      I found that many greenhouses are accepting of dogs visiting but less dog traffic for young pups. I also like that with less dog traffic there is less exposure to potential health risks while they have their puppy immune systems ❤
      I'm on my way to one today with my 10-week-old GSD poodle mix. His service dog parents had an oopsie litter 😂 We didn't intentionally breed the Germy-Poo but I think we've somehow won the genetic lottery here ❤

    I just took our GSD to Lowes for some exposure and it went really well. I guess google figured out what I was up to, because this video popped up when we got back. We stayed in the parking lot and just by the garden center entrance of Lowes. Our pup tends to bark when people approach, so we worked on focusing on me and putting him in a sit. Within a few minutes he was calm and we left while he was still having fun. It was probably 5-10 minutes in total and now he is home and totally wiped out from all the new sensations. He fell asleep right inside the front door. He didn't even make it to his bed! The puppy phase is tough, but doing the work like this pays off. Thanks for the tips!

    Thank you so much for the video. Great info. We had such a conundrum when we first brought our mini aussie puppy home (8 weeks old) a few months ago. Our vet and breeder told us to keep our puppy at home and don't bring him outside (anywhere) until he was fully vaccinated. On the other hand, our dog trainer told us we need to expose him to different environment asap. So we held and carried our puppy to home depot when he was 9 weeks old and got scolded by some random lady aka Karen about risking our puppy with Parvo and etc.. :-). Damn if you do and damn if you don't :-)

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      It's tough when you are hearing two things! Unfortunately, not all vets or store associates are aware of the effects it will have on a puppy if they are not exposed to the outside world until they are fully vaccinated. You were doing the right thing by holding your pup! Keep trying. Choose a different store. You can also drive to these locations and stay in the car to let your pup watch the world go by.

    I greatly appreciate you and your videos! Thank you! I've been exposing my 14 week old boxer puppy to COVID safe people and places. We started obedience class last Friday and she was in HEAVEN! All the people, puppies, big dogs and I hope I did the right thing. She's a beautiful pup and people are just attracted to her so I let pretty much everyone pet and talk to her. Of course, for the first 12 weeks we mainly explored my land and she made best friends with my only neighbor, a 76 year old woman. She also has had visits with my mom and daughters. I really don't want to mess up my "Pandemic puppy" HELP!!!!

    I feel like I misunderstood the socialization need of a puppy before this video. Prior to this taking out my three month old puppy, I assumed socialization might has well be get as much interaction with the world so they aren’t scared of things. This video really puts into perspective why you need to have proper exposure not just socializing with everyone. Going to work on these things from here on out and get him steered in the right direction :)
    thank you.

      I really had this problem as well, thinking “oh she’s scared of this person place or thing” we should take her up to it so she “gets used to it” we didn’t realize that with a “fearful” puppy. That was actually making her fear worse!! We have been trying this more and she has been getting way more comfortable around people, other dogs. Bikes. And will walk in a new environment without running away from us.

    There's this puppy train ride about a state or two over, and it has stops for ice cream and pup cups and stuff like that, and I think it would be really good later on in socialization or somewhere in the middle even to get them used to transportation as well as other dogs, people, and foods

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, that sounds like the "World Cup" of socialization. For young puppies, they are still in little league soccer! So it will be important to work up to that level of excitement.

    We live in a rural setting and our pup rarely sees other dogs or even people. She is already 9 months old. I wish i had started taking her out much sooner. She is extremely fearful of other people and dogs. She doesn't bark at cattle but will bark and become agitated by other people and dogs. Any pointers for a 9 month old puppy she is a medium dog a red heeler and is about 40 lbs and very strong. I am worried her fearful attitude might turn into aggression.

    Our 4 month old beagle puppy was originally our foster and had parvo. We had to quarantine him in the beginning so now he is very timid outside of our home. He is very playful and high energy at home and on walks and he loves our other dog (who is not really into him), but he is timid around other dogs, hates the car and is scared of being in other places. We took him to my sister's house this past weekend to meet her very friendly dogs and he was terrified of them and of being in her house. He just wanted to hide under the coffee table or crawl onto the couch and go to sleep (he goes to sleep at the vet too. I think he just shuts down). When we brought him home from my sister's, he was his usual crazy, energetic, puppy self. He loves going on walks and loves other people, but if another dog comes up to him he cowers, even if it's another puppy. He has a puppy playdate this week with another little dog, so I'm hoping he'll get his confidence up with this puppy.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some dogs just never love hanging out with other dogs. It sounds like your sister's dogs were a little too much for him. You might need to find a smaller, calmer dog, or he might just be more of a people dog!

    • @sfuterfas
      @sfuterfas ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HowToTrainADreamDog thanks for your feedback! All of our dogs have tended to be anti-social with other dogs. I was hoping this one was different because he absolutely loves trying to play with our older chi mix, who wants nothing to do with him, but then when there is a dog who actually wants to play with him, he freaks out and just lays on the ground in terror, even if it's another puppy. Hopefully this upcoming playdate with the little dog will help him with his confidence.

    First, I love your videos. I'm prepping for my little pup who is arriving in 2 weeks, and your info is really helpful. My question is about socialization in the city- NYC. I live in the suburbs, but do spend a lot of time in the city caring for my parents. I'm planning to carry the pup and set her down to do her business, but I want to begin socializing her there, from a puppy sling. I don't want to overwhelm the puppy, but just about everything outside is loud.. sirens, cars, lots of people, big buildings. How would you suggest I balance this without overwhelming the puppy?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question, because you want to make sure the experiences are always positive for this exposure training to benefit the puppy. The best way to know if it's good for the puppy is by watching the body language. We can guide you through this in a personalized way at the PRO level of our course. www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/

    Thank you for your videos! My pup stayed for his first 3 months mostly indoors (pandemic) and only interactions with the household he was at, he made a big change in moving to the big city about a month ago and he's been getting exposed to new stuff all the time.
    I thought I was doing the right thing by getting him out with me everywhere, he's now almost 7 months and he's a sweet heart but I do notice some lack of confidence in some aspects on a daily basis, like barking when people approach our door or pulling and growling to dogs the minute he gets out of the house. Any suggestions into making him more confident and social? Again thank you I've been watching your videos a lot!

    Hey! I am subscribed and have been binge watching. I am a bit concerned that I am getting my pomeranian puppy too late. I am getting her in a week and a half, and she will be 11 weeks old. The vet told me I need to get her NOW, because he said that its more of a risk of her becoming a yappy dog than contracting a disease before distemper vaccines. Do you think I will have enough time to get in the training before the window expires?

      @GameNerd423 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL, I asked this questions about mid way through the video, and I see you literally said the same thing. I am a registered nurse, but the breeder still insisted she wants to keep the puppy til 11 weeks, because she is concerned about hypoglycemia. Can you tell me if this is ok for the training window? Thankfully, I am trying to be prepared. This is my first puppy in many many years.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog

      Hi Claudia! These are great questions. We always encourage the pups to stay with the litter until about 8-10 weeks of age, it sounds like your pup gets 1 extra week to learn from mom and littermates. Don't worry when the pup comes to you, there's still plenty your pup will learn from you. You will still be within what we call the critical imprint period where exposure to the world around should be positive to make the best lasting impression.

    Would bringing the puppy in a carrier/sling with me during my current dogs' walks (their shorter one of the day, about 15-20mins) everyday be good for socialisation as well while the pup is still under 16 weeks? I live right by a park and the middle of town and normally go on either one of a set route during this walk so it would expose the puppy to alot of different things. Is feeding them part of their meal/letting them have something like a kong or lickmat while in one of these new places a good way to teach them to be settled too?

Is this overstimulation or just getting used to meeting new people? I don't have any friends with dogs nor do I have a backyard (living in an apartment) Any places you would recommend for a puppy who is still waiting on their last vaccines, other than the home improvement stores? Other places you can work on socializing your pup is your local park, the pet store, the vet, and the groomer. Remember, you don't need to get out of the car or walk around for it to count as exposure training. You can simply watch the world go by from your car!

    Hi there. What can I do to eliminate my puppy's trauma? Story goes, we were walking nicely at a specific street, then a huge rott pops out of an open gate and charged him. I'm fortunate that I carried him immediately and kept him from harm. Thank you and have a blessed day ahead

      We don't recommend the pouches. It limits the dog's freedom to move away from something scary, and it doesn't allow you to see subtle signs of body language that indicate comfort or stress.

    My biggest confusion about socialization is that the most important age for socialization is 8-12 weeks or 8-16 weeks but puppies are not fully vaccinated until they are 16 weeks old and you are supposed to avoid public places with high dog traffic. I understand the parking lot step but what about next step, like taking your puppy to a pet store? Just to keep him in a carrier?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Good question! You can hold your pup or keep them in a carrier. You can also stay in the car and watch the people and dogs go by, reinforcing with treats for calm behavior when the people and dogs are in view.

    Our little dachshund puppy caught a cold and needs to stay longer with the breeder, and due to a knock-on effect on our schedules for pick-up, we can only pick him up when he’s 16 weeks already. I’ve voiced my stress around socialisation, but the breeder seems to rather be annoyed by our concern. He’s now growing up in the countryside and I wonder how he will adjust to our inner city life if it’s only introduced outside of the critical window. Any tips for post-window socialisation, if the delay is inevitable?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      We recommend you continue to advocate for your puppy during this time. There are plenty of things they can do to socialize your puppy without leaving the countryside, such as noise machines and jungle gyms. Check out this video that you may be able to send to your breeder, Puppy Playground Using the Jungle Gym to Build Confidence: th-cam.com/video/qlS4vFhdALc/w-d-xo.html
      Aside from this, you can still do everything as you would if your puppy were 8 weeks when you brig him home. The information just won't be as easily soaked up!

    My puppy is 18weeks old (all shots up to date). I took her outside daily 3-4times/day. However she only walks/runs other place than my apartment area. She walks only few steps and sits/watch forever in my apartment area. I spent almost one hour and walked only 20-30steps. But when she went to other places, she walked /ran continuously. I don't know why

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Remember the walks are for our dogs, so allowing them to stop and sniff and explore or just watch the world go by is ok. If you think though that she is stopping and sitting due to overwhelm, we might need to dial back on the exposure training and work up to more distracting locations.

    When do you start taking them out after bringing them home? Our girl will be 9 weeks when she comes home. I know she has to get used to her new family and home but then I also know it’s important to socialize…I don’t want to stress her out. Am I overthinking this? 😵‍💫

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This really depends on your dog and her natural pace at which she acclimates. We generally recommend for the first week to keep her environment limited to just the immediate family and to only a few puppy proofed areas of the home. As you see she is more relaxed you can start to expand her world a bit and expose her to new things (always done positively).

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Melissa! Socialization doesn't always mean interaction. You can socialize your pup by letting them observe other dogs from afar and rewarding them for calm behavior. You may find a good playmate from a local dog facebook group or even from calling and asking your vet. Be sure to find a playmate similar in size, temperament, and vaccine status. Not all socialization classes are suitable for all dogs, so you will need to assess the factors like the energy level and size of the other dogs, if it is run by a dog trainer, etc.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As long as you start far enough away that your dog can remain calm while seeing or hearing it then that would be a good plan. Generally we'd stay far away for several sessions before getting closer. You can even start at home with YT videos that have garbage truck sounds, start at a low level and slowly over several sessions you can turn up the volume. While it's not the same as a real garbage truck you can start to associate the sound of trucks, airbreaks, compressor etc. as a possive thing with your dog.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as you are parked, and your pup is able to remain calm, you can allow your pup out of the crate to look at the people and dogs passing by through the window. We want to reward for calm behavior when the stimulus (dog, person, bird, etc.) is in view.

    I have the opportunity to adopt a 15 week old Shihpoo puppy and I've been told that's no-no since the dog is past the prime socialization age of 8-10 weeks. Is it really a bad idea to adopt of 15 week old puppy? Is it really too late?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's never too late. Puppies can learn new things at any age. The age before 16 weeks is most advantageous, but 15 weeks old is still a very young puppy and can definitely benefit from positive socialization and exposure. If you like everything else you know about the puppy, then go ahead. Try to get as much information about the parents, as the genetics from the puppy's parents will determine a lot about their behavior.

    Socialization depends on breed and the temperament of the parents as well. When my dog was a puppy, I let anyone who wanted to pet him do so, and I took him to the dog park (carefully supervising of course) for as long as I could. That’s because I knew that at maturity, he would be very aloof with strangers and very selective/intolerant of other dogs. If I didn’t let at least one person touch him every time we went out, if someone did touch him as a mature dog, he would have snapped at them. Same with other dogs. If I didn’t let him play and learn how to interact with other dogs, he would have been a lot more selective (or maybe even aggressive) than he is now.
