@@KCkohler When they removed it, it literally left gouges in the cable, and flexed the display so much they thought it was going to break. Before they ended up being able to remove it, it became a question of if Linus was willing to break the display. That's the level of force require, with an additional person to brace it. That is hardwired by almost any standard.

@@KCkohler That's not simply "removable" as "removable" in this context would be akin to "unpluggable." In reality, what is required is "disassembly." This is further reinforced by Apple's own technical specs which reflect that the power cable "is not removable."

The funniest thing about the cable is they engineered a proprietary connector and then made the plug non user removable. This is so they can attach cords for different regions as needed at time of manufacturing. Apple understands the benefit of modular design but actively chooses not to pass those benefits on to its customers.

    • @philongfire

Its crazy that Apple had gone completely out of their way to make it needlessly complicated on EVERYONE. Even logistics-wise, instead of packing the monitor with the corresponding region power cable its shipped to, they have to solder the power cable in and hope to God they have sold enough and have enough for each region these monitors are shipped to. If something does happen to the cable, that’s one more problem for the customer service team and Apple Store staff to deal with than they have to, and it would all be easily fixed just by making the cable removable.

Thank you guys! There is a HUGE issue with how this s**t has been reviewed so far - they are trying to move it as passable, which is plain ridiculous. No HDR, the most idiotic non-removable cable, unutilized chip (where is FaceID???), no variable refresh rate, moron approach towards stands and mounts and they charge 1400+ for this crap. Tech journalist must hold Apple accountable for such excuse of a product, otherwise they will keep pulling this over and over again. The audacity of them calling it 'accesible' is beyond me - it's a pure money trap for the less tech savy users. Verge gave it 6 out of 10 even though they mentioned it's old ass backlight technology - 6 out of 10 doesn't do justice for such prefatory tactics towards their consumers. To replace your cable, you will ship the whole thing to Apple Care, for which you pay of course, and not be able to use your product whole it's getting 'fixed'. There is a power cable standard for monitors that's being used for years, they didn't had to ducking reinvent the wheel, heck, use the magsafe if you wanna blood suck more cash.
Apple needs to be held under the same standard, as other brands, for what they release and media should remind them that.
You guys, are the single best review of this display so far and I'm 99% sure it will remain that way. Thank you Andy and all else behind camera for doing the right thing, instead of eating the rotten Apples.

    • @whenhen
      @whenhen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +64

Plus all of the reviewers praising it for the design should show it being used by someone who isn't the optimal height for the monitor. Put it on a good looking heavy duty VESA mount (which adds at least $75 to the total cost), to make it actually usable by people who aren't an average male, and see what that does to the overall aesthetic. Otherwise, they can review it with a stack of papers on the bottom to put it at a comfortable viewing angle, and again review it that way.
Forcing users to pay a premium just to make it usable for a huge majority of the population who aren't 5'10" (178cm) should have been panned by most reviewers, but instead it's barely noted by a majority of them. Meanwhile basically every other monitor oriented towards professionals has height adjustability included because it's blatantly obvious to every manufacturer that this feature is vital to ensuring that the tall man and short woman in the office can both see the screen.

This solution is genius by Apple.
They have to conform to IEC 60320 standards because of the power cable's high voltage.
Manufacturers have done one of two things up until now to solve this issue:
      1) Use a C13/C14 connector.
      2) Creating a proprietary connector and soldering it to the display.
Option 1 would mean they must make the display thicker because the C13/C14 doesn't fit in the Studio Display. Apple cares about aesthetics, so they didn't want to do this.
Option 2 is not friendly to consumers because the display has to be replaced when the cable breaks. Actually, so many TV and HiFi equipment manufacturers have taken this approach for decades, and no one bats an eye.
Apple did something innovative here; they came up with a 3rd option. They made the cable non-user removable to comply with IEC 60320 standards, but they can remove the cable with a special tool. This way, they can replace a broken cable for the consumer when it breaks.

Update, My Studio Display blew up yesterday, belching smoke for 6 minutes before a final loud bang. Only lasted 18 months, very scary failure and I did get it on video. Posted pictures of the failure on my community tab and what to look out for before this failure. I can't post a video because I now have no display. Update 2. Initial Investigations are pointing at the slim internal power supply thats failed, the left hand side section when looking at the display. The staff at the Apple store have seen all my videos of the failure and they were astonished, looked over the Display with a fine tooth comb but never opened it up. They could see from the video it's a totally destroyed unit. I purchased it from Apple 18 months ago and I'm in the refund process. Sadly that refund process isn't as automatic as it should be but i'm not surprised. And what's wild is they didn't keep the very damaged Studio Display. I'm the proud owner of a bricked, burnt out Studio Display, Yay.

Not a 5K one. There are only two 5K monitors on the market right now, and both use the same panel. The other one costs $1299 and is in a cheap plastic case that wobbles horribly with the tiniest bump to the desk it is placed on. As a 27" 5K iMac user, I am disappointed that this did not have mini-LED (or even _any_ form of local dimming), it's just the same exact panel with a brighter backlight for nearly the starting cost of the 27" iMac. I can understand not being 120Hz ProMotion, since Thunderbolt 4 can't support 5K/120Hz. But the lack of local dimming is a big misstep IMO.
When my iMac dies, will I buy this? Probably not, a nice 27" 4K monitor would be just fine, or maybe. 5K2K ultrawide. I'd rather put that extra money towards a higher-specced Mac Studio. But being one of only two 5K monitors on the market, and a rather significant step up in build quality from the $1299 one, it was priced at what Apple thought the market will bear. And I suspect it will sell just fine amongst people who are accustomed to the 5K iMacs/iMac Pros.

There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.
