I think people would buy the Z bodies to take advantage of the lenses. Thank you Jared for putting this together. Usability is tough to gage and highly personal but a few sample comparisons might be beneficial. Unfortunately it seems likely that having mostly caught up to what the three year old A7III can do Sony will release the A7IV and then Nikon (and probably Canon) will be playing catch-up again. Alex, I’m with you 100%. I’ve watched all of Jared’s reviews, and even had the R6 ordered. I called and chanced my order to the Z6 II, and have never looked back.
16:10 you made a mistake when you said Nikon allows you to touch and drag focus on screen. You meant Canon and Sony, not Nikon an Sony. You can’t drag focus on Nikon.
Your review failed to mention Nikon’s equivalent ZTF adaptor opening up the Z cameras access to Huge library of both Nikon and 3rd party lenses. I don’t deny Canon may have technical superior features, but the Canon’s price puts it out of my budget... the Z6II lets me do everything I need of it at a price I can afford
@@irutgers Yes. There are many really good screw drive lenses, and they are much cheaper. Btw, some of them don't have a modern equivalent, like 180 mm 2.8D lens.

Regarding E-mount lenses .. Not only the 3rd party native lenses but since you already mentioned Canon's own first party adapter ... you forgot to mention that both Nikon and Sony have these two for their respective F and A mount glass as well. And with the E-mount you also get the 3rd-party adapters for just about everything including vintage Leica glass on mounts like M42 up to even Canon EF glass (and this with full AF capabilities and minimal drawbacks). Sure, Canon's adapter may be more seamless and less confusing or limited than the other two systems but at least it's worth the mention that the other systems also have their own equivalents; and with Sony you even get a much wider selection of lenses AND mounts/adapters to choose from.
Upgraded to the Z6ii, very happy so far with how it performs and thankfully the dude that bought my Z6 off of me was willing to let me keep the Nikon battery and give him the 4 3rd party batteries that I had (because they weren't compatible with the Z6ii)
I don't own any Nikon glass, but I think it's worth mentioning that if you buy the Z6 ii from B&H photo right now, you can get an F-to-Z mount adapator for just $50. So if you were already a Nikon owner, you can keep using for F glass with about the same level of (in)convenience as the Canon users adapting their EF mount lenses on R bodies.
Hey Jared, congrats for your channel. Can I give you a suggestion? I speak Portuguese and my english is not so good. Some times it's difficult to understand what you say. Can you enable the legends (automatically generated by youtube) in your videos?
If you are a beginner and want a full frame mirror less camera that is good for video and photography the A7 III is not the best but it is damn good even in 2020. The inexpensive body, inexpensive SD cards and inexpensive 3rd party lenses make it the best bang for the buck hands down!

Picked up a Nikon z6ii a few months ago as an upgrade from my Nikon D610 DSLR. Really loved all of the neat mirrorless features, and thought the autofocus was pretty good … … until I realized it wasn’t. I tried recording selfie-style video with AF-F and the z6ii constantly, stubbornly would stay stuck on the background. I’d jump around, wave my hands in front like a madman, but if there was something the camera found compelling in the background, it would just. Not. Let. Go. Frustrating. So now I’m waiting on a delivery of a Canon R6, and taking photos of my Z gear to sell it on eBay. I’m a bit sad. I really wanted to love the z6ii. I really did. But it just couldn’t do even the most basic things I needed it to do.
On the digitalrev chanel there are videos of pro photographers making use of old/low quality cameras yet obtaining meaningfull pictures. Therefore, indeed, photography is about who is behind the camera, with what intent, what to express. They even happened to do it with the lego camera or the barbie doll with a camera included inside it (about 0.3mpx and no way to manually set the iso, apperture, etc; when I say inside the doll, I mean the sensor is in its belly).
I enjoyed the video, as always! I appreciate all the background work you put into making these videos. I’d love to see a comparison between the high-res models (the Sony a7riv vs. Canon R5 vs. Nikon Z7ii). Or a revamped comparison between Sony cameras (maybe once the a7iv is released).
Hey Jared Polin why didn't you use the Nikon Z7II. I mean canon ER 6 is the top of line for Canons and the Sony at the time the A7S was the top of the line. Nikon z6II isn't the top of line for Nikon. Just wandering why you didn't use the ZII??
That, plus the fact that it is EXTREMELY future proof. Glass is expensive so its great there are cheaper options via 3rd parties, and all of the a7 and a9 cameras use the same mount so its a smooth transition to the next Sony body 5-10 years from now. Personally, i feel like that is the most important as a semi-pro photographer.
A lot of these types of videos highlight something that I feel has been true for quite awhile now: It's much harder to find a bad camera. Any of these cameras would be excellent for most scenarios. And if you need one for a very specific reason or feature then you're probably not needing to look at a video like this anyway. Brand wars are stupid and lazy. The criticisms are largely hollow and don't hold up to scrutiny. Oh, this line has a better evf? Who cares. Oh, they have a wider selection of lenses? How many lenses do you really need. That one can shoot at 1 billion ISO? If you're regularly in circumstances where you're shooting beyond, say, 6400 iso then you're looking for a more specialized camera anyway. It's a great time for photography/videography because there are so many great options out there. So how do you choose? Prices help, but the diff in prices isn't that great. I would say that you should get what you're friends and family have. If you know people who shoot Sony, get a Sony. Why? Because they're more likely to have gear that you can use. Someone might let you use one of their Sony lenses. Or even sell it to you for cheaper that you'd likely get at a store.
One thing that bothers me when people (not only you Jared) analyze the mount in the cameras is that they do so solely from the perspective of lens availability and lens price. The Z mount, being larger, allows for better quality images regardless of the lens, since it allows for more light to get into the camera and all the lens elements are closer to the sensor (shorter path length) than in all the other cameras.
Hey Jared. Im the infamous "is 20MP enough to blow up when I need to crop?" guy. THANKS FOR MAKING THIS!!! I couldnt wait - upgraded from D750 only 6 months after buying it to the R6 last month based on two comments you made: (Re: Eye-AF) "Getting shots I otherwise wouldve missed." BYE NIKON. And (Re: Sony) - not comfortable to hold. Eye-AF what a world of difference. True next gen stuff. Like a car vs a horse, full stop. How can you even consider Nikon without Eye-AF?? Shameful. R6 is so good I almost feel like I havent earned the shots Im getting. Like bright clear photos in the dark no flash while actively chasing a baby. Lotta stabilization helping me out. Only caveat - Im a newbie and almost returned the R6 until I realized I bought the absolute garbage variable aperture lens. Canon makes the 24-105 in F4-6.1 (variable, kill yourself) and F4 (fixed). Wonder how many newbies will buy the variable lens unknowingly and accept bad photos or return the camera. Cant wait to buy some RF glass. Jared would be cool for you to do a video comparing the costs and benefits of RF vs EF glass. Probably some great deals out there for EF glass now.
And had to update the EVF to max frame rate on the R6. At lower frame rate the EVF is unimpressive, painful if you are switch from an OVF. Vari angle touchscreen on the R6 is cool for tripod remote trigger group portraits. But painstaking for shooting kids. Tilting touch screen was much better for quickly deploying to get low or high shots. A screen that could do both would be badass!
@@jaymontez78 not yet as I haven't found one in my area. I'm now using Sigma 85mm f1.4 new version lens though it has some distortion issue can be fixed in post. I'm thinking to pick 24 70 sigma or 28 75 tamron in this year.
Damn. Never been more tempted to go with the Canon, even though I've been leaning toward Sony because of their awesome third party lens choices. I'm already a Canon shooter, so the R6 may just 'feel' right. Comparing menu systems/interfaces could have helped.
I'm a Sony user (A7iii and A7Riii) to my Sony fan boys please don't hate the comparison. This just show how advance how Sony was almost 3 years ago. Canon EOR RP and Nikon Z6/7 were terrible start, kinda like with Sony w/ battery life in A7/A7ii. Sony users remember we have so much more lens to choose from, Sony-Tarmon-Sigma compared to Canon and Nikon mirrorless. You know Sony won't just sit there any take backseat to any company. Look at Chelsea Northrup, Jared Polin, and many other switch to Sony when Nikon and Canon first gen mirrorless didnt come close to Sony. So just wait till Sony A7IV comes out and A9iii. A7Siii was a complete success. Congrats to Canon users who finally got some great Mirrorless bodies and their Canon lens are beast. Cant wait to see what Sony offers to beat Canon hahaha.
I think so, just bought new A7III a month ago and when I was watching old guides from Tony, Manny and others the focusing was behaving differently and it was necessary to have dedicated button. Now the camera focuses on eye automatically at least for me :D
I have mine setup so when I’m focusing and I have eye tracking on it’ll default to tracking the eye when half pressing the shutter, if it doesn’t see the eye I’ll use my eye autofocus button (I use the AF-ON button) if I want it to search harder for an eye
Thanks for your valued insight into these 3 cameras. I've been shooting Canon since I got my first Canon AE-1 Program in 1979. I've got several pieces of Canon and 3rd party glass for Canon which would make it very expensive for me to switch from Canon (which is why I was interested in watching this video). And, considering all of the specs and features of the R6 vs the other 2 bodies, it seems the additional $500 (over the Nikon) will be worth my investment (since I also won't be forced to buy a whole new inventory of lenses). Thanks, again for your valued analysis.
Totally agree with focusing - i have my R5 set to Eye AF, with the SET button custom set to pull focus to the centre of frame for the times the AF picks the wrong subject - between these two options there is rarely a time the shot will be missed, and many times it has got a moment that there was only an extremely small window to capture... as far as cards go the CFExpress cards are really nice - I had to take 140 GB to a client, as they were nearby, the transfer only took about 3 minutes over CFexpress / USB C
Since when do you need two card readers for two card types? I have one card reader with XQD and SD. I have an older one with SD, CF and micro SD for my D300s CF cards.
I dunno about the lens check mark, Fro. True that, Sony has a selection of third party lenses. But, Canon has the least expensive native glass! I dunno about the EVF check mark, Fro. The biggest complaint with mirrorless cameras is EVF blackout during continuous shooting. The Canon has no blackout compared to other two bodies.
Great video... lens affordability is a huge factor with these systems. Used EF (with the outstanding Canon adaptor with ring controller), and 3rd Party Sony offerings for me personally make Canon and Sony the more attractive options. I think the A7IV will put the money ball squarely back in Sony's court (with Tammy glass it's the most economic option as well). 30 mp with 12 fps is my sweet spot.
The need for a high capacity buffer may be not so critical for taking continually photos for tens of seconds like you take a movie but in those situations where the decisive moments in a long period of time are a few seconds apart in which the images are still being recorded in the card. In other words when the interval between the bursts is not big enough.
One thing you missed Jared, how the camera's switch back and forth from photo to video. The Nikon does this really well. As a hybrid shooter this is so important. According to Taylor Jackson who liked the R6 he said he wouldn't use it for this because it doesn't save all the settings automatically like Nikons do.
Yeah I was going to say, the Nikon should be given the win in the segment due to RAW video, best switching ability for hybrid use, and lack of overheating issues that the Canon has.
It reminds me reading comparison reports of cars in Germany between Mercedes, BMW and Audi. There is always a winner but at the end of the day it comes down to personal preferences as the differences are minor as they all build very good cars, respectively very good cameras in this case!
Good photographers anticipated the action...know your subject and put yourself in position to catch the moment. Photography is a lost art...technology has made everyone a photographer cause they can point a camera at a person and the camera catches the eye and then all you have to do is press the shutter and shoot off 20 rounds and pick the best of the bunch, crop, adjust exposure and show how awesome you are. I use new tech also but I still use my D3 and D700 from time to time. I no longer have a film camera.
@@marcusalanphotography694 I wish it were that easy. With birds, for example, you still have to know your subject, anticipate its action, and be in position to catch it. But being in position to catch the action and actually catching it are different things, especially when the subject is small and fast moving. Eye AF gives me one less thing to worry about. If you can't anticipate what your subject might do and be ready for it, all the tech in the world won't help.
@@JohnDrummondPhoto so there were no birds in flight photos before this. My point is the joy of photography used to be in the achievement of the work and knowledge you put in. Now all you do is aim and shoot. It is the equivalence now of fishing with and aggressive worm that attacks the fish for you. Where is the sport in that. Don’t get me wrong, I use the tech also but the greater joy and achievement comes from the work I do without all the assistance.
I just bought the sony this week and the eyeAF does activate automatically without having to touch a button on the back. Maybe update the firmware Fro ;)

Was able to cover multiple events no problem with the original z6, but I welcome the updated AF performance with the z6ii as it's made my shooting experience a lot better in low-light. Considering that I did tons of events from the D7000, to the D750, the z6ii is a real winner!
That's really good to hear. I shoot with the D750 now and I'd love to stay with Nikon to use my lenses but reviews like these really make it hard.

If you are a beginner and want a full frame mirror less camera that is good for video and photography the A7 III is not the best but it is damn good even in 2020. The inexpensive body, inexpensive SD cards and inexpensive 3rd party lenses make it the best bang for the buck hands down!

Great vid Jared.. i was hoping for something like a conclusion graph or check boxes, something like that at the end but its still a good vid..
U didn't compare about the picture & video quality of these cameras.........?????
I thought that was strange too, but I’m honestly not surprised.
The Canon R6 also shoots 120fps at 1080p. It wasn't listed on the spec chart, but will do it. (Without audio.)
The fact that the a7iii is being compared to two cameras that came out in the last three months means that it already won!
Lots of mention of the Canon R6 using the 1Dx processor, but doesn't the Z6ii use 2 of the same processors that Nikon use in the D6?
I still prefer the Kodak Fiesta camera.
Why only wind tunnel ... You still missed the best test of them all

Thought the always active eye AF was updated via firmware on the A7iii over a year ago? Or was that something else?
I think so, just bought new A7III a month ago and when I was watching old guides from Tony, Manny and others the focusing was behaving differently and it was necessary to have dedicated button. Now the camera focuses on eye automatically at least for me :D
I have mine setup so when I’m focusing and I have eye tracking on it’ll default to tracking the eye when half pressing the shutter, if it doesn’t see the eye I’ll use my eye autofocus button (I use the AF-ON button) if I want it to search harder for an eye
dunno if im running latest firmware but on mine you can turn it on and off in the menus
Yes it works with half press since firmware update.
My own camera us the Pentax k 20d and I tried the Canon R6 for the first time I was blown away by the sutter speed...
Which one is more weatherproof ?
Jared, the D6 has just 1 Expeed 6, why not mention that the Z6ii has 2 Expeed 6's given you noted the R6's used of the 1DX3 chip? ;P ;)
This just made me want the R6

I dunno about the lens check mark, Fro. True that, Sony has a selection of third party lenses. But, Canon has the least expensive native glass!
I dunno about the EVF check mark, Fro. The biggest complaint with mirrorless cameras is EVF blackout during continuous shooting. The Canon has no blackout compared to other two bodies.
Blackout and viewfinder lag would be an excellent thing to see compared.
Finally an objective comparison. Nikon is what I used and I feel it was unfairly reviewed before until now.
What? The R6 saves settings for hybrid use, just like the R5 and even the EOS R does.
@@headman9999 it doesn't save your last settings see Taylor Jackson's review he explains it better than me.

"Oh, but what did we do back in the day when we didn't have that autofocus system?" Missed a lot of shots, probably. I know I did.
