Hardest part is finding “good” dogs to socialise with. Unfortunately majority of dog owners at dog parks etc thinks their hyperactive dog is friendly when they are downright rude and too much for nervous dogs.
Our neighbor broke her wrist last week because another dog ran full blast at her and jumped knocking her down. Needless to say she doesn’t take her dog to the dog park anymore. She also mentioned that even taking hers for walks that dogs being loose in yards run up and scare her dog. I told her to start to carry pepper spray. Done. If someone has a problem with it, then they should watch Joel’s videos on how to control their dogs. End of story.

It is difficult to find people to work with on socialization for your dog... I've been there in the past. Use social media to ask about dog groups in your area, talk to ppl who have dogs & explain your situation, until you find someone who will work with you, go into the small business high quality pet food stores that have a passion for these dogs... Think of anyone & everyone you can to ask... Local rescue groups even.
James’ suggestions are excellent. Took my DA pit rescue to OUTSIDE the dog park ,., up to 150’ away to gradually de-sensitize. Eventually thru the fence then 1 on 1 outside the park. Patience!
Hi! I am from Spain. I have a fearful 1 year old Doberman female. I've gone to many trainers here, have helped a little bit but since I have found your channel my relationship with her has changed so much. I still can't see and stop all the wrong things she does when playing or meeting other dogs on a leash but I keep on watching all your videos and have hope that I will someday be able to correct everything at the right time and establish myself as the leader, which I think now doesn't always happen. Thank you so much for your work, you are by far the best trainer I've seen and listened to.
This dog looks & acts EXACTLY like one of mine. I have 2 6mth sisters and they run around the yard chasing each other all the time. We walk every day. We play with them to try and tire them out, but still so much energy. Thanks for the advice!

I have a dog that looks and behaves a lot like Astra as well. She is fearful/anxious of new dogs , especially larger ones. She likes to be chased and has loads of energy. I am also trying to desensitize her and remain the boss. Work but worth it.

Thank you Joel! I needed this video. My Shepherd mix rescue dog definitely needs to meet other dogs. She used to be severely dog reactive, and it took a long while for us to work through that. She’s finally doing well on walks with other dogs that aren’t reactive to her, but she’s only had the opportunity to meet and play with a couple of other dogs. This video gives me the courage to move forward. Now, the issue is finding those calm spirits she can start with.
Labs and retrievers are the best for that, especially mature ones. Ask owners you see on walks for an organized session. You can also go to dog parks alone to spot well-mannered dogs there.
My 6 year old Shiba who we got 6 months ago has a hard time socializing with bigger dogs and dogs that are the same size that come and approach to say hi. He has gotten better since following your videos and what you said about making friends with calmer older dogs I am working on. However, my Shiba Inu is a little unique…

I have a similar story as these dog owners. My one and a half year old GSP has “gone after” (no blood) a few dogs, showing snarling/pinning behaviors. I’m not experienced enough in dog body language to know why or what exactly triggers this. I’m not sure what to do though, I certainly don’t want him getting in or starting fights so we just don’t go to the dog park. We do meet up with dogs that we know though. For example: I let Hatch out of the car recently as we had arrived to a friends with a chocolate lab. The lab immediately came up to Hatch. Hatch growled a sort of turned into the lab for just a second or two and then they ran off to play.
This is my dog to a T. We take her to friends houses who have dogs and she cowers in a room away from them. At a dog beach she's totally fine - she ignores them and keeps her focus on me. This fear probably comes from when she was 4 months old. We were on a walk and a great pyramese got out of its yard and grabbed her by the neck. I shot at the ground which got the dog to let go. My energy is not nervous around her meeting other dogs so I think she remembers that event.
I've got a one year old who is nervous and has tons of energy. Best thing I can do for her is take her for runs every single morning. The longer we run, the more chill she is, the better she is on leash, the better she is meeting dogs. If you're not a runner, try getting your dog to run alongside you on a bicycle.
Fantastic video. My frenchie pulls towards dogs or runs at them whilst loose and frightens dog owners 😢 but it’s not easy to find a calm dog whose owner would take the risk of letting Daisy play with them. Thank you Joel ❤❤
I watched and listened closely to this session. Astra's behavior reminds me of my 2 yr old dog-aggressive dog... maybe if unguided this provocative energy attracts attacks and can mature into dog-aggression. Might Astra be the kind of dog who would benefit from joining agility training/competition, to drain the energy and give her a job. Thanks for the education.

I'm obsessed with your sessions. Not too many focussing on nervous dog tendencies. I know my dog isn't great with other dogs so I specifically go to fields where leashes are mandatory and its disheartening to see dog owners have taken over that open area as an off-leash park and now my dog can't stretch his legs

My 4 year old Cattle dog fixates on cats he’s not aggressive he just stares and then he starts herding them and does circles around them like a typical herding breed. Any advice?
Unfortunately in my situation I don't have any friends or family with well trained or friendly dogs. So my almost year old shepherd mix who is very reactive to strange dogs (we own other dogs that he gets along with just fine) doesn't have a reliable method of learning how to get over it. We did doggie daycare when he was a puppy and he did well enough but then with the whole 'return to work' thing everyone flooded the daycares and we couldn't get him in for months while he simultaneously hit that puberty stage and decided strangers are scary. So are garbage bags apparently.
The advice at the end about exercising them before a walk or going to the park, man I really need to do that for my pup. She is so hard to go on walks she's over stimulated and over excited about everything and she goes kinda crazy with other dogs. I can't tell if she's reactive or just full of energy. I think she really just wants to play. She's also undersocialized because of covid 🥺 but im kind of afraid to take her around other dogs because she's so hyper and I'm not sure if she's aggressive or wanting to play.
the behavior only gets worse with the dog's age: I'm guessing my rescue dog started out fearful and hyper: now she's downright dog aggressive. I imagine thee were some bad interactions. I envy those with younger dogs: the time is now! I wonder if your dog would benefit from joining agility training or some such--such a challenge both physically and mentally.

I'd get leash control (watching you for leadership) down first, before taking her around other dogs. She has to have the self-control to hold a sit-stay next to you with lots of diatractions. Once she knows you're totally in charge, she'll be more confident & much less likely to feel a need to 'protect' (or resource-guard!) you from other dogs. Stay at the outside of dog beach or play area until she pays attention to you on-leash no matter who is doing what. That will also give you the opportunity to see what the other dogs are like before your dog interacts with them. If they're hyperactive, I'd pick another day. Enjoy!
I have a dog like Astra, who is 18 months now. She is a bit more sure of herself, but she is just as high energy and does not let up on other dogs. With other young dogs that's okay(ish), but some other dogs can react pretty sharply. I would like an older dog to teach her some manners!

A tired dog is a good dog. First piece of advice any dog owner should hear. Ideally before getting a dog, best to match the specific breeds energy level with something conducive to your lifestyle. Too many people get high energy working breeds, and have a lethargic or busy lifestyle. Then wonder why the dog is acting out.

Good session. What happens when the tails are not wagging and their is no play bow but territorial and protective aggression? That's what i confront in dog interactions, not the strong potential for good meeting and socialization. Maybe there are other video sessions with those circumstances? Thanks
I believe that my dog is like her. Today, I didn’t feed her lunch on time. Then she started biting me cuz she was hungry. Is a three times a day raw dog food at the store a good diet for her?
This "energy" is actually adrenaline from the stress of meeting new dogs. If you pushed it further, to get her more tired, her behavior would get worse instead of better. And it'd bet money you'd see her get vocal then nippy. Thats because its stress/nerves, not "pent up energy". My dog is 100% exactly the same way with other dogs. And she has met/interacted with more dogs than I can count. Not undersocialized like some may think. We've had the exact same issues at the dogpark and when meeting friends dogs.when she is around a dog she knows well, she can relax after the initial greeting and does NOT act like this

Hi Beckman I love your training videos, I am having some issues with my Siberian husky his name is chief he is around 10 weeks old he has developed food aggression I have tried different things with him so far they seem to be working but not enough this morning he nearly bit my dad I’m really sure what to do? What’s the best way to dominate him and overcome his food territorial issuers?
Don't dominate him, that can make it worse. Put the bowl down and have him wait and make eye-contact before he's allowed to eat. Give him half a bowl of food, and while he's eating you drop extra (and nicer) stuff in there. Put the food that you're adding into a cup, and rattle it to get his attention. If you're adding something that doesn't rattle, you can rattle with some kibble that you don't plan on adding. With bones it pays off to keep holding onto it while they're chewing on the other end. Manage his energy levels. Dogs get aggressive when they're completely focused on the food/item and they perceive someone coming in to steal. If you divide their focus between you and the bone, it becomes a shared activity. When you give him a treat you don't allow him to nip your hand or finger with it. Similarly, you don't allow him to grab and run off with the bone. Just tell him no, uh-uh, easy, whatever you're using, and let him nibble on the other end while you're holding it. Tell him that he's nice when he is. Reassure them that when you come near their bowl, it's okay. Also teach him the "leave it" command. You don't have to use it around his meals, but it's a great exercise to teach him that ignoring food pays off, and that can carry over to his resource guarding.

Absolutely don't give her treats to try to lure her to walk again, she'll learn that if she stops she'll get a treat and begin to stop more and more, if the dog likes being carried the same applies to that. If you want to give treats, you should give them when she walks nicely, also try to be more energetic or interesting so she doesn't get bored. When my dog stops I've just pulled lightly trying to get him to come, now he never really stops unless something is wrong, Are you sure she isn't afraid of something, or uncomfortable i.e. because it's too hot outside or paws hurting? Otherwise it's probably just a bad habbit.
What happens when my dog just constantly bark at any dogs or humans. I don’t know what to do. I pick them up and try to calm them but it doesn’t work. I’m starting the loose leash home training and recall method. Would this help with the walking aggressive barking issue?

See I watch this and know I need other dogs it’s just so difficult to find other dogs. So I decided to bring her to a training center so she can get this with trainers that understand.
I'm pretty sure they're located in San Diego (too far for me, sadly) but they also do video meetings if you're not able to come to the facility in person.
There is almost always a trigger to set off the aggression. (I say almost because there's always a chance it could be a medical issue needing addressing). Chances are that you aren't seeing the trigger or recognizing what you're seeing as a trigger. I'm still learning a few of my newer dog's triggers so I know it's not always something that smacks you in the face obvious 😔 For me, I NEVER leave any of my dogs together unsupervised. Even being home with them 99.8% of the time, I still juggle which dogs can be with which dogs and in what settings. I hope for your sake (and your lil one's sake) that you are able to determine the issue and work through them quickly!
My dog goes to lake and runs for 30 minutes each morning. A walk for training each day. She has her basics down. But put her around people or strange dogs and she runs away till she can get close enough than she nips or bits. Can not get her over it. All my friends no longer want their dogs around her. My other dogs are leery of her. Help.
What is "walking a ton". I take my dog for 4 walks a day all of which are close to a mile and I don't mind it but how much do these high energy dogs need?
I can't speak for all but, my gsd mix got between 15-20 km a day as a puppy (under 2, starting at 4 months, 2-4 months old he got less), now as an adult (over 2) gets between 12-15km a day. We average 5km a walk and do three walks a day. The funny thing is, I don't even consider him high energy because most days I wish he'd be up for more...but I know most people probably wouldn't be up for that much walking :)
My Malinois mutt used to run (not walk; run) several hours per day. 10-15 km bicycle rides, playing fetch for hours, hiking, swimming, etc etc. It didn't matter how much I made her run throughout the day, late in the evening she was ready to run some more. (though I may have allowed her to push herself too far at times) As a rule of thumb I'd say 2 hours of exercise per day is the minimum for medium to large breeds.
I have a GSD and anytime I have to correct her she lays down and pees. When I give her love she pees. It’s getting insane! Any idea why or how to fix this problem?
Boost her confidence, is my guess. I would correct her softly, without eye contact, like Mr. Beckman does when teaching loose leash walking. Let her win at tug-o-war. Set things up so that you send her to Seek for something (like a glove or one of your shoes) so she can find them & have a food reward next to it. Ignore her completely when you come home until she sits on her own, then verbal praise (no petting, keep your body sideways & wiggly, make only soft eye contact) & as soon as she goes to lay down to grovel, walk away & call her over. Pet her under the chin & stroke side of body, not top. Let her release pent up stress by jogging next to you/biking/chasing balls, etc. Run around the yard & encourage her to chase you while you're holding a soft sqeaky toy. When she touches you, you're 'caught', so stand there for a few seconds, let her grab the toy & keep it, then pull another toy out of your pocket & dash the other way until she tags you again. Do a lot of just sitting with her in the yard down at her level & let her nap with/cuddle with you every day. She'll outgrow the submissive peeing when she matures, I believe. You can use a female dog "undergarment" every time you bring her into the house... so you don't have to get upset at her for soiling in the house & giving you tons of cleanup work. That gets to be a royal PITA, not to mention it makes the house stink ...& it's human to become resentful. Enjoy your dog! Good luck!
Wow, THANKS for all those tips. I have the same issue with my 2 year old Dobie. It has gotten better. Occasionally squirts. Haha. Calmness and ignoring seem to be the key for me. People always ask to pet him. I warn them, watch out for your shoes they may get peed on. Some say don't let anyone pet him. But how will he ever become accepting of strangers. I want him to be a nice friendly Dobie,. LIKE PRINCE. Without the peeing. 😂

More exposure to the stimuli will desensitize them. Also make sure to build focus in the dog to reel in their excitement. Sits, stays, etc. Once you form some structure around the interaction, it gets easier for them to chill out
@@aaronalexander826 thanks. I’ve been striving to desensitize him for months. Doesn’t seem to make a difference. The only time it doesn’t happen is when he’s recently gone out to urinate first (coincidence). I was hoping for another idea.
@@shanescott1207 it's not something you can expect to fix overnight. There's things my dog does that have taken several weeks to establish a good precedent. Mainly due to things I was doing to compound the issue. I would look at what you're doing before thinking it's the dog not getting it.
@@aaronalexander826 wise advice, and ultimately the hardest pill to swallow: we, the human, may be contributing to the problem even (and especially) if we don't realize it.
Usually this happens at the start of meeting people (again). Ask the people to ignore him at first. When he's calmed down, they can acknowledge his existence, but not stimulate him too much with treats or petting. How much exercise is he getting and what kind of breed is he? He won't get too excited if he's too tired.
My dog (45 lbs and 6 months) plays ROUGH and has a group of playmates that enjoy this play as they will keep on for easily 45 minutes up to 90 minutes. Bigger dogs and smaller dogs are fine with her. Only one dog she tried to walk away from. Is play where dogs bite faces, drag the other around by the scruff of the neck and bite ankles OK? Often more wrestling and biting than running. Can this kind of "play" start off as play but morph into aggression. I can't find videos with guidelines on Rough play.... the videos on rough play I have seen look tame to me.
In my world of colossal WTF of beastly canines, there are only two that can play like that together and I don't worry about. I do have to make sure that those 2 do NOT have any opportunity to try such play with any of my others though because there would be hell & a hefty vet bill to pay! Anyway, you have to know the dogs in question and recognize their signs of aggression vs rough play. Another factor to consider is how obedient your dog is. If your dog is around other dogs, other than the rough playing buddies, you don't want him/her initiating such rough play with dogs you both are unfamiliar with because that will almost certainly end badly. Personally, I don't approve of dog parks because I feel they are a vet bill in the making, whether due to disease or ill-mannered dogs belonging to ignorant people that have no business bringing their dogs to such places...either way, I won't do it. I don't know your opinion on that but I bring it because if you do or plan on or want to partake in such activities, this could turn dangerous rather quickly. On the other hand, if you have adequately socialized your dog so that meeting other dogs in public isn't a problem but you plan on skipping activities like the dog park, the rough play (always supervised) with a select known few, is a great way for your dog to work out that puppy energy! Obviously if you were to begin noticing signs of aggression with people or other animals, you would probably want to eliminate those play dates and consider another activity to wear your pup out. Perhaps agility training or even a flirt pole?

Astra is doing great. We did a board and train with Joel, and then got another male dog, her size, for her to continue playing with. We take her to parks off leash because she responds well to "come." I hike with her. She meets other dogs just fine now. Shes going to be 2 in August. She a great dog. no complaints. Shes skiddish with children, but not too bad. We are very happy!
Hi, one question if you may help me please? I am a dog walker and have one client with a German Shepherd. When I've met the dog a few times he is obviously protective of his owners and their home. He seamed friendly, I did not allow him to jump on me and I pet him during good behavior. I went to their home one day with the owners not there and a good 5 minutes after entering the GS would not stop viciously barking. When contacting the owner she told me to just give him deli meat to calm him. He continued to demand it and would not sit or stay for me whatsoever. I am not a fan of rewarding not good behavior and am a crossroads of what to do the next go around. Can you suggest any tricks or ways to enter the home without startling him and him waiting at the door to jump possibly attack me? Thank you.
If your dog is like this.. try getting them tired out, then head to a dog park. It helps calm them. Their pee & zoomies for the most part have been worked out 👍
My puppy (6 mo old) doesn't like her leash so she hates walks but then has extra energy-any ideas??? She will be big so I'm trying to teach her not to pull.
When attempting to walk her on a leash, are you using just a collar or do you use a harness? One of my dogs (he'll be 8 in Aug & I've had him since birth so I have no question about history) is TERRIFIED if I try to walk him on leash by way of a collar. He's still not overjoyed when using a harness but that glued to my leg, frozen like a statue terror is gone.
Destiny Morgan I have a leash that is sort of like a gentle leader-she pulls when using a collar-tried a choke chain...still pulled-we've also been accosted 6 times by other dogs so maybe she's scared/or hates walking bc of that???
@@pattylaird930 That is very likely. 6 times is an awful lot in... 2 months? I'm basing that off the fact that he feet shouldn't have touched public grounds until about a week after fully vaccinated (Rabies given at 4 months). Anyway, where are you walking her that all these dogs have scared her so? Have you heard of a flirt pole? That is one way to tire her out. Have you taught her to play fetch yet? There are a number of interactive games you can play that will provide both the mental & physical stimulation she needs. Since pulling is a problem, I would get a good fitting harness to start. Collars, no matter which type, can harm a dog that pulls by pressure where it sits at the neck. Start by getting a solid foundation of basic commands. You can also teach her to sit whenever you stop walking. That can be in combination with the basic command to heel. Seeing that she is so young, training her with hand signals (instead of verbally) would help too because while walking, she will be constantly looking up at you for cues. There are examples of everything I've mentioned on TH-cam so you can actually see what & how behind it all.

Stupid? Greedy! I have used my dog hundred of times as Joël likes to use Prince etc. But I never let her bring common sense to a big idiotic 'with no rules and boundaries' dog at least the owner has to have somewhat input and control. I don't fear any dog. I will use the right tools to bring common sense into any dog. And yes it will make or brake the lunatic. But I will not allow none foreign dog brake a good dog. CLEAR!

It is difficult to find people to work with on socialization for your dog... I've been there in the past.
Use social media to ask about dog groups in your area, talk to ppl who have dogs & explain your situation, until you find someone who will work with you, go into the small business high quality pet food stores that have a passion for these dogs... Think of anyone & everyone you can to ask... Local rescue groups even.

Took my DA pit rescue to OUTSIDE the dog park ,., up to 150’ away to gradually de-sensitize. Eventually thru the fence then 1 on 1 outside the park. Patience!

I've gone to many trainers here, have helped a little bit but since I have found your channel my relationship with her has changed so much. I still can't see and stop all the wrong things she does when playing or meeting other dogs on a leash but I keep on watching all your videos and have hope that I will someday be able to correct everything at the right time and establish myself as the leader, which I think now doesn't always happen. This dog looks & acts EXACTLY like one of mine. I have 2 6mth sisters and they run around the yard chasing each other all the time. We walk every day. We play with them to try and tire them out, but still so much energy. Thanks for the advice!

I have a dog that looks and behaves a lot like Astra as well. She is fearful/anxious of new dogs , especially larger ones. She likes to be chased and has loads of energy. I am also trying to desensitize her and remain the boss. Work but worth it.

Thank you Joel! I needed this video. My Shepherd mix rescue dog definitely needs to meet other dogs.
She used to be severely dog reactive, and it took a long while for us to work through that. She’s finally doing well on walks with other dogs that aren’t reactive to her, but she’s only had the opportunity to meet and play with a couple of other dogs.
This video gives me the courage to move forward. Now, the issue is finding those calm spirits she can start with.
Labs and retrievers are the best for that, especially mature ones. Ask owners you see on walks for an organized session. You can also go to dog parks alone to spot well-mannered dogs there.

I have a similar story as these dog owners. My one and a half year old GSP has “gone after” (no blood) a few dogs, showing snarling/pinning behaviors. I’m not experienced enough in dog body language to know why or what exactly triggers this. I’m not sure what to do though, I certainly don’t want him getting in or starting fights so we just don’t go to the dog park. We do meet up with dogs that we know though. For example: I let Hatch out of the car recently as we had arrived to a friends with a chocolate lab. The lab immediately came up to Hatch. Hatch growled a sort of turned into the lab for just a second or two and then they ran off to play.
This is my dog to a T. We take her to friends houses who have dogs and she cowers in a room away from them.
At a dog beach she's totally fine - she ignores them and keeps her focus on me.
This fear probably comes from when she was 4 months old. We were on a walk and a great pyramese got out of its yard and grabbed her by the neck. I shot at the ground which got the dog to let go.
My energy is not nervous around her meeting other dogs so I think she remembers that event.
I've got a one year old who is nervous and has tons of energy. Best thing I can do for her is take her for runs every single morning. The longer we run, the more chill she is, the better she is on leash, the better she is meeting dogs. If you're not a runner, try getting your dog to run alongside you on a bicycle.

I watched and listened closely to this session. Astra's behavior reminds me of my 2 yr old dog-aggressive dog... maybe if unguided this provocative energy attracts attacks and can mature into dog-aggression. Might Astra be the kind of dog who would benefit from joining agility training/competition, to drain the energy and give her a job. Thanks for the education.
No, the surroundings in a agility place are very wild, look at al the woundup dogs, yelling, panting, barking showing ultra bad behaviours.

I'm obsessed with your sessions. Not too many focussing on nervous dog tendencies. I know my dog isn't great with other dogs so I specifically go to fields where leashes are mandatory and its disheartening to see dog owners have taken over that open area as an off-leash park and now my dog can't stretch his legs

Unfortunately in my situation I don't have any friends or family with well trained or friendly dogs. So my almost year old shepherd mix who is very reactive to strange dogs (we own other dogs that he gets along with just fine) doesn't have a reliable method of learning how to get over it. We did doggie daycare when he was a puppy and he did well enough but then with the whole 'return to work' thing everyone flooded the daycares and we couldn't get him in for months while he simultaneously hit that puberty stage and decided strangers are scary. So are garbage bags apparently.
The advice at the end about exercising them before a walk or going to the park, man I really need to do that for my pup. She is so hard to go on walks she's over stimulated and over excited about everything and she goes kinda crazy with other dogs. I can't tell if she's reactive or just full of energy. I think she really just wants to play. She's also undersocialized because of covid 🥺 but im kind of afraid to take her around other dogs because she's so hyper and I'm not sure if she's aggressive or wanting to play.
the behavior only gets worse with the dog's age: I'm guessing my rescue dog started out fearful and hyper: now she's downright dog aggressive. I imagine thee were some bad interactions. I envy those with younger dogs: the time is now! I wonder if your dog would benefit from joining agility training or some such--such a challenge both physically and mentally.

I'd get leash control (watching you for leadership) down first, before taking her around other dogs. She has to have the self-control to hold a sit-stay next to you with lots of diatractions. Once she knows you're totally in charge, she'll be more confident & much less likely to feel a need to 'protect' (or resource-guard!) you from other dogs. Stay at the outside of dog beach or play area until she pays attention to you on-leash no matter who is doing what. That will also give you the opportunity to see what the other dogs are like before your dog interacts with them. If they're hyperactive, I'd pick another day. Enjoy!

I have a dog like Astra, who is 18 months now. She is a bit more sure of herself, but she is just as high energy and does not let up on other dogs. With other young dogs that's okay(ish), but some other dogs can react pretty sharply. I would like an older dog to teach her some manners!

A tired dog is a good dog. First piece of advice any dog owner should hear.
Ideally before getting a dog, best to match the specific breeds energy level with something conducive to your lifestyle. Too many people get high energy working breeds, and have a lethargic or busy lifestyle. Then wonder why the dog is acting out.

Good session. What happens when the tails are not wagging and their is no play bow but territorial and protective aggression? That's what i confront in dog interactions, not the strong potential for good meeting and socialization. Maybe there are other video sessions with those circumstances?

This "energy" is actually adrenaline from the stress of meeting new dogs. If you pushed it further, to get her more tired, her behavior would get worse instead of better. And it'd bet money you'd see her get vocal then nippy. Thats because its stress/nerves, not "pent up energy". My dog is 100% exactly the same way with other dogs. And she has met/interacted with more dogs than I can count. Not undersocialized like some may think. We've had the exact same issues at the dogpark and when meeting friends dogs.when she is around a dog she knows well, she can relax after the initial greeting and does NOT act like this

Hi Beckman I love your training videos, I am having some issues with my Siberian husky his name is chief he is around 10 weeks old he has developed food aggression I have tried different things with him so far they seem to be working but not enough this morning he nearly bit my dad I’m really sure what to do? What’s the best way to dominate him and overcome his food territorial issuers?
Don't dominate him, that can make it worse. Put the bowl down and have him wait and make eye-contact before he's allowed to eat. Give him half a bowl of food, and while he's eating you drop extra (and nicer) stuff in there. Put the food that you're adding into a cup, and rattle it to get his attention. If you're adding something that doesn't rattle, you can rattle with some kibble that you don't plan on adding.
With bones it pays off to keep holding onto it while they're chewing on the other end. Manage his energy levels. Dogs get aggressive when they're completely focused on the food/item and they perceive someone coming in to steal. If you divide their focus between you and the bone, it becomes a shared activity. When you give him a treat you don't allow him to nip your hand or finger with it. Similarly, you don't allow him to grab and run off with the bone. Just tell him no, uh-uh, easy, whatever you're using, and let him nibble on the other end while you're holding it.
Tell him that he's nice when he is. Reassure them that when you come near their bowl, it's okay.
Also teach him the "leave it" command. You don't have to use it around his meals, but it's a great exercise to teach him that ignoring food pays off, and that can carry over to his resource guarding.

I have a border collie that use to be super social, and confident and after I sent him to a dog hotel he came back being completely different,now he doesn't want to go out the house,he is extremely afraid of everything and I don't know why . I really need your input. We have a 4 yr old rescue Yorkie. When we go on a walk, she will stop and will not move. I’ve tried treats, a quick correction like you show us but nothing works short of me carrying her. Help! Thank you!
Absolutely don't give her treats to try to lure her to walk again, she'll learn that if she stops she'll get a treat and begin to stop more and more, if the dog likes being carried the same applies to that. If you want to give treats, you should give them when she walks nicely, also try to be more energetic or interesting so she doesn't get bored. When my dog stops I've just pulled lightly trying to get him to come, now he never really stops unless something is wrong, Are you sure she isn't afraid of something, or uncomfortable i.e. because it's too hot outside or paws hurting? Otherwise it's probably just a bad habbit.

I'm pretty sure they're located in San Diego (too far for me, sadly) but they also do video meetings if you're not able to come to the facility in person.
I think they are actually in Ramona, CA. For me they are like an hour and a half (I think) from me (in ontario)
There is almost always a trigger to set off the aggression. (I say almost because there's always a chance it could be a medical issue needing addressing).
Chances are that you aren't seeing the trigger or recognizing what you're seeing as a trigger. I'm still learning a few of my newer dog's triggers so I know it's not always something that smacks you in the face obvious 😔
For me, I NEVER leave any of my dogs together unsupervised. Even being home with them 99.8% of the time, I still juggle which dogs can be with which dogs and in what settings.
I hope for your sake (and your lil one's sake) that you are able to determine the issue and work through them quickly!
My dog goes to lake and runs for 30 minutes each morning. A walk for training each day. She has her basics down. But put her around people or strange dogs and she runs away till she can get close enough than she nips or bits. Can not get her over it. All my friends no longer want their dogs around her. My other dogs are leery of her. Help.
What is "walking a ton". I take my dog for 4 walks a day all of which are close to a mile and I don't mind it but how much do these high energy dogs need?
I can't speak for all but, my gsd mix got between 15-20 km a day as a puppy (under 2, starting at 4 months, 2-4 months old he got less), now as an adult (over 2) gets between 12-15km a day. We average 5km a walk and do three walks a day.
The funny thing is, I don't even consider him high energy because most days I wish he'd be up for more...but I know most people probably wouldn't be up for that much walking :)
My Malinois mutt used to run (not walk; run) several hours per day. 10-15 km bicycle rides, playing fetch for hours, hiking, swimming, etc etc. It didn't matter how much I made her run throughout the day, late in the evening she was ready to run some more. (though I may have allowed her to push herself too far at times)
As a rule of thumb I'd say 2 hours of exercise per day is the minimum for medium to large breeds.
My dog loves other dogs, come alive when in the presence of other dogs, but is terrified of everything else.
I have a GSD and anytime I have to correct her she lays down and pees. When I give her love she pees. It’s getting insane! Any idea why or how to fix this problem?
Boost her confidence, is my guess. I would correct her softly, without eye contact, like Mr. Beckman does when teaching loose leash walking.
Let her win at tug-o-war. Set things up so that you send her to Seek for something (like a glove or one of your shoes) so she can find them & have a food reward next to it.
Ignore her completely when you come home until she sits on her own, then verbal praise (no petting, keep your body sideways & wiggly, make only soft eye contact) & as soon as she goes to lay down to grovel, walk away & call her over. Pet her under the chin & stroke side of body, not top. Let her release pent up stress by jogging next to you/biking/chasing balls, etc. Run around the yard & encourage her to chase you while you're holding a soft sqeaky toy. When she touches you, you're 'caught', so stand there for a few seconds, let her grab the toy & keep it, then pull another toy out of your pocket & dash the other way until she tags you again.
Do a lot of just sitting with her in the yard down at her level & let her nap with/cuddle with you every day. She'll outgrow the submissive peeing when she matures, I believe. You can use a female dog "undergarment" every time you bring her into the house... so you don't have to get upset at her for soiling in the house & giving you tons of cleanup work. That gets to be a royal PITA, not to mention it makes the house stink ...& it's human to become resentful. Enjoy your dog! Good luck!
Wow, THANKS for all those tips. I have the same issue with my 2 year old Dobie. It has gotten better. Occasionally squirts. Haha. Calmness and ignoring seem to be the key for me. People always ask to pet him. I warn them, watch out for your shoes they may get peed on. Some say don't let anyone pet him. But how will he ever become accepting of strangers. I want him to be a nice friendly Dobie,. LIKE PRINCE. Without the peeing. 😂

More exposure to the stimuli will desensitize them. Also make sure to build focus in the dog to reel in their excitement. Sits, stays, etc. Once you form some structure around the interaction, it gets easier for them to chill out
@@aaronalexander826 thanks. I’ve been striving to desensitize him for months. Doesn’t seem to make a difference. The only time it doesn’t happen is when he’s recently gone out to urinate first (coincidence). I was hoping for another idea.
@@shanescott1207 it's not something you can expect to fix overnight. There's things my dog does that have taken several weeks to establish a good precedent. Mainly due to things I was doing to compound the issue. I would look at what you're doing before thinking it's the dog not getting it.
@@aaronalexander826 wise advice, and ultimately the hardest pill to swallow: we, the human, may be contributing to the problem even (and especially) if we don't realize it.
Usually this happens at the start of meeting people (again). Ask the people to ignore him at first. When he's calmed down, they can acknowledge his existence, but not stimulate him too much with treats or petting.
How much exercise is he getting and what kind of breed is he? He won't get too excited if he's too tired.
The owners need to get a treadmill to get some of that energy off.
My dogs love to swim. I tried the treadmill they hated it.
My dog (45 lbs and 6 months) plays ROUGH and has a group of playmates that enjoy this play as they will keep on for easily 45 minutes up to 90 minutes. Bigger dogs and smaller dogs are fine with her. Only one dog she tried to walk away from. Is play where dogs bite faces, drag the other around by the scruff of the neck and bite ankles OK? Often more wrestling and biting than running. Can this kind of "play" start off as play but morph into aggression. I can't find videos with guidelines on Rough play.... the videos on rough play I have seen look tame to me.
In my world of colossal WTF of beastly canines, there are only two that can play like that together and I don't worry about. I do have to make sure that those 2 do NOT have any opportunity to try such play with any of my others though because there would be hell & a hefty vet bill to pay!
Anyway, you have to know the dogs in question and recognize their signs of aggression vs rough play.
Another factor to consider is how obedient your dog is. If your dog is around other dogs, other than the rough playing buddies, you don't want him/her initiating such rough play with dogs you both are unfamiliar with because that will almost certainly end badly.
Personally, I don't approve of dog parks because I feel they are a vet bill in the making, whether due to disease or ill-mannered dogs belonging to ignorant people that have no business bringing their dogs to such places...either way, I won't do it.
I don't know your opinion on that but I bring it because if you do or plan on or want to partake in such activities, this could turn dangerous rather quickly.
On the other hand, if you have adequately socialized your dog so that meeting other dogs in public isn't a problem but you plan on skipping activities like the dog park, the rough play (always supervised) with a select known few, is a great way for your dog to work out that puppy energy!
Obviously if you were to begin noticing signs of aggression with people or other animals, you would probably want to eliminate those play dates and consider another activity to wear your pup out. Perhaps agility training or even a flirt pole?

Astra is doing great. We did a board and train with Joel, and then got another male dog, her size, for her to continue playing with. We take her to parks off leash because she responds well to "come." I hike with her. She meets other dogs just fine now. Shes going to be 2 in August. She a great dog. no complaints. Shes skiddish with children, but not too bad. We are very happy!

Hi, one question if you may help me please? I am a dog walker and have one client with a German Shepherd. When I've met the dog a few times he is obviously protective of his owners and their home. He seamed friendly, I did not allow him to jump on me and I pet him during good behavior. I went to their home one day with the owners not there and a good 5 minutes after entering the GS would not stop viciously barking. When contacting the owner she told me to just give him deli meat to calm him. He continued to demand it and would not sit or stay for me whatsoever. I am not a fan of rewarding not good behavior and am a crossroads of what to do the next go around. Can you suggest any tricks or ways to enter the home without startling him and him waiting at the door to jump possibly attack me? Thank you.
How do I stop my dog from chasing, snarling at, and rolling puppies and nervous dogs at the dog park? He is a lab mix. Have you done a video on this?

He's got several videos on loose leash walking. It's not different for beagles, just possibly more work because their hunting instincts are so strong.

If your dog is like this.. try getting them tired out, then head to a dog park. It helps calm them. Their pee & zoomies for the most part have been worked out 👍

My puppy (6 mo old) doesn't like her leash so she hates walks but then has extra energy-any ideas??? She will be big so I'm trying to teach her not to pull.
When attempting to walk her on a leash, are you using just a collar or do you use a harness? One of my dogs (he'll be 8 in Aug & I've had him since birth so I have no question about history) is TERRIFIED if I try to walk him on leash by way of a collar. He's still not overjoyed when using a harness but that glued to my leg, frozen like a statue terror is gone.
Destiny Morgan I have a leash that is sort of like a gentle leader-she pulls when using a collar-tried a choke chain...still pulled-we've also been accosted 6 times by other dogs so maybe she's scared/or hates walking bc of that???
@@pattylaird930 That is very likely. 6 times is an awful lot in... 2 months? I'm basing that off the fact that he feet shouldn't have touched public grounds until about a week after fully vaccinated (Rabies given at 4 months).
Anyway, where are you walking her that all these dogs have scared her so?
Have you heard of a flirt pole? That is one way to tire her out. Have you taught her to play fetch yet? There are a number of interactive games you can play that will provide both the mental & physical stimulation she needs.
Since pulling is a problem, I would get a good fitting harness to start. Collars, no matter which type, can harm a dog that pulls by pressure where it sits at the neck.
Start by getting a solid foundation of basic commands. You can also teach her to sit whenever you stop walking. That can be in combination with the basic command to heel.
Seeing that she is so young, training her with hand signals (instead of verbally) would help too because while walking, she will be constantly looking up at you for cues. There are examples of everything I've mentioned on TH-cam so you can actually see what & how behind it all.
Destiny Morgan thank you destiny, for this info-will check into a harness-yah my neighborhood has dogs w low fences and some have run through holes in fences and jumped over or broke through their fences...I actually bought some mace & I feel more confident walking...

Stupid? Greedy! I have used my dog hundred of times as Joël likes to use Prince etc. But I never let her bring common sense to a big idiotic 'with no rules and boundaries' dog at least the owner has to have somewhat input and control.
I don't fear any dog. I will use the right tools to bring common sense into any dog.
And yes it will make or brake the lunatic. But I will not allow none foreign dog brake a good dog. CLEAR!
