  • Puppies have a lot to learn in their early months and learning to be sociable with other dogs and people is vital. It's not just about being non-aggressive but about learning the subtleties of dog language.
When we filmed this video, Nando Brown from In the Doghouse Dog Training Centre in Spain, was in England not only to give talks but to do some important socialisation with his puppy Fizz.
In this video, he explains not only how to go about socialising your puppy but gives tips on how to make the pup's experiences as positive as possible.

Thank God I found this video because I didn't know where to turn with my girl. Every time she met a dog she would sniff them and immediately go into play and jumping and barking at them. I'm going to try the time out thing. I have done it with other things like play biting and its worked so ill see how I can do it now. I just don't know how I'm gonna put her in time out outside of the house tho

My female 1.5year old dog gets excited when she sees a dog from a distance, but her body language changes as soon as she goes near the dog(her tail goes inside, her face goes down, she bends a little bit). She gets scared and doesn't play, basically she surrenders I guess. What can be done?

I have a 15 week old German Shepherd baby girl. She's full of energy and she's a handful.
How do I get her to get to know my other dogs without her trying to jump and pounce on my other dogs, 3 are small breed and I'm afraid she's going to hurt them with all that energy she has and I have a senior Lab who constantly growls and shows her teeth at the puppy. So basically my new puppy has other dogs at home to play with but 3 are too small and can get hurt and 1 large senior dog who wants to attack the puppy. Any suggestions?

My dog is the bully. He is 13 weeks, 25 lbs, and likes to find the dog who will submit and he will always get on top of them and play rough even if they are obviously communicating that they don’t like it. I stop him by pulling him off and I tell him “no” sometimes sternly so he won’t ignore me but he struggles and I was told to not pull his harness so much because he will learn to resent his harness. Any advice on handling this? I will try the time out method I’m just worried he will learn to hate his harness this way

I have a submissive dog that sometimes pees when he meets another dog. He gets more comfortable eventually, but at first, he pees. Is that OK or something negative?

I socialized my Shiba Inu when he was a puppy and took him to the dog park every day. One day the older dogs were running and they ran him over. I did not take him to dog parks for a long time. Then when my dog was 1 year old he went through this fear period where he was fearful of other dogs. Now at 4 years old he walks by other dogs when on lead and is very calm. He interacts and plays with dogs that he interacted and played with when he was young but antisocial withunfamiliar dogs. I was told that Shiba Inus are antisocial. My dog has to see a dog a few times before he decides he wants to interact with that dog. So if we see a dog while on the walk he will not be running up wanting to greet or play with that dog but might attack the unfamiliar dog. My question to you is --> is it important that my dog be social and interact with other dogs (should I push the socialization, is he ready?) Or should I just let it be ok that he plays with the dogs he already knows and just calmly pass by the other dogs we meet or see?

Not a profecional but do have experiance with dogs and other pets.
Id say dont worry too mutch becouse if you do your dog wil learn from you that he should be scared just do whatever feels good dont avoid things just let it all happen but maby if there is a verry reactive dog then indeed ignore it and just pass it, dont walk atound it in a big circle just pass it with confidence.
In the end you and your dog know whats best for him and if you know how to comunicate with him then shizzle wil be fine. Hope this helps.

My puppy does really well when meeting other dogs. However he has yet to meet one that has tried to play with him.

My dog is 10 months old. Is it to late to socialize them? I also have an an almost 2 year old who I brought everywhere when she was young but she was so afraid of other dogs and humans that she would hid or go after the other dog. I really want her to get over this fear but I'm wondering if it's to late? Thank you
