Kind of the same here, but with the Arex Delta M, which is essentially the same profile as the G19 (uses the same holster). Tried a lot of other pistols but every time I shot them, including the G3C and the P365 (which I also own) and the other micros I've rented... I liked the Arex more and more.
Ironically while renting those at the range, the salesmen basically hinted at what our journey's end would look like, so I think a lot of people in the business feel the same way. I now recommend staying with subs or larger whenever people ask.
I can see using a micro as a backup pocket pistol, but if you're in that bad of a shootout, or your primary equipment fails that badly, then I'd say you're screwed no matter what.

But when I am doing daily business, I carry a P365, I live in a dangerous city with loads of "gun free zones," so the smaller profile is what I need. I looked/handled a Echelon at Lgs. that is a full size frame. You might get away with calling it a compact but not sub or micro. I didn't get a chance to shoot it but it does feel good in my hands. I would have a hard time wearing that IWB! It would be a fun gun to use at the range/bedside or even local small competition. The one I looked at didn't have the o[tic, (as all the reviewers had!) and it was selling for 679!

I disagree that it's a great time to be a gun owner. Ignoring the hostile political climate, we really have a rather slim variety of choices. Yes, we have tons of polymer striker fired Glock ripoffs and AR15s. Aside from those two niches, the selection is pretty terrible. Take AKs, for example. Or revolvers. Or FALs. Or bolt action hunting rifles. Or lever actions. Not everything should be a self defense tacticool gun, but that seems to be the only niche manufacturers cater towards.

I’ve always felt that my goal for an EDC pistol was not necessarily the smallest possible pistol but rather the pistol that I can comfortably carry and shoot reasonably well. For me, not all the micro nines fit that definition. I’d rather carry a slightly larger pistol that’s still small enough to be comfortably concealable because I can shoot it so much better. The only way I know to figure this out is to shoot a lot of different pistols until you find what works best for you.

P365 platform accepts 10 rd flush, 12 rd, 15 rd, and 17 rd magazines. Sig Mags are expensive, but you get all adapters and the adapted magazines fit cleanly without much wiggling. Carry the tiny 10 round when you must, but you can extend the grip with a bigger magazine.
I use a combination of the standard P365 (usually with 12 rd sized grip) and the X-macro. I find it easy to be efficient with one platform, and I shoot the standard P365 pretty well because I can practice so much with that style. I swapped out the curved trigger with a flat one in the P365 because I’m that anal. It’s just my mini-macro.
The macro is a better shooter and easier to get a good grip, but the smaller the grip, the easier to conceal.
Not saying it’s for everyone. Lots of great options out there, including but not limited to the examples Chris used. If you plan/hope to expand on the same platform, my advice is to start small and build up with extended mags.

I'm not dogging Outlaw here, but I'm not sure how this is even a topic worth discussing. Can you conceal the gun well enough for concealed carry? Does it have enough capacity to feel safe? If so, who the hell cares if it's a sub or not??
Sure, Micros are the hot item right now. And what many people who buy before really thinking on it will often see is they aren't nearly as easy to shoot as something with a bit more beef in the grip, and a slightly longer sight radius.
Light and tiny as possible rarely means better. As far as I'm concerned, there's far fewer reasons to need that form factor over a compact or sub.

Hand size means a lot in accuracy, which is never the best under high stress, anyway. I have never found a micro or subcompact that fits my large hands well. I have long fingers too. I am only 6'1" 220, but I have large hands. I just bought my 1st 380 and its the 15+1 doublestack Ruger Security. Its about the same size as my G19 clone. It just came out last year too! I look and try to find something small, but I never have. Those tiny micro LCP's looked great to throw in my pocket, but shooting one would be awful with my hand size and I knew it. I can also shoot all my doublestack wider grip handguns all day long, and accurately, and comfortable too. Its just a bit harder to conceal tho for sure.

Thanks as usual for your outstanding videos. Trigger reach and where a handgun fits in the webbing between the thumb and first finger on the shooting hand is everything when it comes to finding a great fit no matter how much I may otherwise like or drool over a particular handgun. I am a glutton for pocket pistols, but I like subcompacts and compacts that fit me too. Luckily, all of the handgun manufacturers are moving away from the one size fits all concept (some faster than others) and are offering different sized grip modules instead of just different back straps. Great time to be a gun buyer and owner at least from the variety of handguns out there that can fit just about anyone.

You are spot on with your analysis that the trigger finger reach is essential for an accurate shooting experience.
My IWI Masada Slim requires me to combine thumb forward with revolver style grip to achieve a trigger reach that is comfortable and enables a zone hits .
My CANIK TP9SC Elite on the other hand allows me to either thumb forward grip it or revolver style - both enable accurate shooting as my trigger reach is perfect out of the box .
As for the basic question if compact and SC are still needed? I'll answer that for me next week when I get my S&W M&P 5.7. if all goes well, this will be my next go to EDC. We'll see ... Good video, thanks for sharing your opinion. And yes, you can go into a gun store, let the staff show you a couple of guns and leave without buying one . I have a very simple and relatively cheap solution if your micro 9mm's grip feels too small. Try getting a Hogue rubber sleeve for it. I have one on a S&W Bodyguard 380 and my P365XL. It gives some additional palm swell to my medium glove sized hands. The weight is negligible and the additional width is so minor that it doesn't cause the gun to print. I am also partial to the grippiness that rubber provides while still being soft pressed against my stomach.

I’ve been in sketchy situations with the sig before, and just recently I went through my first sketchy situation with the Wilson. I cannot overstate the difference in confidence that the Wilson instilled in me that night that I would be able to hit the shitstack across the parking lot before he could hit me. The difference in price may be about $2,000… but if you lost your life and got a chance to buy it back for 2k that would sound like a hell of a deal to most people all of a sudden

I shoot that better than any of the others, and it's actually fun to shoot. I recently got the 80x, which I thought I'd like more, but the size is amazing. My next stop is actually the M&P9 compact, as I think it's slightly slimmer than a 19. The grip and thickness are the pieces that affect me most. It's a journey, that's for sure.

When I’ve had family members with larger hands try to shoot my micro and subcompact guns, I’ve noticed accuracy issues due to poor trigger pull because of where their fingers sit in relation to the trigger, and also skin irritation due to where the back strap of the pistol sits (and thus hits under recoil). If I had large hands, I’d likely stick with a larger “compact” pistol. Unless I want a pocket gun, in which case I’d get a LCP Max and just deal with the poor ergos.

I may get a lot of hate for saying this, but I feel like MOST micro sized pistols would be better suited for a softer shooting round like 380. Something like the P365 XL is probably one of the few exceptions to this rule because the extra slide mass & grip softens the blow just enough. But with its longer slide and grip, one can argue about whether it's a true "micro" pistol or not. Yes, with 380 you definitely sacrifice a good amount of power, but accuracy and speed are more important for self-defense in my opinion. Also, if the gun is more enjoyable to shoot, you are more likely to practice with it. And although 380 is more expensive than 9mm, 9mm in a micro pistol presents a much steeper learning curve for MOST people, which equals more required practice and more required ammo. A micro 380 on the other hand can be mastered by most people with much less ammo comparatively speaking, and it's much easier to have fun doing it.

    • @paulfaggart3423
      @paulfaggart3423 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree. I think that's why 380 is making a surge right now. When consumers learn they can carry a lighter recoiling round that passes FBI test standards in a smaller and more comfortable package, then you know what happens next. lol
Not all 380 ammo is made equal, but there are some loadings that meet the 12 inch penetration requirements and expand reliably. Bullet technology is only going to get better too.

I think the micro 9s are a fantastic step forward. Easy to conceal with good capacity. I have had the shield plus and a 43x. What I learned is I just don't shoot micros as well as sub compacts. The thin flat micros cause me to shoot left and I really have to hyper focus to hit where I want. With sub compacts I'm much more naturally accurate. I don't think I'm the only person with this experience so I think there will always be a place for sub compacts.

Also wider grip between a 1" and a 1.3" will disperse percieved recoil over more surface area. Also, for those that have good recoil control

I personally as a skinny individual still find it's not worth the trade off to go smaller when I can carry my compact 509, PX4, or PDP just as easily and conceal pretty much the same. All things being equal, I go compact about 90% of the time these days.

Agreed, I have the p365xl, the fn reflex, and a shield, and I still find myself grabbing the 509c most often

Same, I started out with a micro (Hellcat), then went to some heavier micros (Shield Plus, Kimber Mako) and now I'm finding I prefer a subcompact. That extra bit of heft and thickness only makes like 10% harder to conceal but, for me, like 40% easier and more accurate to shoot with than the really tiny micros (and like 20% more than the Shield Plus/Kimber Mako).
Few more years I'll probably be up compacts lol. My frame is too small to ever concealed carry a full size but the more I shoot, the more I gravitate to how much more confident I feel with a bigger pistol.

Another solid video as always. There really is no way to compare what works for an individual without shooting them first.
I bought a P320 x compact (vs a 365 macro) because the grip fit my hand perfectly, with the exact trigger reach and length of pull that I need.
That said, I will be getting a 365 macro or xl as well.
365 for summer, 320 for winter.

I bought a micro pistol and sold it to get a subcompact - the micro (hellcat) was so extremely snappy and hard to shoot well and fast even at 15yds that I got a G19 which I shoot WORLDS better. Micros sound good in theory - but shooting them absolutely sucks.

You should try the Canik MC9. Great pistol. Small, shoots great, accurate, NOT snappy AT ALL. Shoots better than my G19 IMO. Just got one after trying it out. Pretty much tried most of the competition at the range over the last few months. Totally agree with you on the Hellcat. Hated it. It also pinched my pinky between the bottom of the mag and grip. Hellcat Pro was cool, but no different than the G19 other than a slightly better trigger and more expensive. The Canik TP9 SC seemed cool, but I wasn't impressed after shooting it. It's essentially the same size as a G19, but REALLY chunky! Especially with the huge slide catch/release on each side. You'd think it would be smaller, but it's not. Basically just has different dimensions and shape. Made that a no go. Currently using the G19 as CC, but might move to the MC9 once proved 100% reliable at the range. And no, I've had 0 problems with it thus far.

Sounds like you should try the 43x. Same capacity as the G19 if using shield arms mags or micro dagger mags but thinner. Has the same length of barrel so it should be easy to shoot for you.

As an old guy I don't care for iwb. My edc is 30 years old and all steel. Heavy besturd but I find it comforting. I did like the video. It's always interesting to see side by side comparisons by Chris.

Shield Plus is my current carry-nice to have 10, 13, and 15 round mag options in a smaller gun.

Great video as always. I agree, the largest mico 9 pistols shoot considerably better than the smallest ones. Thinness matters a lot when conceal carrying. That's what makes the Shield Plus so interesting. Its thinness doesn't affect accuracy & holds its own against larger pistols. My PC Shield Plus with its 4" ported barrel shoots as good as my Ruger SR9C & CZ P10C pistols.

I greatly prefer the micro 9 category because you're much more likely to carry it, and let's face it, we carry, but more likely than not we'll not have to use our carry gun for anything. In that case being smaller and lighter but still having adequate shootability will win out.
I much prefer the micro 9. Now make one in DA/SA!!!

I'll take my 1st gen S&W M&P.40 with 4.25 barrel for any kind of carry ( because that's what I've got lol ) I put an Apex trigger and a spring kit in it and it's perfect for me with the biggest grip insert. Practice with what ya got fellers, and fellets.

I have a 2.0 in 9 with 4.25 " barrel and apex trigger, and a Holosun 507C. (lost mine rear sight, but I still carried it for 3 years) About 4 months ago I bought a S&W Equalizer turned out to be a good gun with 507K on it and 3.65" barrel. the grip is thinner and I carry in a We the people holster IWB. I carry it now and enjoy every time I go to the range. When bedtime comes it sits on a table with a 1100 lul. flashlight (not WML) .
