I agree that it's stupid and there's no way that could possibly work, but I have a soft spot for it. It's a guilty pleasure for me to say the least.
In fairness, if you asked me if I wanted more movies like Equilibrium the answer would always be yes..

I actually liked equilibrium for what it was, but I really hated Ultraviolet
Fair enough, I thought Equilibrium was okay, I can understand people loving it or disliking it. But Ultraviolet, I tried watching it for about 10 minutes and gave up.
If it helps, the tears turned the kid into a vampire, thus the human antigen inside him could no longer kill him.
How did this movie even get to the Big Screen? Looks it it was thrown together in a month. Never saw it in theaters and I'm glad I didn't waste my money.

Not straight to DVD, but very specifically straight to Blu-ray. Sony poured a ton of money into this movie and UltraViolet wasn’t supposed to be good, it was just supposed to look good and promote the new Blu-ray format. Even the name of the film is a reference to Blu-ray.
Here's my question. The combat scene where everyone's in white...where's the blood? Did 4kids take over the production?
I remember getting up and walking out of this movie about 15-20 minutes in.

You don't watch Ultraviolet for the plot, you watch it for Milla Jovovich looking sexy and badass while killing loads of bad guys.

I thought ultraviolet was a comic. That being as I never saw it before this review.
Pink Suicide No, it was created by Sony to be a Blu-ray launch title. The movie was basically multimillion dollar promotional material that was intended to be displayed in TV and electronic stores to show off how good Blu-ray players looked.

@@EnkarashaddamNot all the TVs, a few TVs would play standard DVDs with the color setting manually lowered to show off how amazing Blu-ray looked compared to DVDs. Best Buy still uses this type of tactic to help push the sales of hIgher priced HD 4K TVs.
Yeah me too. The comic book opening credits actually make a certain amount of sense, because the movie comes across as an adaptation of one.
I do believe they threw around the idea but it fizzled out

When I rented this from the library, I couldn't finish it due to it being hard on my eyes with the crazy filter and color palette.
Milla can be a decent actress when she wants to be. She was actually quite good in the RDJ movie Chaplin. It was just a cameo but still good.

this is another movie that would make a pretty deacent video game kinda like wolverine origins other than that its the generic super hero/villain/antihero action future movie
1:08 The opening comic book panels give a certain Buckaroo Banzai feel where, as Kyle Garren from Brows Held High put, it wants you to believe this single story exists as the only chapter of a cinematic universe, and wants you to believe that these other stories of Violet's continuing adventures in the intro exist. However, unlike Buckaroo Banzai, I could care less about the story of Ultraviolet continuing or looking for further issues of her adventures. Unless maybe checking the Ultraviolet anime series, but even that's unlikely.

part of the plot inconsistencies is because the movie was re-edited and was cut by 40 minutes, not including the 8 minutes added back to the unrated extended cut.

Visually, this feels like the exact same film as Aeon Flux which came out (a flopped) a year earlier. Not only that, but Wimmer went on to piss on two greats: Point Break and Total Recall with his shite writing. And I'll admit it, I actually thought the gun kata was a cool idea when I saw Equilibrium- the story was sooooooooo cliche, but the gun kata was pretty cool. Unfortunately, I guess Wimmer knew that.

This is one of the best terrible movies ever. For horror there's Birdemic,drama had The Room,LGBT movies had Ben and Arthur, musicals had Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and for action movies we got Ultraviolet.
Every time I've seen this movie, I've just found it on TV and watched from the middle where it happened to be playing. I've never finished watching it, and I suppose that's a good thing.

that intro is fucking awsome
With the main guy not wearing sunglasses, I get the feeling that in his head it was because he was so cool and badass he put up with the pain to make sure people didn't know he was a vampire. But he forgot to actually hint at that at any point during the film so it just ends up feeling more like he forgot about it. Though he could also just have forgotten what he wrote earlier as well, when a film is this bad all bets are off on whether its juvenile stupidity or just not paying attention to your own world.

Wow...it really looks like they took some early pre-viz for those city shots and decided it was good enough to use on its own. Given how bad it looks on a little TH-cam window, I can only imagine how godawful it must've looked on a theatrical screen.
Trust me, it was garbage. I made the mistake of seeing it in the cinema. It looked liked video graphics from the late 90's with a Vaseline smeared over the top.
Those three vampires were a reference to the three monkeys or whatever it's called, hear see speak no evil, hence them being shot in the ear eye and mouth respectively
yeah because it makes so much more sense now, reference or not its still ludicrous and terrible

I liked it, for what it was. I will say if you'd listened to her flashback a bit, she mentioned that the virus is in bodily fluids. Which unrealistically includes tears. Her "magic tears" basically infected 6.

During the scene where the 3 guys get shot (16:18), the dictator guy shoots them in a way where their hands are posed as the 3 monkeys that do "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil"... Why?!
Just to point out, i believe the film maker wants us to think that a bloodborn pathogen somehow transferred to the kid through violet's tears thus making the human killer virus not lethal to him. I think there is a throw away line somewhere near then end saying as much.
There couldn't be any more style in this movie if they tried.

Love your reviews .This is super late but i recently got into your reviews and the one thing i disagree with is the the whole taking the gun out of the bag. Its not taking it too far because yes people who are germaphobs dont stop being germaphobs because the audience knows now it would lack consistency with the character shown being an over the top germaphob. Me personally i didn't really take the movie seriously because i think that was intended it was hust supposed to be an over the top "Stylised" film it was still bad but just saying from what i have watched.

The gun kata thing looks far better with pistols and semi auto weapons as opposed to automatic weapons where it just looks stupid.

Okay Deus , love the review , but the scene with the Asian-looking gang on the rooftop , they are speaking Vietnamese , an actual language , not fictional language as you said . Milla was speaking it too with a terrible accent .
well I'm no expert on languages obviously, I can only go on what the research tells me and it states that the language people spoke was developed especially for the film as I said in the video, Thats quoted from the director, so I can't really do much better then straight from the horses mouth without actually learning all the languages of the world.
I seriously thought that opening cityscape shot was an intentionally minimalist stylised opening credits sequence.
But no...no it wasn't.
As for Milla being "too invincible"...

Yeah they are speaking vietnamese, It was a misunderstanding on my part which I fully own up to however the thai-hindi language is used throughout the film, its whats written on violets sword for example its on her tattoos, and its spoken several times, don't ask me where because its been a very long time since making this video

angie73568 As a film, UltraViolet is horrible. But Sony never intended this for the box office, it was made to promote the Blu-ray format and to be used as display material in electronics stores like Bestbuy and Circuitcity. That’s why they put in all the bright colors and eye catching scenes.

I really feel like some of the actors who read the script thought it was a comedy thus the weird comedy acting in places. And honestly that would make sense as if you saw in the script "and he takes out a germ sealed gun" you'd be in your rights to assume it's a comedy.
