I’ve been using external power via a FX LION Nano Three, and it has worked quite well. I can also power my monitor and transmitter with it (USB-C for the camera, USB-A for the Hollyland, D-TAP for the monitor). What’s nice is that even if the V-Mount battery dies, the battery in the cam acts as a backup. Thanks for the great video and for doing these dynamic range tests.
@@patrick.munich the two firmwares is an absolute game changer to me. Pretty much everything that drove me crazy about the R5’s video mode is fixed here, plus we get Face Only. I can’t believe the price:value ratio.
@@pickleydoo Yeah same here and I love the oversampled 4k60. I really underestimated the cinema OS and it's customizability. I use the custom buttons for quickly toggling focus peaking, false color, waveform and zebra all the time.
@@patrick.munich exactly. The oversampled footage in all modes is great. I had gotten used to using the crop 24p on the R5 for the best quality with no overheating. This opens up a lot of possibilities. It’s so customizable and all those functions almost replace the need for an external monitor (except for the size). I was going to get a second one for this camera but I think for now I’ll keep the Ninja V on the R5 and see how that works for me.
Hi Gerald, great review as always. Just wanted to say that I really appreciated you mentioning dynamic range with different noise reduction settings applied. (For instance, Sony mirrorless has great dynamic range but is always a little bit boosted because the NR is automatically applied heavily in-camera.) This helped things be a little bit more 'apples to apples.'
@@PatrickBaker Oh so at 4k 60 it oversamples, and maybe from 120p too in full frame mode, just the quality is not as good, but still oversmpled, so the a1 4k 60 is not aversampled on ly from 4.1 or 4.3k, this is from 8.1 or something k, as i heard, right? I know the gh6 though its a smaller sensor, 4 times size reduction, but the 4k 120p is oersampled from 5.7k, how about the z9 and r3 oversampled 4k 120p? are they oversampled if so from which res? What camera has the best 120p 4k to date? Also a wuasiton which supports super 35 6k 60p and 4k 120p? I know the a1 only 4k 60pp oersampled from 5.8k but how about its 4k 120p in super 35 mode, and how about the other? Please help somebody!!! :))))
Not sure why no one has mentioned using the battery grip with the R5C, it’s what I order with mine. Gives me 2x the battery power and If I ever need more I’ll buy a few extra batteries. It’s how I used my R for over 3 years. In fact I find it a bit too small without a battery grip and front heavy with longer lenses. Maybe as a I’m a 50/50 photo and video shooter, it just makes sense to me to use the grip.
You can just use CLOG2 for RAW as Gerald showed. Canon says it doesn't make sense because the dynamic range is under 14 stops, but Gerald found the dynamic range to be better than with CLOG3 and I also saw another video where the CLOG2 is better. th-cam.com/video/R0ktq1-a8vA/w-d-xo.html
Clog2 makes much more sense for cameras like the C70 with dual gain output that gives clean shadow detail. A lot of the DR boost from clog2 is from the shadows.
Gerald, clutch on the 5min mark suggesting changing the auto focus response to +3. I have had the R5C for a month now and it has bothered me how the auto focus can’t keep up with the R3.
Great video, appriciate!!! Undone. I have some questions wants to consult you. 1. Concerning the Dynamic Range chapter, in this video 12:50, mentioned "ST RAW + NR, ISO800 - CLog2" scenario. I saw the frame size shows "3632x107 crop of 3840x2160", what does it mean? As R5C only can shot RAW as 8K or 6K or 2K sizes, not able to shot as 4K size, how to make 4K RAW in this R5C camera ? or you originally shot with 8K or 6K, then put it into 4K timeline in Davinci Resolve (or maybe Premiere Pro) and make timeline resolution 'smaller' to 4K ? if so, take Davinci Resolve for example, shall I should change the Project Settings in Davinci Resolve like following ? a). Shot footage as 8K or 6K RAW files b). Project Settings --> Master Settings --> Timeline resolution = 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD c). Project Settings --> Image Scalling --> Resize filter = Customer, Method = Lanczos PS: I choose Lanczos method, some material in the website shows Lanczos or Mitcheel are the better way to 'smaller' or 'enlarger' the footage image, if original size is different compare to the Timeline resolution size. Not sure it is correct or not. 2. Concerning the "Noise Reduction - NR" here, ST RAW + NR, means shot footage as 8K or 6K RAW, and make Noise Reduction just in Davinci Resolve stage ? I love my R5C! using the R5 since it came out made it super easy to switch over. i don't even use the c300mkiii or c70 for run and gun shoots any more for my car content!
@@Mintyseden Even with those I would have to add the CPL for the car windows and reflections so I will already be used to adding a screw-on filter to my lenses, so the ND filter I have also has a CPL on it as well so the no inter ND is not a problem for me

Ya that micro-HDMI is hilarious. I'm on the fence with this one... love my C70 but this R5C sure does make more sense for my workflow. Great review Gerald! Thanks for doing this one.
The C70 has better dynamic range still, which is the most important image quality metric in my opinion, and internal ND is such a leg up - but damn, full-frame, brilliant photo capability, noticeably sharper image (both the 4K and 8K) and no caveats when it comes to internal cine features, all for a thousand bucks less... This is a real toss-up for me.
One thing I don't think Gerald touched on (unless I missed it) was the fact in high frame rate (slow fast mode) you lose the face detect auto focus :( unlike the A7SIII which maintains eye tracking in 120 frames. Sound is also lost in high frame rate, although you have an option to record sound on a secondary SD card. ( I have and use both these cameras).
I'm still waiting for my R5C from B&H. I had noticed the DR difference in a few other hands-on reviews but no one dived into it. I'm glad you measured it. Hopefully we will see a firmware update on the AF to just give it a little extra performance.
Good stuff here! Have to say, I think I'm happy with keeping the same battery - The LP-E6 (now NH variants) have gotten better, and you can add a vertical/battery grip, get a wall/D-Tap adapter and of course use USB PD - so it feels like the options are decently rounded out. I do wish the grips supported the larger 1DX batteries, but they're costly.
I constantly am shooting photo and videos which makes it really tempting to ditch the C70 for this. Would love to have full frame and carry one body that can do both. However, then I’d miss built in NDS and better battery life. It’s a toss up and I can’t decide for the life of me🤦🏻♂️
If you rig your camera out just a tiny bit (e.g. with an external monitor, matte box) you normally use a external battery anyways or don't you? I have the FXLion Nano 2 and I never think about battery. Yes the internal NDs are nice, but there are excellent variable ND solutions out there which you can easily attach to any lens (or you do it in the matte box). Monkeypixels has a nice video on it and it is much smaller than his C70 rig: th-cam.com/video/S17UjaTN_VI/w-d-xo.html My setup is basically the same, except for the matte box (I have the one from SmallRig).
I still think C70 has a nicer image and a more filmic look and the built in ND's are a hard sell. Value prop for R5C is greater if your'e a hybrid but video only, C70 is a dream
@@prateek7728 the image is more soft on c70 .so it depends the look you want .r5c is going to be 8k more detailed look and full frame . you can get it to look like c70 look in post

Yikes, that micro HDMI was a huge mistake, other than that the camera is a freaking beast. Rigging it up for video would make a killer compact cinema camera.
It's a deal breaker. Micro HDMI is almost disposable, I refuse to spend more than a thousand dollars on a camera with it. It's the only reason I didn't get a S5

Not the most favorable port, but it's funny how it comes as a "deal-breaker" to casuals who don't make more than 5k/month with their videography business. A proper pro wouldn't give a damn, he's too busy with getting the job done instead of complaining online about a HDMI port type. 🤦🏻♂️
Having a micro-HDMI is not really much of an issue. If you're going to use an external monitor/recorder, you're more than likely going to use some sort of a cage. That being the case, you could easily attach a micro to full HDMI port converter to the cage, which will also act as a port protector.
I bought the R5 after your last review to pair with the Komodo and it's working really well together but I'm considering stepping up to the R5C but DAMN that micro-HDMI port AGAIN!!!! Why?!
Sorry, you can make photos in CineOS mode. They are limited to JPEGs, set video resolution and profile, but you can indeed make photos. You just need to assign the "Photo" function to a button first.
Great review Gerald. I've actually found the hdmi issue to be a plus for me at the moment as I only use that for an external monitor. I bought an Anker power bank to solve the battery issue as well as a dummy battery and I have to say that I'm really happy with this camera. Thanks for the tips on the noise reduction in camera.
Excellent review :) Been eyeing one myself as it really covers a multitude of use cases for cinema, including the Super35 crop which ends up around 6K resolution which matches my Komodo but with higher framerates as well as the RAW recording (which you can convert to C-Log2 in Resolve for full dynamic range). Should be a really good mode with the upcoming Laowa Nanomorph EF mount lenses :D
Its a mind bender in the sense that it is truly is two cameras in one. The mind bending is the fact you have to switch your minds mode when going btw the photo and video mode. It actually takes a while to get used to.
@@Mintyseden True, if you haven't used a Canon cinema camera, however, if you're familiar with the C200/C300/C70 menus and have shot with a canon DSLR or mirrorless for photos, it's AMAZING you get both in one camera. I truly love my R5C and am blow away by the quality of both photos and video every time I turn in on. :-)
@@cruachfilms Wobbly only with wide angle lenses, which can easily be turned off. And if IBIS is still considered awful in your opinion, then why was it in the R5?
@@rockmusicvideoreviewer896 it was in the R5 as that’s a stills first camera and has advantages there. You can never truly turn off ibis and lock the sensor, it can still move.
@@cruachfilms Well then you see that the point of my post was that the "Canon has taken that same excellent photo camera" and put it in the R5c is not true. Because it doesn't has that same IBIS from the R5.
It took me over a month to get used to the Canon Cinema Menu. But now I am loving it so much. Photo mode is wonderful too. Battery issue is solved when you get to know how much you will need for certain filiming occasions.
All canon ambassadors said that there is no benefit by using CLOG-2 over CLOG-3 in the canon R5C. I am happy with the dynamic range from the R5C in combination with DaVinci where I also use CLOG-2 color managed for the 8K RAW LT files. But I thought DR would be the same like if I was using CLOG-3. So your video is great as you prove that the canon ambassadors wanted to keep the R5C smaller than what it is. So thank you so much for this video :-). Would you say the R5C is in DR closer to a C70 or to a R5? Thank you for this kind of videos :-). I just checked out your C70 video, the C70 is at 13 clean stops vs 12.8 clean stops from the R5C and 11 stops from the R5. And if I understood it right, with a aggressive noise reduction we could have over 13 stops DR, so in DR the R5C is not really worse than a C70, is this right?
Does the canon R5 C lose the ibis that was in the R5? Won’t this affect the photography side of things for say tracking, quick moving objects in nature photography?
Wish we could map the circular dial & the joystick in video mode. Every other C series Canon body I 've shot with enables the function menu when the joystick is pushed in. Thankful to be able to record & magnify simultaneously on the R5c. Thankful for the 1.3x, 1.8x & 2x anamorphic squeeze preview in camera also
I know this isn’t a technical comment but a response to Canon’s styling and other intangibles (you could call this better “color science” and a better screen). My Sony A7Siii went off a cliff when a gust of wind came out of nowhere and knocked the camera and tripod over. I wasn’t sad - I had no reaction to try and save it. Of course, when I realized the money I was out, I was sad about it but I had no “connection” to that camera. I get the complaints about cripple-hammer Canon but it’s just such a joy to shoot with. The video quality from my C70 is better (more dynamic range and less digital looking) but my R5C is just such a joy to use. I think I would have risked diving off a cliff into the Colorado river to save this thing. Also, something no one seems to be talking about is the “Digital IS Mode” option that gives you “standard” or “high”. It crops more in “high” mode more but the stab on high with that RF 24-70 is incredible - definitely better than the IBIS on the Sony. My C70 doesn’t have this option and I wish it did.
How do you think the dynamic range compares to the Sony A7siii? I shoot real estate videos and have been using the a7siii. I’m pretty happy with the dynamic range when shooting in doors but I don’t like the camera much. It’s not fun to use. I’ve been wanting to switch when something else comes out. Hoping the dynamic range is really close.
@@chrismostek I honestly can’t say since I also own a C70 and use that when the shot needs higher dynamic range, although I liked the tips from Gerald about getting more dynamic range out of the R5C and will try that.
The real question I have is, do I wait for the R1? Am I going to get global shutter and internal NDs? Maybe IBIS? This is a significant investment and huge leap in making the perfect camera for me. I want the option to shoot professional quality video AND photo in the same body but to be honest my wishlist includes ND, and a global shutter. I would also prefer a better battery life as I’m not trying to bring vlock batteries everywhere. I’m not complaining, as you said, the camera is damn near perfect. I just want to know if perfection is on the way or if ‘almost perfect’ is the route I should go.

Hey Gerald, thanks for sharing your input on this camera. Great video, as always. Here's my two cents: The main three complaints that people keep mentioning is the HDMI, no IBIS and the video AF system. - Honestly, I get everyone's complaints about the HDMI. It sucks and Canon really shouldn't have done that, but just get a cage and an HDMI clamp and you're good to go. It won't make your camera that too bulky since it's on the chunkier side of the mirrorless camera world straight out of the box. Right? Also, since the battery life sucks, especially for video work, you'll probably gonna have to plug it into a V-mount battery or some other kind of external power source, so the cage seems like a necessity at this point. - From the reviews seems like the lack of IBIS can also be somewhat "fixed" with the use of stabilized lenses and digital IS. So, ok, while not perfect, at least it won't have that R5 AF wobble. And, of course, there are gimbals if you need buttery smooth and stable stuff. - Now, personally, what irks and worries me the most is the video AF. People will probably want to get this camera for its small camera hybrid workhorse potential. Regardless if it's their main or a b-camera to s beefier cinema camera (for example, for flying it on a Ronin or getting quick handheld shots) you'll probably want it to have good video AF. And, according to everything I've seen so far, the R5c's AF is.... Okay. Good for interviews and most talking head videos, but sub par in general. And this was, in my opinion, Canon's biggest mistake with this camera. But a fixable one if they add the option to use Dual pixel AF II in video mode as well (since the AF on the R5, R3 and R6 performs better according to ... well ... everyone). Otherwise, it doesn't seem to me that Canon has a proper offering to completely rival the hybrid or small video camera possibilities of some Sony cameras (the A1 in the hybrid department and the FX3/,A7siii in the small video camera department). Thoughts, everyone? Gerald, now that you've had some time with the camera, would you recommend the R5c camera as a run and gun camera (for example, for event and wedding videos), especially over the above mentioned Sonys?

So the 8K Cinema Raw light on the R5C is much easier to edit/color grade than the 8K Raw light of the R5? If so then I that is a huge positive of this camera! I figured out that when editing the R5 8K Raw light, using the Rec 2020 output color space instead of Rec 709 on Resolve 18 results in a much faster render on my M1 Max macbook. If the Cinema Raw light files are indeed easier to work with, then hopefully it will cut down render times even further.
Opinion from a Wedding hybrid shooter: I have the R6 and now the R5c for video and I made other experiences. 2 major and 1 minor Problems: 1. AF is compared to R6 extreme weak!! R5C has the „old“ Dual Pixel AF (same as C70 etc) R6/R5 has the Dual Pixel AF II which is much better. Why isn‘t it possible to put this AF on a 5000€ cam like the R5C?! 2. Batterylife: Sucks out a LP-6NH within 20 min Minor problem: You can‘t take Videos in Photomode! Why?! The R6 and R5 both can… I can‘t understand this. Switching from Photo to Videomode takes 6-7 seconds where the camera is off! It‘s hilarious. I really hope, that they will add the Dual Pixel AF II and maybe fix the other issues.
It's a video camera that shares almost all the photo features of the r5 . Plus more dynamic range ,no overheating! by the way overheating effects image
The Nikon D850 and D500 can use the D5 "popcycle" style battery. The Canon R5 C should have a grip that solves the pinky problem and takes a 1Dx "popcycle" battery. The grip could come with an arca swiss bottom and with cheeze holes all over it. Gerald, I love your content, your video, your lighting, and your audio. Thank you for what you do.
I’ve returned to canon with an R5c after switching to lumix for photography and your opening statement about build is spot on. I actually thought my R5c was fake! The build quality is strikingly toy like. Have to admit it was a little anticlimactic. Yes the feel of a camera is important. It’s literally the opposite of lumix when it comes to build quality and feel.

I didn't get a YT notification about this video for whatever reason and yes I am subscribed and I turned on all notifications so not sure what else to do, other than check back frequently. I want to say that I really enjoyed this video for a number of reasons. The main one is that I now understand what I've been noticing and seeing when using the R5C. I've only used it in 8K to 4K oversampled at this point and not for stills. So I agree that Canon is on to something special if they keep pushing. Thanks for the video!
Amazing review Gerald, as a owner of R5C,setting the internal noise reduction is a great info to speed up the NR workflow in post .In real world use ,I do find R5C do have very much better useable dynamic range as compare to my another eos r6.Hope there is more test coming up by working with clog 2 in raw .Came on Canon ,can't you give us clog 2 in xfavc?

But like, how would it get a different dynamic range than the R5 in raw video??? I feel like that has to be the exact same...Did you ever try denoising the raw clog 2 from the R5? I can see why the compressed codecs would be better in this camera because they're using different noise removal settings. But, fundamentally speaking, canon did nothing to change the sensor and the image readout in raw, and actually, the 8k Raw in the R5 is less compressed than the R5C. Can you do a test comparing them side by side?!
I’d like to know that too. Especially that now the Clog3 update came. I’d also be very interested what the difference is between the Canon RAW on the R5 and the Cinema RAW light on the R5C. It has been stressed that it’s not the same, but why develop two implementations…
@@lightningblender From what I understand, having spoken directly to canon reps about it, the R5C's implementation of 8k is 95% as good as the full size R5 8k raw, but is significantly more efficient. They said that if users ended up wanting the uncompressed raw from the R5, they would give it to us in firmware, but they did not think it was even worth adding because the difference is so negligible, which is probably accurate especially considering the data rate of the uncompressed r5 8k raw. So basically they just worked harder on optimizing the 8k raw on the R5C instead of just doing a 100% untouched read out from the sensor like the R5 does in uncompressed mode.
I am not completely sure. I still have my results from the 8K raw on the R5 and when comparing an 8K timeline in CLog3, yes, both the R5 and R5 C show 11 stops at SNR 2, but the R5 C shows more total patches of 13.4 instead of the 12.6 on the R5. And same with CLog2, Imatest only shows 14 stops total on the R5, but 16 on the R5 C. Then when I apply noise reduction, I can get the R5 up to 12 in CLog2, but the R5 C up to 13 with less aggressive NR. Perhaps there's more to the cinema interface than just menu options, maybe there is some level of image processing difference. Or maybe the decoding is somehow better for the R5 C in post. My first instinct was a higher bit depth ADC, but both are showing 12-bit, even though the R5 C is performing more like 14-bit. What's more though, you can visually see a difference in a real shot of the sky, and the R5 clips easier. So there's definitely something going on.
@@geraldundone This is most peculiar. I didn’t think they’d be able to improve dynamic range from the same sensor and same processor. But maybe this has something to do with the significantly higher power consumption in video mode. Can you remember if you enabled Clog when recording RAW on the R5? In the manual they write that one should do so but my questions to the Canon support team remain unanswered on why one should enable Clog/Clog3 when shooting RAW since that signal should remain untouched. Also: the R5‘s RAW cannot be uncompressed. 8192x4320x12bit x 24/s = 9.4Gbps no card can write that data. Some compression (maybe lossless but I doubt it) must happen. Also: No, I’ve never argued with anyone about this. I just find it super interesting what the R5 lacks compared to the R5c although they are identical on the important hardware level. I am however a little bit disappointed, since I own an R5, but I wouldn’t want to miss the IBIS.
@@geraldundone There's definitely something going on because my R5 blows out the sky so easily, and those shots you showed looked like A7s3 footage as far as to highlight retention is concerned. I guess it might be worth trading in my R5 for one then...I was hoping that wouldn't be necessary since I don't have problems with overheating :( Would love to see you put the R5 raw through the wringer against it though! Someone mentioned in the comments something I forgot! CVP made a video that showed the R5 having better Raw dynamic range in Clog 3 mode than when shooting raw in standard. It shouldn't be that way with RAW but there's definitely something fishy going on so maybe that will help the R5's case! LOL Exceptional video as always Gerald! You never disappoint!

I think the Z9 is better hybrid camera for me. Variable option for raw video resolution, IBIS, Video AF, battery life, prores raw, full size hdmi, the size of n-raw is half of prores raw and quick switch from still to video.
in terms of battery, is there a vertical grip for this camera? like with all fullframe Canon cameras where you can accomodate two batteries in that grip?
Fantastic Camera, and Fantastic Review. I use this camera as a daily workhorse, and one thing is annoying me, maybe it is possible to fix but I cant seem to find the solution. Maybe someone in here reads this, and know a work around. I want to save a presets that includes shutterspeed, Apeture, 2 card rec Functions, Main rec and resolution format/bitrate AND picture profile.... A quirk is that when I change from 4096x2160 to 3840x2160 recordings, my Sub Recording SD card stop making "proxies" and does not return to "Sub recording" state when I change back to 4096p again, no matter what I do (same thing happens from RAW, 10 to 8bit) .. furthermore I often shoot talking heads in a controlled studio, so it would be nice to have some presets that includes everything, like the R5 does.... Help?.... Anyone?....
Dammit. I wanted to write off the R5C as an half step up from an R5. I run a Komodo with an R5 as a b-cam, and the lack of DR, clippy highlights and muddy shadows was infuriating and a pain to match in the grade. I was concerned about IS, battery life, and power via USB-C, all points you addressed. I think I’m sold 😤

I can also power my monitor and transmitter with it (USB-C for the camera, USB-A for the Hollyland, D-TAP for the monitor). What’s nice is that even if the V-Mount battery dies, the battery in the cam acts as a backup. Thanks for the great video and for doing these dynamic range tests.

@@pickleydoo Yeah same here and I love the oversampled 4k60. I really underestimated the cinema OS and it's customizability. I use the custom buttons for quickly toggling focus peaking, false color, waveform and zebra all the time.
@@patrick.munich exactly. The oversampled footage in all modes is great. I had gotten used to using the crop 24p on the R5 for the best quality with no overheating. This opens up a lot of possibilities. It’s so customizable and all those functions almost replace the need for an external monitor (except for the size). I was going to get a second one for this camera but I think for now I’ll keep the Ninja V on the R5 and see how that works for me.
Use the Anton Bauer Titan base it has USB ..i would think it can mount on bottom of the r5c

Hi Gerald, great review as always. Just wanted to say that I really appreciated you mentioning dynamic range with different noise reduction settings applied. (For instance, Sony mirrorless has great dynamic range but is always a little bit boosted because the NR is automatically applied heavily in-camera.) This helped things be a little bit more 'apples to apples.'

@@PatrickBaker Oh so at 4k 60 it oversamples, and maybe from 120p too in full frame mode, just the quality is not as good, but still oversmpled, so the a1 4k 60 is not aversampled on ly from 4.1 or 4.3k, this is from 8.1 or something k, as i heard, right? I know the gh6 though its a smaller sensor, 4 times size reduction, but the 4k 120p is oersampled from 5.7k, how about the z9 and r3 oversampled 4k 120p? are they oversampled if so from which res? What camera has the best 120p 4k to date? Also a wuasiton which supports super 35 6k 60p and 4k 120p? I know the a1 only 4k 60pp oersampled from 5.8k but how about its 4k 120p in super 35 mode, and how about the other? Please help somebody!!! :))))

@@costinvaly1 When shooting in raw, your footage is able to be interpreted as c-log 2. There's no c-log 2 in camera though.
Not sure why no one has mentioned using the battery grip with the R5C, it’s what I order with mine. Gives me 2x the battery power and If I ever need more I’ll buy a few extra batteries. It’s how I used my R for over 3 years. In fact I find it a bit too small without a battery grip and front heavy with longer lenses. Maybe as a I’m a 50/50 photo and video shooter, it just makes sense to me to use the grip.

You can just use CLOG2 for RAW as Gerald showed. Canon says it doesn't make sense because the dynamic range is under 14 stops, but Gerald found the dynamic range to be better than with CLOG3 and I also saw another video where the CLOG2 is better. th-cam.com/video/R0ktq1-a8vA/w-d-xo.html
Clog2 makes much more sense for cameras like the C70 with dual gain output that gives clean shadow detail. A lot of the DR boost from clog2 is from the shadows.

1. Concerning the Dynamic Range chapter, in this video 12:50, mentioned "ST RAW + NR, ISO800 - CLog2" scenario.
I saw the frame size shows "3632x107 crop of 3840x2160", what does it mean?
As R5C only can shot RAW as 8K or 6K or 2K sizes, not able to shot as 4K size, how to make 4K RAW in this R5C camera ?
or you originally shot with 8K or 6K, then put it into 4K timeline in Davinci Resolve (or maybe Premiere Pro) and make timeline resolution 'smaller' to 4K ?
if so, take Davinci Resolve for example, shall I should change the Project Settings in Davinci Resolve like following ?
a). Shot footage as 8K or 6K RAW files
b). Project Settings --> Master Settings --> Timeline resolution = 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD
c). Project Settings --> Image Scalling --> Resize filter = Customer, Method = Lanczos
PS: I choose Lanczos method, some material in the website shows Lanczos or Mitcheel are the better way to 'smaller' or 'enlarger' the footage image, if original size is different compare to the Timeline resolution size. Not sure it is correct or not.
2. Concerning the "Noise Reduction - NR" here, ST RAW + NR, means shot footage as 8K or 6K RAW, and make Noise Reduction just in Davinci Resolve stage ?
Any possible to make Noise Reduction just during use R5C to shoot 8K or 6K RAW stage ?
During shot XF-AVC or H265 files, acc. to R5C manual can use camera internal Noise Reduction function, but to shot as RAW can have Noise Reduction also ?

@@Mintyseden Even with those I would have to add the CPL for the car windows and reflections so I will already be used to adding a screw-on filter to my lenses, so the ND filter I have also has a CPL on it as well so the no inter ND is not a problem for me

C70 all the way, built in ND filters, more natural 4k image, XLR, better battery life, raw to SD cards and full HDMI

The C70 has better dynamic range still, which is the most important image quality metric in my opinion, and internal ND is such a leg up - but damn, full-frame, brilliant photo capability, noticeably sharper image (both the 4K and 8K) and no caveats when it comes to internal cine features, all for a thousand bucks less... This is a real toss-up for me.
Personally for in built NDs and mini xlrs I think the C70 would be my choice unles you need stills. Well then it's hard to beat.
@@DaCarnival can get the speed booster for the C70 and make it FF too so it's a mini 4k c500 👀
One thing I don't think Gerald touched on (unless I missed it) was the fact in high frame rate (slow fast mode) you lose the face detect auto focus :( unlike the A7SIII which maintains eye tracking in 120 frames. Sound is also lost in high frame rate, although you have an option to record sound on a secondary SD card. ( I have and use both these cameras).
I'm still waiting for my R5C from B&H. I had noticed the DR difference in a few other hands-on reviews but no one dived into it. I'm glad you measured it. Hopefully we will see a firmware update on the AF to just give it a little extra performance.

Have to say, I think I'm happy with keeping the same battery - The LP-E6 (now NH variants) have gotten better, and you can add a vertical/battery grip, get a wall/D-Tap adapter and of course use USB PD - so it feels like the options are decently rounded out. I do wish the grips supported the larger 1DX batteries, but they're costly.

I constantly am shooting photo and videos which makes it really tempting to ditch the C70 for this. Would love to have full frame and carry one body that can do both. However, then I’d miss built in NDS and better battery life. It’s a toss up and I can’t decide for the life of me🤦🏻♂️
If you rig your camera out just a tiny bit (e.g. with an external monitor, matte box) you normally use a external battery anyways or don't you? I have the FXLion Nano 2 and I never think about battery. Yes the internal NDs are nice, but there are excellent variable ND solutions out there which you can easily attach to any lens (or you do it in the matte box). Monkeypixels has a nice video on it and it is much smaller than his C70 rig: th-cam.com/video/S17UjaTN_VI/w-d-xo.html My setup is basically the same, except for the matte box (I have the one from SmallRig).
the dynamic range is better on the c70 if you are pushing it to the max (due to the DGO sensor)

I still think C70 has a nicer image and a more filmic look and the built in ND's are a hard sell. Value prop for R5C is greater if your'e a hybrid but video only, C70 is a dream

Yikes, that micro HDMI was a huge mistake, other than that the camera is a freaking beast. Rigging it up for video would make a killer compact cinema camera.

Not the most favorable port, but it's funny how it comes as a "deal-breaker" to casuals who don't make more than 5k/month with their videography business. Having a micro-HDMI is not really much of an issue. If you're going to use an external monitor/recorder, you're more than likely going to use some sort of a cage. That being the case, you could easily attach a micro to full HDMI port converter to the cage, which will also act as a port protector.
I bought the R5 after your last review to pair with the Komodo and it's working really well together but I'm considering stepping up to the R5C but DAMN that micro-HDMI port AGAIN!!!! Why?!

Sorry, you can make photos in CineOS mode. They are limited to JPEGs, set video resolution and profile, but you can indeed make photos. You just need to assign the "Photo" function to a button first.

Excellent review :) Been eyeing one myself as it really covers a multitude of use cases for cinema, including the Super35 crop which ends up around 6K resolution which matches my Komodo but with higher framerates as well as the RAW recording (which you can convert to C-Log2 in Resolve for full dynamic range). Should be a really good mode with the upcoming Laowa Nanomorph EF mount lenses :D

Its a mind bender in the sense that it is truly is two cameras in one. The mind bending is the fact you have to switch your minds mode when going btw the photo and video mode. It actually takes a while to get used to.

@@Mintyseden True, if you haven't used a Canon cinema camera, however, if you're familiar with the C200/C300/C70 menus and have shot with a canon DSLR or mirrorless for photos, it's AMAZING you get both in one camera. I truly love my R5C and am blow away by the quality of both photos and video every time I turn in on. :-)

It took me over a month to get used to the Canon Cinema Menu. But now I am loving it so much. Photo mode is wonderful too. Battery issue is solved when you get to know how much you will need for certain filiming occasions.
All canon ambassadors said that there is no benefit by using CLOG-2 over CLOG-3 in the canon R5C.
I am happy with the dynamic range from the R5C in combination with DaVinci where I also use CLOG-2 color managed for the 8K RAW LT files. But I thought DR would be the same like if I was using CLOG-3. So your video is great as you prove that the canon ambassadors wanted to keep the R5C smaller than what it is. So thank you so much for this video :-). Would you say the R5C is in DR closer to a C70 or to a R5? Thank you for this kind of videos :-). I just checked out your C70 video, the C70 is at 13 clean stops vs 12.8 clean stops from the R5C and 11 stops from the R5. And if I understood it right, with a aggressive noise reduction we could have over 13 stops DR, so in DR the R5C is not really worse than a C70, is this right?
Does the canon R5 C lose the ibis that was in the R5? Won’t this affect the photography side of things for say tracking, quick moving objects in nature photography?

Wish we could map the circular dial & the joystick in video mode. Every other C series Canon body I 've shot with enables the function menu when the joystick is pushed in. Thankful to be able to record & magnify simultaneously on the R5c. Thankful for the 1.3x, 1.8x & 2x anamorphic squeeze preview in camera also
I know this isn’t a technical comment but a response to Canon’s styling and other intangibles (you could call this better “color science” and a better screen). My Sony A7Siii went off a cliff when a gust of wind came out of nowhere and knocked the camera and tripod over. I wasn’t sad - I had no reaction to try and save it. Of course, when I realized the money I was out, I was sad about it but I had no “connection” to that camera. I get the complaints about cripple-hammer Canon but it’s just such a joy to shoot with. The video quality from my C70 is better (more dynamic range and less digital looking) but my R5C is just such a joy to use. I think I would have risked diving off a cliff into the Colorado river to save this thing. Also, something no one seems to be talking about is the “Digital IS Mode” option that gives you “standard” or “high”. It crops more in “high” mode more but the stab on high with that RF 24-70 is incredible - definitely better than the IBIS on the Sony. My C70 doesn’t have this option and I wish it did.
You gotta get sandbags (waterbags) for your next tripod.
How do you think the dynamic range compares to the Sony A7siii? I shoot real estate videos and have been using the a7siii. I’m pretty happy with the dynamic range when shooting in doors but I don’t like the camera much. It’s not fun to use. I’ve been wanting to switch when something else comes out. Hoping the dynamic range is really close.

The real question I have is, do I wait for the R1? Am I going to get global shutter and internal NDs? Maybe IBIS? This is a significant investment and huge leap in making the perfect camera for me. I want the option to shoot professional quality video AND photo in the same body but to be honest my wishlist includes ND, and a global shutter. I would also prefer a better battery life as I’m not trying to bring vlock batteries everywhere. I’m not complaining, as you said, the camera is damn near perfect. I just want to know if perfection is on the way or if ‘almost perfect’ is the route I should go.

Hey Gerald, thanks for sharing your input on this camera. Great video, as always.
Here's my two cents: The main three complaints that people keep mentioning is the HDMI, no IBIS and the video AF system.
- Honestly, I get everyone's complaints about the HDMI. It sucks and Canon really shouldn't have done that, but just get a cage and an HDMI clamp and you're good to go. It won't make your camera that too bulky since it's on the chunkier side of the mirrorless camera world straight out of the box. Right? Also, since the battery life sucks, especially for video work, you'll probably gonna have to plug it into a V-mount battery or some other kind of external power source, so the cage seems like a necessity at this point.
- From the reviews seems like the lack of IBIS can also be somewhat "fixed" with the use of stabilized lenses and digital IS. So, ok, while not perfect, at least it won't have that R5 AF wobble. And, of course, there are gimbals if you need buttery smooth and stable stuff.
- Now, personally, what irks and worries me the most is the video AF. People will probably want to get this camera for its small camera hybrid workhorse potential. Regardless if it's their main or a b-camera to s beefier cinema camera (for example, for flying it on a Ronin or getting quick handheld shots) you'll probably want it to have good video AF. And, according to everything I've seen so far, the R5c's AF is.... Okay. Good for interviews and most talking head videos, but sub par in general. And this was, in my opinion, Canon's biggest mistake with this camera. But a fixable one if they add the option to use Dual pixel AF II in video mode as well (since the AF on the R5, R3 and R6 performs better according to ... well ... everyone). Otherwise, it doesn't seem to me that Canon has a proper offering to completely rival the hybrid or small video camera possibilities of some Sony cameras (the A1 in the hybrid department and the FX3/,A7siii in the small video camera department).
Thoughts, everyone?
Gerald, now that you've had some time with the camera, would you recommend the R5c camera as a run and gun camera (for example, for event and wedding videos), especially over the above mentioned Sonys?

So the 8K Cinema Raw light on the R5C is much easier to edit/color grade than the 8K Raw light of the R5? If so then I that is a huge positive of this camera! I figured out that when editing the R5 8K Raw light, using the Rec 2020 output color space instead of Rec 709 on Resolve 18 results in a much faster render on my M1 Max macbook. If the Cinema Raw light files are indeed easier to work with, then hopefully it will cut down render times even further.
Opinion from a Wedding hybrid shooter:
I have the R6 and now the R5c for video and I made other experiences. 2 major and 1 minor Problems:
1. AF is compared to R6 extreme weak!! R5C has the „old“ Dual Pixel AF (same as C70 etc)
R6/R5 has the Dual Pixel AF II which is much better. Why isn‘t it possible to put this AF on a 5000€ cam like the R5C?!
2. Batterylife: Sucks out a LP-6NH within 20 min
Minor problem: You can‘t take Videos in Photomode! Why?! The R6 and R5 both can… I can‘t understand this. Switching from Photo to Videomode takes 6-7 seconds where the camera is off! It‘s hilarious.
I really hope, that they will add the Dual Pixel AF II and maybe fix the other issues.

The Nikon D850 and D500 can use the D5 "popcycle" style battery. The Canon R5 C should have a grip that solves the pinky problem and takes a 1Dx "popcycle" battery. The grip could come with an arca swiss bottom and with cheeze holes all over it. Gerald, I love your content, your video, your lighting, and your audio. Thank you for what you do.

I’ve returned to canon with an R5c after switching to lumix for photography and your opening statement about build is spot on. I actually thought my R5c was fake! The build quality is strikingly toy like. Have to admit it was a little anticlimactic. Yes the feel of a camera is important. It’s literally the opposite of lumix when it comes to build quality and feel.

I didn't get a YT notification about this video for whatever reason and yes I am subscribed and I turned on all notifications so not sure what else to do, other than check back frequently. I want to say that I really enjoyed this video for a number of reasons. The main one is that I now understand what I've been noticing and seeing when using the R5C. I've only used it in 8K to 4K oversampled at this point and not for stills. So I agree that Canon is on to something special if they keep pushing. Thanks for the video!

But like, how would it get a different dynamic range than the R5 in raw video??? I feel like that has to be the exact same...Did you ever try denoising the raw clog 2 from the R5? I can see why the compressed codecs would be better in this camera because they're using different noise removal settings. But, fundamentally speaking, canon did nothing to change the sensor and the image readout in raw, and actually, the 8k Raw in the R5 is less compressed than the R5C. Can you do a test comparing them side by side?!
I’d like to know that too. Especially that now the Clog3 update came.
I’d also be very interested what the difference is between the Canon RAW on the R5 and the Cinema RAW light on the R5C. It has been stressed that it’s not the same, but why develop two implementations…
@@lightningblender From what I understand, having spoken directly to canon reps about it, the R5C's implementation of 8k is 95% as good as the full size R5 8k raw, but is significantly more efficient. They said that if users ended up wanting the uncompressed raw from the R5, they would give it to us in firmware, but they did not think it was even worth adding because the difference is so negligible, which is probably accurate especially considering the data rate of the uncompressed r5 8k raw. So basically they just worked harder on optimizing the 8k raw on the R5C instead of just doing a 100% untouched read out from the sensor like the R5 does in uncompressed mode.
I am not completely sure. I still have my results from the 8K raw on the R5 and when comparing an 8K timeline in CLog3, yes, both the R5 and R5 C show 11 stops at SNR 2, but the R5 C shows more total patches of 13.4 instead of the 12.6 on the R5. And same with CLog2, Imatest only shows 14 stops total on the R5, but 16 on the R5 C. Then when I apply noise reduction, I can get the R5 up to 12 in CLog2, but the R5 C up to 13 with less aggressive NR.
Perhaps there's more to the cinema interface than just menu options, maybe there is some level of image processing difference. Or maybe the decoding is somehow better for the R5 C in post.
My first instinct was a higher bit depth ADC, but both are showing 12-bit, even though the R5 C is performing more like 14-bit.
What's more though, you can visually see a difference in a real shot of the sky, and the R5 clips easier. So there's definitely something going on.
@@geraldundone This is most peculiar. I didn’t think they’d be able to improve dynamic range from the same sensor and same processor. But maybe this has something to do with the significantly higher power consumption in video mode.
Can you remember if you enabled Clog when recording RAW on the R5? In the manual they write that one should do so but my questions to the Canon support team remain unanswered on why one should enable Clog/Clog3 when shooting RAW since that signal should remain untouched.
Also: the R5‘s RAW cannot be uncompressed. 8192x4320x12bit x 24/s = 9.4Gbps no card can write that data. Some compression (maybe lossless but I doubt it) must happen.
Also: No, I’ve never argued with anyone about this. I just find it super interesting what the R5 lacks compared to the R5c although they are identical on the important hardware level. I am however a little bit disappointed, since I own an R5, but I wouldn’t want to miss the IBIS.
@@geraldundone There's definitely something going on because my R5 blows out the sky so easily, and those shots you showed looked like A7s3 footage as far as to highlight retention is concerned. I guess it might be worth trading in my R5 for one then...I was hoping that wouldn't be necessary since I don't have problems with overheating :( Would love to see you put the R5 raw through the wringer against it though! Someone mentioned in the comments something I forgot! CVP made a video that showed the R5 having better Raw dynamic range in Clog 3 mode than when shooting raw in standard. It shouldn't be that way with RAW but there's definitely something fishy going on so maybe that will help the R5's case! LOL Exceptional video as always Gerald! You never disappoint!

I would even argue the price is very close to the release price of the R5 when considering recent inflation.

I think the Z9 is better hybrid camera for me. Variable option for raw video resolution, IBIS, Video AF, battery life, prores raw, full size hdmi, the size of n-raw is half of prores raw and quick switch from still to video.
Would it make sense to use a battery grip that holds 2 LP batteries in it to help improve battery life? Similar to what I currently do with my R5?
in terms of battery, is there a vertical grip for this camera? like with all fullframe Canon cameras where you can accomodate two batteries in that grip?
Hello Gerald. You did mention we cannot shoot video when camera is in photo mode. However, I wanted to know if it can shoot stills when in video mode.
To get all the raw recording capability do you have to power it through usbc only or can you go dummy battery to dtap of a v mount or gold mount?

I use this camera as a daily workhorse, and one thing is annoying me, maybe it is possible to fix but I cant seem to find the solution. Maybe someone in here reads this, and know a work around.
I want to save a presets that includes shutterspeed, Apeture, 2 card rec Functions, Main rec and resolution format/bitrate AND picture profile.... A quirk is that when I change from 4096x2160 to 3840x2160 recordings, my Sub Recording SD card stop making "proxies" and does not return to "Sub recording" state when I change back to 4096p again, no matter what I do (same thing happens from RAW, 10 to 8bit) ..
furthermore I often shoot talking heads in a controlled studio, so it would be nice to have some presets that includes everything, like the R5 does.... Help?.... Anyone?....

Dammit. I wanted to write off the R5C as an half step up from an R5. I run a Komodo with an R5 as a b-cam, and the lack of DR, clippy highlights and muddy shadows was infuriating and a pain to match in the grade. I was concerned about IS, battery life, and power via USB-C, all points you addressed. I think I’m sold 😤
