The series that saved Porsche! Guys we’ve had a real blast having explored the other main stays of the modern Porsche line up, but we have yet to touch on the cars that probably saved the brand: so today we explore the origins of the entry level line up of the sports car brand, while looking at the New 718 Cayman GTS! We’ll also check out the sound of the new 2020 GTS with the 6 cylinder 4.0 engine!
Now the original Entry level to Porsche was the 911. That was pretty much all porsche originally built in the early 90’s, alongside some other low volume highly priced cars like the transaxle 928. But when a worldwide financial slump hit, Porsche surely felt the effect of this being on the verge of doom in 1992.
Entered new CEO Wendelin Wiedeking! Rather than bank on the low volume 989 4 door car, Wiedeking said that the sub 40k sports car segment was 6 times larger the the 911 and would provide Stability to porsche in difficult times by doubling production numbers.
And what he imagined was the Porsche Boxster concept. Part sharing with the 911 996, it was “the first Porsche developed with a priority on efficient assembly”: but what they really mean is low cost and high profit! Porsche’s production numbers swelled to triple making it the highest selling porsche ever, And so the successful new series grew in both variations and then project 987c: aka the Cayman Coupé!!
Today we have the “New” 718, the latest iteration of the entry level Porsche. Renamed to 718, as It’s lost two cylinders, going from a naturally aspirated flat-6 engine to a turbocharged 2.5 flat-4 engine. Shock and horror at it’s introduction, all versions featured the 4 cyl unless it was GT product
Including this first GTS with only 16BHP more than the Cayman S and the same 0-60 and performance figures all around...
But luckily for us petrolheads and Porsche fans, in an unprecedented twist of fortune Porsche have JUST announced that the 2020 718 GTS will now get the 4.0 6 Cylinder as found in the GT4!! Albeit detuned, the new engine is 395 BHP meaning a significant 50BHP bump over the S. The 0-60 is very close to the GT4 cars and the engine revs to 7800 rpm now.
But today we will explore everything that’s led to this moment and beyond, while we look at the full history of the Boxster and Cayman!

1st gen 718 crying now
Ngai Jonathan - EU Regulators made them do it! 😬 The T4 is surprisingly torquey with great fuel economy when you keep your foot out of the turbo. I think they are a lot of fun to drive. Incredible handling and that torque effortlessly pushes you out of corners, making for a great driving experience. I know it doesn’t make the purists happy, but it’s still a fine piece of engineering.

If you dislike the sound of this car based on having driven a 718 then fine. I drove a 987 for 10 years with Fabspeed exhaust with bypass valve and the sound was amazing. When I decided to replace it I tried several 718s from base to GTS and found the sound to be not an issue. It doesn't sound in person like it sounds in these (not just this one) videos. Its totally different than the 6 but absolutely great especially at high rpm. Waiting now for my Cayman T. This was an excellent video and a fair review of the car.
Howard Schaefer agreed the sound is different and the difference is like comparing great and really great. You know these 718s are just brilliant to drive. My garage consists of 718 Boxster GTS pdk and 987.1 Cayman S manual AWE exhaust pasm pccb. Some days I want to row gears and rumble loud and some days I want to perform quietly. They’re all great days anyway you slice it. Congrats on your Cayman T
Its amazing how people go on about sound without any experience of the car, or limited experience. Like you, i found that in the flesh the engine sounds pretty good. A friend of mine put something like 20,000 miles on his 718 and it sounded raucous; sure it wont ever sound like a 6-pot but it has a character and aggressiveness of its own. The press cars often haven't done enough miles to really bed in the exhaust I think. They definitely come alive with use. Enjoy your T.
I own a 718s as well and with the sports exhaust and in sports it sounds fantastic. And this is from someone who has previously owned a 981s. I know it’s not the same as the previous 6, but it’s fantastic nonetheless. I don’t get the hate it’s gets

BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REVIEW! the 718 Cayman GTS is an amazing car, so underestimated, its a traffic light killer, its rapid, quicker than the GT4 and new GTS 4.0 because of its low end torque and PDK transmission, lighter, more fuel efficient, the list can go on, such a stunning car as well with all modern technology, mid engine set up and perfect balance and weight distribution for fun but lots of feedback and great handling, and amazing quality etc, really impressed with this car, its amazing!
the new GTS 4.0 is only available in manual transmission at the moment. There is still no PDK option for it.

the problem with that GTS4.0 is that it won't be any quicker than the 4cyl GTS especially with the manual and the dealers are going to charge over well over sticker price and riddle them with useless options. you looking at 100k cayman .. meanwhile the unloved 4cyl GTS will drop to under 60k.. is the noise worth 40-50k?? it might be if you keep the car for 20-30 years but something to think about

I have owned 3 Porsches (all with manual transmissions) two 911’s and one Cayman S and honestly I prefer the Cayman. mid Engine and flat six making wonderful noises right behind your head

Wow just heard this news for the first time just now! Amazing news, 2 cylinder deactivation hopefully helps bridge the way forward without compromising sound! Hopefully because of this the 981 N/A cars will lose a drop more in value now and become even more affordable for those looking to buy their first porsche. A win win for everyone.

Vince agreed. I prefer the 718 styling but hard to live with a 4 cylinder so great to hear they’re bringing back the 6 but sadly only in two models. The 981’s seemed to hit a floor in depreciation because the new models were 4 cylinders it seemed. I’m a bit concerned with cylinder deactivation as other cars seem to have issues with that so I’ll have to wait and see if there’s any issues there.
@Malcolm R Monaghan I feel you there. Hard to say how the market will respond but just looking at past porsche trends normally the last of anything will hold up more against depreciation (aircooled cars, 997.2 rs, etc etc). Adding the new gts along with the gt4's might curb it a little but regardless i think the 718 will stand the test of time, were entering the electric era, i think all N/A cars are going to rise in the next 15-20 years. The most important thing is that you enjoy your car now till then, and if you never sell it you'll never lose any money :P

Fluterra that’s not entirely true. There are some pops/crackles on the gear shifts, but they’re very limited.
I actually prefer the deeper sound of this restricted engine - Plus inside the car you'll get induction from the sound symposer.

I hadn't heard the rumour about the next C63 being a 4 cylinder. Let's hope it's at least a six and maybe the C43 becomes a 4. Very informative video, pleasure to watch and learn a couple of things on the way. I had no idea Boxster was Boxer + roadster, I thought it was a result of some very heavy German pronunciaton of Boxer, silly me!

Boxster saved Porsche . I bought a 2008 Boxster S 6 cylinder with Tiptronic and loved it. Cobalt blue on blue. Blue roof.
Not a 911, but I did not want to pay x 2 for 20% more performance. Loved it for 5 years but attended and hated a few Porsche Club of America events. Hated the PCA Snobs.
My Boxster was brilliant, only defect was the instrument pannel and changed under warranty, Other than that a perfect reliable car (though less than 30 K miles)
Love Porsche but not a $$$ rich guy so sold that 6 cylinder car . regret that to that day.

The boxster saved Porsche. The cayman was (later) icing on the cake.
That sound comparison was really unfair. Playing the 4 cylinder much more silent than the 6 cylinder 🙈 The 4 cylinder does sound quite good. Mechanical and aggressive. The 6 cylinder NA with the particular filter sounds better, but not great either.
Nice video review, Hope you upload your videos to 4K @ 60FPS, and add Closed Captions, which would be awesome way to enjoy your content, 4K@60FPS looks stunningly clear crisp smooth on my 3120X1440P resolution of my LG G7. And also try to review more old Mercedes-Benz models, like the rare S72 AMG W140, SL73 AMG R129, or the even more rare1994 W462 or W463 G36 AMG, which was long before the 2000s G55 AMG. As Mr AMG, I guess you know all these ultra-rare Mercedes beauties. ! Don't forgot, this is 2020, 4K HDR at 60 FPS would even be more insane, in HDR certified devices, LG G7 already one of the earliest HDR 10 bit display with that resolution back in 2018. MERCEDES-BENZ The Best Or Nothing.

The GTS 4.0 are great cars but they are almost as expensive as the GT4/Spyder. Which one should you pick?
$10,000 price difference, plus the GTS is easier to live with because the front isn't so low to the ground. Most people will be happier with a GTS imho.

Porsche claims that the Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS do 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 290km/h. However, they can do 0-60 in. 3.7 or 3.8 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 300km/h

Actually would argue my piped 718s sounds better th-cam.com/video/wULV3fT0tQc/w-d-xo.html. At a stage 2 tune pulling 450hp and 500nm it’s also faster. Having said that really like what Porsche is doing with this range generally. Although when l do eventually upgrade it will be 21-22 release when the range will get it long awaited digital interior upgrades.

It was the Cayenne that saved Porsche many years ago from potential bankruptcy. The only thing the Boxter/Cayman will save Porsche from is making too much money.

You have no idea about the love of driving unless you drive a sports car with a proper manual transmission.
Get a manual then talk to me.

Doug Maverick It's a PDK and ironically a better choice in this car; the manual gear ratios are too tall.
Fun fact, the 718 GTS 4.0 is faster in a straight line the 718 GT4, and traps higher in the 1/4 mile.
