Since a few people have asked: The back and forth tests after the autofocus section are not to be evaluated for image quality. That's only a monitoring/info display recording, not a 4K clean feed. It's the only way to show what the eye tracking is doing. And the colors are just a Rec.709 monitoring LUT, not a final grade. I only included it to evaluate autofocus performance, not compare image quality to my main angle. Hope that helps! 🤓👍

@@BoReynolds for shooting what exactly? Overall you can't go wrong with either but I'd say Sony has way more good lenses available so keep that in mind, unless you only need 1 or 2 lenses.

This helps, but to be honest, your result on the R6 video is similar to what I get on my R5 shooting 8k raw. Colors look bad, skin transitions are harsh, and lot of noise in the dark areas. I just assumed that I am doing something completely wrong. Can you show us how to go from what your R6 just gave us over to something more similar to your Sony A cam? Is it even possible?

Great video. RE dynamic range: it's become clear that Canon hasn't moved beyond using a 12 bit A/D conversion in video mode. Canon Log 3 can encode roughly 14 stops if you have it to encode. There's actually nothing wrong with 12 bits as long as you know what that entails, but does sacrifice a fair amount of exposure flexibility when shooting in uncontrolled lighting situations. Other than the other standard Canon annoyances, as both an R6 and R6II owner, I can happily confirm that the mark II variant is a very good camera for both stills and video for existing Canon shooters. I wouldn't be switching platforms over it, but if you're already a Canon shooter looking to get into RF mount from EF, this camera is a great entry.

Solid video. I am looking to buy a full frame camera and a welder soon, I find it very entertaining how stunningly good the production value is on the camera review videos and how filmed on an old cell phone leaned against a toolbox a lot of the welder videos are. You video was excellent and informative, I plan to pick up a A7 IV here in the next couple days. Very tempted by the Canon R6 ii but the native lens selection and extra resolution gave Sony the edge for me. Also first video of yours I have seen and I am subscribing now, tight dialog, informative and well edited.

Note that the heat tolerance setting from the R3 was brought to the R5 in a later firmware update (along with a lot of other improvements on the heat tolerance front). The R5 similarly does 12-bit 5K crop RAW or 10-bit 8K FF. The reason as I recall is that the Ninja V+ can't handle enough bandwidth on HDMI to get 12-bit ProRes RAW over 5K. That's what I had heard, anyway.
Also, on third-party stuff, I use a lot of Sigma EF lenses on my R5 and they're great. There's good reason to believe, I think, that we'll see Sigma make RF lenses in due course. The Metabones EF-RF speed booster is also great for the crop cameras and crop modes, in third party accessories on RF (though that's not a lens in the *usual* sense, it *is* technically a lens).

    • @gavthane
      @gavthane 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

This comment is a little muddled up.
The R5 does 12bit RAW in 8K internally, but externally when using the Ninja V+, the 8K is 10bit prores RAW.
The R5 cannot do 5K RAW internally, it’s only externally but it is 12bit, unlike the external 8K, and up to 60p.

Hi Gerald, thanks for reviewing this camera. I notice in the dynamic range test, the Xyla patches appears to be reddish in comparison with test of other cameras. Besides, the imatest noise plot also shows that the red channel has much higher magnitude compared with other channcels. This is also not the case for other cameras where R G B Y have similar magnitude. I wonder why does it show up like this? Is this an experimental error? Does it affect dynamic range test results? Thanks.

One thing I do like about the Canon's is the body ergonomics - the curves feel more natural in the hand. I've used a Sony A7II and A7III from an employer, and it feels more like taking pictures/video with a brick in the hand. Also Sony's meter display threw me off a bit, because I was so used to that horizontal graph showing the "needle" moving left and right to show if my exposure is correct. To me, that's a more tactile way to show *how* "off" or "on" the exposure is rather than just some numbers changing, and I'm glad Canon kept the real meter look. Now if either mfr. could include shutter angle and waveform/vectorscope like Panasonic/LUMIX...but I'm leaning away from them b/c of the lack of lens selection and b/c their phase detect autofocus is still in its infancy, and their burst rate is nothing to write home about.

Great video as usual! As a new Canadian TH-camr, I’m always looking to more experienced TH-camrs, especially Canadian ones, for tips, tricks, and new techniques to raise my game. I’ll have to try that Canon move vigourously shaking my camera left and right at 60 fps. Never thought of that one before! 😊

So I have a eos r and I already use the atomos ninja with it for the 10 bit 4k and I use the speed booster from metabones so I get a really solid image and focal length but I wanna up grade due to the age now been a while but I use a lot of older sigma lenses like the 18-35mm 50mm art
35mm art even the 30mm art and some canon lenses also but older ef ones does this camera focus right with those lenses

Question you mention aps-c 10bit is this only for video? can you change the crop on this camera from full frame to crop 1.6 to shoot photos, lets say you got a 100mm lens and you want to get a aps-c field of view can you do this on this camera and also on the r6?

Gerald, congrats on all your videos.. help a lot always... please.. i have R5C, R6, and R6 MKII, and recording a video using all three cameras with Ninja V in 4K 29.97. Only R6 gets some problem with overheating and also, my ninja V gets texted with a yellow signal and tells me had a drop (and after some drop, stopped to record). I updated the version of firmware in my ninja and will do a test .. at the studio i tried to change the media (SSD) and change the cable but had the same problem... do you had something like this using R6 (std) and some tips to avoid that? thank you so much again for your help wit

You can set white balance by setting it in picture mode (take a picture) and then turning video mode and the custom white balance is there.

yeah this is what gerald referred to, this method is ancient and bad. even 90s ENG cameras can white balance with a press of a button but none of canons photo bodies can

Sorry I am a bit of an amateur but I am about to buy the R6 Mark II and am a photographer/videographer. I would think the 4k60 mode I would most likely use for slow-motion (in post). Is that accurate? If so, I wouldn't be shooting 40+ minutes at a time with that, most likely.

Another point worth noting: usually full-frame cameras feature not just more background blur, but also have an advantage in image quality, but since the dynamic range in the R6 ii is artificially limited, the R7 can have exactly the same dynamic range, while costing $1,000 less.

@@duck.cr3 I can't speak to the exact accuracy of this when it comes to the R6 and R7, but in general your statement is right...for photos. In video it's much more complicated than that; for example the A7iv maintains great low light ISO performance than the R7 by more than a stop.

@@duck.cr3 1 stop is the difference between an f/4 zoom and an f/2.8 zoom, which also tend to have roughly $1000 in the difference. I think a single stop makes less difference now than it did back when cameras didn't like to shoot above ISO 800, but it's still a value proposition that plenty of people are willing to shell out for.

Its interesting to see that dynamic range of fuhi xH2 in non oversampled 4k is still better then the one in Canon R6 mark 2. Makes Fuji really not a bad choice now.

The dynamic range of the xh2 is not really better…but canon made the choice to limited to clog3 which is more easy and faster to color grade. Don’t forget that after color grading, the final image DR will be around 9-10 stops even lower…

    Hi Gerald,
    Good review as always.
If the R6m2 is like the R5, when you open the memory door, there is a small hole there. The hack to keep the camera on is to put a small grommet inside it to trick it to think the door is closed and then you can hot swap the memory cards.
I found this hack when I tried to use a dummy CF express and had to keep the door open. Was trying to figure out how to remove all variables that could make the R5 overheat.
    Give it a try!

the switch itself is good, the problem for some is the new position and if you use two cameras for example r5 and r6mk2 it can be confusing.
