Wow so nice to see how you go about this one. I'd seen Mike have a go at your scorching. I'm sat on the fence as to if I like it or not but the inner design is fantastic. You mentioned about earlier videos, I only seem to have videos starting from about 6 before this one when sorted by age. Excellent work and look forward to getting through the rest of the videos.
Nice job, enjoying your videos from here in the US. When I'm doing pyrography, I print the image to be transferred with a laser printer, printed in reverse, then rub the back of the paper with lacquer thinner to transfer the image. The thinner releases the toner from the paper and it sticks nicely to the wood. Much faster and darker than carbon paper. You should give that a try.
Good idea that, Matt. I've not got a laser printer, just an 'old fashioned' inkjet printer - does that work too, do you know, and how does it effect removing any remaining toner lines when you're done burning? All the best, Martin
Ink jet will NOT work, has to be laser, but a photocopy might. The toner doesn't soak into the wood, just lays on the surface, so I swipe it with a green scrubbie or a piece of steel wool. I've actually subscribed and commented on my other youtube channel as The World You Don't Know but this channel has my real name. As you will know from my comment I have recently discovered wood turning. Have yet to turn a pen but have done a few little bowls and they came out very well although only 5/6 inches in diameter. I'd love to see you do a Sovereign Irish harp emblem on a platter. I intend to do one but it will probably be a year or two away. Ive yet to get my own lathe. Really love your work its inspired me to become a full time wood turner. Thanks.

I loved this video. That piece is really beautiful and a credit to you and your stickability (is 'stickability' a word? It is now). I have a Peter Child machine I bought second-hand in great condition so it might get a run out soon. A wee tip -using that banjo extension for outboard turning puts a lot of stress on both it and the standard banjo at the lathe bed so I cut a length of 3" x 2" to support the extension in case I get a catch and the force breaks the cast iron (cast iron is very brittle). My engineering mates told me to do this so I listened did what I was told and it does give me some comfort knowing the set-up is more secure. Super video, thank you. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Hi Martin, you mention in this video that you use the Star tec 171 from Axminster, my husband has purchased one on the recommendation of this video, He would like to purchase some other tips for various effects, the instructions which come with the machine are poor, please could you confirm which tips from other makes are suitable for this machine. I'm not sure if it's because you're working in wood and in wood turning and wood working they have more terms for things like platter and bowl, which I obviously know exist in the rest of the English language, but I'm saying that maybe they are used more often in wood working and turning to describe the shapes of things than in the rest of the language, or if it's just that I prefer the comedy provided by overly simple language describing relatively complex things, but I CAD and 3D print my designs, and I don't call things platters or bowls or whatnot, but things like "this thing I made" or "this thing I made #4" (note, not version 4. It would be completely different from #1) or "round thingy" or "flour thingy I guess". These are all the actual, titles of some of my pieces. Anyway, I just thought I'd share. Great video, really impressive piece. I recently found your channel after TH-cam recommended a bunch of wood turning stuff after I watched a bunch of machining videos, and 1/2
2/2 I have to say, not only are your videos really well put together, in fact, I'd say that out of all the wood turning channels I've seen, you have the best video quality, but your projects are always really unique and interesting, at least from my perspective, and even when you aren't quite so happy with the final product of a piece, I'm always impressed by your creativity and the quality of your work. Why did you need to find the center when you had previously screwed a screw into the center in order to draw your circle? I've seen this several times now and I don't understand it.
