    While I definitely think loving others is crucial and should be a priority, I think at least part of the "love yourself" movement in Christian circles is based in battling insecurity and having confidence as strong Godly women, choosing to love yourself and have peace with the woman God made you to be instead of comparing yourself to others. If women are confident and secure in who they are as daughters of God, they are more enabled to love and care for others. Thanks for your videos!

      @samanthajeansch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Abigail Miller you can love yourself by first Loving God, He made us and designed us to serve and obedience (such a derogatory term in the English language) is a way of Love. Jesus Himself says that the disciples were His friends because they followed Him and His commands. It’s simply Him guiding us towards what we were made to do!
      I think what they were getting at was the intention of only focusing on yourself, or taking long periods of only thinking of yourself. As humans it’s so easy to get stuck, we all struggle with selfishness. However, the Bible says over and over to rest, to not worry, that the Lord restores our souls, to worship God but honoring our bodies etc. Which are all ways that we can serve God by properly caring for our bodies. Loving God first sets it all in motion and the enemy can get tricky with our culture and perspective at times! It’s not a completely bad sentiment, but they were talking about the grey areas that come with it. :)

    • @erikadebelen3052
      @erikadebelen3052 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Totally agree with this. Of course priority is loving God first, and loving yourself - i.e. accepting how God made you to be and recognizing that He made you wonderfully no matter what - is secondary but also important.. Because if we don't love ourselves, how can we fully extend love to others as well?

    • @aubreybeazley35
      @aubreybeazley35 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Abigail Miller although I do agree with the loving yourself to battle insecurities, I do believe that you should give all you cares and burdens and failures and flaws to God bc He holds them and tells you that you are beautiful bc He made you, in the likeness of His own image. Above all, you should love only Jesus until the day you're married then you should love your spouse. But loving the Lord doesn't need to decrease or go away after marriage, rather it should thrive and grow and be free. Bottom line, if a man or a women is in love with the Lord and has that deep spiritual love, than you will be able love others. Its a commandment in the Bible to love your neighbor as yourself (James 2:8) and jumping backwards to Hebrews 13:1 Paul says "Let brotherly love continue " which we should do bc Jesus commanded it. But the biggest thing that strives me to disagree is found in Matthew 22:36-38 which reads;
      "Teacher, which is the greatest of these commandment in the law?" And He said to them, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment."
      And honestly, it doesn't matter what you think of yourself, if you trust God, He will and already has a plan for you. He knows your heart so that's all that matters. And one day a great Christian man will come into your life bc God put him there for you. Because He loves you.

    Another thing that I believe is important to keep in mind is while it's tempting to know whether or not someone likes you back, it will be eventually revealed to you with time. If he likes you and wants to pursue you, he will do that. If he doesn't, then he won't. It's important to be patient :)

      I understand what they say about self-love in the way the world encourages it, but you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak. "Love your neighbor as you love yourself"... that's a biblical command. (Leviticus 19:18, Mark 12:30-31)

  • @KristinaMassa17

    I think loving yourself isnt supposed to be all about you. Social media has taken it too far beyond its meaning. It's supposed to be respecting yourself and learning to treat your body like a temple instead of hurting it. Quitting an addiction is self love. Getting help for trauma is self love. Getting out of the house so you can see the sun despite feeling depressed is self love. And if you think about it, all of these things require sacrifice to an extent. Self OBSESSION is the issue. I think that's what you're talking about.

    I prayed for my future husband. For the longest time I believed that I would never meet anyone who would love me enough to marry me. But God was faithful and He brought the best man into my life. I did pray for specifics about the guy, but wasn't specific enough. E.g. I wanted a medical doctor and God gave me a doctor of political science because I asked for a doctor because I love biology LOL LOL LOL, just don't have the live and patience for meds school. God has a sense of humor So yes be specific when you ask God for something. Ask and you shall receive. But remember you shall receive what God knows is best for you. He has your best interest at heart.

    I totally understand you guys but Self Love , well my interpretation, is that Jesus said "Love the Lord your God..." and He also said , " Love others as you love yourself. " Quite often people love people MORE THAN they love themselves but nooo we have to Love them as we love ourselves so self love is important, and most importantly Loving God first and the beauty of that is that God wants to Love you as well.

    • @ShortGirlsClimbCounters
      @ShortGirlsClimbCounters 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, actually that implies that we already always put ourself first - as we do - and to be a little more self forgetful and to love and look after our neighbors as we already do ourselves. Those who hate themselves are the most self focused - adding more focus onto ourselves is not healthy. My own personal story is a testament to that. I have become much more confident and happy once I stopped trying to love myself.

      I recently found out that loving my friends brought joy and peace and they in turn reciprocated this love unlike when I tried to love myself, I became miserable and lonely because I was not giving out much love 🤷🏽‍♀️ so my advice is self love can’t be defined for you. So define that on your own .

    Stay focused on Christ and what He has for you while you're single. If you stay in God's will and fall in love with Him first, He will bring you to who Has appointed for you. Like Paul says, "The unmarried woman cares for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married cares for the things of the world, how she may please her husband." (1 Cor. 7:34) So be careful to not jump the gun and start caring for the things to your husband if you're not married yet, but also remember that the virtuous woman does her husband good ALL the days of her life - including her single years.

    I find there's alot of good wisdom in this video. Some of it hard to take, the thoughts on women loving themselves can be taken the wrong way. From what I understand loving yourself is okay when it comes to accepting who you are, but you also lay down your life for Christ and pick up your cross each day. The love yourself movement takes loving yourself beyond simply loving who you are and makes you a priority over all other things, which I think is what they were talking about.
    Something I read yesterday in my Bible study came to mind when I watched this. Faith unchallenged is faith stifled. We will never grow in faith if we are never challenged in our faith and feel we know everything there is to know.
    You guys challenge us, which is good. And I thank you for that.
    Keep doing what you're doing, you're doing great.

      Beautiful comment. Because the pillar goal of the self-love movement is supporting women a lot of people don't see how it could go wrong. Good intentions do not always mean good methods and outcomes. However, it can not be underestimated when talking about the self-love movement how hard this society is on a women's self-esteem.

    I don’t understand how the love yourself movement is negative. It’s a movement that is embracing women to be independent and encourages them to find self confidence, worth, and love within themselves and through Christ, not through the word of man.
    I also think the whole part about women needing to change they’re actions and way of life to help prevent impure thoughts of their significant other is complete nonsense. If he/she is having impure thoughts that they believe are wrong then they need to find it within themselves to conquer those thoughts, not expect the other person to change their way of life to meet their needs or standards.
    I fully believe that this channel and your guys mission is meant to be positive and a vessel for the word of God, but from the few videos I have watched it comes across in a condescending and ignorant way.
    This is just solely my opinion that I wanted to put out there. Not meant to be hateful in any way. If you do happen to read this I would love to chat more about this because I do not want to be misinterpreting your message as you probably don’t want your viewers to be either!
    God bless you all!❤️

    • @Grace-rh4em
      @Grace-rh4em 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree. Plus, we need to learn to encourage ourselves and others, not just hear it from men. Not all of us are called to marriage and relationships so we need to learn how to build ourselves up, discover our own identity and identity in God. I understand that many women have taken it a bit too far. Many make it seem as a selfish, ungodly thing, but its not the case for everyone. Many many people need to realize its okey to take care of yourself. That its alright to have a self care day. It may seem unbelievable but there are people who need to learn how to take care of themselves. I think that in the Christian community women are told to be Godly women and trust in the Lord, but marriage is such a big part of it all that we also get taught to wait and prepare for our future husbands, so much so that we begin living or molding our lives for someone that may not even be there yet. I personally struggled with that for a long time, only recently did I finally realize that I can't live or mold my life for a man I don't know. I need to see my own beauty, and not worry about what others think. Its only Gods opinion, not man's.I hope that makes sense. Like I said, I agree, and I just wanted to add a little extra. 💜

    • @thehappyelephant8868
      @thehappyelephant8868 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think the whole debate over the self-love movement in this video comes down to the use of vocabulary and I believe that the two sides don't truly disagree. They were talking about the Christian sacrificial love which is what love really is and this love can never be given to oneself. However, the self-love movement while still using the word love is talking about appreciation for oneself (Which is super, super important! And why I do think that the self-love movement is a positive thing. God created us with purpose. God loves us and we should appreciate ourselves for being His amazing and beautiful creation). What their concern was is that some people might use this movement to fill a gap in their life from not receiving love from other people and not sharing in a relationship with God. This is concerning because it only covers the problem and doesn't fix it. The Christian response should be not to condemn the self-love movement but to show love to other people.

    I see his point about the view point of social media taking self love to an unrealistic measure, especially if it’s promoting selfishness! However I do have to say there are (as in most cases) many definitions besides the one mentioned in this video, of what self love can look like for a woman- as the other ladies mentioned:)
    For me personally, that journey was one of developing a stronger sense of self awareness, which ultimately promotes a healthier foundation for all my relationships. Keep up the great work, your making us all think about what matters most!!

    "It comes from men who cannot love their women well" This is true. From my experience and observing and caring for many young women... as a woman, we're often socialized for us to be very self-sacrificing and it's very easy for us to do so... but especially in the church this ends up to our detriment and we don't know how to take care of ourselves. For whatever reason, it's become a social trend for women to hate themselves, then men are socialized to treat women poorly in regular media... that's where I see the Love Yourself movement comes from. It is more about knowing yourself and keeping your boundaries rather than just lavishing yourself with luxuries in the name of "self-love". Hope that helps you guys have a heart for people going through that journey 😁

    "Love others as yourself" is a command. However, what if you don't love yourself? For years, I put everybody else first and myself last. Work, work, work.
    It wasn't until I started self caring and pouring into myself that I was able to fully love others. When I started honoring myself, I was able to actually love others from a place of abundance and it was no longer a burden but a joy to put myself aside for others.

    I battled self hatred for a really long time, and actually learning to love myself was one of the first steps to being able to love others better! Especially since we’re called to love our neighbours as ourselves (Mark 12:31 🙌🏼). Not in a self-focused way, but by seeing ourselves the way God sees us. That’s just been my revelation with it 🙂 but I see what you guys meant here. Anyways, love all your videos - they’re super fun and wise! x

    I love the depth of the conversation with self love. Keep up the honest conversation. It can be a substitution as you said or also a distorted reversal of God's order. To love God and lose yourself, you find truth and a steadfast identity. To self love you perpetuate the "me" nature and base it on an inconsistent and limited human. We miss out on the richer promise and cheat ourselves from God.

    I loved this video, hands down. The part about the way a women or young lady should dress. Now a days the world gets us women to think that just a little more skin here or there is ok and that it's fine if something is too tight. My mom and grandma took me to the mall when I was 12 years old and they asked me to pick out a shirt that was a smaller size than what i wear along with a perfect fitting one and I did that with shorts, dresses, skirts, jeans and even swimsuits. I didn't know at the time why or what they were doing this for, until I found the shorts to be too short and the shirt too tight. When they looked at me they asked how I felt and I told them that I felt too open. And they said that if a women shows this or that they are causing distractions. Distracting men. Worldly men pursue a woman's body weather he will admit it or not. Some more or less than others but men and women are both very lustful. I believe that Christian women should be the first to say no when they are tempered into buying a lower shirt or tighter leggings because taking care of our bodies is as simple as that. If you don't like that idea, where undershirts and spandex to cover yourself more for security. If you love your body and you're not ashamed whatsoever about it, then I applaud you! I just think that if you are confident, that you would be able to hold yourself back from being like the world and accept modesty. Tip for men and women, if you are innocent to all things of the opposite sex, they find that as attractive. Thanks again for the video Paul and Megan!

    Hey
    ....so I do get and appreciate what is being said about sacrificial love and yes the self love movement has its extremes however I do believe self love is verry important!!! Love your neighbor as you love yourself....to me this scripture touches on what i think is a principle of what I would like to call "inside out", there's something that has to happen within us that then influences that which extends out of us or from us.

  • @jordan473
    @jordan473 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think when people talk about self-love, there is a healthy balance. It IS important to love yourself, to love who God made you, to not constantly compare yourself. It is a beautiful thing because once someone learns to love themselves, they can then love others better and step into their purpose even more. It is absolutely important to focus on others and always practice sacrificial love. But if a girl does not love who she is, it is easy to slip into depressive thoughts, searching for acceptance from other people, experiencing burnout from constantly focusing on others and neglecting your own needs.

    Great video guys! I think that the trend of loving yourself is important to talk about. I just wanted to add one thing. For women a lot of times we date guys of potential or dudes that did not love us in the right way (which is Christ’s way) so we walk away from those experiences saying ok I won’t let that to ever happen to me again and we get into self care mode. This mode as a Christian woman should look like I’m going to be celibate, single, and consecrated (which means being set apart) so that God can truly teach me and show me his love. Once we get to the point of that time of surrender and submission to God then he is able to do more in our lives. Self care or self love shouldn’t be about us ladies at the end of the day. It should be about us humbling ourselves so that we can get back into alignment with what God’s original plan is for us to do. Sometimes we get off course and date the wrong dude but what’s awesome is that we have grace and mercy to get back up again and to love ourselves by getting back with God in all of our ways and he will direct our path.

    Love your neighbor as thyself..... it's in the bible! Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
    It is easy to become your own worst critic, to feel impatient with your own personal growth, to envy others because you feel like you're missing something they have. Self-love isn't pride: it's a God-given instinct that we're born with, that allows us to function as human beings. If I love myself, I value my health, I value my relationships, I value my time. And since God loves us, and He lives in us, then naturally we will start to feel love for ourselves as he does. I would even say that not loving yourself in a healthy way can contribute to anxiety and depression.
    Love IS sacrifice. For example, I abstain from sin even though it might feel good, because I value myself; I won't eat unhealthy foods (sacrifice) because I recognize that I am a stewardess of my body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit. It also means that since I treat myself this way, I will also exhibit the same unconditional love to others. If I feel like I am undeserving and overall just trash, chances are I'll be too wrapped up in self-pity to be of any service to others. Sacrifice for love should be towards oneself, and also towards others. I can help others in need because I know that I have access to an endless fountain of love and life, that doesn't just help me but also overflows to help others.
    Just my two cents, God bless.
    (p.s. self-love SHOULD NOT be based around personal appearance or accomplishments. Then it just becomes vanity :/).

      I love this! I was scrolling through the comments hoping that someone had said this. I think there was a focus here on some people's misunderstanding of what it truly means to love yourself. As is mentioned in the video, love is sacrifice. Self love comes in the way you treat your soul and body--- in saying no to things that you want at that instant because you know that they are not the best for you in the long run. This teaches self mastery and is the foundation for being able to love others!

    I think my way of loving myself is just simply shifting your energy on someone else and knowing that they're not the right one. Bc ppl think it's bc there's something abt them n it kind of makes it as if the world revolves around them n they would retreat to the "idea" of focusing in yourself more and too often. It doesn't mean to focus on yourself so much as if someone would to take advantage of you, how you love yourself PROPERLY TO ME, is by changing your perspective on you treat others that can change the energy and thoughts you would have to give out in a better way.and what you put on ur mind n heal in ur own way. Thats best for u. Don't go to insta searching for answers. You know what's best to u and u just got to give ur mind a break from the mdedia:) I think that's truly helped me so far. Have your own ways n ik u would be far more happier in life😇❤like I learned a lot from my experience n it's all abt that. But when I started using the media too much, my authentic way of seeing the world keeps shifting n im lost at this point. After watching this, I feel like wow I actually found what I came for. Nothing is inevitable n some are not. All u need is:Never stop learning n growing....

    Yes, “self love” is very important if you don’t love yourself first, how are you healthy enough to love anyone else. Also “boundaries” a woman should also should have a healthy set of personal boundaries otherwise she can’t manage in any situation. Dealing in work relationships, family and especially in a romantic relationship. I do agree if a man is interested he will make it known. So relax know yourself, be yourself and if it’s meant to be it will happen.

    On the topic of love yourself - I think it’s a fine line to cross as in the bible we are called to love and serve others graciously as Christ has called us to do so but it also right and fitting to honour yourself as we are a temple of the living God, he dwells in us and if you are not properly looking after and loving yourself how can you to the best of your ability to go out and serve others in the way Christ has called us to if our hearts and minds aren’t fully being looked after by ourselves in a manner that is fitting to please the Lord?

    • @samanthajeansch
      @samanthajeansch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Abby Cole it is right to both care for yourself and serve! The Bible calls us to both. Caring as in honoring our bodies, seeking Him, laying our worries at His feet. It truly is a beautiful surrender that gives us more life than we could have on our own trying to fill our selves up! I don’t think it’s so much a fine line as a mishap with translation or understanding majority of the time. In a world tugging at us from all sides 24/7, it’s important to remember we are called to focus first and foremost on the Lord and to love Him first! He knit us together and loves us deeply and unconditionally.
      It’s a joyful serving, not the way the world can often misconstrue the perception of serving. It’s beautiful!

I am so confused as to what Jonny said about loving yourself, though...I was told that if I don't love myself first, I can't ever get into a relationship because I would only be looking for someone to complete me, which is impossible because, well, only God can do that. Allowing God to pour into you gives you the fullness and feeling of being loved you crave and desire, and attempting to care for yourself and love yourself to the full extent that you innately desire is always going to be unsatisfactory.
      You can “love yourself” by living the way you were made to live: being poured into by God (Before we loved He loved us 1 John) allowing Him to lead you (Psalm 23) and serving Him and others (which isn’t boring! Serving is such a derogatory term now. Serving is beautiful and full of joy when your heart is positioned towards Him).
      Honor the Lord by being loving toward your body, mind, and soul and trusting Him (all things the Bible says) and you will truly feel loved and in some way “love yourself” by first Loving God.

    • @thehappyelephant8868
      @thehappyelephant8868 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, this is partly do to a mismatch of vocabulary. From a Christian perspective, love is a gift given to other peple and God; we can never really "love" ourselves. The problem with the self-love movement (though there is a lot of positive aspects to it as well) is that it misunderstands and undervalues the meaning of love. That love is some feeling of affection or appreciation (which we should feel for ourselves) as opposed to the sacrificial love that this video spoke of. A potential problem with self-"love" is that it can (with certain misunderstanding and interpretation) lead to self-absorption and denial of any kind of personal flaw (which is dishonest to oneself and problematic). The Christian response to this is that we know that we are made in the image and likeness of God and that He loves us. Because He so carefully created and loves us and has a purpose for us we should then appreciate ourselves as His wonderful creation.

  • @camiphillips3711
    @camiphillips3711 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’d like to add to the whole “Love yourself” movement and say that it is important to take care of yourself and love yourself. However, I think that it is extremely important to clarify what that looks like for a Christian. To love yourself well, as a Christian, you have to love yourself through the lens of God’s grace and God’s love for you. I believe that it is so very important to be confident in the love that God has for you before you search for love from yourself or others. Johnny, your point is valid: we need to love others better. But as Christians, it is more important that we are confident in the fact that God has loved us first and that his love is the only love that will satisfy our desire to be loved. The “Self-Love” movement is not one created by God. Jesus told us to “Love your neighbors as yourself.” So instead of only thinking about “I need to love myself,” how about we think about “how can I love others better?” But I want to give a WARNING! The love that comes from others (or yourself) is not one that will last forever and ever. That love is not perfect, and it will not satisfy your hunger for love. Only God’s love can quench the thirst that you have to be loved and to love someone. Johnny, hat’s just my point that I would like to add to your pet peeve of the Self Love Movement.

  • @christalpotter8315

    Hey, guys. I think your intentions are so pure in trying to encourage and instill positive values in godly relationships. It's exciting to discover that there are other people out there who are passionate about seeking God and honoring Him as we engage in those relationships. So, first off, thank you. I just wanted to touch on the subject of "self love". I agree sometimes movements can cross boundaries. However, as a young woman who has been delivered from OCD and an eating disorder I can truly say that God intends for His children (daughters and sons) to love who He created. It is not selfish to love yourself. In fact, as you know, Mark 12:30-31 reads, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” I used to struggle with self love because I worried it would mean I was contradicting that sacrificial love that Christ calls us to uphold. But, I realized something throughout my healing journey...if I don't love myself, how can I love my neighbor as Christ commands? When Jesus sacrificed Himself, it wasn't because He didn't have love for who He was...because He and the Father are one. He loves His Father, therefore He loved Himself (humbly, of course). Because of the love that filled His heart and Spirit, He had ample love to overflow into the many people He encountered. That is the definition of sacrificial love. He was willing to lay down His life (something of great value) to save us all, whom He loves. Therefore, a more positive perspective for all of us to take as we view this self love movement (without crossing into ego and self-absorption) is to take it for what it is to women and even men like me: Learning to love myself as a creation of God so that I can be filled with affection and gratitude that will in turn influence and impact my relationships with others. I seek to first and foremost love God and He teaches me to love myself so that I can love others well. I hope you understand I am sharing this with the pure intention to clarify something that might have been misunderstood. Again, thank you for using your platform to shine a light! God bless you all! :)

    Hmm, I found the ideas about self-love to very interesting. I would say that sometimes (at least for me) the idea of being deserving of love and loving yourself get a little bit confused. I used to be very hard on myself and I thought it was because I didn't love myself enough. Now that I can appreciate my good qualities, however, I still have a hard time accepting/trusting love from others. I'm glad that you were brave enough to say it, even if I don't necessarily agree.

    I don’t really agree with what you guys said about the love yourself movement. It doesnt stem from being self-centered but more on self-confidence. While the movement CAN be done selfishly, it has helped countless people worldwide feel secure in their own bodies after years of media and society shoving an ideal but impossible beauty standard down everyone’s throats.
    The second greatest commandment, as said by Jesus, is to love others as yourself. This commandment has a prerequisite, which is to love ourselves so that we can share this same love with others. Unfortunately, the norm nowadays is a lack of self-love, which can lead to depression, suicidal tendencies and self-harm. This is why the love yourself movement is so important.
