The facelifts to the Boxster over the last 5 or 6 years turned it into a very good looking car.
Got to admit... that four cylinder sounds pretty good...
But the old six sounded more than just pretty good.
richard165s I was between 718 and 981 GTS, and trust me 718 sounds like subaru while 981 GTS sound is intoxicating
richard165s if 718 were the first cayman/boxter ever made, it then will be the best sounding cayman/boxter ever.
And the 981 Spyder sounds better again than the GTS!
Also test the 981 before buying the 718. The 718 has a low growl. The 981 has a high soaring wail. Opinions differ. You all decide.
Dr Raymond Tan Suan-Kuo was it the 981 GTS ? Cause nothing beats the sound GTS makes no matter where in rev range it is . That exhaust sound then scream of engine is hard to beat , once you try 981 GTS , 718 can't be matched
I've been checking out the 718 Cayman S in Miami blue for a while - so happy you guys finally reviewed it. In terms of price, you're really paying for the badge and the fact that it's a mid-engine sports car from a company with a long heritage.
You guys make the best reviews of any car. You make even the most boring car exciting. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the nice review KBB. To those who complain about the price, the new 4-cylnder engine and various other quibbles, I'm wondering how many of you have owned a Boxster or even test driven one? I'm on my 5th Boxster with the new 718 as my current one so I have a lot of experience with these cars. This doesn't make my opinion gospel, but at least it's from real-world experience. Admittedly, I was a bit disappointed with the sound of the new 4s and in some ways I miss the old engine sound, but the overall driving experience far outweighs this small negative for me. I traded in a Boxster S for a well-equipped base and it blows my old S out of the water in many ways including newer technology, speed and handling. Before you complain about the engine or anything else relating to performance, I suggest you go test drive one.

Great review, and I agree with what most car reviewers in the sense that 718 is the best Porsche you can and should buy.
Kudos to your gimbal cam operator. That transition shot from the frunk to trunk was the most original shot I've seen in a car vid for years.

I test drove this and fell in love with it, but wanted to add I am 6'6 and fit in it comfortably (yes with the top). This is the only roadster I have ever fit in, and it's a glorious vehicle.

I just configured GT Silver Cayman with 911 20-inch wheels, manual transmission, and black/red interior. Total beauty for 65K euro. Going to print it out and put it on my wall for reference!

I have the Cayman and only got Miami Blue, PDK and Carrera S wheels as extras. I don't think you need much more it's meant to be a sports car not a luxury car. Alcantara standard seats are soooo nice as well, much nicer than leather or sportex i think.
Excellent review though I am still unsure about that 4 banger.....
I look at it this way: you'll be laughing last when yours is the sports car that can actually be driven every day, instead of on weekends.
I should clarify -- it's not that a V6/V8/etc. is bad, it's just that a Cayman or Boxster driver may well get satisfaction from a car they can afford to drive every day, and for longer on a tank.
People who buys sports cars tend to not care about fuel economy. :-)

Uh, those weren't the 18-way powered seats, those were the 2-way manual Sport Seats Plus in the Boxster.

Thecrazeecow congrats on the 986, enjoy! I’ve had my since 2000 and still awesome. Its in my garage right next to my 2018 718 GTS oh yeah. For $10k or less why bother selling my 986? Such an underrated car!

chltmdwp Yes. 911s have too much bulk in the front and the GT3's spoiler is hideous. Only the Cayenne and 718s are impeccable. I'm actually saving up for a 2017 718 Cayman S. Used, of course.
I would recommend the 981 instead.

Sure, it's a 4 Cylinder straight. It creates 300-350 Horsepower for a 4 Cylinder engine. That isn't bad. It's already Turbocharged so why not buy a few performance parts that are good for tracks, a supercharger, and learn how to install it yourself. I wouldn't do that at all. It's about the experience and quality of the build, not always the big numbers.

The silver detail inside the Cayman's trunk looks like it would look better on a Jeep since it kind of resembles the headlights and grill of the Wrangler.

Trust me, a silver Porsche 911 Turbo would attract very little attention. Especially compared to a 458.

As far as I'm concerned there is only 2 true sports cars these days its the Corvette and Porsche both are offered in manual and both are lightweight and great on fuel just all around perfection for both.

I love Porsche but honestly at that price you should just go ahead and get a Z06.
Z06 starts $10K higher then the Boxster S, but yes it is a great car and the best coupe under $100K.

With a six and the, as is it rumoured, omission of the manual cab, it will be epic. I will save some money, I may trade in my 981S..

I can't get excited about an $80,000 sports car with a FOUR CYLINDER engine. I'm sure it's fast and drives great, but the engine doesn't sound that great, and the exhaust is WEAK. For $80,000 Porsche shouldn't be making these kinds of compromises. This took a pure sports car and made it less than pure. Put in a 2.5 liter turbo 6 if you have to, Lexus has a 2.5 6 in their IS 250. Or bring back the old natural six, it was fabulous! Good review though.
The Porsche 356, 912, 914, 944 Turbo and 968 all had four cylinder engines, and they were all priced very high compared to Corvettes or Jaguars. What's the big deal? It's just traditional Porsche pricing.

Incredible ?By what standard? Incredible expensive for sure. So easy to make power in turbo these day, only interesting about these engine is the new "ALS" system in these car. Well new Ford use the technology too. Do you know back to 80s-90s how much HP JDM turbo cars are making? EVO FQ440? 2.0 NA 220 HP is incredible, with turbo nothing is impressive from OEM by today's standard. By the way, A45 AMG make 50 HP more and only 2.0l and it was released like three years ago. Focus RS? All the 2.0 performance car make 310+? You are from stone age right. $80k for a 4 cylinder is a joke. "Turbo are power cheater"-- Motortrend whatever episode it was shown.
You ever heard of a beautiful and yet functionally engineered car? Apparently not. 350 horses from a 2.5 Liter is crazy. Also, you can customize the engine with a supercharger to make it a twincharged engine.
I am sure this four cylinder can beat your 6 cylinder car. Hence the price

718 sales are way down because of their gutless sound. People are scooping up the well optioned final years of the flat 6 engines. If this guy thinks this car sounds glorious he needs shock treatment.

A modern sportcars has to accelerate 0-60 in the 3 sec range. 5 secs would've been a rip off in 1975. Porsche is no longer building remotely competive cars. Simply put, this is horrendous slow AF garbage.
