This is the all-new Audi Q4 e-tron! It’s an all-new, all-electric SUV meant to compete with the likes of the Volkswagen ID.4 & Skoda Enyaq, and Mat’s here to see if it has what it takes to become an EV SUV class-leader!
When it comes to the style stakes, there’s no denying that this new Q4 can compete with the best of them. It’s available in this guise or as a Sportback, and the exterior comes covered in cool creases and well designed bumpers. It’s also super stylish on the inside too.
As for performance, there are three options to get your hands on - the 30, 40 or 50. We’ve got our hands on the S-Line 40 for this review, but the range topper is the 50, which comes equipped with dual motors and the ability to produce 300hp. It’s also packing an 82kWh battery pack, which is good for a claimed range of 298 miles.
There’s one issue though (for us UK viewers, at least)… The price starts at just over £40,000, which means those of us in the UK miss out on the Government’s UK EV grant - a saving of £2,500! With that in mind, should you choose the Q4 e-tron, or go for something cheaper instead? It’s time to find out!

The breaks on electric cars tend to rust pretty easily Because they arent used very often.

Rear disc brakes get rusty even on many petrol cars, you have strong 145 kw braking capacity on rear tyres already, so rear brakes come to action only once in a time. It just makes sence to have brakes withm minimum mantanence and wear in time. Disk brakes are better in stopping power and cooling, you dont need any of those hete.
@@fug33 Drum brakes brake as hard as discs, it's just that they heat faster so they're going to fail sooner than discs.
"grille is completely unnecessary" - it isn't there for a strict purpose, likewise on all Audis it doesn't need to be as big as it is, it is there as a design feature, it's called brand identity.

Between the brake clunk sounds, lack of standard cameras and the AC vents on the hands, I'm out. That's atrocious for an Audi.

@@phillyphil1513 I got a BMW 330e and it makes similar noises. I have to drive it in full gas for around 3-5 mins until it goes away for a few hours. I took it to the dealership for a few times and they say its totally normal and no fix for it. In my mind, if I noticed those sound driving the test drive I wouldn't buy it at all.
No car maker should get a pass on that, especially when charging a premium.

I've had it for a few days now and, coming from a Q7 50 TDI, it's absolutely insane. It does everything so effortlessly and it's so damn nice to drive. I'm not a huge fan of its exterior looks but I adore everything else about it!

I have a 2019 honda civic sport plus, 1.5 182cv, i got it for 25000€. It comes with, camera, parking sensor, heated seats, electric roof, lane assist, cruise control, led automatic headlight etc. My mom's new Q3 doesn't even have heated seats, neither electric ones, for 40000€. Yes is German, more fancy, but the quality is not that good for that kind of money.
Just keep in mind the its not just the camera, but its quality as well.

Matt you mention the 'creaky' brakes in a lot of your EV reviews. Because of "one pedal driving" the brakes are not used very much and thus a small layer of dirt / rust builds up (more) on the brake discs and this causes the squeaking. After braking a few times it should be gone for a while.

The Sportback’s rear spoiler kills the design, in my opinion of course.
I would go for the normal version... and it’s a very good option although my fav is still the Mach-e :)
As much as I find the Mach E cool, I could never buy it because I made a promise to never buy an American vehicle.
Sportback looks far better in my opinion. Q4 SUV looks to similar to ID4

12:55 The comfort & sound pack doesn't give you the active cruise that keeps you in lane. For that you need the £1425 "Assistance Packaged Advanced" which includes "Adaptive cruise assist with emergency assist". This is additional to the "Adaptive cruise control with speed limiter" you get in the £1295 C&S pack. Yes it's typical Audi and a nightmare.

I like the grill. I know it is not there for any reason other than looks, but I think that's OK. Looks matter and I like it, gives it a very distinct Audi look.
I would honestly discard this car on the brakes noise alone. Completely unacceptable.
Having already ordered one, I am both hoping and praying that was either dodgy shocks on this car and / or using regen braking most of the time means I won't need to hear that racket. Otherwise I'll be talking to Audi at length.

@@choddo the only reason the noise actually happens is if you accelerate then brake suddenly the noise will only happen then. And you don’t normally do that unless in really slow clogging traffic

Smaller wheels give you more range. I don't understand why 19" are said to be "a little bit too small for this kind of car". Isn't that exactly the kind of car for them, being electric? I love the points about the ergonomics (air vents too close to the hands, dial button in the way, the glare etc. You pay attention to detail and that's why we watch (along with the humor).
I 100% agree about getting the Maps from your phone onto the dashboard behind the wheels. Surely that is a simple OTA update you can provide

I am driving the Q4 40 s line for a month now. I find them extremely bumpy and not at all comfortable in town with typical British tarmac and potholes but comfortable on motorway. I think you should definitely think about it if you are going to use it in town mainly,
Q4 Etron rolls so much, just drove the XC40 recharge which I never thought I'd say, but it's such a breath of fresh air to drive.
Spent hours with Audi the other day looking at this and I'm on the fence about buying the "Launch" edition (which is pricey) or do I wait 6months etc. I'm sure you said more negatives than positives so was shocked at your "Buy" recommendation really - thought it would be the standard Audi "Short-List" it. Great job regardless Matt. Am going through Car Wow currently with this one :)

Had to exchange the rear Discs in my PHEV Passat GTE twice in 5 years due to rust...they are never used due to regen.
VW/Audi expects that drum brakes will last the entire Car live, which will save a lot of money for you as customer...brillant decision for an EV!

Matt, one question which came in mind. considering this car has excellent range, does it have heat pump which can help save battery during winters?

Almost certain to get the Q4 having tried an Enyaq and Ionic 5 as well. All 3 are very good cars but the Ionic 5 boot is just too small for me - it says 520 litres in the brochure but in real life it’s very shallow and the tailgate is steeply raked so it’s just not practical for the family gear. The Enyaq does have the biggest boot in real life but there’s not that much in it compared to the Q4.
However the kicker is cost - I’m a company car driver and at similar specs leasing the Q4 is cheaper than the Enyaq (at least it is on my Company scheme). This is down to the expected residual value for the Audi being far higher than the Skoda. Just need to decide colour now!
Honest opinion. The drum brakes are a good thing. They don't need much maintenance. They do not get rusty as brake disks which is a real problem if your home is anywhere with snow in the winter, even with ICE cars without regen braking. And for every day usage and even some fast cornering they are easily good enough.

@@Speed_7545 ID4 is cheaper, nicer interior and much better looking than Enyaq. Q4 is good if u want a bit more premium but you need to pay for it. ID4 and IONIQ 5 the best value for money. Still havent decided between them.
in Hungary the Enyaq has the same price as the Q4...

It s called marketing. If you want better quality you need to dig more in your pocket and buy the original E tron. The E tron Q4 is supposed to compete with mid segment ID 4, Enyaq.

I have driven an electric car with rear disc brakes, and I can confirm that they rust and that drum brakes are a better idea.

Not only do they rust, which is not pretty to look at, but i believe they also get stuck.
Which is why the Tesla Model 3 needs regular brake caliper lubrication according to the linked article.
Drum brakes fade like hell and feel completely out of place on a vehicle that is as heavy and powerful as the Q4 e-tron.
Fixed with a electronic 0.5 second application by the computer once per startup.

Ordered mine today! Had a pretty poor experience at my local audi dealer yesterday, but they made it up by giving me around 10k in options. Can't wait!

@@greggbutler9344 Yup. Long story short, they fucked up on my first visit, and I let them know I wasn't happy. When I came back they basically laid down flat. As specced, it's about 8000gbp below price as configured on their website :)

Hang on, the media spec car is ~£50K and there's no 360 camera, ACC/assistive, manual driver's seat adjustment and 1/2 a glovebox. Oh, Audi, you've outdone yourself.

So I’m 6 weeks in to having the q4 e-tron vorsprung, so top line I’m pleased. There are however some issues which having now researched are not new and are a known issue for nearly a year! Questions to ask the dealer before you buy;
- show me the Audi app and what I can do remotely? (you will be surprised by lack of functionality)
- show me how to set up user profiles? (You can’t which means every time you start you have to read a disclaimer and agree to move the message off the screen…..😖

Went to see this in Huddersfield but no-one on reception and no staff about, ended up looking through the window at one……then went to see the ID4 !

Matts love of Audis continues. This is definately not the best electric SUV you can buy. Near top end model with manual seats, hard plastic trim, capacitive buttons, not the best range for capacity and price, no rear camera, no adaptive cruise control etc. The bias is unreal

Manuel seats are very accetable and the cabin is very high quality, not much hard plastic. Currently the Q4 is the best electric SUV imo. The range isnt the best but enough.
would be nice to see a head to head comparison with the skoda enyaq. I have one and can't say the audi has more to offer, quite the contrary even
