  • Join me as I fly VFR across southern Wales to arrive just after sunset at Bristol Airport EGGD. It's been too long since I really got stuck into flying VFR on VATSIM, I picked up the WB-Sim mod for the default MSFS C172 steam gauge aircraft. We will see in the coming weeks and months how it shapes up. Until A2A Simulations bring their C172 into MSFS.

Excellent video, flight, and commentary, I enjoyed that.

Nice, this is my favourite plane to fly on MSFS as well. The WB-Sim upgrade makes it pretty realistic to fly, and the Boris Audio Works Cessna 172 Sound Set improves it even more.
From what I understand from the discord the state saving (and thus the tacho) is stored per livery, so you need to use different liveries if you want to track time for different registrations.

Hi, thanks for the info! I must look into the soundset you mention before my next video. Also, i distinctly remember the feel of the flight dynamics on final approach were really good, in a near flare attitude you don't get that wobbling effect that i remember from default aircraft, maybe thats just the control curve somehow works well for me, not sure

Loved the video. This is the content I love. Love the aircraft and it too is my ‘go to’ C172. I also have the Boris Audio which makes it even better. Just a few comments:
      1. when joining right downwind, you called out joining right base - which I believe was an error unless I’m missing something. You then correctly called right base when turning base.
      2. When doing Unicom calls, my understanding is that one should start with the airport name followed by ‘traffic’ and end with just the airport name (without ‘traffic’). I noticed you add ‘traffic’ at the end as well. Which is correct?
A request would be for you to do an overhead join on one of your next videos. I noticed on the VFR chart that the pattern is to the south (unless ATC instructs otherwise) and thus the normal joining pattern should have been ‘Left’ for runway 27. I would love to have seen how to correctly do this when approaching from the north. 😊
I would be so keen to see more VFR flights with steam gauges. I’m probably flying more than 50% VFR on MSFS in UK, Europe and US.
      Thanks again.

@@RhettKelly Hi! thanks for your thoughts. Yes your correct I messed up that downwind call, also I believe you are correct that a unicom call should have traffic at the beginning, but at the end no 'traffic'. But I have a feeling thats totally an American useage. I have a feeling in the UK all you say is the 'Bristol Traffic' at the beginning, and don't mention the airport name or traffic at the end, I need to research this though to be sure. Also you are correct, it was only afterwards that I realised that there was only a left hand circuit, and I should have adjusted, either done an overhead join or re-routed into Bristol. I have not flown VFR in a while, if you look back you'll see a lot more older videos Ive done VFR, but I mean to make a return to it on my channel this year! Thanks for watching and I'll make sure I feature an overhead join in the next video!

i like flying VFR on vatsim because it gives the ATC something they're not used to, i.e. it challenges them a bit

I agree completely. It's people like us that keep ATC controllers from getting bored!! :P
