Hi Mat, I love Lexus and did look forward to the RZ, but the BZ4X platform from Toyota doesn't give us the range that an EV should to avoid range anxiety for us not-so-young (50+) users. The car looks fantastic, both the exterior and the interior, and I sincerely hope that Toyota will get the range right next time so I can get the Lexus EV that I am dreaming about.
There has also been a lot of press recently about BZ4X platform having a range substantially less than advertised and the battery management system being a disaster for long journeys because it limited rapid charging. i.e. Toyota were more concerned about their battery warranty than delivering a useful car.
@@garethneal82 Not too often I guess. But living in Scandinavia where it occasionally does get quite cold, I probably need some kind of buffer for the heating, defrosting, etc. And with all that is written about this platform, including Subaru and Toyota, I wouldn't feel safe with such a limited range.
The Toyota is all about battery warranty....10 years, the Lexus 15 years.... . As you would expect from a Toyota... . Not one major competitor follows, says it all. These competitors are build for lease, business fleet market in mind. After 4 or 5 years the battery is finished as well as the car, not so with Toyota or Lexus.....they are build to last.
@@nickcholeva6844electric cars are terrible for a cold climate such as yours, if you want reliability and range stick to gas engines. Electric cars are notorious for not starting in cold weather (search online, don’t take my word for it). Also, if you are older and not rich, it’ll be cheaper and easier to find a mechanic to service your car should anything serious happen. Depending on a single, fully electric car in a cold northern region as an older individual seems like unnecessary and expensive risk.
In the world of premium electric lease cars, this is very well priced indeed. I've never considered a Lexus, but it might just be the replacement for my current EQC.
Have to say I’ve never used a glovebox in my life. Just something to hold clutter in but I don’t use door bins either, they only get filled with rubbish. Nice looking car 👍🏼

Very nice. I will wait for Toyota solid state battery versions: 2x+ range, ultra fast charging (0-100% less than 10 minutes), no fire risk. They are coming 2025.
No, Toyota will NOT start delivering EVs with solid-state batteries. They will MAYBE start to deliver MHEVs in 2025 with very tiny solid-state batteries, as those in MHEVs are. If you are in the market for an EV with a solid battery you will probably have to wait another six or seven years. Technology is not the problem, it is here. The problem is that solid-state batteries are really expensive to build and not a single production facility exists or is in the planning for solid-state batteries for EVs, until the end of the decade. But I completely agree with you, that solid-state batteries will be the future for EVs unless hydrogen against all odds should start to take off.
@@bigduphusaj162 I will rather drive EV than car with synthetic fuel because i can home charge 98% of time and no need to listen engine growl or do oil change etc ICE car things.
Even if these manufacturers had solid state ready to go they wouldn't release it straight away. Once it's out, you'll never need to upgrade your car for performance reasons. Minimal degradation and 500mile range.
Think Matt's shortlist must be growing, thought the Lexus would be on the consider list at best, too many misses on the being able to live with day to day especially range, interior comfort and it seemed cramped for six footers.
@@drxym Toyota invested heavily into hybrids. I have one, they’re great, reliable, well build, nice to drive and very efficient. No range anxiety. Silent in EV mode around town 👌👏
Everyone has different needs. When i get my EV for sure i only need to charge it once or twice at week. So more than enough range and cost to drive compared car i use ATM would be less than 1/4.
Two other minor problems Matt forgot to mention. One is whether or not like it's Toyota sister the bz4 it has a tendency to have the wheels fall off. Also, does it have the same problem of being unable to do fast-charging in cold weather? That would require a full battery system redesign to fix so I suspect the answer to that question is yes. That makes this vehicle absolutely untenable in colder climates.
li-ion batteries are quite tricky when charging in cold temps, especially in 0-degree C weather. It's actually really dangerous to charge li-ions at below freezing temps because they could explode. Small short, big fire.
The Model Y boot capacity number is measured all the way to the roof while in the Lexus (and most other brands) it is measure to the parcel shelf. Why aren’t you mentioning this?
What a nice overall car! And a nice review, despite one point: You are driving fast after accelerating for expressing it's speed and shortly after you are calculating a consumption guess which make it look like the Lexus range is underperformed compared to what they state. I'm sure Lexus also makes a very accurate range estimation while driving normally again and you will definitely reach the suggested total range of one charge. However as driving a Hybrid, Lexus is perfectly accurate. Not only that: the consumption which is displayed within the car is even higher than in reality, when you make an accurate check at the gas station when refilling. Try finding a competitor competing with this not even mentioning the longevity of their cars and batteries.
Like on my old Lexus, ergonomics on dashboard excellent unlike my Merc where the writing on the controls is so small you need a magnifying glass to read them.
Do the RZ have a extra storage room under the storage in the concole? I know the BZ4X has, its like a bucket you can removed and its extra storage for the stuff you dont use alot but must be in the car like the saftywest and car paper
Tbh for 80k€ i don’t really get the value proposition of this car… less than 70% the battery capacity of direct competitors like the IX or the Q8 etron and interior space is just ok in comparison. I’d rather just spend a bit more to get those or spend almost 30K€ less and get a Model Y
Having seen Tesla steal their EV market, the CEOs of BMW, Mercedes, and now Toyota, decided to compete by ... ... producing some of the ugliest monstrosities in the history of wheeled motion. "It's a bold strategy cotton"
The one thing this RZ does far better than a Tesla is attractiveness. No comparison in my opjnion. I would imagine build quality is a cut above a Tesla too, but it should be at this price.

The front corner view looks fantastic
This the best design of all EV cars.
Exterior and interior.
Hi Mat,
I love Lexus and did look forward to the RZ, but the BZ4X platform from Toyota doesn't give us the range that an EV should to avoid range anxiety for us not-so-young (50+) users.
Hopefully you have a drive and a charger so it’s full every day when you get in it. How often do you actually go further than 200 miles in one go?
Depending on a single, fully electric car in a cold northern region as an older individual seems like unnecessary and expensive risk.
best car reviews on the platform covering everything from Aston Martin valkyrie to a ford focus.

In the world of premium electric lease cars, this is very well priced indeed. I've never considered a Lexus, but it might just be the replacement for my current EQC.
I’d buy that over any other suv on the market, it looks amazing !
Enjoy pulging it in every night. 😅
The predator looking grill tho... Too many sharp lines and has no flowy lines, so it lacks any elegance. It's going to age badly.
Nissan ariya
Have to say I’ve never used a glovebox in my life. Just something to hold clutter in but I don’t use door bins either, they only get filled with rubbish. Nice looking car 👍🏼
so you just hold things in your hand when driving?
I keep napkins and deodorants in mine, some spare marker lights and a lint roller
@@jm100368 no I just drive, no need to hold things. I have a zero clutter rule.
@@torbster that's just weird. Maybe this car was made for weirdos.
Think it looks really special. Love the interior as well and over a Tesla. I'd have this any day for the build quality alone
Can you also mention the range in kilometers please? For such a large channel now with viewers all over the world, it's a shame you guys are only focussing on the UK
Looks so cool!
1:43 It looks like the front of light colored ones need to be regularly cleaned since there is not much vent in the front and the bugs have no way to go but splatter on the ventless front. 😅
I don't think I'll accept any electric cars... simply I don't like any of them... just my opinion. Thanks for the video, Mat.
Well why are you here you muppet?
16:08.... There's a digital rear view mirror. Not sure if it's standard, but it exists.
Very nice.
I will wait for Toyota solid state battery versions: 2x+ range, ultra fast charging (0-100% less than 10 minutes), no fire risk. They are coming 2025.
what 2025 when EVs are outdated and were on synthetic fuels?
Don't bet on it!
Mat is like the UK’s Doug Demuro

Probably the best car on the market right now. Lexus are fantastic, reliable, great build quality, great design, great technology
Best looking car. Almost certainly not the best EV given the well known problems with the platform and the manufacturer's aversion to EVs.
@@drxym Toyota invested heavily into hybrids. I have one, they’re great, reliable, well build, nice to drive and very efficient. No range anxiety. Silent in EV mode around town 👌👏
Great car! 👍:)
I wonder how it stacks up vs the I-Pace...
Waiting for that range test video for the RZ
The LEXUS RZ SUV imo has 355bhp and 1568kgs.
Agree, just lazy to use test car average to calculate "real life range".
Great review Mat!😸
Maybe there are better EVs but there aren't any better looking ones IMO
Not even the Hyundai ioniq 5? 😮
Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo?
True Lexus makes stunning cars
It’s got the same features on the front as the LFA I reckon it looks amazing

the normal grill looks much better than this microwave
it looks awful
Is that a petrol pump on the fuel gauge?
I still think EVs are not yet ready for primetime, but if there's any EV that would change my mind, it would be this Lexus. It's a compelling package.
yes the 179 mile range is super compelling.
It’s not really that compelling. It’s probably one of Lexus’ weakest efforts.
It is so boring
Everyone has different needs. When i get my EV for sure i only need to charge it once or twice at week. So more than enough range and cost to drive compared car i use ATM would be less than 1/4.
19:55 you can see the road is downhill in the last test so why its faster
The way he swings that stick real pro. Knows his stuff. (Teacher)
Love the design. The one feature i would want is the noise cancelling in the cabin. Hope toyota put this feature in all toyota model lineup
The ND MX5, Fisker Ocean and Nio ET5 also don’t have glovebox
I do love you style of fun but totally consumer friendly reviews

Don't know why Lexus don;t fit through hatches on some cars. My GS - F Sport has fixed rear seats (fine expected that) but no through hatch either

th-cam.com/video/MSTX_Fyx1lE/w-d-xo.html
Do the RZ have a extra storage room under the storage in the concole? I know the BZ4X has, its like a bucket you can removed and its extra storage for the stuff you dont use alot but must be in the car like the saftywest and car paper

11:50 - Immagine the trolling potential. You can just stand outside the door and lock your mates in. 😂
Really 70%?
the model Y is not $30K less.
3:44 looks like editor forgot to apply color grade to this clip😅
The Model Y costs less, is a lot faster with way more range.
But is ugly and the interior is not that nice… can’t have it all 😢
But lags behind in every other category.
And the model y will fall apart before 100K miles.
Austin evans didn't get rid of his Model Y without a reason

Having seen Tesla steal their EV market, the CEOs of BMW, Mercedes, and now Toyota, decided to compete by ...
... producing some of the ugliest monstrosities in the history of wheeled motion.
"It's a bold strategy cotton"
The one thing this RZ does far better than a Tesla is attractiveness. No comparison in my opjnion. I would imagine build quality is a cut above a Tesla too, but it should be at this price.
Fantastic video like always. Although not available in the UK yet, would you please(!) take a look at the Xpeng G9 that's coming to the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Denmark soon?
