Good morning Stonnie thank you for another great video, especially going back over the tie back scenario, so easily forgotten .
May I ask, we have a serious increase in dog theft in the UK and they use the friendliness of dogs to their advantage to be successful in the theft, they also gonout if their way to become familiar in areas so people don't see them and on occasions dogs with them as a threat. Is there a way to get balance for my pet owners without giving them the protection training my mali's have.

@StonnieDennis Particular people In a society that are stealing dogs predominantly around Christmas and valentines, where they can make the most money, sadly.
I ask the above question as my Malinois are both socialised and habituated, despite the sport/ protection trained which allows them to partake in fun and games also woth the other dogs, however I find the level of obedience I instill in my dogs, who are happy amd balanced, os t the same as others want yet expect a recall in all situations, so at what point or safety mechanism can we use other than a recall which may prevent dogs being stolen if we are to allow people to say hi etc to our dogs? All advice gratefully received

Do you have a video on "Leash Aggressive" dogs and how to correct this behavior? I have a 10 year old female Lab/Shephard mix who is very different indoors than outdoors on a leash.
I live in an old folks home. Actually, my wife and I are the homeowners. If Honey wants to visit, we old folks would love to have her. What a good dog!
One of the best tips I ever got from you Stonnie was “go to the dog park early” I love using my dog to meet fun and good people in my community but I wasn’t having much luck at the dog park (I’m in a city) but I saw that video and started making sure I was part of the before work and right after work crowd. Suddenly I found my local suspicious dog park was full of good people and I met so many of my neighbours. Really appreciate the advice sir!

I adopted a dog that was abandoned at 6 months because her owner failed miserably to socialise her with other dogs. It takes a lot of effort to face the difficulty but the improvement has happened!
I agree regarding socialization. I've made this a priority and my dog loves meeting new dogs. One of the people we met early on invited us to join a daily play group. He gets to play with his friends and I get to interact with their owners, who I otherwise never would have met.

at 3,5 years Blake has developed as a polite, funny and easygoing blacklab.
until 3 years he tended to jump too much to people, just for joy. In the last 6 months he has been much calmer.

Stonnie, I have used your techniques training my 9 month old deaf pit bull. We’ve only had her since New Years Day.
Yesterday we took the dogs on a 4 mile walk and then popped into Home Depot on our way home.
We were approached by a couple that trains service dogs (in the early stages) and they told us our dogs were better behaved than some professional trainers that come in there to train.
That is entirely due to you and your videos. Thank you so much for your wisdom. ✌🏼🕊️💜

I took my dog to all positive dog puppy socialising classes , and all the dogs were in little cubicles cut off from the other puppies. The trainer didn't agree with dogs mixing , I didn't continue. I wanted my dog to be able to mix . He's a bit older now he's got his friends who he sees regularly. He does have some dogs he doesn't particularly like , I cam almost 100 % predict the dogs he won't like
My black labrador is 5 months old and he looks so much like that little girl... anyway we have been socializing him and he loves the attention and other dogs! I like your teaching techniques!

Thank you Stonnie. I've posted before to you about my adventures with my now 3 yr old Red Dobie girl Lucinda and my old border collie Jezebel. The more freedom and socialization a dog, especially a working breed gets, the better they do. My dogs have behaved better than most of the kids in my community do. Taking Lucy to as may places and meeting as many people has made her an amazing girl, no surprize to anyone who knows dobermans. Teach your dog the same manners you would if you do or want kids. It comes down to the simple question of Who drives this bus?

Many years ago my neighbour over the back had a big boy who was stunning.
I was doing childcare at home, and sometimes he would pop through the gap in the fence and hang out with us. 😅
He came right inside the house at times, and he has extremely gentle and loving with the small children. 😊❤🌿🙆🏻♀️👍🏽
Naturally I was always in close supervision, as I am with my own dogs around children or vulnerable people.

When any aware and competent human like yourself tries to expose and correct untruths in any field, most people that believe these untruths will be resistant to their exposure. Trusting the coach is a requirement to gain the knowledge and expertise of the coach. Hi Stonnie, im raising a guide dog ; Sheba is a 13 female month golden/retriever mix. For the most part she is a calm attentive polite dog and we've accomplished that by doing exactly as you say by getting out there in new situations and places everyday. Last week i contacted our paramedic service and they offered to meet up and desensitize around sirens, inside ambulances etc. It was a great experience for them and us. As you may guess, we walk ALOT and for the most part walk by other dogs out in general public so Sheba is learning to remain focussed. I will interact with other people and their dogs if they appear to be having difficulty or if somewhat reactive. I'll offer multiple walk bys because Sheba is pretty good at it. That allows the other handler the opportunity to practise a sit or a calmer walk by. Of course only if they want it. I do have trouble with jumping sometimes, it's not all the time. . Back tieing practice starts tomorrow. PS she does have regular dog playdates and i love your philosophies and style

This is excellent. I live in a very socially insular country and brought my dog from the States in a region where people are outgoing, friendly, and dog owners always let their dogs greet each other if it's safe. My dog is just as lonely as I've been! We're moving and getting a second dog this year. Loneliness is indeed an epidemic and I'm glad you spoke about it.

We just adopted a black lab mix. We think possibly mixed with great Dane but we aren't sure. He has a very mellow personality and also very gentle. Your videos have been super helpful.

My 4.5 month gsd barks like mad at other dogs, doesn't seem fear based, but could be. I've been out with him everyday since I had him at 12 weeks. Once he's introduced to the other dog he'll calm down, but that initial stage is so hard.

Just a note on your backties comment: it’s something I’ve thought a lot about. 95% of dogs I train have worked with other trainers. None of them have used backties, or long lines for that matter.
All I do is teach recall on a nature walk, using a long line. And then backtie them and teach stay and being calm and respectful.
I learned it out of necessity to train my own dogs. I believe most trainers today learn training from TH-cam, not through perfecting their own craft
Very few TH-cam dog trainers own a kennel or have a lifetime of experience raising and training dogs; the ones who do rarely get noticed because they are simple, hard working, people who aren’t well versed in social media marketing. A simple way to know who’s selling wolf tickets is to notice whether or not they use stock (commercial) footage in their videos.

This is fantastic Stonnie. I feel like whenever I’m going through something with my dog you post a video about it 😃. I have a super friendly and social Catahoula mix. She’s 1. I’ve been training her with food and she’s a good girl. Social and friendly. We have two kids and she’s great with them. She knows commands and listens pretty good. But not the most polite when meeting other people and dogs. More polite with dogs than people actually. Never aggressive. Just over excited and I cannot break her jumping up. At this point she’s better than a few months back but I can’t seem to break that behavior in full. After all she’s 70 lbs. I feel like that was my fault for taking her to the dog park super often early on. But this video was super helpful. I’ve research a lot in her breed and work her everyday. But any suggestions on the jumping up and meeting dogs politely after puppyhood has past is really welcome.
My 10 month Catahoula x bulldog is very wary of new people and super friendly with dogs but she’s very sure of herself and people often think she’s being aggressive/ dominant. I think part of it is she looks like a pit bull or bully breed. My 2 remaining issues are mouthing and jumping up on people (only ever me or people she is very comfortable with) it’s hard because it’s a sign of affection so it’s not very nice to train her out of it completely. So I have trained her a command of how to jump up on me so I can show some love, but only on command. then when I know she’s super excited, say when we have just got home I will back tie her or leash her and stand on the leash not allowing her to jump. Then rewarding while she sits there calmly. It’s working but it’s very slow process and only slightly gets a little bit better every day just got to keep at it I guess. And 1 is still very young for a large breed dog so don’t give up hope. My dog is near fully grown and 35 kgs but still very much a puppy.

I feel this type of training is great! However, where I live in Michigan a lot of people do not want dogs to come greet them . If so then these people will comment on the dog owner and say your dog needs some training ! I have two young male littermates and they get overstreed when they are out together and I don't know what to do with them.

My 2y/o dog I adopted 5mo ago loves to nip. Started out by chasing the other dog, playing, then nippy out of excitement which brought distress to the other dogs trying to get away. I leash him immediately when this happens and afraid a fight might break out because of the way he plays. I think I could learn a lot from your videos as Jackson is a lot of work between food possessiveness/greed, whinnying constantly for attention, and separation anxiety.
Hey stonnie - love your videos! Would love to see a video about how to manage high drive/energy pups. I have a 1 yr old working lab and he’s amazing, but i struggle sometimes with him becoming overstimulated when we are training. Ie its hard to keep him calm and focused - any tips?
Great video. I had a friend who was a dog trainer for an assistance dog program. She usually had a foster puppy in training and she had two adult labs of her own. She decided that the dogs needed to believe that she gave permission for everything so, for example, she would shout out the command "Drink" when she saw them drinking. She also decided that they should only get pieces of their cheap, generic kibble for training rewards as good tasting stuff should be reserved only for very critical lessons. The dogs were not allowed to play with other dogs and be dogs because that was determined to detract from their focus on their owner and being a service dog. Maybe there is some truth in that. I will say that observing the training and these dogs made me very sad for any of these pups who found themselves predestined to become service dogs. Some failed out of the program because of anxiety and that was more than you might think but what dog would want to be micromanaged and brainwashed into being a robot so to speak.
Anyway, here is the point I was leading up to: Her own pet dogs were the two most uninteresting, boring, unthinking labradors I have ever met and yet they were considered to be very well trained. They were kept in crates for large parts of the day and had no idea how to entertain themselves or play with each other. They simply looked to the owner or me (when I was dog sitting) to pat them and throw a tennis ball. I could not stand to be around these two dogs because it was sad to see how two initially vibrant little puppy souls, bred to be active and smart had been so dumbed down physically and mentally. Yes, they could do a few tricks but how sad is that? The biggest highlight of their day was to eat their cheap bowl of kibble and then to eat their own poop when let outside.

I have a wonderful lab x border collie x NZ huntaway (herding dog) boy who was gifted to me when he was four because his owner felt sad that he couldn't give him enough time and attention, and had to keep him in a kennel and run most of the time.
Since he has been with me he has become a very confident, calm and happy dog. He has learned to socialise well, and since I adopted a rescued puppy as well he has learned how to play.
He is now 8 and my girl is two and a half. They are best buddies! 😍
He's loving the freedom, and the comfort of being inside at home as well as adventures in the outdoors!

Uncle Stonnie, I have a lab cross the exact same age. He’s suddenly started going through a fear period with strangers. He balks away or goes on the “aggressive barking” warpath. Any suggestions? He’s exposed to many dogs, people and environments so this has come as a surprise.
My fox red is 3 and I think is fearful of bicycle riders. On walks, if bikes come by, I try to calmly move her off of the street, distract with treats, and if she's calm after bike passes, is praised and we continue our walk. Prob l em is it doesn't always work. And she's quite strong, pulling toward bikes. How can I learn how to help her to be calm around bikes? Thanks. Love your videos.

I guess it was 20 years ago... but Cricket was being a young bird dog running around in a hunt... the lady who is now the South Dakota Governor did not like Cricket running around, and I guess Cricket also killed a chicked... so she put a bullet in Cricket and killed him... it is all in the news around me...I guess the lady is doing a book, and it seems like she said "That is what does in South Dakota."
I was so sad for Cricket loving being around on a hunt...I look as how you train hunting dogs and (even though it is 20 years ago) I am so sad that Cricket died because someone did not know how to train a hunting dog...
The first report of Cricket (she is not a he...) that I heard was a story of the hunting trip...and that Cricket was "out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her live." It barely talked about a chicken.
Now the reports are more about a chicken being killed by the Cricket and less about Cricket being having a blast in a hunting trip...

This is a big deal for me. I live in Seattle and people with a Lab (and many other breeds) will cross the street when they see me and my chihuahua coming toward them. Look people, let me be the judge of my dog’s safety. It happens that my dog is extremely outgoing, loves big dogs and wants to say hi to every dog she sees. l think it’s ridiculous that people can’t spend one minute to let their dog sniff my dog and say hi. If they don’t become BFF, that’s Ok. Now, many people like to interact but about half are anti-social (looking at you Millenials) 😮 Get over yourself and let your dog become socialized. 😁👹🐶🧑🎤
