2001 XR400R here , freshened up top end, Hot Cams stage 1, opened up exhaust, pumper carb.... I tightened up the valves a tiny bit more than Hot Cams wanted. I put them between the stock setting and the stage one settings. Makes way less noise. Its a fun bike. Makes quite a difference on mid/top end. I tend to run it a little in the rich side too. Not much, but a little on the safe side. Cant wait for warmer weather!

The 426"88mm' piston with Stage 2 Hot Cam is a blast to ride in the mountains. Has lots of low end and go power delivery at high speed. That's what I have. The Powerbomb header also on it and it really makes it a great woods machine. Really enjoy your videos! Keep up the good work!

A tip for removing the small 8mm bolts with less breakage: Take a hammer and punch, give the bolts a few good hard sharp hits, square on the head of the bolt. Before you begin, spray all the heads with penetrating oil. It won't get down to the threads, but it will work between the bolt head and rocker cover. Just try it. It works.

If there are any bow hunters next door they are going to love you come October. Quad seems solid that would be a keeper.

I have had two 416 builds A 10:8 comp piston from JE with a stage two hot cam it was just an animal of a machine dropped a valve and slightly bent the rod (I didn’t notice it) flushed bottom end of chunks checked everything over all looked acceptable to just be a top end rebuild so I rebuilt it. Put a 11:1 Wiseco 416 piston and jug new head new valves new valve cover everything installed by the manual road it maybe 3-5 times after breaking it in went out riding with my buddies one weekend and it snapped/broke the rod and sent it through the cases blowing the starter off never seen anything like it with the 400ex. It makes me happy to see another 416 living

I installed a few of these HotCams... Without the proper piston and jetting they are hardly noticeable... WebCams got a little more hit to them. The lobes let in more gas and you can hear the chop like if it was a high powered race car !

    • @shawnsatterlee6035

It's called duration. That's where the lope comes from at idle and higher duration equals more top end power. This cam is obviously a pure mid range cam. Nothing wild!

With all the upgrades, especially the front suspension because everyone knows that's the weak link on 400ex's. It's probably comparable to a trx450r or very close anyways, but way less fatiguing to ride. Good job Joe! Added comment...you now have property to build a legal top speed run test site. Make it happen when everything else is built.

My 2001 trx 416ex has the old stage2 hotcan. Now known as stage 3. That and my Ross 416 piston made that ex a rear ripper. I widened mine out to 49 inches wide front and rear. Im running stabdard length shocks front and rear with chrome aarms as well as chrome axle.
This think handles like its on rails. I also have a 2004 trx450r with hrc cam and widened out to 50 inches front and rear. The 450s power is unmatchable by the 400ex motor. But in my opinion the 416ex outhandles the 400.

Use of a true assembly luke such as gel lube or a moly paste on the new cam lobes would have been a better choice than the thin oil used for this install. Cam lobe wear and rocker wear on initial start up can be severe with improper lubrication.

IDC what anyone says man that valve train noise is not normal, don't use hotcams specs. I have a hotcam & wiseco 416 with la sleeve & ported head. I use to use stock specs with mine & it sounded like the factory level of valvetrain noise but you can play with the clearances a little & get it really quiet. You can not hear the valve train over the exhaust on mine at all. Iirc I think the specs I'm using now are .03 tight & .03 loose, & this thing is an animal.

As much as I don't care for 4-wheelers (I've seen too many serious accidents with them by ameteur riders and one death) I have to admit that the engine sounds absolutely strong. I put a White Bros all-around cam in an XR200 years ago + a big bore kit and experienced the same power increase(to a lesser degree with smaller engine)........seems like a VERY good combo for waking up the Hondas. It has run strong for nearly 25 years now with absolutely no complaints. I'd like to see this combo in an XR400. P.S. Same "rattling" with my cam change.......must have aggressive ramps on lobes. For the life of me I do not understand why Honda did not market "Staged cams" that would allow you to dial in more power and still have the factory "blessing". I very much enjoy your uploads, primarily because you do a good step-by-step analysis and then a fix. Also, if your Tacoma gets stuck you can pull it out with the 416ex - LOL. Keep the Faith, Tom

Joe, That Fourtrax is an animal. I'd love to try it out, you ought to get one of your other ATV's and have your brother race you with this monster. I'd bet this is close to a 500 with the big bore kit and the new cam. Bear Claw tires for the rear tires or the old Wooly Booger tires.

Measuring the overall height of the lobe means nothing without knowing if the base circle of the cam is the same. Valve lift is only part of the equation of cam performance. Lobe separation, lobe center line and duration all factors in as well as other factors.

I rebuild these things constantly for people, my only hope is it has new valves in the head. I have never rebuilt one that the valves didnt have a lip and on the verge of sucking up then dropping. Im editing this now that im further along in the video. When i rebuild these i do new kibblewhite valves and springs, rocker arms and timing chain with the stage 2. never have i had one that sounds like that. But they are fun and hella more power when the new cam is installed

if top end is noisy then its most likely valve bounce and weak valve springs after a cam upgrade

Bro I have a small youtube channel and I built a 426ex with a stage 2 hot cam and I didn't use hot cams recommendations for valve lash and it makes no noise what so ever in the head it's even more quiet than a stock 400ex

The way your “measuring” the lobes on the cam is wrong. The aftermarket cam just has different shaped lobes, not usually bigger or measurably longer. aftermarket cams or hot cams work by keeping the valves open for a longer duration, a machine shop can actually grind your stock cams and modify them to have the same lift duration as a stage 2 or 3 cam

Those valve clearances look a little loose. Did you make sure that you couldn't get the next size up in there on the feeler gauge? If not I recommend doing it next time. You should feel a light to moderate drag on the feeler gauge. I couldn't really tell in the video but it almost looked like no drag if not very little.

ltz 400 is another good quad all around and a little faster than a 400ex stock vs stock. The ltz 400 engine is super reliable bomb proof if you keep it stock with no engine work. I had a dvx 400 which is the same as a ltz 400. Never had any problems with it. I also had a lot of 450 atvs and they are not reliable at all if you ride the crap out of them like me. I still have a LTR 450 that is known to be the best handling 450 it rides on rails through the turns. I have went through 4 engines on the LTR 450 lol. All the way from stock to fully built 516 big bore stroker engine. I love 450 quads but they are money pits, id stick with an ltz 400. Built 450 quads can be faster than a stockish 450 dirt bike, which is hard to do as bikes are a lot lighter and less rotating mass.

sweet! personally if you are getting new tires, I would go through the trails and spin tires everywhere.....this will make the trails easier to use. burn them up dude! BTW, check out the latest vid. from grind hard! OMG crazy fast banchie with a honda 600 engine!

Ok, quick question for anyone. My son and I are installing one of these. For those newbies like us, mentioning the existence or lack there of, of the decompression pin and spring would be helpful. My son removed the old cam while I wasn’t around (not knocking his enthusiasm) I’m now not 100% sure there was or wasn’t a decompression pin. Without seeing it for myself. How do I know after the fact there wasn’t a pin and it’s now floating in the bottom of the block somewhere? One, the cam that came out of ours appears to be stock. Two, without modifying the stock came, would the bike even run without the decompression pin? I’m attempting to decide if I need to pull the clutch side case and look.

next port and polish and mill the head for more compression...or just a higher compression piston...or both...def notice a change....ps that slight difference in cam size aint that much of an increase...some yes...but it aint no thumper cam or rv cam haha jk
