4:00. The short answer is. That is the exact frequency a 144 Hz Panel actually runs that. Just like a 60 frame panel will actually have a 59.49 optimal frequency range.
It's kind of like g-sync. It's lining the frames up with the display frequency.
Which makes it look smoother because you're getting more information per second. And it prevents frame tearing. By which some part of the frame is different from the rest of the display panel. Causing the picture to look split. Which vsync also gets rid of. But increases latency.
So if you have the option to run at that slightly lower frequency. You should usually take it. For better fidelity with no latency penalty.

I'm pretty sure it all goes back to color vs black and white analog TV transmission. Black and white TV was 30 fps, but black and white sets couldn't pick up 30 fps color. They could however pick up 29.97 fps color signals and everything since then has been a byproduct of that.

Monitors go to 143.856 because it's evenly divisible by the standard 23.976 framerate that has been used in movies forever. This means you don't have to use any pulldown which can create artifacts or frame drops although it would be really difficult to notice a duplicated or dropped frame at such a refresh rate.

4:30 - Having a tiny bezel allows for manufacturing tolerances. Getting those tolerances closer and closer to zero starts getting exponentially more expensive. The other option would be to bury the tolerances in screen resolution where you'd get 1430p to 1440p monitors with no interior bottom bezel.
Personally, though, I prefer more pixels. I also prefer interior bezels under glass to exterior bezels on top of the glass. They're more seamless and attractive to my eye. Besides, you'd have to get rid of both types to make an edge to edge display.

Good way would be to glue the screen nearest to the edge you can and have support behind it . Or entirely see through on little sticks basically and the main hardware is in a chrome cast sized container somewhere fairly close on the desk . I guess that's not very robust, the 2nd idea.

    • @ccelik97
      @ccelik97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@jamescassar5348 yeah it's intolerable if you're looking it up close (like that phone) but for monitors + farther away; meh. Also I'm not into stacking up/putting together multiple displays exactly edge to edge + the AR + VR displays are all coming to stay so at this point I don't really care. My laptop has a really good (but 1080p, but it's enough as 1 screen to me) so the next extra displays I'll be paying for will be AR glasses that work with Linux, Windows and Android (+ iOS etc those niches too if they so wish to lol).

This. It's either a thick exterior bezel to cover up the interior bezel, or keep it the way it is. Many people hate the lip of the monitor. Not to mention, it's 30 lbs. I ordered it anyway because the specs for a non-curved monitor is rare and becoming obsolete due to the popularity of curved ultrawide monitors. Hopefully non-curved ultrawides never go away because I get nauseated from the curved view. I may need to purchase an LG non-curved monitor as a backup and stash it away.

I have this monitor, I hate cable cluter and most cheap kvm’s just do peripheral switching while you’ll still need to change the display source on the monitor. You can spend a LOT of money on one that does both display and peripheral but you never know what that’ll do to your display signal. Best monitor purchase I have ever made!

If thunderbolt can be cheaply or freely licensed so everyone can benefit from usb-c's capabilities, we'd all be better off . We can do a 4x pcie gen 3.0 connection over usb-c 3.2 gen 2 and lots of power. no reason to lock it down. This way I can use my quality mic/headset for voice calls etc, while still retaining full control over my work laptop and no need to plug around stuff or deal with a physical KVM.

Gaming aside, I do this at home now. One of the HDMI inputs on my main display goes to an HDMI switch with my consoles on it. Granted, I don't have a big fancy PC, I'm not at 120/144 Hz. But, work computer, home computer, and my consoles are all on display with the same headphones (Astro A40's, usb goes to a switcher to between the two PC's with a cable I can swap out for the PS4 when needed).
MIght not be showy or super polished, but it is 100% functional from the same chair.

so about that weird slight under/overshoot on refresh rates:
the processor in the monitor isn't clocked at an even division of 120/144/240 or whatever you set. when the processor goes to make a subclock for the display's refresh rate, it gets as close as it can, but sometimes it doesn't get exact. some manufacturers probably do some firmware tricks to get the refresh rate displayed as a whole number, while others might just have the processor designed to clock at harmonics of the desired refresh rate.
tl;dr: the clock of the monitor's processor isn't evenly divisible by your refresh rate, so you get decimals.

I bought my current monitor, an Iiamya 34" Ultrawide with Fast-IPS, 144Hz Freesync at 3440x1440 in November 2020. I paid about the same [a little over £360, which is about USD$475 today]. It is an absolute beast and I'd absolutely recommend it for anyone looking for a similar option. While I know it at least wasn't available in the US back then [not sure now], it's still available in Europe for about the same price. It doesn't have a KVM, but I wasn't looking for one, and the only thing it was lacking [which is the same for this] was a curve, but it was _by far_ the cheapest 1440 ultrawide available to me [every other option was starting at like €800, but they were curved and everything else was similar or better].

Other thing that prevented me from using the KVM though is not being able to put monitor to sleep properly (like after 20 mins of not using PC or with bat script).
Problem is sometimes it would wake itself up immediately after going to sleep (heard sounds of connecting devices so I guess KB/M got reconnected when monitor screen turned off) OR more importantly, sometimes when it did go to sleep, it wouldn't register KB/M actions until turned off and on again (which is a pain to do).

4:00 it’s for NTSC compatibility, since to add color for that, they downclocked the refresh rate by 1000/1001. In PAL version, it’s straight 25/50/100/200 Hz while NTSC uses both 30/60/120/240 Hz and 29.97/59.94/119.88/239.76 Hz.
Not sure if that’s the case, but movies also uses downclocked values of both 24/48 Hz and 23.98/47.95 Hz. It could be to enable 3:2 pull down conversions, but don’t quote me on that.
If this monitor has a downclocked value for 144 Hz, it could be to maintain compatibility with those movies refresh rates. Again, don’t quote me on that.

Have a USB Switch that has all my peripherals including mic and webcam connected to both my main computer and work computer. Works flawlessly, USB switch introduces any lag in mice or keyboard inputs so I can still game on my main rig with everything still connected to the usb switch.

I currently have the same size & res. MSI display but curved (1800R) and without KVM and honestly, for coding, 21:9 is IMHO far better than even 2 16:9s, because on them you end up with a lot of wasted space and swiveling your head too much (with 21:9 I can switch back and forth between 2 things open each on half of the monitor just by eye movement alone), while taking up much more space and requiting additional video output that your laptop may not have. This is great option for anyone working from home on company laptop and having their own gaming desktop. Since I bought it a bit over 2 years ago, 2 of my buddies bought the exact same model and both are very happy with it and we all agree that 21:9 is superior for gaming to our previous 16:9s and 21:9 is the format that most movies are currently distributed at.
Over all, I think the increased price, in comparison with mine, is worth it for the KVM and superior mounting options (mine only has tilt and doesn't have VESA), but I would miss the display curve (if you sit at your desk with the monitor on it like me, the 1800R is the sweet spot, but any further than that, flat would be preferable) and would love it to have USB PD.
PS: I deliberately didn't state the exact model of my display because 1. I wanted to highlight a use case for product in video and my experience with similar one, 2. if you're interested, you should look for what's currently available to you and suits your particular needs and budget 3. 10:25 I think the point of ultra-wide for gaming is that the extra width is more for just your peripheral, to see stuff sooner as it comes into the field of view. This came about 2 years too late :D when the lockdowns started and we switched to working from home I just bought two displayport switches (for the monitors) and a USB hub and switch (for all the peripherals), and use these three as a ghetto all-purpose KVM to switch between my work laptop and personal desktop.

This is an amazing deal as far as ultra wides go. Great entry point

I have the G34WQC monitor. It looks like this is a bit of an upgrade from that. The built-in stand on this looks way better than the one that came with the G34WQC, which is pretty bad. The USB-C and KVM is a nice improvement as well. My G34WQC power supply makes a bit of a whining noise, and the built-in DAC sounds really bad through its built in headphone jack. Other than that it's a solid monitor from my experience. Power delivery over USB-C would have been nice though for a one-cable setup.

Turns out it does do power over USB-C but only 18W

For ultrawide monitor viewing optimization, buy a flushed monitor mount and you can have it as little as 2 inches from the wall. For me, this helps with the distance. If you are using a monitor stand, or desk mount stand, you could reduce the distance by 4-8 inches. It makes a huge difference so you don't have to sit all the way back in your chair.

The design is so similar to my G24F, I like it. Would I switch to M34WQ? Probably not, I'll need to upgrade my GPU first, but the specs/price ratio is very compelling.

I agree with the inner bezels, but I have come to accept that most manufacturers just won't make it truly bezel-less. LG monitors are like this as well. Unless you are using a white background most of the time, then it doesn't bother me much. I have acclimated to its shortcomings. Lol. I ordered the Gigabyte M34WQ 34" Ultrawide Monitor a week ago and it will be arriving today. I purchased it for the specs such as 1440p, 144Hz, 1-2ms response time, and it has more than what I need such as KVM switch.

I like my g32qc but me and a few of my friends that all own new gigabyte monitors and we all have a problem with the nipple breaking after a few months. Mine I was playing and heard a springy twang and I checked around then felt the nipple which was slack. Also I hear quite a lot of cracking noises when I turn it off which is especially annoying when I had it in my room before I moved it. That being said it does look great

I bought a g34wqc a while ago for 500$ cad ... Il love that thing for working from home and gaming... I would say the only low point is the backlight bleed present in really dark content... Wich wouldn't be as present in the ips panel I believe

Would be really interesting to know what the latency impact of the KVM is?

Been WFH since 2yrs ago, got myself an Xiaomi 34 curved ultrawide (actually I think similar spec as M34WQ) for ~$350. my work life changed, much easier to do spreadsheet!

My best guess about why monitor aren't exactly at the refresh rate they are advertised would have to do with some kind of clock/multiplier situation, just like CPUs

Personally run a xiaomi mi 34" ultrawide. Now that is a super clean monitor with a 3070ti. However when that was released it was 500 this looks like a good generational upgrade with the kvm

The inner bezel is nice if you have webcam on top of the screen- you don't cover useable space.

This monitor also has a 27 inch variant available which is just as amazing. Highly recommend it!

Did I miss how the laptop and desktop were both connected to the same port on the monitor for KVM? Buying a KVM that actually gives you the expected performance and results is tough. So if you have a 1440p 165hz (thru DP) monitor, ensuring a KVM is capable of passing that through isn’t as easy to identify as you would think. It’d be nice if more monitors included multiple Display Ports, like they do with HDMI. Unplugging and plugging in DP from my gaming PC to my work docking station puts a little wear and tear on my GPU DP ports. I just switched over to HDMI for using my monitor with my work docking station, so I don’t have to keep swapping up the DP. 144hz at 1440p is perfectly fine.

Hey, is that a power connecter that isn't pre-attached and permanently connected to a monitor? Revolutionary!
