Dude , you are a great mechanic. You don’t let your emotions get in the way and you work the problem. This is something that I’ve been working on , myself. I just built my first 5.3 LS engine and have been working out the bugs since. Previous owner did some crappy fixes and I’ve had to go behind and unscrew things he screwed up. 😭😂 But I’m slowly getting there and learning so much on the way. The biggest change that I’ve made was doing this because I want , to do it. Not because I , have to do it. That and trying to find answers to my own questions, by reading, watching videos and just Thinking , instead of “doing”. Changing parts doesn’t make you a mechanic and you don’t learn much by being a parts cannon guy. I don’t even work of off road stuff like you do. But I can really appreciate your ethics, patience and motivation. Great stuff brother !! 👍

Pickup coil is what turns CDI unit on and off and the CDI unit is what turns the Ignition coil on and off (spark). The pickup coil gets its signal to do its on/off signal to the CDI via the metal target on the flywheel passing by its sensor. This metal target induces a small voltage as it passes the the pickup coil. If you go back in the video you will see the flywheel metal target is uneven and appears to have collided with something (likely on another engine or an old pickup coil on this bike). The metal target is magnetized via the flywheel magnets. When you pass a magnetic field close to a coil of wire (pickup coil) then a voltage is induced into that coil.

Shock (from straining with a hammer or something else) and certain vibrational frequencies can change the alignment of the electrons in a magnet. They can also degrade over time, but a lot of time. Glad to see you got a leak down kit. Will come in handy Joe :)

Good to see you finally know what the issue was. Now you know to throughly inspect the flywheel on other bikes with a similar issue. Doesn't matter how long it took to diagnose the issue. All that matters is that you found it. Made for good videos too.
That one bike that you gave up on recently. Could've been an easy fix for it. I had a similar issue with my first motorcycle. No matter how much I tried, it didn't want to start. Was just a broken wire. Found the issue after letting it sit for a couple of years. There's always a fix for any problem. I do understand why you gave up on it. Hard to find parts make it almost impossible to fix. I found a solution for that with a bike I repaired. I had the part reconditioned. Cost a bunch, but my customer was happy. I'm sure you know the bike I'm referring to. If you didn't give it away, give it another chance. It'll at least make for good watching.

Glad you got it running!! Just as a tip for everyone, never ever hammer on a flywheel. Don’t even use a hammer to tap one onto the crankshaft. Believe it or not a sharp shock like a hammer blow can partially or even totally demagnetize the magnets in the rotor! I noticed the scars all over that bad rotor. I had this happen to me on an old Kaw 1300. I forget why I had to hammer on the rotor but afterwards it barely put out enough power to keep the battery charged. I even rewound the stator trying to find the problem. Replacing the rotor fixed it.

Hooked on your channel out of pure interest from the UK. Never had a motorcycle and haven't a clue on mechanical aspects BUT I have an inquisitive mindset and watching you fault finding is fascinating to say the least. However, getting back to the 'flywheel' and a remark made by a poster I looked up (I googled magnets) and this is what it said: Hammering a magnet repeatedly disrupts the movement of its atoms and affects the alignment of its north and south poles. This causes the magnetic dipoles inside the magnet to lose their orientation, and the magnet is demagnetized'.

    Absolutely great troubleshooting ,
Thanks for removing each part and finding your bad your one part causing the problem .
On your first video, you did look at the inside of the flywheel and said it looks good , so I instantly started looking elsewhere ... Took the carb and the flywheel off the list of possible problems from watching you rebuild it and your words ... it looked like the choke was on and I also thought that it was slightly loading up from the choke and then the spark plug ( serious observation) BTW thanks for pushing down - touching the choke , it sets high , ( smiles ).... Very difficult to troubleshoot over the big screen ( TV ) When you were at your property and had the bad flywheel in your hand I did see the damage to the pick up on it and as soon as you first took off I could hear it loading up ( Bog ) I was Happy that you figured it out and just not replaced everything and left it , Great Job -

Looks like the magnet on the flyweel or what ever was beginning to protrude out it, check to make the protruding piece didn't damage the pick-up coil or the sensor. The tolerances between these parts are pretty tight. For piece of mind please check it
Swapping out known good parts is good way to test the "Processs of Elimination". My bet would've been on the CDI or coil. The lead down test kit you bought, it's a perfect tool to test for any leaks. I'm glad to see you purchased it

    Nice fix!
Called it on June 30th for "Nobody Can Fix This Boggy 2-Stroke Dirt Bike". But I thought it might be the crank being slightly bent causing the magneto to oscillate around the stator as that's exactly how my bike sounded when that was the issue. Even with a new crank the misfire was still there and we had to replace the magneto/flywheel to fix.
Give the bad magneto a shake and see if you hear anything. Mine sounded like it had rocks inside.

Wow!!! I would have never guessed the flywheel. It's just not a part that fails that commonly. Magnets can actually demagnetize from impacts or heat. Whether that happened to the flywheel from heavy riding, the part being struck while the bike was getting worked on, someone using a torch or heat gun to loosen fasteners, or impacts from the impact wrench... obviously something happened to mess up the flywheel magnet. Wow... super lucky u had a parts bike to swap stuff around on. Otherwise u would've been stuck throwing parts at that bike to find the problem. But in doing so, u also fixed some air leaks and welds. I hope u can flip that bike for some good $$$

I personally thought it was a fuel line because I’ve had almost the same problem and it was fuel line collapsing, never thought about a flywheel, but now it completely makes sense!

You are only putting in 1 psi, that gauge is a gas line tester rated to 15 psi. I made my own tester using that same gauge available from Home Depot. Anyway, your flywheel can be tested if you shake it or twist it back and forth quickly to test for broken magnets. You can also test the number of poles by using a pick around the inside.

Congrats Joe!! I certainly wasn't thinking flywheel either. Glad you got it figured out!! The leak down kit is definitely a necessary addition to your arsenal of tools. As someone else mentioned, a smoke machine can be quite useful in testing air leaks as well.
I should put together and share with you the smoke machine I built out of a 50 caliber ammo shell container. Keep up the great videos!!
