The novelization to this was actually pretty good. The Weinsteins really tore apart what was a decently competent script.

Indeed.. I read it once 10 years ago and it's stuck with me ever since then. It looked to be from what Goyer wanted to do; it was so well written and added so much to what we have now. What a tragedy of studio interference this movie is.. it woulda been barrier breaking for comic films back then as it was ballsy enough to end on such a dire ending along with how dark and melancholy it was.

What's sad it that this movie was going to be it's own thing (filmmaker wanting to do it out of respect.), but then Miramax came in and demanded a poor copy of the original. This wasn't meant to be "The Crow 1/2" it's was meant to be a continuation in the universe, hence being called "The Crow: City of Angels".
GoodBadFlicks does a great detailed explanation for why the movie is the way it is now and what the in was meant to be.

The fact that Gabriel is in this movie makes me think he's some kind of immortal cat, since not only did he somehow survive alone in Eric and Shelly's apartment for a year in the first movie, but in this one he's like a decade older and doesn't look the tiniest bit old and decrepit.

Sara does seem to have gone a bit mad after everything she went through in the first movie. Makes sense she'd be a bit off. Apparently her mom took off not long after Eric went back to the afterlife...so she literally lost everyone and almost died in the span of like...a month or two.

The first captured such a spirit of that age. When I watch it I'm a teenager again. The music, the clothes...even the heightened stylized shit feels authentic. It's what any story set in the World of Darkness should feel like. Hell more movies period.

When you read the script, the scene where she shoots at the crow came before Ashe is resurrected, as she's trying to avoid any involvement. Same applies with the scene of Curve in the tattoo shop, that actually extends on from the point she receives the sugar skull, which is why her and her boss are still in the exact same positions they were at the end of that scene. The directors cut is an editing mess.

I think it's important to note that neither this version (director's cut) nor the theatrical cut were the filmmakers' intended version of the film. Harvey Weinstein, aka Satan incarnate, re-edited the original submitted cut, as he did with many other films he produced, cutting out and switching around a lot of the scenes. For example, the scene where Sarah shoots at the crow and Iggy Pop attacks her about the tattoo originally took place before Ashe is resurrected. I like a lot of the concepts in this film and I really think a true director's cut would be good and help the movie.

  • @KiramidHead

Good Bad Flicks did a good job explaining why the movie isn't great and the acting feels odd, even the directors cut isn't anything like what the director actually wanted, the studio(of course) felt they knew better and the now terrible movie is what is left. the original may have been bad too but when hearing what it was supposed to be i doubt it. never seen this sequel, all i have seen is the crow and wicked prayer and honestly speaking the crow was a great movie and i think, no matter what they do the sequels will never surpass it or be on level given the studio probably no longer has faith in sequels and any creativity will be dashed away

    • @ermacjones4821
      @ermacjones4821 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Yeah, the studios are constantly destroying movies, they just don't seem to understand that the changes they make ALWAYS ruin movies. They're absolute idiots who somehow have no idea what people want to see in a movie.

I fell in love with this movie because of the style/the look, the soundtrack, and yes., Vincent Perez's performance. The story WAS a good story, the problem was the final product being chopped up and pissed on by the Weinstein co.
The thing is, I instantly "got" what Pope and Goyer were going for...even through the studio chopped editing, I could see it (maybe I was lucky).
The look as this sulphur -like drenched pallet, filled with smog, broken glass... artistically, the setting was beautiful - a pretty dark and decrepit beauty anyway.
The way Pope set up some of the shots with Perez were amazing as well. Particularly the shot as he first puts on his coat after Sarah helps him understand and he looks over his shoulder...it was damn near scary, and that was perfect. Another as he stands in the runoff tunnel facing down Curve as Curve yells and taunts at him. The setup of that shot...the blue forelight on Perez with that sepia, smog filled background and the look on Perez's (Ashe's) face....very very good.
I didn't much care for the character of Judah...however THAT was mostly due to the interference with the cuts to the film by the studio...I understand that his character was more fleshed out in the film that Pope shot and the story that Goyer wrote.
In my opinion, this film gets way more hate than it deserves.
It seems to me that most of it has nothing to do with the quality or lack thereof of the film itself, but from confused "fans" that never quite understood that this film, this story was of a completely different character than that of Brandon Lee's Eric Draven. The attitude seems to be that because Lee died during the filming of the first film, that the idea, the mythos, and the property of 'The Crow' should die with him.
To me, that attitude is asinine and frankly, I don't believe Brandon Lee would have wanted that. I know that Lee was very passionate about OBarr's creation and he was proud to be apart of the project. He was amazing. But I don't think for a second that he would have wanted The Crow to die with him.
On that note...think too how Perez must have felt steeping into that role knowing that some fans would have their inevitable, misplaced assumptions. He spoke briefly on his hesitation with the role on the special features on COA. You can tell he had a very humble approach to entering into the film franchise of The Crow because of how great Lee did in the original.
That said...I'm really looking forward to the new film with Bill Skarsgard. I think he will do great.
No film, no actor needs to "compete" with Proyas's and Brandon Lee's film and performance. It's not something to compete with. It's a piece of art and they own what they did. That can never be taken away. What should also never be taken away however, is this amazing, original story...this amazing concept of The Crow that James Obarr created through his own pain and loss.
It's sorrow from a man that turned into a beautiful gift for all of us, and I for one appreciate it greatly.

Great review! But I have to point out a mistake. It is quite common amongst movie lovers because it was so overused. The coin for the ferryman goes bellow the tongue, not on the eyes.
Also the name for a crow in Latin is Corvus corone, Corvidae is the family Crows belong to, which includes ravens, magpies, rooks, jackdaws etc. Essentially you were right in the classification, just mixed up a few terms. Like I said, it's a great review, very well done, and I love it.

I suppose the thought process of the needle in the nose thing would be because snorting something grants the most immediate effect of a drug because there is less of a blood-brain barrier in the nose but I don't see the point of injecting it directly into the dude's brain cuz aside from the initial penetration you wouldn't feel anything since you do not have pain receptors in your brain. also a needle that long would probably just cause him severe brain damage anyway so if you want to shove a sharp thing up someones nose for shock value why don't you have the dude straight perform a makeshift lobotomy?

I can't believe the guy who played Judah also played Early Grace on Firefly. He was literally the worst part of watching this film for me, yet EG is the best bad guy in Firefly.
I liked Curve's understated death scene. I imagine they cut out the whole girl breaking her back and getting raped and went with the far more poetic Curve breaking his back and being sent to certain death instead. A great choice for multiple reasons.
Being a fan of the Cure, this was a pretty big let down because Tim Pope, the director of many of the Cure's best videos, was getting his first big shot in feature films and I wanted him to succeed. Unfortunately the studio got far too involved and stepped on too many of Pope's ideas.
Also shocking was the Cure, who had written Burn for the Crow also wrote Adonais for City of Angels but for some strange reason Tim Pope never used it.

Not sure what the cinematographer with this pee tinged yellow shade throughout the film. It's actually 1 of the things that have put me off checking this out.

I stopped in this one because I really hate it. I hope you found something interesting to sneer.
If you're looking for weird things to see - if you never saw it, Nomads with Pierce Brosnan. I'm unable to give a movie type as it's very clear from various so called genre divisions I don't understand what is qualified as a horror. And really fake blood tossed on things doesn't make it either.
Anyways not requesting a review - although I wouldn't say no, but Nomads is a good story for people with IQs not even asking for proof of it.
Anyways if you watch it I hope you like it

    • @deusdeaconReviews

because the crow sequels were literally the very first videos i ever made and at the time i didn't have the skill to do the first film justice in a video.

why not ? undead slightly anti-hero with tragic backstory fighting evil in LA, seemed appropriate to me.

  • @jeremyallen492

It's ironic how you brought up the Resident Alice movies in your conflict of continuity point when the later Devil May Cry games were far worse. (See: Dante getting his Devil Trigger in 3 when game one Dante says that even as a child he had his demon power, Dante acting like a total twat in the fourth and fifth games despite the fact he was a decent guy in the first two games etc.)

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

retconning a characters backstory and slightly changing his demeanour (he was still a twat in the first three games) is no where near as bad as some of things done in the resident evil films, for example, the entire world plunged into ecological disaster, completely ignored in the following films

the true version of his film was never released thanks to the weinsteins. the studio wanted it be original and unique, that was until they saw wot the director had given them. their response was make it like the first one, hench the bastardized and butchered version we have released today. good review, love ur channel.

They could have at least gotten the smog levels, degeneracy and pollution correct. Seriously, LA is much more of a toilet than what this movie presents.

You know what I miss? I miss an intimidating bad guy that I hate. Not some male escort with gothic make up (Judah) not iggy pop and not the yellow fucking ranger. Bland thugs aren’t scary. They belong in death wish 4 and other awful schlock. I want a bad guy that makes me say “oh shit, I wasn’t expecting that.” Remember when the trope punk got his heart ripped out by the terminator? When the cliche mob boss got his mouth severed in half by the joker? When the entire cartel of b movie actors were poisoned by mild mannered Gustavo Fring? A movie is only as good as its villain. Just give me a goddamn interesting villain. It’s not that hard. If cornball George Lucas can do it, anyone can do it.
