Lol... 27:58 "...better put the gold gilt away before I get too carried away with it." Thank you for letting us in on your creative process and proving that even someone who can turn out such a lovely piece still wrestles with the inclination to over-work his projects, just like the rest of us!
I think I can say without fear of contradiction, that is one of the most enjoyable and informative videos I have had the pleasure to watch Martin. An absolutely stunning piece, and your airbrush skills are amazing, and the texturing technique while very unorthodox, is very, very effective. Superb work mate, well done. Take care Mike
That was a fabulous video Martin! The mixture of skills required to complete the piece, not to mention your eye for detail were fascinating to watch. I liked the black actually but it was interesting to see you change your mind and start over again. More of the same please :) I can't believe that was nearly 30 minutes, it flew by!
Martin, this one is truly outstanding. Great the way you allowed the piece to develop. Some really interesting techniques to get us thinking and hopefully out into the shed. The red edge to the inside of the rim really finished the piece in my opinion. Well done pal. Cheers. Dave
Though the platter isn't my personal favourite, I really like how you try and experiment, finding out what works for you and what doesn't. Nice out of the box thinking, very creative, well done.
Sorry I have no criticisms so I cannot leave you feedback on your finished item. But I can leave you with heaps of praise for a fantastic finished item. Well done.
You have inspired me to try some new texturing techniques and get into airbrushing. Your work has answered many questions I had concerning adding gilding. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
OMG, you are not the only one who is impresses with this piece. There are just some things that love taking stain and some that don't. You made it work like a fine wine at sunset. I can't wait to see what you do next.
Hi Martin, brilliant video just started woodturning about six months and love it. Watching all of your work keeps me in the workshop all my spare time. Keep her lit
I've watched a lot of woodturning videos and this is now one of my all time favourites! Firstly, anyone who uses the term 'wally' in a self deprecating manner is a winner in my book. Secondly, so much of the joy of woodworking is in the experimentation, trying new techniques and seeing what works, and admitting what didn't. This video is a perfect example of that in action, so thank you for resisting the temptation to edit out the bits that didn't. And finally, this piece is stunning! Opulent is a spot on description. What a great result, and thanks for sharing the experience with us!
Martin, That is an absolutely beautiful piece. The sharing of your technic is much appreciated and very inspiring. Thank you for sharing and for all you are doing for the turning community. Jim
Hi Martin, I have just watched this item for the second time, I think, that it's great. After this I am going down to my !"work shop" now I know what sort of things i would like to try. You have explaind the methods realy clearly. I will try to do what I want to do next and try and send you a photo. Keep going mate yoi are an insperation. Geoff.
Martin, I think that is one of the most beautiful pieces you have created yet. The video was very educational and enjoyable to watch. Great job my friend.
+Martin Saban-Smith I always liked his Viking style bowls and texturing techniques. However, your pieces are great! I really like the screw driver method, I've Ben wanting to try hammering the sides of screws to texture. Anyway, keep the wonderful videos and work coming. Cheers!
Fantastic work Martin. I'm impressed with the try it an see approach to the texture. It's something I want to try more of but have always been worried about wrecking the piece so have tended to stick with tried and tested texturing tools. Really enjoyed the video. Cheers, Ben.
Good morning Rex. Thank you for your kind comment. It's a privilege to be able to inspire people through TH-cam and I am glad you're woodturning again. All the best, Martin
I found your video whilst searching on how to airbrush. Awesome, very informative, and exactly what I was looking for. An enjoyable video especially as you redo parts where you don't like your result. You don't get that in other videos which made this all the more informative.
Hi Charlotte. Many thanks for your kind words. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video - there's never anything wrong going back and putting something you don't like right. :-) All the best, Martin
just started turning after early retirement so catching up with some videos etc just have to say I think your work is amazing and looking forward to trying some of your ideas.many many thanks Martin Watson
Martin, loving the videos so far. Keep up the good work, I'm "chuffed to bits" to watch these! You may want to took into an air powered "needler". It usually used to remove paint from steel, or to remove slag from Arc welds, but it's gentle enough to use on your palm without any damage, kinda tickles actually. It leaves an interesting textured look to wood, probably would have been perfect for your rim.
oh wow this is truly incredible. I would have named it "Spartans Serving" as it reminds me of a Spartan shield and is a serving platter. you make this look so easy, a true pro! an artist!
Stunning... in fact A RED HOT PIECE, well done Martin. I think you'll be seeing more turners having a go at that kind of texturing! Thanks for sharing. Cheers Andy
Really enjoying you colouring work. I've been needing some inspiration to get me back to being creative on my wood lathe & your work is doing that. Thanks for sharing. Hugo
A great video Martin has put ideas in my head. In the USA we call what you did with your hammer and Dremel tool stippling. I have done this in wood using a router with a small pointed bit. I just set the router down on the workpiece and lift one side of the router up and letting it down to make a dimple. You just keep raising it up and down while moving the router a little at a time. The bit you use and how deep you set it changes the pattern. Try it on some scrap and see if you like it.
Wow Martin that is beautiful!!...I really thought you'd lost it when you started belting it with a claw hammer but you obviously you know your stuff because the effect is perfect!!... Loved the airbrushing too, great video. Thanks and keep up the good work. Trev
That is really beautiful. I kept thinking "Stop, stop" when you said what you were going to do next because the piece looked so good with each stage of decoration but, thankfully, you couldn't hear me and did a wonderful job. I learned lots of stuff, thank you. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Super, really inspiring work, great video. Thank you for sharing your craft, Martin. I suppose I will have to go back to the beginning of your uploads now, grrrrr ;)
I already had a dremmel/rotary tool on my wishlist, but now you're making me add airbrush too! Thanks for sharing the technique. The texturing and guilding looks fantastic. I think I will try that out. By the way this is your best video yet! Keep them coming! -Todd
Hi Martin !! You get out what you put in and that bowl sounds absolutely stunning. This video was indeed entertaining, useful and inspirational...........Amazing !! Take care and thank you. Chris.
Wow oh wow Martin I am your latest on a long list of followers and why oh why have I not found you earlier in my novice turning hobby but still I know where to find you now. I don't work through ill health so I will be watching all of your videos starting with this unless you have a better idea? Regards Roger
Outstanding piece Martin one of your best so far, very inspirational. I'm really enjoying taking this journey with you. Just need to get my workshop up and running now...
Wow amazing. Keep up the great work. I always look forward to seeing the new stuff that you guys make. It never gets boring and always surprises me with absolute amazement every time. And just when you think you've seen all that could be done with wood you guys take it to the next level again with no disappointment. So thanks to the wood turning community I'll have endless high quality vids to watch and never get bored watching them. So once again a big thank you goes out to all of you guys for all of your hard work. You guys really capture the endless opportunities of wood turning.
This is my first video of yours and as you stated about the gold...I am impressed. Great work. I too am a novice woodworker sand would love to be full time. However that may have to wait a bit. Thanks for the video, very inspiring......Mooch, BTW also a new sub
Superb work all the way through Martin The finished platter is really stunning and something I'm going to try without an airbrush. However, i'm fairly certain an airbrush will soon be on my shopping list. That's the sort of project which would go down well as a demonstration at a club. In respect of my turning club, it has now reconvened after the summer break, We had our competition last Saturday which was for three miniature pieces and good old Baconsoda carried the day. His work was just amazing and managed to get his three miniatures inside his wedding ring.
very Nick Agar . I liked your take on it though. I prefered the base with the black before you sanded it back again . the air brush kit looks very usfull and accurate to use . cheers Duncan
good job ninja... finishing... high gloss resin.... I've been looking at skinning carbon a wood bowl with a skinned bottom carbon ring and inner turns on the bottom would be awesome... maybe a casting bowl... mmm like your work, my middle name is Scott lol imagine that lol
While I much prefer to have to grain of the wood as the highlight in turned pieces, you did a really nice job with this piece, the yellow and red are artfully blended, and the gold on black for the center medallion and the outer rim are really nice touches to highlight the texture you created. A really nice piece!
Three Seconds into the video and I had to Comment on it..Awesome Sir Super Wood Work

Hi Mark. Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.
The piece was beautiful. More importantly, your narration was superb.

Show design for plant stand
Although I do not understand your language , your works fascinate me . You are very good.

Great to see the process an artist goes through to create..
Hey Micky. Thanks for watching. I'm pleased you found it interesting.
Hi MartinVery impressed. Darn it, now I have another tool to add to my never ending tool list: an airbrush!!Thanks for sharing a beautiful pece.
I think the hardest thing for an artist to do is stop before he/she ruin the piece. You sir have it down pat. Love the piece. Thanks for sharing.
You are what wood turning needs keep up the good work you think out the box
Never tire of watching this lovely technique.....Cheers Martin
Martin, this one is truly outstanding. Great the way you allowed the piece to develop. Some really interesting techniques to get us thinking and hopefully out into the shed. The red edge to the inside of the rim really finished the piece in my opinion. Well done pal. Cheers. Dave
The golden fire project is gorgeous.

Most impressed, an excellent example of air brush and gilt work. Can't wait to try it myself. Cheers.
You beautiful people with talent and style are indeed a gift to humanity. Awesome piece. I love it. Great video.

Stunning Martin, this is the second turning video of yours I’ve watch. The colours on this piece are brilliant.

Very interesting to watch. You have given me more ideas to try on the lathe. Very nice piece.

Beautiful piece Martin! I enjoyed your texturing method, I'd never thought of taking a piece off the lathe and smacking it with random tools. Awesome!

Those colours... I See You! The lidless eye. Looks great :)
Awesome piece Martin!
