  • Join me in the gusty conditions over southern England while I fly VFR out of Bristol to attempt an overhead join at Gloucester, before landing back at Welshpool where I started from in the previous video. Sadly, the Gloucester ATC went offline just before I made it into their airspace! But I continue to search for the conditions where I can one day do a while youtube video in fully staffed ATC space from beginning to end!! That will be the day. :P

    Thanks Peter for doing the overhead join. That was great and a real challenge to land in that wind - nicely done! It is a pity when controllers log off after you have planned a route and are expecting them to be online. The CIX VFR club has an excellent section on the various ways you can join the traffic pattern. I’ll share the link in a reply to this comment. I wrote a fairly long comment yesterday which seems to have got lost. So will break it down a little.

      Another comment I made was that I checked in the CAP413 document on page 71 in the section on unattended aerodrome phraseology examples that in the UK it is correct to start with Welshpool traffic and end with Welshpool (without ‘traffic’) - as in the US and SA.

      Lastly, the following links provides excellent information and guidance for VFR and associated phraseology:

      @@RhettKelly downloaded both of those, thankyou! if you ever want to fly shared cockpit with me in the C172, if we can get the WBSim mod working with YourControls, come join me on my discord discord.gg/xQgrDRST

      @@PeterMatthessI would really love to do this. I’m currently on holiday at our sea house (it’s summer in SA) and will be home this weekend. I’ll certainly contact you on your Discord server. Thank you for the invitation and link. My old shared cockpit flying partner doesn’t fly that much anymore so this would be great. Also can’t wait for the majestic Dash 8 to be finalised. I hear this is still coming along. I am sure the C172 WBSIM mod will work with YourControls.

    Hi Peter, You can change the com settings of the GNS530 in its aux settings page to 8.33 spacing to allow tuning to more frequencies such as 126.030 (Bristol ATIS)

      Ooooo!!! Thanks! I will definitely try to figure this out for the next video Thankyou!!

    The GPS DME reading is simply telling you (in addition to your distance from the VOR) what VOR radial you happen to be on, not necessarily the radial you want to fly. The standard GPS provided actually works really well and is quite easy to use. I’m still getting to know its full capabilities.

    • @PeterMatthess
      @PeterMatthess  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yea I could tell it only showed what radial I was on at any given time. My confusion came from the fact that as it was only a DME and not a VOR, that it shouldn't show me any radial information at all. But maybe I'm wrong

      @@PeterMatthess I see your point. It does seem that WPL is a DME station (also with an NDB transmitter). I therefore think that it’s the GPS that is providing the radial information as it can determine the radial you are on based on your GPS position. The radial information is not being derived from the DME station.

      I see that my original long comment I posted on this video has somehow gone missing. It included some links to really useful information. Perhaps that is why?

    Hi Peter, great channel I've only just come across it. I fly the just flight piper arrow in the sim and I'm building up the courage to go live with Vatsim, I've noticed that the comm panel only has 5 digits but vatsim controllers are on 6 digits, so if ground is 121.885 do you put 121.88?

    • @PeterMatthess
      @PeterMatthess  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think in that case it gets rounded up in a weird way, when you look at your Vpilot panel, you'll see that it looks like its 121.885 your on, even though in the cockpit it only looks like youve selected 121.88 if that makes any sense. Glad your having fun, if your in the UK timezone I'd go check out the CIX VFR club, they are a great bunch of guys, and they'll help you fly on vatsim. They do it regularaly in GA aircraft

      Thanks for the quick reply. I'm only observing on vatsim at the moment & I'll check what frequency it says. I'll take a look at that club over the weekend. Just upgraded from Xbox X and what a massive difference msfs is on pc.

      @@stevenkirkpatrick2917 if you want I would be happy to fly with you on vatsim sometime, I think the C172 works with YourControls, which allows a shared cockpit environment, I don't know if the WBSim C172 mod is compatible with YourControls though, ill have to check
