- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 ธ.ค. 2024
- Turned 15th - 20th December 2018, this weeks woodturning project was a sycamore and oak pedestal bowl.
It was turned in two parts, both using Intrinsic Colours to dye the wood the required colours. The sycamore bowl was coloured using Earth, Honey and Flame colours whilst the oak base was coloured with black.
The bowl was then finished with Hampshire Sheen Danish Oil, Pre-Thinned Sanding Sealer and then High Gloss Finishing Wax. The base was finished with Hampshire Sheen Black Embellishing Wax and High Gloss.

You do good work Thanks 😊
You are a talented individual that is a beautiful beautiful piece that is something that I would purchase I love the color congratulations that years of understanding the blending of color , I came across your channel strictly by accident subscribed I really enjoy what you do and explaining it to us is part of the joy in understanding how the piece comes together thank you from us in the United States . I hadn’t realized this is a two piece process and while I’m at it I might as well add that only her you would tell her to turn it and come to realize you spend much more time creating unique colors blending the colors together amazing work my friend thank you again .
Thank you for watching and your kind comment. I pleased you enjoyed it and appreciate the time involved in creating a project like this.
I have 44-45 sites I subscribe to, that deal in wood turning, wood/epoxy, wood working, wood sculpturing and I must say tor channel is one of the top five. Your explanation of what your are doing, fixing/correcting mistakes (#95), and the use of coloring with different finishes. Overall good set to watch and learn from, thank you for a job well done.
Fantastic pet bowl and cool finish.
Nice to see your workshop is as messy as the rest of ours. Nice products and great work.
My lathe is too small to do much other than pens or much smaller projects, I did however appreciate these videos on the bowls and the finishes. I've not done any staining or coloring of the wood I turn - course at the Pen level exotic woods are not that hard to come by, so up till this point (about 4 years) I've just finished up "natural" wood. The oil treatment was fascinating - thank you for the lessons! Dave Roush
Im not a big fan of coloring wood, but I have to admit that the piece you have produce, looks stunning.
Hi just watch this video, absolutely beautiful piece of work it’s inspired me to be a bit more adventurous.
Go for it!
You threw me there for a minute with the black, yellow, and orange colors, but I was very impressed with the finished product. It looks great!
Really beautiful shape. Every time you begin to color your pieces I think “Why is he doing that”. But each time I like the finished piece and this was no exception. It is your wood, do what you like to it.
Absolutely gorgeous! One of the nicest coloring jobs I've seen.
Thank for that Terry, very nice of you to say so, pleased you liked it.
How fast will the colour fade?
Beautiful piece
What is the belt sharpener your using, I've had a hard time finding one in like that in Canada?
Very very nice. I like the shape
Like this one so much I had to try a version but with just the colors in the wood. I got out what I thought was a plain blank but it was full of color and quilting. Subscribed because of your finishes but love the channel.
A truly inspiring bowl with a finish to amaze. He has made to look so easy, but the inspiration, imagination and skill to see it done are priceless.
I do like most of your pieces you've turned but this has to be my favourite. You have also just reminded me that it has been many years since I've turned sycamore so you've spurred me on to get hold of some. Thanks for sharing.
I like the way the dark base and light underside make the coloured top ‘pop’ more. A great piece. Thanks for showing 🤓
That's a fine shape to the bowl, with a good balance of colour. The high gloss from the wax finishes it all off.
Very fine work Martin! The color selection, application, and finish really compliment the enchanting form. My favorite of your work so far.
Hi Michael. Many thanks for your kind words. It is one of my favourite pieces, too. I have a few more blanks as nice as this one, and am considering something with a lid next time.
A sweet bowl Martin.
Hi Martin really lovely bowl...colours and shape work very well...nice one !!...... Andy.
Fantastic work Martin.......I love the way you colour your work in a “natural” way that enhances the grain patterns. Inspiring!
What an eye for colour and decoration you have. Never a dull moment watching you work mate. All the best, keep it coming
This is awesome. I'm new to wood turning. I've only had my lathe since November. I have already created 20 different pieces. But you just gave me a whole new perspective and ideas. THANK YOU. Tim in the U.S.
Love the shape Martin.
Beautiful piece Martin
That came out a treat Martin keep the videos coming 👍👍
As usual - very nice. Love the way you use colour to enhance the grain and figure of the wood. Another piece I take inspiration from.
Beautiful project. Love the finish.
Nice to watch you turn! I miss your regular videos!🙂
Inspirational piece of work again Martin. Another project for my bucket list. Keep up the good work.
Great bowl. I would suggest trying a Pre-Stain before coloring as it removes a lot of that blotchy-ness. You will get a much cleaner more even look to your color.
Beautiful piece Martin, good to see you back on the box again
Very nice as always 👍
Very different! Very beautiful! I'm a fan!
Very kind of you to say so, John. Thanks for watching.
The colours are superb Martin. Inspires me. Thank you....
Very beautiful work.
Beautiful piece, and great to have you posting turning content, again.
Stunning! I may have even drooled a little bit. Lol.
Great Communication!
Another lovely piece from you as always, excellent contrasting colour use. Inspirational as ever, thank you!
Classy looking bowl Martin. Love the colours.

Simply lovely x
Really, really nice. What a great finish. I’m definitely going to try and replicate that as much as possible. We have an abundance of figured maple here in the US Midwest so I hope I can get something close! Thanks for the great video!
Another gorgeous turning! Love the coloring and the grain!
Top job martin love the colours 👍
stunning as always thanks for sharing
Truly spectacular, I love the depth of colour and visual texture of the grain. Thanks for inspiring. 👊👊👊
the finish is gorgeous!
Great job Martin, love the way you colour it spot on. You have a great talent, enjoy watching you . Thanks

Amazing work and beautiful color. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing project as usual !

Brilliant, Love it, I must make one myself and hope it is good enough for a picture. Ron. UK
Thanks again for watching, Ron.
Fantastic!
Stunning piece, Martin. Currently saving up for my intrinsic colour set and this made me all the more eager. Thanks, as always, for the inspiration. All the best for 2019
What a truly stunning piece Martin .. shape, colouring, and finish ... spot on as we expect from you.
A joy to watch yout tool skills in action.
Great video mate.

Great video thanks for sharing.
Ahh Martin beautiful piece. You ability with color is amazing.☺️
Really nice job, as always you go into detail so that the dummy's amongst us get the message.
Beautiful!
Wow.. thats is stunning, thank you for sharing 👍😊
An AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL piece! SAFE TURNING, John
Thank you for a great video! I just purchased the sample set of Intrinsic Colors and cannot wait to try. In watching this video I see you used danish oil then sanding sealer then wax. I use Tried and True Danish oil. Is it ok to put Hamshire Sheen High Gloss wax over the top of the danish oil? Thank you
Thanks for watching. So long as the oil is fully cured, an overcoat of the Gloss Wax shouldn't be a problem.
Just stunning! What brand of colors and oil and sanding sealer did you use?
I really liked this one, very inspirational .thankyou Saban
Very very nice 😀
Just loved it thsnkyou
That is ine great looking bowl! I now have a new project to try out! Keep up the good work!
Hi naturally I always enjoy your videos... I have a question to ask you it is bothering me for a while.... what kind of dye you use water base or spirit base? or something different? Thanking you in advance from OZ jack Marashlian
Amazing. I love it.
I just bought the jig you recommended for sharpening. As a novice i can now sharpen like a pro!
Which jig is this?
Great colour and figure Martin! You didn't bugger with the rim though!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That’s beautiful Martin, enjoyed watching!
Gorgeous bowl Martin. I had my doubts about the colour when you started applying it but it's so beautiful. Hope to catch up soon. Teraina ☺️
That bowl has some great color! Awesome work!
Nice bowl. You guys in the UK seem to work with sycamore a lot. I often have troubles with sycamore checking.....even blanks that have been sitting in the shop for 2 years. Maybe I get an inferior variety.
Really lovely work man, top job :)
Beautiful piece. You apply oil then sanding sealer. What base type sealer do you use? Cellulose or shellac?
Thank you. When the oil is completely cured and dry, I use a cellulose sealer most of the time.
Hi Martin, super video thank you...I have a question: now that you/we know about Yorkshire Grit, would it be advisable to use YG after colouring and danish oil but before sanding sealer? Would it blur the colouring adversely etc? I’m about to try colouring for the first time!
Beautiful piece Martin, I’m new to woodturning and your site, can you tell me the name of your colouring dyes and who supply them please.
Hi Ken,
Thanks for watching. Glad you like the piece. The colours are from the Intrinsic Colour Collection and you can get them from a range of shops in the UK including my own shop at www.thewoodturningshop.com/product-category/brands/hampshire-sheen/
All the best,
Martin
hi Martin, I'm new to wood turning your videos are amazing, I'm learning some great tips and techniques from you, many thanx. just a quick question mate whats the wood colouring called thinking of investing in some, didn't think you could do this it gets better and better lol the bowl is an amazing colour WOW. many thanx Geoff p.s keep up the great videos they are really tutorial. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching! I'm using the Intrinsic Colour Collection from Hampshire Sheen. Suppliers list is here: www.hampshiresheen.com/buy
Superb as usual Martin. Are there any disadvantages quick drying with the heat gun compared to waiting overnight? Oh and our students still talk about your visit and are now basing some of their final products this year around turned pieces. You are always welcome back if passing the Nottingham area!!
Outstanding!you've got a new subscriber and I cant wait to binge watch your other videos!
Gorgeous!
Very nice piece of wood. What kind of colours do you use?
I very much enjoyed your lathe skills, Martin. However, is there any reason why you didn't put a sander/sealer coat prior to dyeing the inside? That would have evened out the coloured finish coat and left not so much of a blotched stain coat.
Hi Marty. Good question. Yes, I want colour to penetrate as far into the wood as possible which would be inhibited by applying sealer beforehand.
Hope that helps.
Martin
Hey, Martin, I think you owe it to yourself to do a test to conclusively prove (or disprove) your assumption. The trick is to first sand down to P400 (just as you already do), apply the sander-sealer then do a light sanding of P400 again. What that then does is fill the more open pores but leaves the other, more "flat" areas open to the dye or staining which follows. I really encourage you to try this out, as I believe the results will be considerably more to your taste - yet allowing the dye or stain to penetrate where it needs to. I'd really be interested in how this procedure works for you.
very nice
Love this bowl What is the name /type of the wood colours /stains that you use ? Are they food safe ?
at 17:04 did anyone else look at the base and see the magnetic collars from Wild Wild West with Will Smith and Kevin Kline?
Ummm.....I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, but thanks for watching so closely!!
Watching this again as I'm just about to purchase some wood stains. Water based or spirit base, that is the question?
I use water based colours so I don't feel forced to rush the application before spirit based colours dry off.
@@msabansmith so it's some HS intrinsic colours for me then. I hate rushing when I'm being creative. 🙂
Very original beautiful work!
Hello friend very nice work.
from where did you buy that electric turntable.
where your dish was on. come it from the internet
what is the brand of spray on colour that you put with a paper towel ? Remember cam in Canada.
Hi Martin,
May I first of all wish you and your family a very HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW YEAR.
Another great video as always, do you ever get fed up of beeing sooooooooooooo good lol?
My question is, I'm looking for a 'thin' 1 to 1.5 inch thick slab of either sycamore or maple.... a light wood without any heavy figuring in it! It's for a piece of Pyrography either for my wife or her church! Depending on it works out! Do you know of anyone who mills such piece's? I would prefer it to have the grain running the length of the piece, not a disc of the trunk if you know what I mean! From watching your video sycamore looks light in colour which would be perfect for Pyrography as you must already know! I've not burnt sycamore before but been told it's a dream to burn as long as it's dried/cured enough.
Cheers, take care mate👍😉👌
That turned out really really nice! Great video. What brand of high gloss wax did you use?
Thanks, Justin. I used Hampshire Sheen High Gloss finishing wax on it.
Very nice job Martin. Buffing boots lol where did ya serve?
Lovely piece Martin, what are you using for colours
Hi Brent. Thanks for watching. I'm using the Intrinsic Colour Collection in this video. If you're interested, you can find stockists of all the products here: www.hampshiresheen.com/buy
Thanks@@msabansmith
Sanding sealer over oil? Thought you put oil over sanding sealer. Please expound about this. thx.
Oil is supposed (designed) to penetrate wood. If you seal it first, the oil cannot penetrate and may leave a sticky residue on the surface. Therefore, oil first for it to penetrate and seal over the top when cured. Also, if using an oil for a food-contact piece, it is not advisable to use any sealer at all and you are best advised to keep those items finished in a simple manner as possible
Très bien! What is the brand name of the color dye you used?
Hi, Martin. Nice piece. I have question- both of my Hampshire Sheen waxes have dried out and are pretty unusable. Is there something I can mix in with it to soften it up a bit?
Hi Bob. Thanks for watching. Can you drop me a line with where and when you tin was purchased and I'll look into it for you.
Boxed sets of colours have been available from The Walnut Log for quite some time. They have a new order arriving on Tuesday which includes colours. And Wood World of Texas have had the range since last Autumn. I'm expecting to be shipping more over in the next few weeks.
M. Saban Smith Woodturning Thanks, Martin. I bought a tin of both the normal, and High Gloss when you were at the woodturners symposium in Kansas City a year and a half ago. In fact, I met you at the booth. The stuff worked great for a few months, and then it just got caked up, dry, and unusable. Not sure how it happened since they have a nice airtight screw-on kid. Bob
Thanks, Bob. That was when Jeff was making the product for me under license. There was at least one batch that was a bad one and suffered from drying out far earlier than it should.
Jeff knows about the batch. If you contact him directly, he will be able to sort you out.
There is a method that Jeff uses to rejuvenate his dry product. He may tell you the method.
All Hampshire Sheen available in the US since July '18 is UK made product...which is made entirely by my own hands!
M. Saban Smith Woodturning Well, I sent Walnut Log a note several days ago, describing my little problem, and no response. Then I remembered that I had sent them a note through their website about a year ago, shortly after buying the product, and never heard from them then either. I would have to say that your U.S. distributor's customer service is pretty lousy. I'll just write it off to experience. I sure wouldn’t buy anything through them again.
That is disappointing to hear. I'll mention it to Jeff next time we speak. You can also buy from Wood World of Texas. They are stocking most of the UK made range.
