A Calif. Zephyr in Ft. Morgan on 03JUNE2024

- Today's California Zephyr #5 made its station stop in Fort Morgan at 0701 MDT (1 Hr. & 20 Min. late). P42s #157 (with big scar on its nose) and #204 brought the 8-car train to a stop with cars 7 and 8 to the station platform for passenger service from both cars. There were 3 departing passengers from car 7 including one who tried to do a face plant stepping to the surface from the portable step. She was assisted to regain her step and stated that she was OK. Then 1 new fare joined the train at car 7.
Meanwhile, the local ambulance service was called and assisted a passenger from car 8 for transport to the hospital. There was also an entitled passenger that just had to inhale on a cigarette and was not assisting the EMTs but in the way of their efforts.
With the passenger completed, the high ball was given and on a clear signal the Zephyr departed for Union Station in Denver after a 2-minute delay in Fort Morgan.

Good morning, Mike. This morning’s #5 Zephyr stop is a good example of life on the rails, you never know what’s around the next bend or when someone will go off their own “tracks”. I caught glimpse of your shiny electric trike this morning-nice! Thanks for catching this morning’s action, including the entitled person whose need to smoke overrode everything else. Go figure. Put them on a flatbed and tow’m behind the last car, then they can smoke anytime their little ole hearts desires. Be safe and have a magnificent Monday journey.

Sadly, that does happen no matter how safe one may think they are. Yes. I too believe the transport was a planned event as no emergent call was made. The ambulance service is not supported by the county city or hospital but is an enterprise service.
Yep. The trike was back on the streets of Ft. Morgan today. As the weather gets nicer the more it will appear. It was decent enough this morning to just have the safety vest on and not the hoodie I have been wearing.
It too knows the way to Zazzy's Coffee shop as well as across town to Peppy's for the early coffee.

When you take a fall like that, you NEVER say you're Ok. You stay down and ask for medical assistance, take me to the hospital and have them check me out. You're not a doctor. Don't risk "hidden injury".
Afternoon Mike. Just got home from having the old ticker checked out and Doc says I'm good for another 6 months. A nice, if a tad late, stop of #5. I'm of the opinion that those steps could be a bit wider and deeper, but the darned things are heavy enough as they are. I can sympathize with the lady, but I also feel you should make darned sure where you put your foots, too. The chorus sounded a bit thin, today, but an hour later than usual should see most out and about, scrounging to fill those empty bellies in the nests. They had the whole team busy today. Not the best but better than the 16-inch drop from the car deck to the platform. Or worse when they stop short.

The trike ride was really nice today. I didn't need the hoodie and used only the safety vest I wear. I think the weather will be similar tomorrow morning.

When I worked for the railroad that would have been a delay getting all her information. We never let a person get away like that. Times change. Hope you enjoyed that coffee this morning.
@@geraldjones8032 I'm not going to open up a big can of worms but A. this is an unmanned station and has been for almost 40 years. B. I chatted with her at her vehicle prior to her departure and her major issue was with her ego as she stated to me. Is that on video? NO. If this were a manned AMTRAK station (which do not exist unless there are more than 3 passenger trains per day) I am quite sure she would have been attended to. The EMTs were not on scene for her and had their hands full with the person being transported from car 8. As seen in the video, there was no appreciable limp in her walking toward the awaiting vehicle. Embarrassment is always the major issue. I am sure Franklin D. Azar in Denver would love to take this on.
Mike, these videos are doing great but just a curious question why has your Amtrak been so late? I heard one passenger say something.
Good morning, Brad; I thank you for looking in along with the comment/question. This particular train was 1 hr. and 29 min. late leaving Chicago. AMTRAK is somewhat secretive as to why a train is late in departing. They were not able to make up much time along the way. I have not looked to see how far behind they are out in Nevada. AMTRAK also has to tolerate what the host railroad is doing for track maintenance and opposing freight traffic.
That's about the best info I can give you. This morning's Zephyr should be about 8 minutes late in arriving in Fort Morgan. That will put them into Denver about 20 minutes early.

Today was. not the first time I have seen a passenger take a terrible fall from the step box. If only Ft. Morgan had a platform ! Maybe ,in the future, Amtrak will have the funds to build a platform .
AMTRAK has started the platform replacement project here. Sadly, it won't stop the falls that happen stepping into or from the train cars.
The project here includes a heated platform similar to the one at Winter Park Ski Resort.
When will that project be completed? Good question as they are being closed lipped about it at this time.
Yeah my good to watch the video today. Sounds like some activity around the station today. Someone getting off the train and almost falling on her face. I'm sure she should be okay. But yeah the smoker is more concerned about smoking than helping out anyone. You know that's just what they do. I mean they worried more about sucking on that cancer stick and they'll stop everything to do that. And you know the EMT is trying to do their job.

Any idea where this train crew gets on and off?
Good afternoon and thank you for looking in along with the question. This section of the California Zephyr works from Lincoln, Ne. to Denver. They also return to Lincoln with the #6 train in the evenings and return 24 hours later with another #5 as they are based in Denver. Most are also qualified to work west from Denver to Grand Junction and back.

Hi Mike, I have over 6,300 miles on my e-bike. I'm hooked and use it everywhere I go from the bank to the post office to the pharmacy to the grocery store. It will carry up to 55 pounds of gear on the rear rack as well as 25 on the front rack. And I have a cargo trailer that has a 100 pound limit, which I use to transport all my camera gear, especially three heavy tripods. So e-bikes always catch my attention and I am curious about the gear capacity of your trike?
Good afternoon, Bob; Thanks for stopping by and the questions/comments. This is an "Lectric E-Bike" that I bought last August as an alternative to the outrageous price that the local OPEC wanted for gasoline. I purchased for $1400.00 with the "wide load" seat, carrier baskets and headlight. It is rated for 250 lbs. in the rear basket and 85 lbs. up front. I carry my cam and tripod along with a few other tidbits in the rear basket. They have a wide range of equipment for that rig. I did buy it due to a stability issue I have. I do feel secure riding it out here.
Top speed is 12 mph. That's fast enough for me and the pedal assist. There is a trailer mount on the frame and a Golf Cart style hood with windshield for it as well. That just doesn't work out here for me with the winds that blow unexpectedly. I am waiting for the second battery although I only have to charge this one once a week. Haven't got the miles on it that you have on yours, but I am sure that it will add up the more I do use it.
It is the only electric trike that I am aware of here in town. I had a "neighbor" who tried to relieve me of it last fall. He wasn't too appreciative of my stopping him carrying a shotgun.

@@MikeJensen-jt9yr Yes, e-bikes certainly attract attention and turn heads. I have decided that there is no effective way to secure it in a public place that is out of my sight. Locks and chains only slow down a determined thief. So I never let it out of my sight for one second when it is out of my garage. I can even order groceries online and pick them up in the pickup lane at the store and thereby remain with my bike the whole time.
I wish you good luck with your bike and hope you never have any problems with it (although it sounds like you've got the security issue well taken care of). 😃
