Just so everyone knows, there are generally 2 types of porcupine puffers that are available the most. One is a normal/regular porcupine puffer that has the spots on it fins. The 2nd is called a longspine porcupine puffer(Diodon holocanthus) that gets a lot bigger than a normal porcupine puffer(the one in this video lacks the spots on the fins thus it is a longspine). They can grow up to 2 feet and require a tank minimum 180 gallons but I would recommend at least a 225. Common misconception is that it only gets 8 to 10 inches when in reality they grow to double the size. Also do not feed just shrimp/prawns you can also feed them clams, mussels, and any invertebrate you can get ahold of realistically. You need to make sure that you don't feed a lot of silversides or other fish to them because they aren't naturally piscevores they will eventually end up with fatty liver. I feed mine all of the above as well as squid(with cartilage part in hood) to make sure it still gets some teeth grinding action.
The "regular" porcupine puffer you mentioned is (I think) Diodon hystrix (spot-fin porcupinefish) which has a maximum recorded length of 36 inches (91 cm) and common length of 16 inches (40 cm) according to FishBase. Diodon holocanthus (long-spine porcupinefish) is smaller with a maximum recorded length of 20 inches (50 cm) and common length of 6 inches (15 cm) according to FishBase. I've only ever heard of Diodon holocanthus being referred to as the "generic" porcupine puffer. Diodon holocanthus also features banding whilst Diodon hystrix does not.
Have you ever kept more than one puffer together? I’ve read you can do a porq and a dog face together if they are the same general size and temperament….I have a 125 6 foot right now and a 220 on the way in the next 6 monthsish when a customer breaks down their tank. My dog face is really nice and gets along with a big blue spot and valentini in the 125 right now and I’m considering adding a normal porq with the three and then moving them to the 220 in half a year or so right now they are all 4”
So jealous, one of my favorite fish. I have always wanted one. My Green Spotted Puffer would never forgive me though. I love your Saltwater Macro tanks. Keep up the amazing work.
Thank you for posting this! I just got a porcupine puffer and I love him! He’s the sweetest! So cute and such a personality! He’s like one of my dogs! I’ve been searching for how to feed him meat in the shell! I have frozen half shelled clams but he lets them sink and doesn’t even look. He mostly eats frozen cubes off a stick and some freeze dried brine. Can you tell me what type of plants you have in with him? Does he eat any of them? Any suggestions or tips welcome! Thanks!!
In captivity, they will grow to be 6 to 10 inches. I have one 7 year old porcupine puffer in a 75G. He is about 8 inches long as is full grown. The 75G I gave him in is very bare, just basically sand and a couple small decor. So, 75G isn’t a problem at all if it’s a single fish with minimal decor
I have one. He loves silversides. He's never bothered my clean up crew, but did eat a clam I found on my live rock. They are so cool. I can pet mine.
They are so funny. Everywhere I see them they are all so smiley and cheerful and follow my fingers everywhere. They are like water puppies.
He is so nice and lovable.

Fish are amazing!

It's like a little puppy !
Where do you buy your prawns from? Grocery store or fish store?
How big is the tank?
may i ask what type of plants those are in your display ? and does it help you alot with the biological filtration needed for the puffer,
Caulerpa macroalgae. Yes they do in fact remove a lot of nutrients
I only have a 96 gallon tank with a 30 gallon sump. Will that be fine for a the puffer?
Hi jasmine, they say that the minimum gallon size tank for a porcupine puffer is 100gallons minimum ♥️ hope this helps
what plants do you have in the display tank?
Are they tank friendly?
What size tank do you have?
How big is he now? Can you do an update vid on him ?He's sooo cute!
He's getting bigger!
Hi love the Porcupine puffer! Do you think one of these puffers would be ok inside a 520L tank? I really want one :)
Yeah fine
You can use a 75G tank and it’s fine as long as it’s kept alone with minimal decor. Mine is 7 years old and is 8 inches long in my 75G with no issues
Does it matter what type of prawn you feed? i.e cooked or raw
No
Would a 20 gallon tank work or is that to small?
That was so cute when you fed it!
100 gallon minimum.
65 gal..... starter with plans to move up.. 20 gal wont work
