Regarding the bunny; I think that the thing about Mythos stories is that, in a cruel and uncaring universe, where our actions and desires have no cosmic meaning, the only things that can have meaning to us are the values we assign ourselves. The bunny is a symbol of that. It’s a toy. It has no great value, but it gains value and meaning because it’s treated as if it’s important. It’s a lovely human moment of defiance in the face of cosmic indifference.

There are many references to Alice in Wonderland in this film, the white rabbit was one of them.
The character who owns the rabbit has a Cheshire cat tattoo and makes numerous Alice and wonderland references, most obviously, "if you don't know where you're going any road will get you there."
It IS actually a subtle lovecraftian reference, as Alice in Wonderland's main theme is madness and how to tell if you're mad.

This film really did surprise me. I watched it with my parents one day on a whim and the whole twist with it being an eldritch horror really blew my mind. It was pretty comical actually because when Cthulhu was revealed I was flipping my shit and my parents had no idea what I was talking about.
It's also pretty sad that the studio clearly had ZERO faith in this film considering how little it was advertised and the month it was released in. Films like this should be made more frequently.

Yeah, this movie was so damn good. It’s a crime that it didn’t do better

    • @CopiousDoinksLLC
      @CopiousDoinksLLC ปีที่แล้ว

@@majpeaches It was a decent movie but I was pretty disappointed with the execution, considering how cool the premise was.
      - I didn't much like the casting (except for, ironically, the characters who played Smith and Emily). I don't really think Kristen Stewart is a great actress. Also, the dialogue was hard to hear a lot of the time because the sound mixing seemed a bit off (this could be just me but I've watched this movie three times on different sources and it's always hard to hear).
      - The visual design of the sets and the world was a bit lacking. I know they wanted the darkness to be scary but I feel like I could have used more of an idea what the terrain around the bases was like and also something to distinguish the bases from each other a little more. It got very samey looking at dark-blue environments after a while and it didn't really feel like the characters were actually going anywhere because there were no landmarks to gauge progress by.
      - The overall pace and flow of the movie didn't quite hit the target for me. It felt like there were too many moments that slowed the movie down so people could explain plot details or drop lore or things like that. There were a lot of scenes that were designed to be spooky but just ended up just feeling dragged out, especially in conjunction with all the jump scares that would happen in the intervening scenes.
      - The characters were a bit flat in terms of writing. TJ Miller was mildly funny but not enough to justify his screen time. Lucien almost gets a bit of depth with some hints that he could be a bit more sinister than he appears but that gets left undeveloped. Most of the people in this movie just feel like they're kind of existing alongside each other rather than actually interacting and surviving with each other because the dialogue is a little sterile.
      - I don't think they really took advantage of the Lovecraft mythos like they could have. They should have just gone full 'Shadow over Innsmouth' and made Tian Corporation a 21st century incarnation of the Marsh family, complete with human sacrifices to Dagon and employees being forced to copulate with fishmen.

Can't remember where it was, might have been Deus reading it from somewhere on stream, but the best description of Lovecraftian horror and the insanity it causes was along the lines of imagining humans as ants, completely unaware of what humanity is doing, what technology we have, the idea of "language", all of what we see as just what we are is beyond even their comprehension. And the insanity that people in Lovecraftian horror suffer is from understanding that for an instant, if just a moment coming to comprehend something so far outside and beyond their own experience, that their mind can't cope with it.

I feel like a big part of the reason this movie didn't do so well in theaters was because - at least on a surface/advertising level - it reads as "ALIEN, but in the ocean." Which is maybe not the best pitch.
That said, I do like how it shifts from "disaster movie" to "creature feature" pretty seamlessly. I'll certainly be checking this out.
Also, the movies that made me come around on Kristen Stewart were "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "American Ultra." The Twilight movies may have been her big break-out role, but they did her *no* favors.

They make pressure hulls of some deep sea ROVs out of glass and other ceramics as they get stronger under compression but are useless when it comes to impact resistance (hence the reason you see them guarded by metal bars. My main grip was actually with the flooded tunnel scenes as the water pressure would've compressed the air into nothing.

Normally, I don't like the "I'm a hero now so I gotta kill myself" plot moments, but Norah's sacrifice at the end really hammered home the whole theme of Glass Half ____, If she followed the other two survivors (or they get eaten and she shoots up after, threading the needle) it does get the optimism vs pessimism, but that is a projection for a certain future outcome, not a way of viewing a current reality. It really IS a Glass-half-full scenario at the end that she sees the projection that if she detonates the core, she and the creatures will be destroyed but the two survivors will be outside the blast, and thus her choosing to do it, and her closing lines to 'light up the dark'. This is her taking that Half-Full rather than Half-empty, and I really find the use of it in this case very satisfying.
Also, I totally thought the captain determined the earlier escape pods so no one could escape and it was some conspiracy or he was just nuts. Could still be a thing, but Idk anymore.

Something I also like about the movie: when the ladies are in their underwear in the movie, it’s not portrayed as “sexy” or just to give the audience something to look at, it’s just because they happened to be in the movie at that time, also showing how they were unprepared for what happened and/or needed to remove clothing due so they wouldn’t get uncomfortable/cold by them being wet (if my memory is correct).
I also like that Nora is shown to be a technician in a way that doesn’t come off as just convenient to the plot or something that the other characters react with surprise or amazement. It comes off as “I’m a technician, that’s why I’m employed here” and the other characters are already aware of that. Again, they didn’t put too much effort in introducing the characters beforehand so it feels very natural.
I also like that the women aren’t treated as “damsels in distress” or given special treatment for their gender, nor that Nora is especially portrayed as a “female lead character”. They’re just people, like the male characters and Nora is just the lead character. There’s no emphasis on them being female, and it’s so refreshing to see. Also like that Nora just went for a straight punch to the face when getting Emily into the escape pod, not being “gentle” but still not going further and apologises without doing so excessively. She’s just being practical and doesn’t have the time to argue. I’d love to see more movies like this and it really reminds me off (as also mentioned in the video) Alien and how the female characters act there, they’re just people, just part of the crew without emphasis on them being women or being portrayed as “sexy eye candy that needs to be rescued”.

24:54 - 25:28 This series of scenes feels eerily similar to that Sandra Bullock movie Gravity, where she tries to save the Captain, played by George Clooney, he sacrifices himself to save her, and she later has a small breakdown in an abandoned station. True, that film isn't horror, being a disaster movie in space, but it's still tense, has a pulsing rush, and hovering in the vast vaccuum of space is just as scary as being stuck miles "underwater."

I love the "Is that a baby?" line because TJ Miller also starred in the monster movie 'Cloverfield'. In the BTS of Cloverfield it was explained that the monster was actually an infant looking for it's mother. So that line could, theoretically, be an Easter Egg for that movie.

I take the element of learning about the relationships only after the fact being more believable in a different direction. I think I found that to be more believable because it shows what was important about their relationship. If it happened before it would just be two friends having fun but hearing about it after shows just how much that friendship meant even in its little stupid joke moments.

After you pointed out the Alien references, I was expecting The male survivor to be harboring a Cthulhu creature a la the chestburster. Also, the suits appear surprisingly similar to advanced one-atmo suits used in reality today, like an update from Leviathan. I’ll have to check this one out. Stewart generally turns me off as she’s a block of wood in everything I’ve seen her in, but based on your recommendation, I’ll give her another chance.

I think Abel and the bunny reminded me of how people commonly personify objects. They live in a socially isolated and dangerous space, and that kind of affection may not be welcome by you coworkers, and it would be hard to have a pet down there. It made sense to me wether it was a real bunny or not.

Thorough review! Really enjoyed this one and the movie itself.
But just one observation - on my first watching of this, I noticed, when KS is searching through the captains old locker and his things, there are alot of papers, maps, and cthulhu related info stuck up on display, including Lovecraft original hand drawn rendering of cthulhu himself - leading to the idea that the captain definitely knew what the company was up to down there.
I've watched quite a few reviews, breakdowns, explanations and analysis about this flick and not a single person has either picked up on these things, or, never included it in their vids, which I find hard to believe.
Now haven't watched this since that first viewing, and yeah, I could have imagined that stuff, but I'm pretty sure that I didn't.
Awesome video again. Loved I. Cheers for the upload

Great review as always Deus - something I always found interesting is that the Captain seemingly was aware of the creatures. When Norah is looking through his locker after his death, she finds drawings that reveal a bit of the film’s unexplored mythology. One of those drawings, quite clearly, is Cthulhu. (This is taken from a Bloody Disgusting article but you can find the actual image online)

I know I’m kind of late to the party on comments, but I recently rewatched this movie after knowing it was Lovecraftian for any other details. Anyone else notice the captain’s locker had some Cthulhu references on the map? There’s what looks to be like an upside down pentacle with some other designs in it, as well as the sketch of the Cthulhu icon signed by Lovecraft. Two hypotheses, either Cap was an investigator and tried to stop things from inside the facility (“I got 22 people out,” and trying to save everyone else), or he was a cultist trying to help Cthulhu awaken (“On a scale of one to ten, how bad is MY rig?”)

I already commented on another video that I enjoy your content but wanted to reiterate because I think it's important to express appreciation to people who provide interesting and entertaining media from nothing but their own passion and on their own time and dime. So again, I am really enjoying your reviews. You are striking the perfect balance between proper deep dive research of both the production of movies as well as deeper meaning behind the stories - and specific story elements - they're telling on the one hand and just talking about what you liked and didn't like and why on the other hand.
I really liked Underwater when I saw it and just like you said, since I knew next to nothing about it beforehand it really took me by surprise in the best of ways, turning out to be a Cthulhu story. Your review made me appreciate the movie even more. And I think it's worth pointing out how many great decisions were made on this movie, including not giving away the creature feature twist in the trailer, which is extremely rare. So very often, trailers give away far too much of the story, including parts of movies that you realize are set up to be surprises once you watch the movie. Not that The Island was a particularly great movie - although possibly the best movie Michael Bay has every made - but the trailer literally gave away the big end twist, the strongest, most interesting part of the whole story, to give just one example. I did see the trailer for Underwater before I saw the movie and I had absolutely no idea there was a big ass monster in it. Anyway, looking forward to future reviews from you.

Saw this movie when it first came out shortly before the 2020 lock-down... A proper Cthulhu movie it is too, with Deep One creatures, and (according to director William Eubanks) Cthulhu at the end.
10/10 from me as a Lovecraft fan of many years.

I'm glad more folks are realizing Stewart isn't really a bad actress per-se.
I tend to think of her like I think of pre-Captain America Chris Evans.
Folks are so stuck on them playing this one archetype they often get cast as (Chris being the smarmy jerk type, KStew being the bland 'audience insert character) while the roles they actually get to show some talent in tend to be less seen roles.
Evans eventually got Captain America where people realized "Wait, this guy CAN play other things" and hopefully Kristen will eventually be in something that is popular enough folks can see past Twilight.

This film and Life (2017) are hugely underappreciated imo, sure they have a lot of elements of Alien/Aliens between them but any sci-fi-horror film with a hostile/claustrophobic environment and a creature/creatures running about is bound to at this point. There are only so many things you can do with a concept like that, so you may as well crib from the best.
