2006 Porsche 911 C4S Review - Worth it over my 997 C2?

  • Nowadays a clean 2006-2008 997.1 Carrera 4S will run you somewhere around $45-60K. That's roughly 10K more than an equivalent Carrera S, and almost 15K more than a base Carrera. What I'd like to know is - how does the AWD system affect the nine-eleven-y handling characteristic of the 997, and does the 3.8L really make that big a difference over the 3.6? Is the extra $15K really worth it?

    Glad you enjoyed the 4S. I purchased my 4S primarily for the wide body looks, bigger engine and better brakes. I was also very pleased and impressed with the additional handling in tight corners compared to my friends C2S which also had the power on understeer you mentioned coming out of corners in your car. As you said, you can not go wrong with either one. The brake feel you noticed in the 4S is because the 4S comes with the Turbo's brake controller system which pre-loads the brakes and brings the pads closer to the rotors the moment you release the gas pedal. So it makes for a much tighter bite and responsive brake feel. The Evoms intake, which is what I have also, makes for a really nice sound improvement from 5000-7000 rpm. there are a lot of flavors to chose from which makes it easier, for whatever phase of life you are in, to get the one that appeals to you most.

      Good to know about the 4S brake system. I figured it was just down to larger rotors and beefier calipers. Debating if I want to upgrade my base model brakes to the Stoptech 355mm BBK

      @@Zygrene When I would track my C4S, along with my friend who had a C2 base model, the C2 base model's brakes would over heat and boil the brake fluid. At minimum you need to use Motul 600 rbf brake fluid. New pads and bigger rotors will definitely make the brakes feel more responsive, but the big issue on track will be less overheating for sure with larger rotors. Brake pedal may not feel quite as responsive as C4S with Turbo brake controller, but larger rotors and pads will be a nice upgrade, especially for aggressive drivers who like to canyon run and track.

    I have a 997.1 4S and you can hit the Phasm button and then turn off the left switch which will let you have the throaty sound without the extreme tightness. I recommend this car to anyone.

    There are reasons turbo's have all wheel drive, improves handling with the higher power. Same with the 4S. It is not about snow and rain, it is about the handling. Although all wheel does come in handy during inclement weather. If you can, take both a rear wheel and a all wheel to the track. If you are new, do it on a HPDE day with instructor. Make your decision. And as mentioned, you can't go wrong with either. A Porsche is a lovely car.

      What would u recommend for someone who never really had much experience in driving a rwd or awd??
      One of my brothers is obsessed with rwd the way he talks about it makes me clearly know he never ever wanted anything other then rwd he complained a lot bout why he did like awd so much I kinda forget what the argument was he makes it sounds like rwd is super superior ultra fun and better in almost every way imaginable not for this specific car but in general he’s apparently a BMW M fanatic specifically rwd coupes … always made me feel like your not a real sport car person and or drive without a rwd coupe as ur daily 😆
      But yes please chime in on which would make a better buy especially for someone looking to probably trade out of it sooner than later for a bigger better newer car and loan def looking to getting into 06-09 for now tho

    I was in this same predicament. S vs 4s. I opt for the 2s simply because I didn’t want the extra weight and I love rear wheel drive configuration. The c4 felt felt a little heavy vs the c2 in the front end. This video is comparing a 3.6 vs 3.8 so it’s not exactly comparing apples to apples. Great video nonetheless 🙂

    Nice video. I currently have an '06 C2 with an 4.0 liter F6I that screams. I used to have an '02 C4 that was amazing around the corners and do believe they track better than the C2's but I think the C2's are a tad quicker. On a track I would have to agree that a C4s would beat a C2s

    I test drove a 997.1 base and 997.1S when I was shopping for a 911. I ended up going with the 997.1S, the larger 3.8L engine with a few extra HP did make a difference.

    • @gregspark9845
      @gregspark9845 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you drove them blind I doubt the 0.2sec difference to 100kph would be noticeable. Confirmation bias is strong when you know you're in the bigger engined car. The extra weight of the AWD hardware almost negates the power/torque advantage in the 4S.
