Mat’s in the driving set of the all-new Tesla Model 3, and he’s about to find out just how different it is from the previous generation.
But first up, let’s take a look at what’s changed. When it comes to the design, there are slimmer headlights up front as well as a big central vent in the bumper. There are new alloy wheel designs as well as some specially designed tyres for the car, and around the back, there’s a set of new taillights and an updated bumper. So all-in-all it looks pretty similar, but Tesla claims this is the most aerodynamic car you can buy from its range, which helps with its efficiency!
As a result, the new Model 3 can travel further than the old car. It Long Range edition comes with the same 75kWh battery pack as before, while the Standard Range keeps the same 57kWh pack. However, the range on the Long Range car has now been increased from 374 miles to 423 miles! The car also comes equipped with two motors to produce 490hp and 490Nm.
On the inside, there are a number of new features. The seats now come with ventilation, and there’s an LED light bar that runs along the side doors and across the dash. The stalks have also been removed from the steering wheel, with indicator buttons now added to it.
All-in-all the price remains pretty similar, so you’ll still be likely to pay around £42,000 for an entry-level Model 3. But is it worth it?! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

I think they’ve done a good job with the updated design. Just a shame about them removing the stalks

I want to stay in the past! Please!!!

I'm really happy you're focusing more on how quiet it is in the cabin. This is one of the most important things for me when we talk about comfort.
I wish he would be a bit more scientific about doing the sound tests but this is at least a pretty good general idea of what to expect in terms of noise.
Yes it’s quiet but if you turn ac on above 3 you’ll start to hear the car

Thank you Matt for explaining the decibel’s logarithmic scale, many people don’t realise it!
Also the pitch of the noise is more important than the absolute volume. If they improved in that aspect, it might be quieter even though the decibels are almost the same.
@@Kobriks1 Definitely sounds a lot more muffled and comfortable. Less "plasticy" or clicky.
I was pleasantly surprised he was listening to Burna Boy! 😅👌🔥
2dB is like nothing in terms of human perception though... even though it's close to half as powerful in terms of the SPL...
Every decrease of -6dB = volume goes down by half perceived loudness@@chrisgiancola873
Interesting, it's actually louder than my Holden Commodore was, which was a 3.0l in-line 6. What is sad that it doesn't have a head up display yet and they've taken away the stalks. I'm sticking with my Model S. Also it no longer has fog lights, instead opting to have 2 lots of high beam instead.
A couple of attentions from here in the back row. There seemed to be quite a large reflection on the windshield from the new RGB strip in the cabin. You did the noise measurement on the old Model 3 with the phone on the bench and with the new one in your hand. Although, I believe that the latest Model 3 is quieter, because so many people have raved about it now. The new Model 3 is indeed more stylish and its innovations are significant, e.g. perforated seats.
It would be great to have a comparison of luxury cars noise levels, comfort levels, and interior quality.
@@jameswatadza8962maybe the high frequency motor noise contributes to that?
@@cadriver2570More like the LACK of engine/transmission noise that acts as background noise and drowns out any small squeaks/rattles
@@jameswatadza8962 Luxury ICE cars (Mercedes E-class and the like and above) are quieter than majority of EVs. Engine noise is not an issue.
@@Hyrppa95Yes, they are indeed quieter but as already mentioned by someone else. This is often due to the fact that manufacturers learned how to use the noise from the transmission, as well as the engine, and tires to cancel out interior noise. Think if it like noise canceling earphones, where the noise coming in is reduced but often not gone entirely because it is canceled out with a similar but opposite sound wave. When you synchronize the cars harmonics you can basically accomplish the same thing with less sound deadening and other materials. In an EV you don’t have the luxury of having a traditional noise engine or transmission to cancel out other noises. This leads to people often noticing noises in EVs that they would have not noticed before in a gas car. My method for getting rid of this noise is to just turn up the radio!
Tyre noise is still terrible. Barely any improvement.
I've always thought that the Model 3 is *the* car to benefit the most from a heads-up display. Totally agree with Matt.

Love that you're able to do those tests with your smartphone. :) Thanks for this! The new Model 3 is truly a beauty.
Beauty? Wow....If Elon sold sausages made out of dog poo, the Tesla-simps would eat it and claim it was the best sausage they ever had
Well upgrade & improvements looks great but as a new Tesla M3 RWD owner, dealbreaker for me would be no stalks lol particularly with extra 4-5k hike in price & extra front screen would’ve been better than the back one to look for basic thing’s where majority of them get them installed aftermarket! My take would be to wait until next year until this one gets on roads in Australia 🇦🇺😊
I got a 2024 Mod4l 3 now, and I can only tell you this about your "dealbreaker":
Stalks are overrated.
I like the highland upgrade except for two things: stalks - they REALLY should've kept it and I would rather an additional screen by the steering wheel rather than in the back. Other than that the differences in the looks, the ventilated seats, additional range, better suspension and noise muffling is great
They designed the car to be optimized for self-driving. I almost never drive manually on highways anymore, and I’m waiting for the city streets subscription to be available in my country. Once that’s released, all driving aside from parking will be done by the car.
If you still want to drive manually, I understand the concern.
@@willitbreak5825 sure. But fsd doesn't work in most of the countries yet and it's still on beta phase in USA. In Europe where highland is currently available fsd is not only not available but there's a question of whether a car without any control system other than cameras can be allowed to self drive as it's against current law. The reality is that city driving, which is where you need the stalks most, is going to be done manually for some years still.
@@willitbreak5825 "Optimized for self-driving" or just cost saving?
How many Model3 owners actually bought the FSD package?
@@willitbreak5825hahaha sure buddy. Glorified lane keep assist is sooo god. Not like other cars have that or anything…
And with the hardware tesla has (barely any) they will not be able to offer self driving in most countries.
Oh and the new Smart can park itself, meanwhile the model 3 doesn’t even have parking sensors
I agree about the stalks but for $30 from Amazon and a 10 minute installation I have a speedometer directly in front of me.
Not a fan of the turn and shift stalk removals, all else seems like good improvements. Still needs a small gauge cluster or HUD though.
How do you signal that you're about to leave a roundabout now?
@@PoneyBirds With the buttons. Not a fan either but can get used to it - people said it gets natural after some time. My main concern is more that earlier there used to be a "feature" where you can switch your driving direction to back and forward quickly when parking, which now isn't possible anymore I'd guess.
@@Murv That has been removed in the "old" model 3 aswell with a new update. You have to come to a complete stop and hit the brake when you want to switch gears.
@@willemlexvanoranje5096 Ah thanks ! Sadly don't drive one yet, only rental through carsharing a couple times so far, so I didn't know that yet.

If the Model Y has the same soundproofing, looks like a better fit (with stalks) for me. Although, I've always preferred the driving dynamics of the 3. Curious to get feedback on this.
Absolutely nailed that review. Balanced, non biased, compared against the old and current competitors. Well done guys, really good job.

Love most of the changes, but the indicators could be a deal braker. In my area there are a lot of roundabouts, where you turn the steeringwheel 100°+, and I can't really imagine that its intuitive to press the indicator in that position
So "small" roundabouts?
When you indicate on approach, then literally don't have *time* to indicate the opposite..... 🤔
@@rogerstarkey5390- literally don't have time? So...don't have time, you mean.
If you're using the onboard navigation system, won't the computer know that you're going to enter a roundabout, how far around you're going to go, and when you're going to exit? Even at a T-junction, if you're using navigation, it should know when to turn on the indicators (and which one to turn on)

1. Not get rid of the stalks
2. Introduce head up display or smaller screen in the front for speed/essential info
3. Finally add partition to close the roof. In hot days it’s a microwave and a shame having to find after market accessories

Great video and test/ comparison. As a sound guy used to looking at SPL numbers, I see (on average) more like 4 dbA difference on your noise measurements. It also looks like the Vibrometer readings are a full unit (whatever they are) lower on average! My 2 cents.
Ok
@@SeanSer Yes, I saw 3db but in any case Matt understated the improvement
Its wrong measuring the combined noise that way. If the most disturbing frequency band only, is lowered, it won’t read on the measuring if, there still is major low frequency noise.
You have to do a measuring of the whole 20hz-12khz frequency band to see in what band and how much the decline is, in the disturbing band.
yea the indicator stalks will be easy to adapt to, but they really should have put a screen in the front like model s and x that would have been way more useful no one is really in the back and if they are they are not changing my music and stuff. still waiting for juniper model Y hopefully that led strip crosses over to it makes it so much nicer and custom inside

Drove a new Model 3 this week and loved everything about it except the ride. You can feel everything in the road with new tires. Imagine how it feels after about 20k miles when the tires aren’t new.
If you get your tires balanced every so often they wouldn’t feel like ass after time.

Good idea of driving the old model first. This way also we as viewers have a direct comparison. Thank you for the video :D
I noticed that while testing the 'older' model sound db, you placed the device on the seat. In the new model, you held your device in your hands. Wonder how much that affected the results? Awesome review...
One reason I’m considering purchasing this car in 2024 is the removal of the indicator stalk. Australian and Japanese cars, the cars I am most familiar with, have the indicator stalk on the right hand side of the steering column.
Whenever I drive a car with the indicator stalk on the left hand side, inevitably the windscreen wipers come on as I try to indicate where the car is going to go.
Just been to Holland and the difference in road quality from the UK is incredible. Not one pothole, either on roads or cycle lanes. Our roads are embarrassing.
Where I live this car wouldn't last 5 mins before the suspension and underbody were knackered from all the potholes, drain covers sticking up and generally crap road conditions.
Pray for Elon as he fights the synagogue of Satan 🙏
Kudos to Matt for knowing decibels are logarithmic! 😎👌🏻
What does that mean
What does that mean?
@@sanbetski It means the scale is not linear. An increase of 3 dB is a doubling of the sound wave pressure. So 73 dB is double 70 dB and 76 dB is double 73 dB. So the increase between 73 and 76 dB is bigger than the increase between 70 dB and 73 dB. Wikipedia is your friend.
Ummm... even my 12-year-old knows decibels are logarithmic. However... I will concede that most people think logarithmic has something to do with logs of wood. Blame the education system.
@@brunosmith6925 yep, the education system sucks and people don't care. They want everything easy. Explain it to me like I'm a 5 yr old. And industries abide. 😅
The stalk is needed especially in roundabouts, we have laws that we need to signal out of a roundabout. If you start to turn in a roundabout and exit the third exit, then you start with a left signal, and then when exiting I need to change to right signal. Then I need to find the button when the wheel is turned in a weird position

As a retired police officer in Australia, with many years in the Hwy Patrol, I am concerned not having a blinker stalk, could be a problem here. When leaving a roundabout here, you must indicate. However, with the wheel being in an arc whilst turning, it will be almost impossible where to find the blinker button.
Yet surprisingly the ADRs have nothing to say about the indicator control switch despite pages on the indicator lampes themselves (placement , blink rate etc)
I agree. I have a button on my current car's steering wheel for down-shifting and it is a liability when driving. A turn signal event is so ubiquitous that for me, no turn stalk is a reason to not buy this car, even though I love everything else about it.
maybe 1% of people do that 😂
thats why you use the blinker before hand, lmao. this isn't BMW logic here where you use the blinker as you're already half way into the other lane
Maybe the thinking is that you keep your hands at 3:00 and 9:00 the entire time? That said, we don’t have a lot of roundabouts where I live, so I haven’t paid much attention to this use case.
I did test drive a Model S yesterday to see if I could get used to the signal light buttons, and they weren’t awful. I think I’d get used to them. I didn’t love the mode selection being moved to the touchscreen, but I suspect I’d get used to that too.
I do love my 2021 Model 3 LR AWD, but I also love the sound of many of the improvements announced, so I’m torn.

He’s so funny…it has to be a pleasure road tripping with this gang. I wish you could have shown the frunk and cargo area to see if anything was added/changed/ or improved. But overall the car looks so much better and finally Tesla added ambient lighting for this one model, may not be like Mercedes or Audi interior ambient lights, but better something than nothing I suppose. 🤗
I think it's even tastier to use ambient lighting just a bit without making the whole cockpit look like a candy. And even then during the night it will make a difference to have it on with the color you chose.
It's almost there, but skeptic about the noise. Other reviewers are saying it's better but it's still not good (like the eTron or i4). I wish there was an air suspension option, or add on. Even if it's just to capture demand. At the end of the day you need to decouple the vibrations to significantly lower NVH.
the thing with the new wheel its worse then the old one because when you're driving around a corner and with the old tesla just use the stalk and easy way to use blinker but with the new one when you're turning u have to look around the wheel to find the blinker button so i think all cars should still use stalks to indicate so it doesnt confuse anyone
Just some nitpicking from a Norwegian: No, it's not a months salary, but it could be for some people if you earn very little and go very fast. But it's expensive. Doing 61 kph in a 50 zone is a 5400 NOK which is £402. Most speeding fines are between £200 and £1 000. Getting caught using your phone while driving is 9700 NOK or £723. Drunk driving will however be calculated by your salary. Also, at 6:49 the Audi that passed you were in the right because you're supposed to keep to the far right of the roundabout if you're going straight forward and there's no left exit ;-)
I like your fines wish we could adopt them here in the us. Fines based on income need to be the standard.
As I am not from Norwegian, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Man I really don't like those narrower new headlights. They make the car seem taller from the front view. Glad they didn't get too crazy with the design overall. I like the TESLA lettering in the back too, a common aftermarket mod. I prefer stalks over the weird haptic signal buttons, though that could be just what I'm used to. The taillights look okay. The door handles should always be body-color.
Hopefully the rear view from the driver's seat is better too....because in the current Model 3 it's got quite a high trunk line and it's hard to see 'over' it, with new camera view to the rear or anything.
They also removed the front fog lights in the new Tesla model 3 compared to the older models
When the screen freezes, you need to reset it before you can drive/use the wipers which is not good in case of an emergency
I've had my Model-3 since mid 2019 and don't know what you mean by "screen freezing"? Is that something that happens in your car? It has never happened in mine.

This may help you.
@@brunosmith6925Sometimes the screen becomes black. There is a spécial procedure in the manual to follow in order to reset the screen when it happens.
Replacing the gear stalk by a swipe on the screen is dumb.
The moment you pressed the horn and the sound is 'actually' outside of the cabin: mind-blowing!
That’s the part that blew my mind also

I loved the song from Burna Boy when you tested the speakers
Great video and very informative 👍🤣 I just subscribed. Thanks
Welcome to Norway 🇳🇴 Matt!
Hope you enjoying the nice weather there.
Merket det lol
No indicator stalk will be a deal breaker for some, me included. I never could get used to the indicator buttons in the new model S either. It's a stupid and dangerous design, forcing you to look down to figure out where the buttons are every time while in a roundabout and turning the wheel a few times (typical hand over hand movement). This only works well when going straight.
How tight are your roundabouts? I never had to turn the wheel more than 90 degrees. And I always have trouble with the stalks, because when I am in the roundabout the wheel is turned, so my hands are too far away from the stalks. I have to let go of the wheel and find the stalk, which is annoying and dangerous. Much better to have the buttons at the exact same place all the time.
@@andrasbiro3007 What kind of roundabouts do you have? In a small roundabout you will have to turn the wheel several turns. Especially if you come from a right turn and then go into a roundabout and then out on the last exit.
I think you got it backwards. A stalk is ALWAYS at the same location. It never moves. I can find it with my eyes closed. The buttons on the other hand DO move.
Depending on the angle of the wheel they will some times be on the left side, some times on top, other times they will be somewhere on the right side, or at the bottom, in which case they will also be inverted. I have been using the new S a lot and can never get used to this, and I can certainly not hit the correct button without looking down fist, because they keep moving around when the wheel is turned.
If you're able to intuitively figure out where the buttons are without looking down then you must be some kind of savant or psychic perhaps. Good for you! That's not the case for most people. I'd love to test this by placing some cardboard over the wheel so you can't see it, and then have you turn it a couple of times using the hand over hand movement, and see if you can find the right button on the first attempt when you can't see it. I'm a bit skeptical..
In any case, it's a bad design when a lot of potential buyers find it to be a deal breaker. That's not good for sales. If you look at European comment sections then you'll see that a lot of people are totally turned off by this. It wouldn't surprise me if the EU eventually comes up with some regulation that makes this illegal when they see that it causes people to stop using their indicator lights in roundabouts.
Ferrari doesnt seem to agree with
@@FireWalkMusic
1. I don't think I ever had to. Maybe your country has tiny roundabouts. I know one really small in my area, but I can't remember how much I have to turn the wheel there, I'll pay attention next time.
2. Your hand moves as you turn the wheel. You can't operate the stalks without letting go of the wheel. And if you do that after you already turned the wheel, you have to blindly move your hand back where the stalk is. I don't know how you do it, it's always an issue for me. OK, I drive fast in roundabouts, because it's so much fun to do in a Tesla.
3. The location of the buttons is trivial. They are always at the same place relative to your hand. And you can feel their general position because at every other place there's a hole.
And knowing which one is which is easy too. It's the direction you are turning the wheel. The upper one is right and the lower one is left.
As for hand-over-hand turning, you do the signaling before you do that. Pretty much the only time you have to signal while turning is in a roundabout.
4. The Model S and X had this setup for a few years now, and I don't remember many complaints. Owners complained about they yoke, but even that wasn't all of them, many love it. The only criticism about the buttons was poor quality, and that was addressed in the new Model 3.
And Tesla is not the only one doing this. As the commenter above said, Ferrari has a similar setup, they have big paddle shifters where the stalks would be, so they too have all the controls on the wheel itself.
Great review. The indicator stalk thing is an error. Safety issue on exiting roundabouts.
I’m stuck between choosing the current model y rwd, room and comfort. Or the new model 3, longer range newer tech. I drive 115 miles per day, mostly at 70 mph. Do you expect a big difference?
You'll have to do the range test from 100 to 0% with this one :)
The quoted range figure he gave initially is the WLTP range and not the EPA range. This means that it is grossly exaggerated. Likely he would get about 380 miles of total range if driven properly, which is still better than previously but no where near what he stated.
It isn't possible to go to 0%. The battery management won't allow a total discharge, in order to protect the battery.

Every addition of 3 decibels means "twice as loud" as dB uses a logarithmic scale. So the noise levels have quite been reduced! Great and fun review!
Technically you are correct: 3 dB increase in SPL has twice the power in watts.
But: Our ears doesn't adhere to any scientific scale... So psychoaccustic scientists has worked out that for any sound to APPEAR twice as loud to a human, it must be around 10 dB's higher.
@@ozone77db?
“Experiments have shown that an increase of somewhere between 5 and 10 dB will sound twice as loud:
most people heard 5 dB as less than twice as loud
most people heard 10 dB as at least twice as loud”
I was always told that 3 dB difference is the minimum one can tell, 10 dBs are twice as loud.
@@SBM200612 That is excactly what science have found, yes!

@@ExplainedSimply12???? What is this to do with motoring? How do you draw Elon Musk's talented employees through this mud? Tesla's not about one person for God sake.
The decibel is sound energy/pressure or dBA and although 1 to 2 dB is okay, my guess is that the focussed is on a reduction of the Highest Frequencies leaking into the cabin, so they've used materials that would block/reduce certain frequencies.
From the video it looked more like 3 db, quite alot
Being logarithmic 3db is huge - and the frequencies reduced are mostly mids and lows as high frequencies are easy to cancel. Proof? Just block your ears and all you hear are lows. 👂🏻
2 to 3 dB doesn't seem like much, but remember that the decibel scale is logarithmic. That means that 3 dB less would be half the sound energy.
Remember. Every 10 dB is 10x louder. So 3 dB is HALF as loud.
I would not agree that a flip phone would be any way accurate enough to prove one way or another. He should get a proper meter.

All those hard interior surfaces and glass roof wouldn't help with the noise. They've done well isolating the outside noise, but it still sounds echoey inside.

As an owner of a late 21 3 LR the ventilated seats and exterior upgrades are good. Still wish it had a HUD though. Do these upgrades go far enough…?
This is the reason I subscribed to CarWow. Great reviews and also, great personality doing the reviews :)
Hello. It might have been an idea if Tesla had a button on the left side of the steering wheel for turning left and the right hand button on the right side for turning right. You get tips Elon about it. When we use navigation, the turn signals should come on automatically when we have to drive out of a roundabout, turn left and turn right at regular intersections. You can tip Elon about it too 🚙😊
Idk removing the the stalks is too much that is a satisfying function this might not be the play if I were to get this tesla damn hopefully they bring them back
