@@kaleknikker123 The 944 is an amazing car and quite underrated! Definitely one of the best Porsches ever made and it’s an affordable collectors car too! But the reason why I said the Boxster 986 as the car that saved Porsche was because I was talking about a specific time in the 90s where there was a big recession and at the time Bugatti went bust and would not return till 10 years after but the 986 was what saved Porsche at that time as an affordable sports car and it did so well that they couldn’t keep up with demand now we have the Cayenne and Macan as I would say the best SUV and crossover on the market and that’s helping Porsche make the Speedster, GT3, GT4, GT2, Panamera, and Taycan and they’re still going to keep on making sports cars! Cheers!
I think the orignal boxster is more fun to drive than the new one. Its small size is what gives it that exciting Gokart feel. The smaller engine means you can really rev it out, on the streets.
Seeing them next to each other i was actually shocked to see how much he has grown. At least optically i have to say. The numbers tell a different story, but it looks SO MUCH bigger...at least to me.
Thanks you Mr. Leno for bringing attention to a really underrated car. I am still in love with my 01. As hard as it may be to believe, the car on the left is also a dynamite car. I wish Mr. Leno would taken that for a spin. 1st gen Boxster may be the best sports car for the money one can buy. Buy the nicest with service history you can find, well worth the extra money. If you want to do a little Florida rally Mr. Leno, bring the 99 down and we will do a rollout.
It's not usually fixed - I can't comment on the latest model. You can still see a small latch in the video right after. Usually can push it and the deflector pops.
My wife and I love our 2006 Boxster S. We've had it five years, now. We take it on nice long road trips and we try to find new and fun roads. The Ozarks, Smokies, Black Hills, Sierras, etc... It is a joy to drive, reasonably comfortable for a couple of sixty somethings, and never disappoints when we need to pass a motorhome in the mountains.
The 4.0 flat 6 naturally aspirated engine with manual transmission Porsche , is an absolute Killer. Caymans and Boxsters with this engine will be very desirable now and especially into the future.
Have had four 911s and two boxsters the last 25 years. The 2005 boxster S was my favorite of all of them. Would be nice if people would stop randomly asking “didn’t get the 911?” When I got out of the car every so often. Oh well.

All enjoyed it on tracks with the Porsche Club, including the youngest, my daughter. Thanks again for the show, great brand great car. Porsche passion perfected power to play every single day. Best value for money.
Always loved the Boxster. Such a clean , no nonsense design. I could never work out why they got a rep for being a woman's car etc. There are a few Porsche's that to me look a bit "ugly". The Panamera , Cayenne , Macan and Taycan don't do a thing for me. But these Boxster's, 911's, Spyder and Cayman's are beautiful !
Anyone who has never driven one and describes it as such, is clueless. Mine is 21 years old and will still outhandle many modern cars. It's a joy to drive.
It's the 911 crowd that like to shout down the boxsters. It's a different car from the 911 and they shouldn't be compared. I had a 2010 boxster I loved it and will own another
I believe Jay’s mood as the drive unfolds tells you all you need to know, its a true Porsche, brilliantly designed, brilliantly executed, bringing tremendous pleasure those who appreciate what a superb sports car should be. A car that delights more and more as you spend more time with it. I get my 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 in May and am excited when I think about all the drives I’ll take with it here in the southwest.
@@chesspiece81 ok thats cool. I was lucky enough to get the chance to drive both Cayman S and Boxster 2.7 of the 987 generation. So i realy like how the Boxster drives and the fact it is a smaller and more youthfull car than the 911.
CT you are sounding a bit narrow minded. The cars you like are all good but none on them are the fasted/best track cars ever. WRX’s EVO’s M3’s GT3 are all as good or better. The AMG GTR was fastest rwd car around the N’ring until the GT3 RS was quicker. Not an RX8. So shhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Me too. We here watchin Leno to see all cars. I wanted to see both featured cars in the same detail. The video could still have been a sales pitch for the new car, just with some Porsche history mixed in too. There's a lot of history wrapped up in the original Boxster, a car that arguably kept Porsche around today.
This is the most interesting video to me as Jay always refers to his Porsche GT as the gold standard of all cars ever made and to hear his views and opinions on the other vehicles in the Porsche lineup is interesting.
986s really are affordable. Jay’s pricing is high (perhaps it’s LA pricing). I bought a driver quality 2000 Boxster for my son several years ago for $7K. Among Porsches, Boxsters are probably the best bang for the buck.
@@markm0000 996s are in fact going up in price - keep your eye on the PCA listings or Bring A Trailer. I think the stigma against the 996 has dissipated. When the 914 came out, people said it wasn’t a Porsche. When the 924 came out, people said it wasn’t a Porsche. When the 964 came out, people said it didn’t belong in the Porsche’s heritage. This phenomenon is par for the course.
As 911 prices have gone absolutely nuts over the last couple of years, more people are looking at Boxsters as a way to get into a Porsche. And they won't regret it, it's a great car.
@@HeyhitmeBAM i wasn't actually talking about buying new. I meant owning a Porsche, used or new. A 99 911 (996) in good shape is around $35K. A 99 Boxster (986) is about $8k. The ones I've seen on Craigs are actually manual [some autos as well]. I know because I was looking at picking one up.
My first Porsche was a 1997 Boxster. Great evolution. I owned 3 newer models, and i could get 2 sets of golf clubs in all of them. I have subsequently owned a GT3, a GT3 RS, and just bought a 911 Turbo S. Amazing car. Love it.
Thank you for hearing this input from a 911 owner. Been looking for a 986 to start but somewhat been hesitant with the love/hate I'll get from 911 owners. Eventually I'll hope to get one
Timelessness, which most Porsches display, must be one of the most important qualities! For something to get better, and more valued, with time, must be the most elusive, desirable quality.
986 has aged incredibly. It’s a true classic. I have an 85 911 and figured my 2003 986 S would leave me anonymous. Nope. Just as many folks shout ‘great car’ but they just younger than the 911 fans
Not sure where everyone is giving these a bad wrap for maintaince on these cars. This has not only been the most reliable car I've ever owned, but also the easiest to work on

Thanks for the details on that though man. Cheers.
As a 17 yr old my summer job was hand delivering new porches, Audi, volx wagon to customers. It was freakin awesome!! The Porsche 928 was my fav then. Took it up with the owners son to 160 & scared me how smooth and perfect it seemed back then. To say I love those porches / Audi too is on point. They are incredible. Period.
Toyota actually helped Porsche be cost effective with their supply chain. The Boxster model actually was their savior when they were about to go bankrupt, similar to how the Ipod saved Apple in way.
Just sold my 99 Porsche boxster with 47,000 miles and I bought it from the original owner.....Yeah I know I'm regretting it already......It was a very sweet sports car and I had a lot of fun with it.
And yet the original prototype Boxster still looks so much better than any of the production models. It was perhaps not the most practical, but it was a much prettier car
It’s great to see Jay enjoying a Boxster. Here in the UK I daily drove a Soeed Yellow 2000 Boxster S manual with 90,000 miles on it for 4 years. It was a joy to own. Not 1 thing went wrong on it and when I came to sell it it sold in just 1 day for just £100 less than I paid for it 4 years earlier. The people that hate of them are the people that’s never driver then. Redlining that 3.2 flat 6 through the gears was an amazing sound
Mine is 10 years old this year. Best car I’ve ever owned! It fits TWO sets of golf clubs in the rear and a push cart in the front trunk. I guess the 987 chassis has a bigger trunk than the current model.

You can get two full sets of clubs, two collapsible folding golf bags, shoes and rain gear in the rear compartment without any trouble. We've done it many times. What a way to travel!
Thanks for another great video Jay. I was at the 1997 launch in Phoenix as a Porsche employee. I can't believe it's been 25 years. One bit of information for you; you wondered if Porsche began today if they would have started with mid-engine. They did in 1948! The 356-A was mid engined. They only switched to rear engine for the 911 to provide rear seats for sales potential. All the dedicated race cars have been mid engined since. Oh and your guest never answered your drag coef question. The original boxster was very low @ .31.
I have a 2020 Cayman 718 GT4, 2014 Cayman S, and a 1999 Boxster with factory hardtop, Love every generation of the mid engined Porsches. My first Porsche was a 1976 914. I never dreamed that when I grew up I’d own 3 super-modern 914s.
Funny how the sales guy did not actually answer Jay' s question about the old model looking more aerodynamic. Guess that simply means that it is and he's not allowed to admit it.
Guarantee the 718 is more aerodynamic than the original with flat bottom undercarriage, things like that. But the 718 also adds more effective downforce which creates drag. So it depends on you measure it.
Dear Mr Leno, I've enjoyed many of your garage videos very much. Your sharing of knowledge and details, the time and perfection in care and restoration, the experience of hearing and seeing them on the road. I've heard you talk about a "proper gear box". My mother who recently passed at 96 was a huge fan of yours and I never managed to get her to one of your shows which she would have been thrilled over. Her cousin, Carl Gardella, who also passed was an ultimate car guy, an ace mechanic, held a boat racing record as mechanic for woman driver. I believe he also was into Chords, and sold custom parts for them. Anyway, I'm writing because I lost my viginity, meaning I bought my first 5 speed manual, a 20 year old Porsche Boxster. F'n transmission is giving me headaches! Well I will keep practicing, it's the lights and stops where I stall it. On the road it's wonderful. It is the first car that I enjoy as much as a motorcycle. Just wish I had the automatic! Thanks a lot. hahaha. Thank you for giving my mom years of enjoyment from the Tonight Show to finish up her day.
Naturally aspirated, manual transmission (with a stick), analogue gauges, rear-wheel drive, mid-engine. A modern car with "nostalgic" elements. Good value, too. Almost perfect!
Jay my first Porsche was an 07 Boxster S which I bought while in a golfing trip to South Carolina. I returned with the car to Canada. I had the care for a few years then sold it for what I paid for it. I loved it so much I am now driving my 3rd Porsche which is a 2020 718 Spyder. What a wonderful car. My car is now garaged until the spring. Anyway take care Jay and keep up your great work.
As a 718 owner, I can agree with Jay on every point with the Boxster and Cayman mid-engine lineup. If you’re a driver and want the best driving experience, get the Boxster or the Cayman. If you want to impress the locals and take your significant other out to dinner, get a 911.
Thanks, for sharing this with all us gearheads, love to listen to your videos while working on whatever orphan tractor, car, or motorcycle that I feel needs to be resurrected, very much appreciated, thanks again...Irish Mike...
Great to see Jay in the Boxster thanks! Was waiting to see him driving the original 986 as wel. I drove a silver on black for 20 years and now drive the 718 and 987 all really great cars to drive and reasonable to maintain.
I have a first generation boxster that has been my daily driver car for over 10 years now. Surprisingly, the value has been going up lately. It's a great car, but even basic maintenance is definitely not cheap.
@@insayn7995 as long as you only ever need space for one passenger and don't need to carry much. I just took my RS-60 Spyder on a fairly long road trip (probably 3k miles) and it performed flawlessly, but I noticed that when I got further from the coast, there were 0 Porsches. Like, I did not see a single one after I got out of Maryland, so that could be an issue if you live somewhere where a dealership is your only repair option, because from what I've seen their prices seem to be about 3x that of a reputable repair shop, even on things like oil changes. Lighter and more fun than a big 911. I'll keep my Boxster 981 S forever. Great gear box, light clutch, 6 cylinders, no turbo lag!!!, instant smooth linear power that makes you always want to drive fast.
I absolutely adore the Boxster. My BMW Z3 made me fall in love with lightweight roadsters and the Boxster feels like the ultimate version of that formula. A 987 or 981 GTS is the goal right now.
At 62 years old, I’ve owned and built Mustangs, Harley Davidsons, and T-Bucket roadsters. Never had an interest in the Porsche. I bought my first Boxster last year. It’s an ‘04 5 speed. I feel like a million bucks when I drive it. I’m definitely hooked on Porsche !
Less is more. The Boxster is not inferior to the 911, it just has different values, having the most power not being one of them. Some of us would rather not play the power game, and instead, concentrate on the driving. This Boxster is such an amazing car, to lust after more (it has what, 400hp?) seems kind of greedy!
I love the 986 Boxster. I don't own one, I have a 996 911. But the existence of a much cheaper car that shares so many parts is great for the availability of used spares, and the price of new ones!
I sold my 1991 911 (964) targa and replaced it with a 2014 Boxster S last year. Don’t miss the 911 at all. Surprisingly, the 2014 Boxster is bigger than the 964 in every dimension except weight. 6” wider, 8” longer wheel base, 66 more hp. Total fun to drive.
I love while taking the car for a drive Jay mentions "Build Quality" then they pan to a rear view and one of the mesh grills in the roll-over bar has Fallen out 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That mesh grill that was leaning loose behind his head held on for the longest time, but eventually disappeared. Probably fell down behind the seat, but may have blown out onto the road somewhere. No doubt a horribly, unnecessarily expensive replacement! Side comment - still love my 2001 Boxster (23 years later at this writing).
The first Boxter was the car that made me fall in love with cars when I saw it on the cover of a magazine back in the late 90's. The new one is beautiful.

I’ve gotta say that my Boxster has been the most enjoyable car I have ever driven, and I’ve driven a lot of cars. I’ve compared the mid engine vs rear engine cars on the Porsche track and honestly prefer the mid engine. The only reason to buy a 911 over the Boxster/Cayman is ego.
Totally agree! I’m 70 and have owned and driven many cars. Nothing like the Boxster. An S2000 is close but relatively gutless by comparison unless you compare to an older Boxster.
Combine the weather with the topic, and this is one of those videos that I wish I could ride around with Jay... I had the first original Boxster in Texas and already owned a couple 911 Turbos, and have owned many 911 Turbos since, but there aren't many cars that people you meet on the street got as much fun out of as the original Boxster. I had a new Testarossa at the time, and they were neck and neck as far as people's enjoyment. I've never owned a 911 Turbo that anyone gave a second look at. The Boxster changed it all...
Jay I'm 64 years old with a 70 Porsche 914 6 in the garage so I couldn't wait for the 97 Boxster to arrive and get in and drive it but I was not impressed until the 01 Boxster S that I bought at a car auction with a little damage I would drive that car two hours to San Diego and back just to have fun I can't wait for this car to be used and I'll get 1 down the road thanks J for your great work
I have the 2013 981 Boxster S and really enjoy it. It has more power than my driving skills so I think it is plenty powerful enough. A fun car. One point on the video that I would question is I wonder if the trunk on the Boxster 25 is of a different size. I routinely fit my set of golf clubs in my trunk, all clubs in the bag except the driver, which is out of the bag and sitting on the floor of the trunk. My golf cart fits very well in the frunk with room to spare. So golfers need not be concerned, at least not with the 981. 😊
I just got a 2002 986 Boxster and I'm impressed if not amazed at the power it has. The Boxster S of that generation was even faster and yours probably faster still. The speedo jumps around, 60 80..., I got into my sentra and pressed the gas and the engine was making all kinds of noise but the speedo was like stuck!
Really enjoyed this video. I’ve owned one of each Boxster from the first 2.5, 2x 987s, a 9881 and I just collected a 718 Spyder. They are fabulous cars. And I also own a very special 911 so it’s not just people who ‘can’t afford’ a 911 who buy these cars.

Cheers!
I’ve had a 911 and a Boxster. The Boxster is hands down more fun to drive.
I think the orignal boxster is more fun to drive than the new one. Its small size is what gives it that exciting Gokart feel. The smaller engine means you can really rev it out, on the streets.

I've actually had a Porsche but I did not know (until today) that's why those engines were called "boxers". Thanks Jay!
The original boxster is extremely underrated. Its more fun to drive that the 911 of that time.
The 996 is another underrated car.
The smirk he had at 16:32 after saying it revs almost to 8 grand.. you can tell he loves it
Really enjoyed this video. I’ve owned one of each Boxster from the first 2.5, 2x 987s, a 9881 and I just collected a 718 Spyder. They are fabulous cars. And I also own a very special 911 so it’s not just people who ‘can’t afford’ a 911 who buy these cars.
Did u have the turbo 718, the NA version had a lovely sounding engine, we had one in 19’.
