You can not use this UNLESS YOU ALREADY HAVE A PHONE, which seems to defeat the purpose of setting up a text only phone on your computer.
Ok the title of the video doesn't say anything about that, you're looking for a different kind of service.
Another great thing is that it will turn your tablet into a phone. That is why I use it.

Thank you so much for this. However I am still confused, So I already have my US number linked to google voice and are able to have a google voice number. However, it does not show on my settings. It is fortunate that I was able to take a screenshot of it. My question is, if I have to give the google number to someone, would their call be directed to my google voice account?
Tony, I have a need to get a number that I can use for the US from anywhere in the world. Sounds like this might be a great option. Just checking. My current US cell is now parked at NumberBarn (as I will be in Australia and Europe mainly) but want to maintain my US presence as such. I can receive text to this US Cell (to verify the Google Number setup), but the NumberBarn service does not include voice calling. So question I have: Will I still be able to use Google Number for voice calling where the linked number is not voice activated as such? Hope this makes sense. I done this last night and verified my number by the code they sent by text. But I was not able to make a test call. So I went to settings and it said that I need a google voice number. I was like huh? So I went through the steps again and chose a number and it asked me to put in my tel number so they could send a code. I put in my US number again and then it said to use another number as this one is already linked to the account. Cant make any calls or texts, its greyed out. Kinda annoying and waste of my time.

Hi Tony! Last year I got a GV # but I didn't know that I would lose it if there wasn't any activity. I was not able to reclaim the # because I didn't realize it until it was to late so I lost that #. I just tried going on again to get another # using my US cell # but it will not alow me to get another #. It's asking me to submit a new # but I only have 1 cell phone and I don't have another # to give them. Is there not a way to get another GV# since they took away the 1st one? Can you only sign up one time using your # and if you lose it then too bad they won't reissue another one?

Wondered if you could answer a question. I want to port my number to GV and know about the $20 fee and 24-48 hour wait. It says that I need to add a carrier number to forward to. Is that true? I thought if you ported your number, you could use WIFI anywhere by itself.
Also, if I wanted to use a data sim, do I need to link that number into GV or does GV automatically use the data from that active sim when wanting to use the ported number on data?
You are correct... you do not need a cell phone service plan to forward to.
Just popping in a data SIM is all you need to do. Google Voice will see the new network and work off of that.

Thank you for this informative video.. But as a newbie in this arena, I am just wondering if 1- The calls you make from your phone, show the "Google assigned number" or you own cell number? (Since one of the points of getting the Google phone IS not showing your own phone number.. right?) 2- For privacy purposes (and since Google doesn't have a good reputation when it comes to voluntarily provide People's information to the Big brothers Surveillance apparatus) HOW traceable to the actual person (and the actual phone number) are this #GoogleNumbers? & finally is there a Cap for the number of minutes, calls or texts that maybe hidden in the "Fine Prints"??
I can answer part of your question. When you make a call using the Google Voice app the person your calling only sees the Google Voice number and not your real number.

I've put in soooo many cities and zip codes and it says there is nothing in the area. There are no suggested numbers either. Have you seen this?
Don't put in the zip code, Google "area code for Tulsa, OK" or whatever, then put in the area code you find on Google and you will most likely find something. I hit the same issue as you searching by city.

Hi Tony, thanks for your excellent explanation. However, I cannot seem to be able to receive or make phone calls. It just does not ring on my iPhone or laptop, but I do get a voicemail message after the fact. What am I not doing right? I have gone through this and a couple of other videos to set this up but not yet successful. I use my carrier minutes, have it forwarding to my cell...... Not sure what else to do.
Go into settings and see if you have Do Not Disturb turned on

it says "verify by phone" on that page so if you choose that option i assume you would receive a phone call and a machine will give you the code to enter. :-)

Facebook requires a "real" phone number to verify and identity. Virtual/VOIP numbers won't work.
