A 9,500-year-old burial in Cyprus represents some of the oldest known evidence of human/cat companionships anywhere in the world. But when did this close relationship between humans and cats start? And how did humans help cats take over the world?

Exactly 😂
i also feel sometimes my cat domesticated me.
Sometimes when i see a bunch of cats in one area I always think that they having a meeting to when to take over the world
Yeah cats havent really been domesticated when you think of it, any cat could be thrown outside and never let in its house again and it would survive easily. Compared to a dog which would be confused and sad and probably not really know how to catch food as dogs only seem to play for fun when they chase birds or squirrels very few dogs can actually catch food. Cats live alone also where as dogs are supposed to be in big groups so they can hunt down animals to eat so a lone dog wouldn't really catch food.

When talking about domestication of cats (or dogs), people always forget the companionship/affection factor. Most people know what its like to feel hungry. They see a skinny stray one day and their empathy kicks in, they throw it some scraps. Cat learns to come around for food, familiarity breeds some mild affection... then one day mr ancient man is having a bad day sitting there feeling down, maybe got in a fight with the cavewoman bc he didnt throw the elk carcass away after dinner which turned into an argument about how he never takes out the carcasses AND leaves his bloody spears everywhere, doesnt even wipe them down...
So hes sitting there feeling down, and this cute fluffy thing rubs against his legs and meows, and for the first time, instead of just throwing it food, he reaches down and touches it... it likes being pet, he feels his mood lift a little, and a friendship is born :)
Lovely 👍🏻

On the beginning of pandemic me and my partner moved out to countryside. And there was a feral cat, hunting rats, mouses etc. We started to feed him and slowly build trust. I took him over a year to allow us to stroke him. 3 years later he will still go to hunt, but. He wants to be cuddle so much by us. He feels 100% safe with us. His first humans :)
Stroke?? Pause bro
Our two newest kittens, as soon as my wife opened the carrier to let them out in the kitchen, immediately found me in my room and climbed onto my shoulder. Every other cat we've ever had wanted to explore first. The one who found me first spends hours curled up on my left arm, so I'm getting exercise without trying. I'll be watching YT, and out of nowhere, I find a kitten has leaped onto my chest, and is sitting there staring me in the face. He so clearly decided I belong to him it sometimes makes me feel like crying...and before we brought them home, he ran away from me when I tried to hold him. He was the runt of the litter, and more than ten months old, his tail is still short and stiff, unlike his brother...but both have virtually no hair on their ears.

In our folktales, cats are believed to be the tiger's aunt (father's sister), she was asked to fetch fire from the humans. But when she reaches the human house, she tasted burnt rice (that sticks to the bottom of a pan) and sweet potato baked in ash ( under the fire). She wanted more and more of it and never went back to the forest. And hence settled with humans.

It’s amazing how cats are the most popular pet on earth and they don’t do anything for us like other animals . They’re just soo insanely cute and smart and pleasant that we love them so much
Don't do anything? They make us laugh! They make us warm! They make us relax! They make us feel loved. They accept our love. They bring friendship and companionship. They are living works of art and bring beauty into our lives. Unless you consider love, beauty, laughter, warmth, comfort, friendship and ease nothing--and think how rare they are in the world!--then perhaps you'll reconsider.

They were incredibly important for protecting grain stores and still help prevent rodents from settling in the house
Last year there was construction in a park across the street that drove mice out and suddenly into our house. My lazy, chunky lapcat TANK immediately turned into a mouse murdering machine and a few days and about a dozen dead mice later we didn’t have mice anymore. I’d say he definitely earned his keep! It was really incredible to see him sitting in the doorway to the kitchen listening intently, then suddenly creep forward, dive into this tiny gap behind the oven, and pop back out with a mouse in his teeth. I would never have known we even had any mice if he hadn’t woken me up to show me every time he killed one

Yeah I still miss the stray cats in my college campus. Some of the dorm buildings are infested with mice and after the stray cats settled down near the door step, mice just puff, disappeared.
And it’s funny how some of these stray mama cats know the way to get free nannies. They just put every single kitten on the doorstep and see to it that some students sit down to look after and play with them. And then they were like: “Imma gonna go hunting mice. Take care of my babies, human.” It works every single time.
3:43 - _"For thousands of years they stayed close to human dwellings for food but weren't necessarily close to the people themselves..."_
Some things don't change
Kitties domesticated themselves. They saw a large warm cave with lots of food and a creature that would help it take care of it's babies, and was like "I'm moving in, and I'll tolerate you, I guess" and humans were like "you're fluffy and cute, okay!"
more like im meowing in
So accurate

Nope, that's not the way feline domestication went down. Agricultural production of grain attracts rodents which in turn attract cats. The predatory instincts of cats proved useful to humans in controlling rodent populations, and humans engaged in activities that lured in easy prey for the cats, so humans and cats developed a symbiotic relationship through a chain reaction that started with the agricultural revolution.
@@willdwyer6782 no, cat wanted warm home, human said "cute!" and let it. That's what happened.
Cats were considered part of the family in ancient Egypt. When the family cat died, the family went into mourning just as if a human member had died. Wealthy families even mummified their cats. Several sizable cat cemetaries even existed. Killing a cat was a capital offense.
medieval europe could do with learning a few things from the egyptians…
should still be a capital offense of killing a cat. No mercy to those who kills cats.
It still should be a capital offense for ending the life of a cat 🐈!
As it should've been.
This is not the full truth, tho. Most animals were worshiped in Egypt, but being worshiped ment that they were being given as offerings to the gods. Selling offerings (mummified corpses) was a huge business and they were basically breeding cats and killing them at very young age just to bury them. This is why those "cemeteries" exists. Ancient Egypt was not a great place to be if you were a cat... or an ibis, crocodile, lion, ect.
I work at catcafe, and I can confirm all cats have a personality of their own. Cats never changed!

Cats were domesticated by showing up. Happens to this day. Strangely enough, I met people who are even in denial about this. "It's not my cat. It's a feral cat that shows up for food and snuggles almost every day. Last winter I sheltered the cat. There is enough room in my bed so why not?" Mittens is not really a pet. I keep Mittens around because taking care for him is a remedy to my depression. It's very heart-warming how much Mittens loves snuggles, especially at night. It's well worth the food and vet expenses." I'm not making this up.

Catpocalypse is coming
The human estimate pop is 7,753,342,002
6:30 This is one of the cutest images I've seen.
For my whole life I was a dog guy, and even joked that my favorite name for a cat would be "Dogfood."
Well, that's not funny anymore--because I've fallen totally in love with a cat. Truly, madly in love! I buy her treats, I plead with her to sleep with me, and we play her favorite game, "string," whenever she gives the "meow." I'm hoping we can move in together, but she's still committed to another guy. He'll never love her as much as I do, and I think they both know it. So I'll wait, because I'm patient. And she, as you know, is curious.
Cats let themselves be domesticated, they are different from dogs. the reason why a lot of people think cats are "mean" is bc cats, unlike dogs, have boundries and will only open up to you if they like you even if you take care of them really well, while dogs are friendly in general.
Cats didn’t need to be socialized, they were there for pest control for when people weren’t around, dogs were used to guard and protect humans and property. Cats don’t have the social hierarchies that dogs have and cats are mostly solitary with small or short-lived social encounters. Likewise, a cat isn’t very dangerous: hissing, clawing, biting, knocking things over, giving the death stare when you touch the tummy, etc. it’s funny or adorable for a cat but not it would not be so cute if said cat was the size of a wolf. Cats weren’t fully socialized or domesticated because they didn’t need to be to do their job, dogs had to be both for safety and because they were around people so long (and with humans coopting their pack tendencies). If cats needed to be around humans more or for a separate job, they would have been selectively bred to do so (in just 10 generations a team of Russian scientists were able to fully domesticate and socialize a species of fox just by selective breeding. Cats would have been little different).
@@gideonmele1556 You definitely need to socialise a cat and they tend to form groups. Cats are more social than people thinks.
@@gideonmele1556 modern cats actually form large colonies when their populations aren't controlled by humans, the social hierarchy is definitely different from dogs and humans but it's not inherently lesser. they are very social creatures but they depend on it less.
They have standards, I respect it.
@@elliotmydude well, my personal theory is that cats operate a lot more like early humans than dogs, forming very light hierarchies based on profesionalism rather than more rigid hierarchies. Like an "anarchist" assocation of individuals that freely associate together for mutual benefit, instead of the tight nitted heirarchy of a wolf pack.
Cats are one of the few animals who domesticated themselves.
Kinda. Many of them still can survive on their own. That's what I find fascinating about them. They're still natural with the exemption of some breeds (like this cruel short foots).
@Idotic Moron no, they wouldn't.
Dogs did too
@@siyacer Not really. Humans selectively bred dogs for a millennia in order to make them express physical and personality traits that were desirable to humans. They were forcibly domesticated. lol
@@chrislowery4971 Wolves came up to humans, humans just tolerated the friendlier ones.
Decided while watching this that my current kitty will be buried alongside me. Rosco is about my 10th kitty but never had a pal like this. He sleeps by my side most every night, so it only makes sense to my twisted mind. Hopefully it is many years distant and the cat dies first!

I think cats would disagree and claim that they domesticated humans.
You are correct

damn right cats aint that stupid to admit human's credit
I hate the cats that always c one to my house I hit them with long stick
Cats are not considered fully domesticated. Cats are considered only semidomesticated.
our families first pet was a cat that was following us one day at an old water mill farm in the woods. He followed us around all day and the groundskeeper asked if it was ours. we said no and he asked if we'd like to keep him. So we named him mystery bcuz of the M on his forehead and was a mystery where he came from!
oh what a piece of wisdom it is to know that people this long ago loved their cats and all their little shenanigans so much that they got buried together
Until you find out that the cats were quietly murdered shortly after the humans death and buried alongside them

There was a cat in ancient Rome who got an entire tomb with his name engraved on it, so we know Romans viewed cats as pets and many felt affection towards them 🥲(they were popular pets for farmers and children I think)

"A mongoose is kept for catching mice, a cat is kept for being a cat" - Sumerian Proverb
and there is, in my opinion, no greater raison d'etre
I'd love to know the age and precise source of that proverb, if you are able to provide it. Thanks!
Nikolay Ivankov thanks, that’s incredible. cats must have always been that cute and cuddly.
too bad there isn’t such a thing as time travel just to observe. no interaction t’all. i really wonder what we’d find out. so fascinating . :) 🐈🐾 🐕 🌻
Our cats have always preferred catching, and eating rodents outside. The ones they bring into the house they consider toys rather than food. We had a cat that carried a large (bigger than the cat) very much alive jackrabbit into our second floor bedroom in the middle of the night . The cat let it go, and the cat and jackrabbit went running all around the bedroom. The sliding door to a second story balcony right outside the bedroom was open. The jackrabbit ran out and jumped off the balcony to the ground below. The cat followed and did the same.

Generally, those who dislike cats have never had them as pets.
I dislike the stench of a household with feline pets, I also dislike the entitlement of cat owners that think they should be allowed to let their cat roam outside.
Camper if the animal still wants to be free then it should be allowed. Having it stuck inside forever would be a horrible life to live for any animal.
Charlie cats allowed outside are more dangerous to the ecosystem than humans are. They regularly put small animals into extinction.
Trenton Palmer Here’s the problem with that argument, these cats aren’t part of the local ecosystem. If we didn’t bring cats to us, they wouldn’t be here. So it’s completely unnatural for cats to be there. For example, if you bring a pike to a small pond, it will eat most of the fish, and many of the species in that pond will be eliminated. So bad for the ecosystem. But that’s not natural, because it shouldn’t be here in the first place. And yeah things die, but it’s to feed other animals and feed back into the ecosystem. When animals are eaten by cats that already get enough food to survive, nothing gains from it (unless you count satisfying a cats pallet). So no, it’s not just part of natural life. It’s harming the environment.
I grew up with a cat, which I liked. But in general, I really dislike cats.
This channel should be broadcasting into space for "Eons" :)
My cat was so domesticated that I had to chase the mouse myself in the pantry.😑😅

Love the discrepancy between how cats and dogs came to be.
Humans saw wolves and meticulously sculpted them in hundreds of ways to fit dozens of niches for all the different jobs they wanted them to do.
But humans saw cats and were like "you're absolutely perfect as is, keep it up and hang around" and they only really got smaller as their prey was in cramped barns corners and storehouses more and open fields less.
Cat people are too much. Some of these comments are so over the top 😂
@@isitoveryet9525 You don't have the parasite it seems
I think it's more like,
Wolves raised by humans were chill with being bred for different jobs. And cats refused.
Edit the First: Turns out, that's wrong. Humans bred caution out of cats. That's why you can't let your pet cat wander outside, because they're too dumb to know when to run away. Unless you _want_ them to die, of course.
Edit the Second: but I didn't do research, so take that with a grain of salt, maybe.
Ya no, people definitely didn’t say “cats are perfect”
this comment is so underrated!! it surprises me when i think dogs were actually wolves, actual wild animals.

You'd probably be sad once you see so many hungry and sick cats. Ferals, especially in that number, don't have the lives cats deserve.

Rudyard Kipling nailed it, with his story of how the cat adopted people, "The Cat Who Walked By Himself " from the Just So stories. Anyone born in the 60s likely knows this story off by heart.
