Cats were considered part of the family in ancient Egypt. When the family cat died, the family went into mourning just as if a human member had died. Wealthy families even mummified their cats. Several sizable cat cemetaries even existed. Killing a cat was a capital offense.

This is not the full truth, tho. Most animals were worshiped in Egypt, but being worshiped ment that they were being given as offerings to the gods. Selling offerings (mummified corpses) was a huge business and they were basically breeding cats and killing them at very young age just to bury them. This is why those "cemeteries" exists. Ancient Egypt was not a great place to be if you were a cat... or an ibis, crocodile, lion, ect.

Yeah cats havent really been domesticated when you think of it, any cat could be thrown outside and never let in its house again and it would survive easily. Compared to a dog which would be confused and sad and probably not really know how to catch food as dogs only seem to play for fun when they chase birds or squirrels very few dogs can actually catch food. Cats live alone also where as dogs are supposed to be in big groups so they can hunt down animals to eat so a lone dog wouldn't really catch food.

Our two newest kittens, as soon as my wife opened the carrier to let them out in the kitchen, immediately found me in my room and climbed onto my shoulder. Every other cat we've ever had wanted to explore first. The one who found me first spends hours curled up on my left arm, so I'm getting exercise without trying. I'll be watching YT, and out of nowhere, I find a kitten has leaped onto my chest, and is sitting there staring me in the face. He so clearly decided I belong to him it sometimes makes me feel like crying...and before we brought them home, he ran away from me when I tried to hold him. He was the runt of the litter, and more than ten months old, his tail is still short and stiff, unlike his brother...but both have virtually no hair on their ears.

You're probably correct. It's just that simple. Mother cats often abandon a kitten here or there if they deem them unviable. The kitten will cry out to it's mother for days with no response until eventually it dies. Some ancient child probably adopted one of those kittens and thus domestication began.

Cats let themselves be domesticated, they are different from dogs. the reason why a lot of people think cats are "mean" is bc cats, unlike dogs, have boundries and will only open up to you if they like you even if you take care of them really well, while dogs are friendly in general.

    • @gideonmele1556
      @gideonmele1556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +319

Cats didn’t need to be socialized, they were there for pest control for when people weren’t around, dogs were used to guard and protect humans and property. Cats don’t have the social hierarchies that dogs have and cats are mostly solitary with small or short-lived social encounters. Likewise, a cat isn’t very dangerous: hissing, clawing, biting, knocking things over, giving the death stare when you touch the tummy, etc. it’s funny or adorable for a cat but not it would not be so cute if said cat was the size of a wolf. Cats weren’t fully socialized or domesticated because they didn’t need to be to do their job, dogs had to be both for safety and because they were around people so long (and with humans coopting their pack tendencies). If cats needed to be around humans more or for a separate job, they would have been selectively bred to do so (in just 10 generations a team of Russian scientists were able to fully domesticate and socialize a species of fox just by selective breeding. Cats would have been little different).

Cats were domesticated by showing up. Happens to this day. Strangely enough, I met people who are even in denial about this. "It's not my cat. It's a feral cat that shows up for food and snuggles almost every day. Last winter I sheltered the cat. There is enough room in my bed so why not?" Or "I temporarily adopted the cat five years ago when the owner died. I don't even know the name. The other cats in my apartment are offspring. The babies got temporary names because I don't want a cat. Temporary is important word here. May I borrow your cat treadmill? I'm just curious if those cats like it." Or "I'm not a cat person. Mittens is not really a pet. I keep Mittens around because taking care for him is a remedy to my depression. It's very heart-warming how much Mittens loves snuggles, especially at night. It's well worth the food and vet expenses." I'm not making this up.

When talking about domestication of cats (or dogs), people always forget the companionship/affection factor. Most people know what its like to feel hungry. They see a skinny stray one day and their empathy kicks in, they throw it some scraps. Cat learns to come around for food, familiarity breeds some mild affection... then one day mr ancient man is having a bad day sitting there feeling down, maybe got in a fight with the cavewoman bc he didnt throw the elk carcass away after dinner which turned into an argument about how he never takes out the carcasses AND leaves his bloody spears everywhere, doesnt even wipe them down...
So hes sitting there feeling down, and this cute fluffy thing rubs against his legs and meows, and for the first time, instead of just throwing it food, he reaches down and touches it... it likes being pet, he feels his mood lift a little, and a friendship is born :)

Nope, that's not the way feline domestication went down. Agricultural production of grain attracts rodents which in turn attract cats. The predatory instincts of cats proved useful to humans in controlling rodent populations, and humans engaged in activities that lured in easy prey for the cats, so humans and cats developed a symbiotic relationship through a chain reaction that started with the agricultural revolution.

Umm . . . My cats domesticated me. I no longer run wild, sleeping and eating wherever.
It seems the same time I got my first cat I began cooking my own meals and sleeping in my own bed more often. What was once a cute animal to watch became a companion. I even started talking to an animal, looking for answers in a cat's eyes. Somehow I decided to bring more cats in, even though it seemed illogical to have more litter boxes that I had to clean more often, along with buying more cat food. Now if I have to sleep away from home my first order of business is "find someone to care for my cats".

Humans saw wolves and meticulously sculpted them in hundreds of ways to fit dozens of niches for all the different jobs they wanted them to do.

Our cats have always preferred catching, and eating rodents outside. The ones they bring into the house they consider toys rather than food. We had a cat that carried a large (bigger than the cat) very much alive jackrabbit into our second floor bedroom in the middle of the night . The cat let it go, and the cat and jackrabbit went running all around the bedroom. The sliding door to a second story balcony right outside the bedroom was open. The jackrabbit ran out and jumped off the balcony to the ground below. The cat followed and did the same.

Just an FYI, when a cat starts to urinate in unusual places, the first thing that has to be done is a trip to the vet. This is frequently a warning sign of a UTI, bladder crystals, or another medical problem. If the vet finds nothing wrong, then it's time to see if there's something new in the environment that's upsetting the cat or triggering 'marking' instinct. Only after these things have been cleared should behavior be addressed.

This is why I’ve always loved cats. They’re still always semi-wild. You have to earn their affection and loyalty over time. I love dogs too, but it’s in their genetic programming to automatically follow and obey their perceived alpha due to being pack animals. As long as you show authority, a dog will usually automatically love and respect you. I love how independent cats are, yet they can be so loyal and loving if you gain their trust.

Cats are pretty well known to thrive in most ecosystems they find themselves in. They explore and adapt and they're proven to intentionally vary their diet and try new things to see if it's better. Even domesticated cats do very well for themselves without human intervention. There is also evidence that suggests that humans bred dogs to catch vermin, not cats. Dog breeds built for that purpose are actually far more effective than their feline counterparts. The most recent research that I've seen supports that cats just moved themselves into the human ecosystem and changed their behavior to get what they wanted from us. If they were anything like my boys, it was probably all about the cuddles.

Trenton Palmer Here’s the problem with that argument, these cats aren’t part of the local ecosystem. If we didn’t bring cats to us, they wouldn’t be here. So it’s completely unnatural for cats to be there. For example, if you bring a pike to a small pond, it will eat most of the fish, and many of the species in that pond will be eliminated. So bad for the ecosystem. But that’s not natural, because it shouldn’t be here in the first place. And yeah things die, but it’s to feed other animals and feed back into the ecosystem. When animals are eaten by cats that already get enough food to survive, nothing gains from it (unless you count satisfying a cats pallet). So no, it’s not just part of natural life. It’s harming the environment.

Yes. It was Saint Helena that brought the cats to Cyprus. So, Saint Helena set sail to the holy places to find the holy cross. She did, however upon returning back to Constantinople, she shipwrecked in another region of the empire, Cyprus. She slept there and the next day she couldn’t find the two pieces of cross that she had brought with her. However, there was a bright light upon a mountain top, where the pieces were found. There, she founded two monasteries (which still exist today). The island was however plagued by terrible drought, overrun by snakes and rats. So, she came back to Cyprus and brought with her many many cats, to get rid of the snakes and rats. And this is how cats saved Cyprus.

@@Elenrai Yes thee first wave came 9000 BC years ago, but a second wave came in 300 AD with Empress Saint Helena, who brought dozens of thousand of cats more in Cyprus with several ships from Egypt and Lebanon. Those cats arrived to stop the snake infestation that the hundreds of thousands local cats couldn't so she brought another 30000 cats. Today those cats made the race of Saint Helena Cat and the Saint Nicholas Cat, while the initial Cypriot cats make the Cypriot Giant Aphrodite Cat. A fourth race showed up from the intermixing in the 20th century AD. Those cats are called the Local Cypriot Cats.
So Cyprus has 4 Cypriot cat Races:
      1) Local Cypriot Cats
      2) Aphrodite's Giant Cat
      3) Saint Helena Cat
      4) Saint Nicholas Cat
The 4 races of cat Races in Cyprus are big in size and with short hair. Geneticists, Breeders and Veterinarians want to create a 5th race with high standards until 2050. They will take selective ancestors from the 4 Cypriot races and possibly other non Cypriot cats to make it. The idea is to make a breed of cats that will have minimum health problems, being large, short haired, with great variety of colors and friendly. Cypriot cats are ideal as they have been through natural selection for 12000 years now even before they arrived to Cyprus.
