  • The Porsche 718 Boxster and Boxster S is the latest evolution of the mid-engine sports car from Porsche. After 20 years, Porsche has replaced the flat-six Boxer engine with two new 4-cylinder turbo engines, producing 300 or 350hp. This latest Boxster has better handling a new suspension and steering to make it feel even better. the biggest change is the sound of the engine. The new Boxster or Boxter is now called the 718.
    Competitors to the Porsche Cayman are the Jaguar F-Type, Porsche Boxster, Boxster S, Porsche Cayman, Cayman S, Porsche 911, 911 cabriolet, Audi TT, Alfa Romeo 4C, Audi A5, BMW Z4, BMW 4 Series, BMW 6 Series, BMW 2 Series, Chevrolet Corvette, Chevy Corvette, Corvette Z06, Ford Mustang GT, Lamborghini Huracan, Lexus, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mclaren 650s, Mercedes CLK, Mercedes SL550, Mercedes E-Class

    I’ve got a 718 and it’s a big improvement on the old models. Ignore the engine noise twerps.

    My favourite part of driving the last gen was that flat-six sound. It's become part of what you expect when driving a Porsche sports car, if you really love Porsches, I think. This one just doesn't sound as sonorous and Porsche-y. Looks damn good though. They're really killing it lately on the design front, inside and out, IMO.

    I enjoy your videos. Please tell me that the 2017 Boxster/Cayman offers keyless entry and start. At these prices having to get a key out of my pocket to start the vehicle would be a deal breaker. Also are the seat side bolsters any wider or adjustable? Thank you.

    Single turbo, does it have unequal headers? At the engine cutaway (by the way, they could have removed some of those hoses everywhere!) it looks like it could be a UEL header, explaining the Subaru/Beetleish sound.

    I own this car--with a stick, which is the only way to go--and the car sounds great as soon as you get on it. Amazing what people find to complain about. It's not necessary to get the S, by the way. The base 718 Boxster is fast as F.

    • @69FOSTER
      @69FOSTER 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've read other articles that say the same thing, the power difference between the base 718 Boxster and the S model is not worth the $12,000 price increase and that the power increase in the S is not all that noticeable on city streets compared to the base Boxster. I'm glad to read this comment, it will help with my decision on which Porsche to buy.

    Nice job as always. As a 987.2 cayman owner its sad that the flat six is going away from the product lineup except for the GT versions, especially considering its only been a relative short time free of the IMS issues with the dfi version. I know its progress, and maybe this is the same shift as wonder cooled...but as a Porsche Enthusiast yourself...what are your thoughts losing the flat six?

    • @Motormouth...
      @Motormouth...  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Damon Spencer Porsche, like very other manufacturer has do downsize its engines to meet stricter emissions and fuel requirements, it's just a fact. The flat six is an icon, but these new cars have more of everything. Power, torque, handling and efficiency. The Flat six will be around in the 911 line for now but time moves on. I bet the next Mustang GT will have an EcoBoost V6, not a V8. It will be faster, with more power but the same discussion will come around the death of the throaty V8 sound…As we move towards an electrified transposition system, which is many decades away, these cars will end up being hybrids, like the 918 but even more sophisticated.

    Me and my wife planned to get a used Aston Martin next year. But she has always wanted a cayman. It seems to me you can get a fully loaded cayman S with all leather interior, sports seats, pasm, pdk. All the goodies and come in around 90k. Also with the European delivery it would be alot of fun to get. As far as the sound. Yep nothing sounds cooler then an aircooled flat 6. People want to complain about sound get an air cooled 911. Otherwise just talking a bunch of nonsense.

    When you watch all these reviews on the 718 Boxsters they all seem to make excuses for the new sound being "not as good." The turbo 4 arrives due to emissions and 5% gain in economy period (although owning several turbo cars in my life, I know they don't get any better economy if you "use" the turbos). In order to sell them, they have to dial up the hp and torque totally changing the character of the car (power delivery and sound). I'll enjoy the noise of my flat 6 981 6-speed, even if I get passed by a new 718! :) BTW, did anyone notice Porsche slipped in a VW 2.0L turbo Macan? Porsche is now 90%+ turbo!!

    *constructed OPINION on why this DOES NOT sound like a Subaru....*. Let's talk about three common music/sound elements. Pitch. Rhythm (which in this case we will use the exhaust patterns instead) and tempo (which in this case we will use show fast it goes to fast revs) . Literally same Porsche patterns. However, lower pitch (unless u hate lower pitch, then u also much hate muscle and AMG cars), and lastly the tempo is still Porsche. The ONLY possibly STI sounding part is the first few few rpms where there's some air blow sounding revs. But barely game breaking...I am NOT saying it's better than flat 6. Hells no. But y'all need to stop riding this hype hate train and maybe use your ears instead of bandwagon opinions :) it ISNT as good as flat 6. But it is NOT a Subaru.

    Great looking car, and I"m sure it's an amazing drive, however a 4 cylinder with that kind of output isn't going to last as long as a 6 cylinder. Not only are repairs on these cars astronomically expensive, but Porsche will see in a few years that the used car market for 718s is poor based on the residual value. Good luck moving 3-4 year old 718s off the lot when these engines aren't going to last more than 150K before needing major repairs. The used car market for six cylinder boxster/caymens just got real hot!

    • @TheCa007
      @TheCa007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i agree 100%, the v6 boxter/cayman in the next year should go up significantly. 100k for turbo 4 cylinder, never. Atleast the 911 kept a v6, i don't believe the v6 turbos will sale well either. I talked to a porsche sales rep. the other day he said "they can't keep a used boxter, or cayman, they selling like hot cakes". ;).

      ***** You're kidding me, right? Just because an engine has same displacement and same forced induction technology doesn't mean it's the same... it doesn't even sound the same... wtf Subaru STI uses a boxer-4 while Porsche uses their own Flat-4

      +Michael Lee may not be the same but sounds the same. like a cheap piece of shit, but its 100k after a few add-ons. sad, cheaper to buy a wrx or evo, same motor almost, the specialness is gone from this model.

    • @mykullee
      @mykullee 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheCa007 I personally think the 718 has more of tiny V8 rumble resemblance in this Flat-4. It sounds different from a STI or even base WRX. I totally do understand your point though, 100K is stupid expensive for a sports car with Flat-4 engine...
      I think the enhancements of a car you get when you pay 100K is really nothing more than more luxurious interior, better handling, better steering, better transmission is all. I think those has to be the only points that would beat WRX.

      All turbo charged engines sound that! I've owned a number of powerful 4 cylinder cars, Porsche 356's and 914's and it's all about power to weight ratio and handling! I used to race a very well prepared Porsche 356 and nothing could beat it at the Grand Prix Race Track in Alabama. I owned Porsche 914's and nothing could beat them in auto cross racing I used to do. They handled better than any car I've ever driven! I had a buddy who owned a real Posche 550 Spyder and nobody ever beat him in auto cross competition! The new 718 hearkens back to the original 718's which kicked ass on the race track! Back then the 718's had a specially designed 4 cam flat 4 cylinder engine which had a displacement of only 1500 cc's. This engine produced amazing power for such a small engine! Back then it was the 4 cam design which was the secret weapon. The new 718's use specially designed turbo charging technology to produce amazing power from engines which are only 2.0 and 2.5 liters.
      There's a man I know from my home town in Ohio who's still alive and 91 years old. His name is Don Sesslar and he used to race the 718's very successfully at all the major races all over North America from the late 1950's through the mid 1960's. Don usually finished 2nd through 5th place overall beating many cars with much larger displacement engines and always won his class in 718's. Do a Google search on Don Sesslar and you'll see I'm not making up this story.
      The new Porsche 718 models offer amazing performance and good fuel economy for the price! The base price is only $59,000 and with options you get 0 - 60 mph acceleration of 4.0 seconds and I believe a top speed of more than 180 mph and handling which will outperform any other car on the road! You get this kind of pin you in your seat performance and fuel economy of up to 28 mpg! Lastly, it looks awesome! What's there not to like about the new 718's?!......You gotta love this new model!

    • @brucehajost4476
      @brucehajost4476 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Lastly, it will get up to 28 mpg and looks awesome! What's there not to like about it! There's a reason why GM is preparing to offer a mid engine Corvette soon, however, it will cost well over 100 grand!

    I have driven it. Steering is better but that is all. The wheel seems cheaper with plasticky, less premium feel with silly controls on it. Rear stying looks bland and dated. Front also more bland than 981. Car is quicker than equivalent 981 but has sold its soul, as old F6 engine much nicer throttle response and wonderful sound. New engine is simply awful and ruins the character of the car, makes it feel like an Audi. Big backward step by Porsche, they are losing their class and joining the mundane squad. As for this guy saying it sounds great, he must need a hearing aid!

    • @paulwood862
      @paulwood862 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are mad. The steering is much better as it’s 911 steering rack. The front and rear are both better looking - it’s nearly a full second quicker than the old F6 to 60. The throttle response is 100 times better than any naturally aspirated engine as the power band starts from 1900 not 5500. Step on it in any gear at any speed and it will demolish the F6 in virtually all of them. It’s brakes are out of the 911 so also much better.

    Beyond a bias review

    This is just Porsches latest attempt to distinguish the 911 as THE Porsche to have. Perhaps most people here don't understand the big deal, but as a 981 owner, I can tell you to think of it this way, you have a favorite restaurant, where you buy your favorite dinner, and lets say its Steak. Now imagine you go there, that same Steak is more expansive, and it doesn't taste the same, the experience is not the same. Now you have a choice of either embracing the change as this idiotic reviewer pointed out, or you decide to go and buy something else. It's probably a great car, if you haven't driven the previous model, if there is no comparison, but when you have a base expectation, and the new product doesnt do it for you, well, you look elsewhere.

      Stan Malikov I have a 981 as well and I prefer it over the new one. When I get my next Porsche at some point in the future it will have to be a 911 with that flat 6 sound. It probably won't be for years as I love my car as much as I did the day I bought it

    just embrace whats new? WTF, how much did they pay this guy for this information? sounds fantastic, yeah right. That thing sounds like shit. suspension drop of 20mm, 10mm and x73 was in the old car, that is nothing new. Feels lighter yeah right its heavier, how the hell is it lighter? this bullshit sales pitch is a joke, and at this point so is the review. I'm sure v6 boxster /cayman values will go up and this 4 pot turbo 718 will probably be the end of mid-engine porsche, sad, they killed the car that saved them from bankruptcy.

      +TheCa007 I agree with you on the "sound like shit part" but other than that you are COMPLETELY wrong. First of all, I quote him "nothing will sound like the flat V6 it replaced". It never said it sounded fantastic compared to the 6 cyclinder. The mid engine is what ALMOST killed Porsche and made them go bankrupt. It was Cayenne that saved them. Learn your facts before you spew BS lol.

      number 1. the cayenne is a Johnny come lately. it did not save porsche the boxter/cayman did back when they came out in the late 1900s when 911s sales dropped drastically, hit prior to a cayenne being built.
      number 2. he did say and i quote " it doesn't sound the same but just except it" I'm not excepting bending over for 100k 4 cylinder, corporate sales bullshit like u buddy. number 3. he said " its heavier than the the 981 because with the turbos its a larger engine ". number 4. he said the adjustable 20mm was not offered on 981, the suspension was offered on the 981 of 20mm, 10mm down to x73 race suspension, how do i know, i own a 981 gts 2016, and i have the x73 suspension. number 5, and most importantly, your a dumbass, for listening to this bullshit and not seeing it for the sales pitch it is. grow up kid or old man, either way your brain is to soft for this conversation.

      +TheCa007 Yes, the Boxster and the 996 saved Porsche but the Cayenne was the product that made them a lot of money. I suggest that you drive this car before you beat on it. I have driven it and it does everything better than the old car with the exception of the sound. In fact, the Boxster S went around the Nurburgring just a few seconds slower than the GT4.Yes, the current GTS has the lower suspension but now you can get it in the S, where the base car can be ordered with a 10mm drop.While the new car is heavier by 5kg, which isn't much, this car has more power, more torque and a vastly improved steering and suspension. I own a 993 with the most amazing air-cooled sound. That can't be replicated and is one reason I own one. That being said, the newer cars are faster, better handling and safer. Once again, drive the S, you will be impressed with the way it drives.

      thank you for replying with that answer. no disrespect intended but lets be frank, the engine is what made the boxter/cayman special besides ride quality and handling. that is why i bought my car is because of the engine. in your review of the 981 gts you said, that you wouldn't take a cayman gts over a cayman s, you would just take a decently spec. Cayman s. so, it's about choice for you like everybody else. Their will all ways be a latest and greatest, faster isn't everything that doesn't makes a car great, the nissan gtr is faster than the average porsche save gt3. Special is a different story, the 718 is a 4 cylinder turbo just like a wrx, evo, ford focus sti, etc, its not special, just faster. also, it cost with the carbon ceramic brakes, up graded chairs and sound system over 100k. Now how is this any different from over price statement you made for not getting a 981 gts? your paying more money for a heavier, smaller steering wheel, cheap motor with turbos, but its faster, the cheavy camaro zl1 or mustang gt350r is faster and are N/A, also cheaper. Sorry my friend, what i see is a porsche sales review. pit the 2 cars side by side ( 718 and 981) for driver experience and involvement. With regular people not reviewers that deal with corporate pressure and I'm sure the 981 woud win. Of that i have no dought.
      Finally would you drop your 933 for a faster, better ride, better seats, faster at the ring, but turbo only 991.2? if no, then why not? you gave less than half of these sales points for a 718 over a 981, so I'm dying for an answer.

      +TheCa007 As I said, drive the car. You have no idea what you are talking about until you spend some time behind the wheel. I bet the average person will like the better handling 718 with more power. As you stated-"so, it's about choice for you like everybody else." Exactly. This car isn't for you but it doesn't make it a bad car, it's just different, which is what I said in the review. BTW, I agree that the flat six engine will be collectible and maybe more reliable in the long run but that we have to wait to see. I'm considering a current Boxster S as a used car in a few years so my wife can drive it. For a long term keeper, it might be more reliable just like my 993. That and a Cayenne diesel. The 993 isn't fast but it is collectable, the price has gone up over the past few years, something any current Porsche, including your GTS, will not enjoy.... I'm not selling the car for Porsche but giving the info on the new product and my opinion, which is why it is called a review.
