    That's a pretty good explanation for mule sterility, and I'll add to that:
    Mules also have an odd number of chromosomes. You see, a horse has 64 chromosomes, while donkeys have 62. That leaves mules in the middle with 63. Because it's an odd number, it can't split evenly for sexual reproduction. The video kinda touched on that with the "different deck of cards" analogy. :)
    Also on that note, the total number of recorded cases of a female mule giving birth within the past 500 years have been 60. Let that sink in: 60 in 500 years, versus millions of mules within that same time span. That's why it's just easier to say that mules are sterile, without having to explained just how miraculously rare it is for a molly (the word for a female mule) to be fertile.

      Sorry to show up 9 months late, but I am a bit confused as to why hybrids such as Pomarine Jaegers and Lonicera flys are still able to breed like normal. I doubt that rare thing that happens to mules is happening every time the Jeager or the fly breeds.

      yeah, there's lots of hypotheses about hybrid male sterility. this video, i think, focuses on one (the Dominance Hypothesis for Haldane's Rule).

    Big cat hybrids are strange because all male hybrids are sterile, while females are fertile (though they have cubs pretty infrequently). I've personally always wondered if it were possible for the descendent of a big cat hybrid of a liger for example to have perfectly normal lion descendants, and how many generations it would take before the male descendants of said hybrid to regain fertility, or if they would at all. Like how many generations would it take for that one tiger ancestor to just not matter in the bigger genetic picture.

    • @KentPetersonmoney
      @KentPetersonmoney 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's what I would like to know. I hear even the quarter mix hybird males are sterile. I'm not sure about a 1/8 or 1/16 mix. Be interesting if two 1/8 tigers,7/8 lions could reproduce. Might create a different type of lion. Might be possible for some culbs to come out with stripes.

      The looks and temperament of that foal would potentially be different than if, instead, the mule's horse mother mated with that same stallion and had a foal with the exact same DNA.
      I just looked up "hinny" because I remembered that being mentioned in a book I once read as somehow related to donkeys and mules, but didn't remember how. Well, mules come from a male donkey and a female horse, hinnies come from a female donkey and a male horse, and they're worth distinguishing because not only are hinnies rarer but they also tend towards somewhat different phenotypes than mules do.
      Apparently, researchers think this is probably due to two main things: 1.) Genes from different sources being expressed differently-- meaning, I believe, genes from a male parent versus a female parent being expressed differently even if they're otherwise the same; I could be wrong though, I didn't look into it further. This, of course, doesn't apply to our two theoretical foals, who would have identical genomes from effectively the same source. 2.) Conditions in the womb-- such as, say, the size of the womb, and any differences in the hormones running through it (even the same mare could have different hormone conditions in one pregnancy than the next, but the difference between species would be much, much greater). Which certainly would apply.
      So the foal would be a horse, but might not be the horse its genetics would suggest. Given the precedent of mule versus hinny, this could wind up assigned a new name of its own.
      Of course, I'm not at all an expert. This should all be taken with a grain of salt.
      What would be really interesting would be to see if it bred true. Potentially it could... different womb size and other conditions in the resulting horse than if the mule had never been involved could lead to the same general result in the next generation, which could be stable or could get less and less over further generations.
      So, thank you KvaGram for accidentally causing this thought experiment.

    I'm curious to find out how a hybrid could sort its genes to allow for hemiclonal transmission. Could it be an instance of a sex cell being lucky and just ending up that way, or is there more to it?

      I'm not sure I agree. You're probably right in the end, but I would like to try an order of magnitude calculation of possible gametes vs. number of hybrids ever. I'm sure that the former is much much higher, but just wanted to investigate it before I check it off the list.

    • @Kram1032
      @Kram1032 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Makes me wonder how often this occurs with non-hybrids. Was it ever observed there? Given that there isn't somehow something super special about hybrid species specifically that allows for this, it ought to happen with essentially any species.

    Actually, Mules CAN have babies, and not just because of discarding the father's genes. It's just extremely rare for a mule to foal at all, let alone without discarding the father's genes. It helps to consider that if you shuffle two decks together there's always a chance of drawing a non-repeating deck. We know this is the case because modern humans have a small number of genes from other non-human species such as neanderthals. If they just discarded the genes of the father it wouldn't have been possible for the genes to cross the species barrier. Despite being difficult, occasionally the hybrids would be able to breed with each other or humans. Due to the fact that there were more humans, and that it is apparently more likely to successfully breed a hybrid with a human than another hybrid, this explains why the genes became part of the common gene pool for all of humanity.
    To be more specific, only one mule family was genetically tested in 2007 and only because the mule gave birth to a foal not once, but twice - so akin to lightning striking twice. In that case, in that case only, it was determined to be due to “hemiclonal transmission" - or the mare ignoring the male's genes as if they didn't exist. This is the only case this has ever been observed in mammals - in just a single individual - so it's very much premature to assume it applies to all cases, just that it's a better explanation in cases of repeated births.
    Also, Chickens do have the genes for alligator teeth and sometimes are conceived with them through an Atavism, but because Chickens lost the gene required to break out of the eggs with teeth they all die when it occurs, but it's technically only one mutation away from having teeth.
    and there are fish that fly and skip on mud, so while I've never seen one climb a tree it wouldn't be impossible and might be a good place for a fish to build a nest of clay if evolutionary pressure pushes it that way.
    The only real impossibility would seem to be the flying pigs, because they would need wings and adapted bone structure.

    The reason the pet cloning industry failed is not only because it's super expensive but more importantly the animals were different. Humans can only clone an animals appearance, but it will never be possible to clone an animals soul. So to answer the q at the end, no, your cloned cat would not be the same as Yardley. It would look similar (even then with a variation or two such as a white hair that your old cat didn't have) but it would 100% behave differently. If your cat always made a cute noise and sat by the radiator, the new cat could be silent and choose to sit on the window sill etc. Yardley may have been peaceful, new cat might be crazy behaving. Add to that, the ill health and shorter life span of cloned animals. Yep it failed, and thank goodness! Humans already do incredibly negative things to animals. Human selective breeding of animals have created animals worldwide that suffer needlessly with health issues etc. Criminal, really.
