There is actually a small chance for male hyenas to become clan "kings". When the highest-ranking offspring of the matriarch is male and the matriarch dies, that male keeps that rank and therefore become a male "alpha"-hyena. For example: the Shamba clan in the Ngorongoro crater was led by a male for two years.

Thus, spotted hyenas live in matrilineal societies led by an 'alpha-female' followed by her young and all other females with their young. Below the lowest-ranking native clan member comes the highest-ranking immigrant male, followed by all other immigrant males.

Funny. I've had people describe me as a Hyena I've developed a habit of chuckling at just about everything. Whether i feel good or bad about it, years of trauma has made it the only comfortable method i have. Stuff that connects like this is just... Always fascinating. Goes to show how learning more about our world is very valuable for the sake of introspection.

Not all animals practice matriarchy (female leadership), but when they do, there have to be a certain reason attached. Male has always been known to have dominance over the females but imagine a situation where this goes otherwise. There are some certain animals which practice matriarchy, one of which are the hyenas. But why are hyenas led by females instead of males? We will get to know that as this article proceeds.
Hyenas are carnivorous mammals and they are mostly scavengers. Hyenas catch prey with their teeth rather than claws, they eat food quickly and may store it. They have calloused feet with large, blunt, nonretractable claws adapted for running and making sharp turns. They are known to be scavengers who steal food from other predators using their large group as an advantage. Hyenas of a clan live, rest, run down prey and patrol their territory together.
Hyena packs are known to take down stronger prey together. In battle, hyenas fight fiercely in large packs, supporting and defending each other. But this doesn't mean hyenas only depend on their clan for support; they can take down a gazelle or wildebeest unassisted, and even a single hyena can fight off a leopard. Some hyenas will wander off alone, rejoining the clan at a later time; others are lone hyenas, not depending on any clan. The hyena family have 4 species and they vary in size such as spotted hyena, brown, striped and Aardwolf.
The spotted hyena packs are formed both deliberately and coincidentally; hyenas will gather together to form packs, and they may also find themselves by chance. These packs are usually temporary and will eventually disperse resulting in the hyenas joining other packs, or in the case of pack leaders, form a new pack. Like i said earlier the hyena clan practice matriarchy, that is, it is led by a single female hyena.
Now to the question, why are hyenas led by females instead of males? Usually in the wild, the male animals are often larger, stronger and more aggressive than the females. But that's different in the case of hyenas. The female hyenas are larger, stronger and fiercer than males, and as a result of this they hold higher rank and are usually pack leaders.

Yeah, it is videos like this that misinform thousands of people. Pretty much everything has been debunked years before this video was posted. There is a great article from Harvard titled "Hyenas probably have more friends than you" that is a great place to start.
There is something that was unmentioned about the hyena hierarchy. You said cubs rank just below their moms, but that isn't completely true. For the leader, her cubs will rank higher than other cubs, but I don't think they will be higher than the second in command hyena. This was actually demonstrated in The National Geographic documentary Eternal Enemies made by Derek and Beverly Joubert, in that the leader hyena's daughter was higher up on the hierarchy, but after her mother died the second in command or third in command became the new ruler, and her daughter, who was old enough to hunt now, dropped down the ranking.
That documentary is one of the few that spread information about hyenas to people and introduced their behaviors to people who didn't know much about them before.
I don't think that it is untrue, the cubs of hyenas generally take the rank below their mothers which can lead to them outranking other hyenas. The hyena cub in Eternal Enemies was probably to young to inherit the position of leader, so the next highest ranking hyena took over, and lead to her rank dropping down as her mother was no longer there to reinforce it. Of course it can be more complex than that, and there is a whole lot more we can learn about the social structure of spotted hyenas.
'In group-living societies such as that of spotted hyenas and many primates, offspring usually acquire a social rank just below that held by their mother (‘rank inheritance’) and obtain the fitness benefits associated with it. As a result, daughters and sons of high-ranking mothers live a similarly privileged and long life as their mothers.' (Source: Hyena Project)

This video is actually kind of misleading. Males born in higher ranks aren’t forced out. They choose to leave when they’re ready. But when remaining in their pack they remain the same rank as their mother. Because high ranking females prefer low ranking immigrants the male offspring remain in the high ranks until they choose to leave. The reason they’re at the lowest rank when moving to a new clan is because these hierarchies are based on maternal inheritance. So although females are dominant and more aggressive (keep in mind rare cases of male co-dominance and male leaders have been observed), they still share strong family bonds. In fact like the males, females become more submissive when wanting to mate. In fact mating is only done with the full consent of both animals and females prefer males that are more submissive as and older females have more of a bias towards immigrant males that they’ve formed CLOSE BONDS with. It seems that this video oversimplified and misrepresented hyena hierarchical systems. Males do often have a bad time in the hyena packs, not because they are males. But because due to their nomadic nature (again not because they’re male) meaning they are often in lower ranks when moving to new clans. It’s kind of confusing really because she said she observed hyenas in real life. So I don’t understand why the misinformation.

Yes but Wolves based their leader on who is the more expereinced so it can be female or male in short the parents always leads the pack and when they become older and weaker their children will take over. Media wants to show Alpha males in Wolves but they are a gender neutral system based on age and Capabilities.
