As a controller, I thinks messing up a taxi clearance is the best mistake you can make. Ive only been controlling for 4 months and I've seen worse (someone took the liberty to pushback taxi and held short of the runway and decided to contact for ifr clearence💀💀) yeah just keep the grind it worth it!! You've improved a lot
@@KrokssonsAviation-xc7df there is no problem in asking the controller to slow down. We actually like it when new ppl try the network. Just say that you're new on first contact or write it in the remarks and we'll take our time with you.
As someone who has been a Ground controller at major events handling more than 10 aircraft on the ground at once, I can assure you that all ATC will be very forgiving with you, especially in the UK. Don't panic if it takes a while to respond and if you are unsure, always ask them if they could give progressive taxi instructions or just to repeat the instruction, it's an online network full of a lot of inexperienced pilots, so mistakes will always happen, even controllers make mistakes. Nobody expects perfect, keep up the awesome work, and always take that flight even if your a little nervous, we are always here to help you :)
I know i should not say this but i am so pleased that i am not alone struggling with taxiways. The closed captions in the video remind me so much of myself trying to learn Vat Sim, What did he say, Panic, etc. Thank you for taking the time to share your introduction to Vat Sim, it is helping my confidence knowing others experience the same emotions. Great video thank you
You're doing a great job! Don't be disheartened by taking your time with responses. Loving the videos! No one should ever feel bad for learning, as long as you are learning! Good Job!
I worked in Dublin airport on the ramp. When doing the headsets, it can be confusing to get to the push points. I am always impressed how pilots don't get lost in the crazy layout of the airport.
I know it’s intimidating talking to atc for the first time in a flight but when you do your clearance as well as that, you have nothing to worry about.
Best tip mate is stop, ask the controller to say again, read it back carry on. Never feel under pressure by the controllers, take your time. One thing that annoys me on vatsim is when I receive a complicated taxi route and I’m still rolling. There is a reason the 737 requires 2 pilots! I always go back with a “standby” in this scenario and when clear of the runway call for taxi myself. Be assertive but professional works every time.
I’d never actually considered going back with a “standby”, thanks! What bothers me is that even when editing the video I couldn’t figure out where I went wrong with that last taxi 😅
@@AirNOTT your scenery let you down, its impossible if what you see on your navigraph chart doesn't match what you see out the window. Looked like your scenery didn't even have stand numbers. The other alternative is when you call for taxi or you get taxi instructions tell them you are using default scenery for concessions. However it would make more sense (and be more enjoyable) for you to update your scenery. Have fun mate!
Great video again ...my aim is to get onto Vatsim in the near future and its so helpful to see your experience.. I am always amazed at the young kids of school age that seem so good re communications and flying.. It would be great to see one of them do a You Tube video.
Honestly it looks like you’re doing a great job for someone new to Vatsim, you definitely have the right mentality in trying to be prepared for frequencies etc. Having a pen and paper to scribble departure and taxi clearances is definitely a good idea, helps a lot. When on Unicom you basically need to announce where you are (position and altitude) and what you’re planning to do. Announcing at TOD is maybe a bit early to start because incoming traffic is at you’re destination won’t be able to hear you on frequency yet, but certainly doesn’t hurt (better safe than sorry!). If you do get a bit to close to someone it can be helpful to deconflict with other pilots, too. You were definitely let down by scenery at the end there, taxiing around default airports is difficult at the best of times! You definitely did the right thing stopping when you were unsure, better than just wandering about aimlessly.
Terrific video... Very impressive despite the sketchy taxi... My wife even asked where you were going... Swung the video on to our TV... Absolutely brilliant... 👍🙌
taxiing is difficult in VATSIM, especially in Dublin (my home airport!). what I'd recommend is a little cheat using the zoomed in VFR map by pressing "V" so that you can see where you are in comparison to your taxi chart! enjoyable video nonetheless, you've definitely got the ability for VATSIM, you'll warm up to it soon enough :D
Id love to see all the clicks, also id love to see a longform content type, kind of like a vod as i am still learning and this is very entertaining and helpful
I admire you for carrying on and showing that every flight is a nerve wracking as the last, I've never done it but have watched plenty to work out how the Q/A flow should go. My biggest fear is not being able to understand the controller especially if they talk fast or are garbled but you can always text! The temptation to just disconnect must be great lol.
To be fair, Dublin is one of the harder airports to taxi around in my experience because the taxiways are named in a particurlarly Irish manner. But scenery definitely would of helped you. Link 4 is the curved taxiway that goes onto taxiway 2, so you should of just gone in a straight line accross H1 and onto taxiway 2 around into stand 125. When using navigrpah, click on the stacked sqaures for the airport chart. That will impose the airport chart onto your map and you will see the same same chart the controller is using.
Amazing job man. I not dreaming yet to fly by Vatsim. Still learning how properly to set up MCDU on FlyByWire 320. I tried to land in Dublin 3 times by SimBrief (I dont have sub., for Navigraph), no chance... all times landed "kamikaze" style
Actually I’m quite impressed, you did a good job. Your advantage as a native English speaking person isn’t a problem for you guys. For the non native speakers that becomes another hurdle. Your issue is the lack of the perfect scenery, the MK Studios variant is very good you can follow the signs on the ground and have the new layout as well. My recommendation would be to choose a flight from two 3rd party airports. Makes it a lot easier. Compliments to you! Definitely nothing to worry about.
I think Dublin airport has had a lot of changes and expansion recently. I discovered that the default scenery for Dublin is very out of date when the runway I planned to land on didn't exist! I bought the Orbx version instead which seems much more up-to-date and seems to match the Navigraph charts.
100% with ya re: the Vatsim fizzling out comment .... Keep it up. Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Actually, this video is a very good reference and very useful as a help for others to learn and get used to Vatsim.
tbh im planning on trying for the first time on vatsim the 737 im not 100 percent familiar with it but im sure ill be fine, watching your videos make me love vatsim even more
As a former dublin ground/ tower controller, The taxi's would confuse some people but it's never something to worry about. Just ask us again and we can say it slower to give time to write. Or if you're really lost or confuse just ask for progressive taxi and we'd be more than happy to help. As not all scenery perfectly matches things happen no stress we're all here to have fun!
You'll get there mate. Just an FYI re 15:20 - it's localiser established. Once you tell them that, they give you clearance to descend with the glideslope. So you're calling up late if you're waiting for the GS to come in before calling ATC.
Your are doing great! I really love your videos they have helped me to build some confidence to fly on vatsim. I just had my third vatsim flight today and let me tell you Gatwick is crazy 30 departures at once and I was one of them 😅
It gets the better of us when we mishear something or we have an aircraft misconfiguration on VATSIM. it's more daunting than you think and until you actually end up in the mess you don't realize how awkward it is :D Well in mate, watching the video I'd say you're miles ahead of what we can do haha. We too need to get some more scenery packages to save us staring at Navigraph simlink
So youre doing fine and the first year on ivao or vatsim my voice was exactly like yours xD You could feel it through the mic. And that was despite the fact that I actually new how to fly but being "live" with lots of others and great controllers was intimidating. This will go with time. Just keep doing it, practice, and youll be fine
don't beat yourself up too much, you handled the error well and didn't give up. i was quite tense leading up to the actual mistake, because i was expecting something major to happen lol. for what it's worth there's a Navigraph wishlist post about adding taxi routing as a feature, hopefully it will be implemented one day.
I'm about to get my first Vatsim flight this Saturday in the first wings event. Thought this event would be a good idea to start with. Looking forward to it. Your vatsim videos helped a lot to since it doesn't seem that much complicated to me now 😊 Have a look for that event. Maybe it's just the right thing for you too. From Lyon to Bordeux
I cant stress how many times I have arrived in Dublin, and got the taxi instructions wrong 🤣. I havent flown on vatsim for a while now and would like to try get back into it, but am having trouble building up the courage to transmit, good luck with your vatsim flying and dont give up!!!🙂
nice vid, havent been in the streams alot sadly since my schedule has been packed with school and drivers license :) but im glad to see that u keep on trying Vatsim and havent given it up yet :) Take care till next time :)
EIDW is not an easy airport to taxi the first few times. i have a mental block of my own, sometimes when im taxiing out to depart in edinburgh, i end up going to the opposite runway and ive been doing this for a long time. dont worry youre doing great stuff like this happens!!
I think you are doing great on VATSIM. The controllers are always very friendly. I think if you really cant understand the instruction, can politely ask them to say again for you. struggling about taxiway, is a normal stuff haha. I am still messing up with my home airport's taxi way. HAHA.. Cheers mate, looking forward to seeing the 4th.
You are doing to so well on Vatsim mate. Keep up the good work. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s all part of learning. Also remember it’s not the end of the world if you do make errors, because it’s not real life.
If you forget or start to panic you can always ask the controller to repeat. Don’t be scared controllers are taught to understand that everyone has their ups and downs and not every flight is easy
Just to let you know by the way when your lining up on the runway for takeoff you ignore the yellow taxi lines and rry to use as much runway as possible. Thise lines are for exiting
If it's any consolation I'm a real world airline pilot (A320) and can assure you it happens in real life too!! On many occasions the Captain and I have been trying to figure out the approved taxi routing to find the gate and the situation is often compounded by very strong foreign accents throwing taxi instructions at you at lightning speed!! That sense of embarrassment and rising panic is something we all experience from time to time lol - especially on a 'line check'!
@@AirNOTT i would also love that, i think im going on the correct path but also im not sure sometimes my speed just drops like crazy low and i stall and crash 😂
The reason you forget simple things when on VATSIM is probably because you don't do the checklists. I haven't flown the PMDG but the one thing I appreciate about the FBW A32NX is the inclusion of checklists in the EFB. Without them I forget stuff too.
Hey well done, tough with the scenery and Navigraph in Dublin. When you ask for ifr clearance, you always say with information India, Uniform etc I know about the aeronautics alphabet but dont understand why you have to say that.
Still not 100% sure to be honest, Paul. I think rather than making a left off of H1, I should have carried on straight, following the terminal around to stand 125? No way I would have derived that from the charts though. I guess the lesson is to ask and have the conversation vs ploughing ahead
I’m finding taxi instructions the most complex part of the flight to navigate. Even with Aerodrome ground charts, the lack of visual indicators on the links and taxiways can be very confusing. Looking at ‘real-world’ streams, pilots often have the same issues.
You and me both! I guess experience is the key. I feel ok at airports I frequent often, but the thought of heading down to Madrid, for example, gives me pause!
You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. Decent scenery is a must I have found....default scenery just isn't good enough generally and I find it means I make more mistakes! Taxi instructions are a nightmare...I find if you zoom in real close it helps figure out the taxiways...navigraph doesn't show all labels unless you are pretty zoomed in I find.
The map view of the airport doesn’t match airport 10-9 or parking stands east 10-9c diagrams regarding the position of link 4. In the jeppesen docs link 4 is straight ahead from H1
Love your videos! Long time flight simmer but back after a 8 year hiatus due to children, back with msfs2020 & fenix. Your airport scenery, is that default? As looks more detailed then mine or do you fly into add on freeware/payware? Going through your catalogue of videos, very enjoyable!
Great video! You were definitely let down by the scenery. Without the proper markers it's very hard to know where you are going, especially in Dublin as it is a bit complicated with the links.
Welcome to the world of taxiway (and even more dangerous, runway) incursions - speaking with regards to real world ops, it is just as baffling sometimes, and throw in night time, sleep deprivation, rain/snow/mist/fog, high speed clearances from ATC's, time pressure, and it's a REAL threat. Some airports have RIDICULOUS layouts that are seemingly designed to confuse everybody. It obviously gets easier with familiarity, but as a global operator, literally everywhere you go is pretty much unfamiliar. You can't memorise the entire taxiway layout (indeed, pre-briefing has it's own threat of creating expectations of routings that may not be in line with the actual clearance), but of course you have another crewmember to operate the aircraft. It starts to become a little easier to understand why planes still taxi into other planes/the wrong way when you've seen some of the confusing situations.
The chart you were using to taxi was incorrect. Link 4 is an intersection of taxiways not just one taxiway. If you look at the "Parking Stands East" chart under "Taxi" it labels the taxiways a bit better in that area.
Your'e doing great m8. Just remember, in the real world pilot monitoring will be handling the radio comms and a portion of the A.P setting The reason there are Two pilots is beacause it is a fast paced enviroment and doing on your own especially with a mouse is a challenge.
Hotel 1 to link 4 to stand 125 does look exactly what you did based on the map and ATC. ATC sound like they wanted you to go straight on which, according to the map you have, would be Hotel 1, Foxtrot 3, 2, Stand 125 (and also looks like the most direct route. Is the map part of VATSIM? Wondering if your map is different to the one ATC are using. Something to bear in mind is to ask for repeats until you have the information you want. This is something experienced pilots seem happy to do but newer pilots get nervous about asking for a repeat. Repeat should be like going around, it just gets done when it is needed without criticism! That's another rule written in blood! Mistakes are learning points, pleased you could share this with the community :)
Personally I dont rly use Unicom unless there is visible traffic around me and I communicate everything from the base turn to final all the way til I v get to my gate
I just did my first vatsim flight today where i didnt get sent to unicom during descent, it was super fun so much vectors and such, but i messed up the parking i went in the wrong one but atc had a laugh about it so it was fine😂
New sub here buddy! Really enjoyed the video and as someone trying to get confident on Vatsim it’s nice to see other people doing it. Hopefully I’ll catch a live stream. Do you stream on here or twitch ?
Jumped through all the hoops to get headset, software etc, to get onto Vatsim. I did so for the first time about a month or a so ago. Unfortunately I didnt have a great experience. I do have some real world pilot experience, but it was many years ago. I did post that it was my FIRST time on vatsim, but the controller had an attitude when I asked for clearance. It had been auto posted onto the message system, but I wasnt prepared for that and didnt know it was there. Anyway….long story short he was rude and disrespectful about it. Even mouthing off via the message system about it being in the “big scary” message board. When I was in flight training I even flew out of a small international airport, so Ive had radio time to say the least. So I havent returned back to date. Yes, Im sure he doesnt represent all others, but it was a bad experience when I was already nervous and wanted to do a good job on there.
The scenary was okay in this case, although you can't see the taxiways names the lines seem to be acurate. The problem here was navigraph, it showed link 4 in a weird place and made it very confusing you can see it better in Google maps on the real taxiways marks. In any case good job, I wouldn't have done it better on my 3rd Day 😂
That is crazy they would not at least provide gate numbers at a major airport! You should not have to guess what gate/stands is what??? You did the best you could being they don't have anything identified!!!
When I do a decent on Unicom ( I’m going to use the words I said today on vatsim ) I would say “ Copenhagen traffic Scandinavian 506 is leaving Flight Level 370 for 5000 feet Copenhagen traffic be advised” so say the place first your going to then your flight number then the alts and then stop and with scenery I can’t fly anywhere on vatsim without buying the scenery for the airport😂
There are people who dont know what "ATIS" is or how to use a transponder. And they are still flying because there are enough controllers that are patient with them . Now you did your third flight and you read the atis properly, you mentioned acft type, atis info and stand number (which they ALWAYS ask you to do in the atis). Whenever Im on vatsim at least 6 out of 10 dont seam to read the atis at all!
This is not a terrible mistake, I was online for 2 hours a few days ago and let me tell you this. Peoples minds turn off when flying on vatsim? One just didnt even contact us, even though we send like 10 contact me... Youre doing good buddy! And let me know when you go to EHAM again!
Heyyy its ok i started play vatsim around 1 month ago and it was the same i didnt have the courage to speak with atc when i try its like my breath is going to stop😂 afterall we all started somewhere lol
It's off cuts from my main worktop. It's just cheap-ish kitchen worktop from Ikea (Ekbacken, I think it's called). I cut them to size and used the extra edging strips to tidy them up. They go back under the desk quite a long way and I screwed them in from underneath (with many screws) to keep it sturdy. Hope that helps!

That sense of embarrassment and rising panic is something we all experience from time to time lol - especially on a 'line check'!
Itd be amazing if you could go through all the set up procedure for the 73, would love to see that
Maybe I could do a separate video on that. Though my last a320 one performed TERRIBLY!
When you ask for ifr clearance, you always say with information India, Uniform etc
I know about the aeronautics alphabet but dont understand why you have to say that.
I just looked at the charts too, I'm confused with Link 4 I would of done the same - Did you find out the correct way cos im confused LOL
What bugs me is, even during the edit, I can’t see what I should have done instead. 🙃
@AirNOTT I've just looked and the charts aren't clear at all...not really helpful 🫣
For Dublin use the chart for the taxiways are its much more defined that the generic navigraph taxi map.
I cant tell that this is your third flight you did a grest job
The map view of the airport doesn’t match airport 10-9 or parking stands east 10-9c diagrams regarding the position of link 4. In the jeppesen docs link 4 is straight ahead from H1
Smooth landing 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Love your videos! Long time flight simmer but back after a 8 year hiatus due to children, back with msfs2020 & fenix. Your airport scenery, is that default? As looks more detailed then mine or do you fly into add on freeware/payware? Going through your catalogue of videos, very enjoyable!
Great video! You were definitely let down by the scenery. Without the proper markers it's very hard to know where you are going, especially in Dublin as it is a bit complicated with the links.
Yeah I still can’t figure out what I should have done haha
I was the EZY68B that was calling for clearance while you were departing, lol.
Ayyyy nice!
I’ve never tried vatsim before so it would be nice if you walk us through the buttons and stuff
If you look at the "Parking Stands East" chart under "Taxi" it labels the taxiways a bit better in that area.
good video! i am new to vatsim and noticed my destination and equipment are not showing up in vat spy, what am I missing?? :). thanks!
How do you hold speed when you taxi? I always end up either going too slow or too fast. Flying the FBW A320
Your'e doing great m8.
There's a glitch on that Navigraph map. You're better off looking at the actual taxi chart. Look at chart 10-9C and you'll see how it's supposed to be
Personally I dont rly use Unicom unless there is visible traffic around me and I communicate everything from the base turn to final all the way til I v get to my gate
When you are setting up the plane initially do you put in the SID and ARRIVAL, or do you wait to see what Vatsim tells you to do?
I just did my first vatsim flight today where i didnt get sent to unicom during descent, it was super fun so much vectors and such, but i messed up the parking i went in the wrong one but atc had a laugh about it so it was fine😂
Awesome, good job for giving it a go!
@@AirNOTT thanks, i watched you're vatsim flights as a final revision type of thing then went it it really helped
Honestly, ive heard worse readbacks irl. Youre doing well!
New sub here buddy! Really enjoyed the video and as someone trying to get confident on Vatsim it’s nice to see other people doing it. Hopefully I’ll catch a live stream. Do you stream on here or twitch ?
Thank you my friend! On here for streaming, though looking at twitches new stance on multi streaming I may stream there as well in the near future
In any case good job, I wouldn't have done it better on my 3rd Day 😂
How strange, is it uncommon for navaigraph to be wrong like that?
That is crazy they would not at least provide gate numbers at a major airport! You should not have to guess what gate/stands is what??? You did the best you could being they don't have anything identified!!!
If u get pushback tool bar they do the pushback for you
When I do a decent on Unicom ( I’m going to use the words I said today on vatsim ) I would say “ Copenhagen traffic Scandinavian 506 is leaving Flight Level 370 for 5000 feet Copenhagen traffic be advised” so say the place first your going to then your flight number then the alts and then stop and with scenery I can’t fly anywhere on vatsim without buying the scenery for the airport😂
Good video💪
Thanks! 😃
I wonder how many people just log off after getting frustrated lol
There are people who dont know what "ATIS" is or how to use a transponder. And they are still flying because there are enough controllers that are patient with them .
Now you did your third flight and you read the atis properly, you mentioned acft type, atis info and stand number (which they ALWAYS ask you to do in the atis). Whenever Im on vatsim at least 6 out of 10 dont seam to read the atis at all!
really sucks that you almost need to have payware scenery to fly nearly anywhere in vatsim in MSFS
This is not a terrible mistake, I was online for 2 hours a few days ago and let me tell you this. Peoples minds turn off when flying on vatsim? One just didnt even contact us, even though we send like 10 contact me... Youre doing good buddy! And let me know when you go to EHAM again!
Will do! Appreciate it 👍
IVAO is easyer than vatsim and i recommend it i dont know if you know it but it is just less chaotic
Hope it helps
Yeah I’ve heard the same. Kinda like the buzz of VatSim though
@AirNOTT yeah same I can help tou with your atc If you want I'm a as3 controller
Lol I don’t know why but when I tried to fly the inibuilds a320neo it kept on lagging every 5 seconds so I ended up cancelling the flight
I need to try this plane! Besides the lag, how is it?
I'm so bad at Vatsim I've given up and handed by headphones over to my grandson.
haha! that's brilliant!
Heyyy its ok i started play vatsim around 1 month ago and it was the same i didnt have the courage to speak with atc when i try its like my breath is going to stop😂 afterall we all started somewhere lol
We do indeed!
How do you change cameras so smoothly?
The edit 🙂
You should come fly under my control in the US sometime ;)
Would love that! Any major differences I should expect?
Does anyone know where he gets those white platform extenders for his desk for the yoke and throttle?
It's off cuts from my main worktop. It's just cheap-ish kitchen worktop from Ikea (Ekbacken, I think it's called). I cut them to size and used the extra edging strips to tidy them up. They go back under the desk quite a long way and I screwed them in from underneath (with many screws) to keep it sturdy. Hope that helps!
How can you land SOOOO Good?
Luck haha
What PC do you use ??
Remember a real plane has 2 pilots .... don't stress out , it will fall into place.
taxi was for link 4 weird
Mixing it up with all the pretend pilots on vatsim. It's only game folks. A computer or console game.
