colorful private rail cars that tag along with the Zephyr and other AMTRK trains.
My thanks to Kelly and the rest of the operating crew for the greetings this morning. I think that was Ollie in the cab today. If not, I apologize for that.

I am sure there is a lot that goes into the maintenance and upkeep of them as well as a staff to maintain and provide for the people who may be riding in style.

In just a few minutes, I can say good morning, Mike. The chorus was in fine form yesterday morning. A busy one for the Zephyr. I liked the varnish tagging along. I'd love to see a morning like that around here. Nuttin but clear skys and endless sun. Hit 110 with the same expected today. Take care, stay safe and I'll check back in next time I wake up (chuckle).

I don't think we will have another morning like this one for a while. Although not in the triple digits yet we will be near 100 F. today. AS with your area the saving grace is the very low humidity.

I thought you said Ollie was on Thursday... no Ollie signal this morning, (not that I catch it half the time) and really delayed for the response to Kelly as they left, AND no horn as they started to roll! Yep.. I notice these things now, thanks to you!
70° at 10 am here. Road trip today... headed to stay with friends in Indiana (on the train with me in October) before heading to Michigan for a dragon boat festival I help with. Little tourist town right on the lake, complete with a lighthouse. So beautiful there.

Good morning, Jean; I thank you for dropping by as well as the comments. I too watched them at Galesburg yesterday after I got my eyeballs back in my head. Had to scrape them off my monitor from the lens jerks as the Zephyr came into town. They don't adjust as well as they used to. Oh well.
Nope. No Olie signal from the cab and my statement was to the voice I heard as thy departed. Yep. There wasn't a double toot either. He isn't the only one who does that though. Yep. Thursday is/was his usual day thru here.

My first thought when I saw 10 cars in the consist was wow, traffic is really picking up. The private cars are beautiful. Aside from that though, I believe the CZ is Amtrak's most popular long distance train. Thanks Mike. Have a great day.

Didn't know which trin west from Chicago they would be included with. I was pumped when I saw them on the Zephyr yesterday. It was nice to see them in person gain here.

Oh well. Not enough head swiveling to catch it all. LOL! Again, I am not sure that was Ollie or if I offended the engineer by calling a name. Good morning, Robert; I thank you for tuning in along with the comments. I do like the ability to see what is coming this way by watching the V/R cameras at Galesburg and the Grab Bag as well. I saw these cars at Elkhart via the Grab Bag videos as they went west.
Unfortunately, my eyes are still resetting themselves after being ripped from their sockets yesterday on the Galesburg cameras. But I'll be watching again this afternoon from the lurking lounge.

Good morning, Jim; Thanks for stopping by along with the comments. Had thunderstorms here last night. No hail but plenty of rain. I think we are all done with that activity for a few days. Warmer today and 90s for the rest of the week. Drier as well.
I have seen those cars here at least once every year for the past several years. The owner gave both Marne and me thermos coffee mugs from the back patio one year. I would like to tour those cars just once.

Good morning, Robert; I thank you for looking in along with the comments. The sun is just now breaking thru the clouds, and I am sure the temp will be climbing quickly. The temp is currently 65 F at 0945 MDT. Mid 80s later and 90s for the rest of the week with a break on the weekend.
I will enjoy the dry but not necessarily the heat. LOL!

Yeah good evening Mike I see that there's the two cars at the end. And you know I'm catching you much later than usual. Just been out hustling around all day. Wack in the bushes and all that. So I'll be sleeping pretty well tonight I'm sure of that. I guess we're going to be getting that hot weather back my way starting tomorrow at least in the mid to upper '80s for a few days. Maybe 90 on the weekend.

Well this is about the third or fourth day that the zephyr got in a couple of minutes ahead of schedule.
Yep. They are gonna break a record if they keep this up.
Good morning Mike from sunny cool 61 mid Tenn. Yes, those 2 private cars are really class. Are they all the way from Chicago to Emeryville or drop off somewhere? These ontime arrivals(&early) are the absence of rail traffic i suppose.
Good morning, Ben; Thank you for stopping by along with the comments. I saw the private cars in Elkhart, IN on a very recent Grab Bag. I think they were going to Chicago then. I watched them again in Galesburg yesterday and noticed the owner step out for a look there. What a way to travel. I am unsure where they are headed and when or if they will return via the #6 Zephyr.
I don't think there has been much passenger work from Lincoln thru here. And from what I have heard, the slow orders have been cut back across Nebraska as well. There is still plenty of BNSF traffic thru here in both directions.

New to the channel, Hello...Is this train heading West to California or East to Chicago? I sometimes watch this train leaving La Plata Mo at around 2000 on a different channel so I'm thinking it's heading West...thank you
Good evening, Thomas; Thank you for looking in and the comments. The odd number trains are all headed west. This is the #5 California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville, CA.
The train you watch at La Plata is the Southwest Chief #3 or #4. Although they do run through Colorado they are in the far southeast part of the state.

He may n=have been entertaining guests as well. When I win the megabillion big bucks lotto and the Irish sweepstakes I would like to travel in a private railcar just once.

Good morning Mike another couple of questions from your friend in southeastern Tennessee. Number one do you know who owns those private cars and number two? Do they have to pay Amtrak to be on the end of an Amtrak train? Would like to know how they have to pay for their way Beautiful cars, though I would love to be on that end car with the open end and they do liner would be on the top of my bucket list. Those P.V. are owned by "Patrick Henry Creative Productions" They travel together as a sleeper and a day car. I believe the owner has them on the road for this trip and may be entertaining guests as well. Yep. There is a set fee for towing on a scheduled AMTRAK train. That fee is by the mile and the cars have to meet AMTRAK standards for HEP, sewage holding tanks and self-contained power away from the train. I don't know how much per mile that fee is.
There are several private cars that are for lease on round trips from several AMTRAK hubs. Most are members in a national railcar association and have web sites with info on leasing, dates and so forth. I would like to ride in one but would have to win the multi-megabillions lottery as well as the Irish Sweepstakes and a couple other lotteries first.
