      In my are N. CA would be lucky to get $200 for it. I saw a Honda 3 wheeler in about the same shape with an 85 CR500 in it for $500 a few months ago, but it sold pretty quick. I know whoever bought it just wanted the engine.

    When the seller said it was left for 20 years, I think he meant ‘… at the bottom of the lake. If anyone can do this Joe, you’re the man. If you succeed, you will be officially earn the status of Trike Whisperer.

    The cases themselves look good, but they're not hard to find or expensive. You can re-chase threads and or use helicoils if needed. Internals are readily available. Cylinders are not cheap, but not unobtainium either. Head looked good. Honestly might be able to salvage that cylinder with a re-sleeve or big bore. It's salvageable. I'd be looking at every option and part needed to get it running/restored versus what a running/restored trike would cost to buy. She's worse than rough. Good luck with it! Looking forward to the next vid on this one.

    I've cracked open a few rusted stuck engines and what I've found is that rubber mallets are best left to normal engines that are just slightly stubborn. Best results I've had is with a 8-10 inch piece of 2x2 pine with a good 2-3 pound hammer or a solid hard plastic dead blow. The wood wont damage metal and still has a solid jar to it. But you got the job done.
    My first thought was engine swap, but rebuilding lets you know what you have in it and that its done right. Would love to see a frame up restore and would give you lots of content. Either way enjoyed the video!

    You can use a heat gun for resorting plastics because it brings the original plastic to the surface, even if you do plan to replace them, it wouldn’t hurt to try.

    • @jimhimesjr
      @jimhimesjr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Heat gun and a thinner/linseed oil mix after do wonders for old plastic. Especially for what people want for old plastic nowadays. Got an old ke 100, the plastic was pretty whited out looking. Rear fender no better than what I had was around 75$ on eBay. Came out pretty good with a little sanding/heating/coating. Have done a couple bikes now. Takes time but worth it imo

    When you pull the spark plug and a moth flies out, you know its been sitting for a while. Bike had its own thriving ecosystem inside. Also, your ability to work on things without cursing is top notch. When you got the bike outside and started swinging the rubber mallet at the head with 2 hands, I know you were close. I've found aerokroil to be the best thing to get a stuck or super sticky and slow or not moving spark plug out. As long as you can get a tiny bit of movement, it kroil needs 1/64 of an inch of play to seep in behind the threads.. 30 minutes and it comes free like a new one!
    edit: it DOESN'T fix cross threading however.. yikes

    The stator bolt; Place the male end of a small socket extension against the bolt's head and strike it sharply with a hammer. This should loosen the bolt, if not, strike it again. Never fails me. This can even partially restore the slots in a phillip's head bolt (or a J.I.S. bolt)

    I'd use some commet.,an some Scott rite pads. With some Dawn dish soap scrubb it rinse it off with water good. Then wipes. Then use A heat gun over it lightly to bring the plastic back to it's original look again. I don't recommend getting to close to the plastic when heating it to light melt it to bring back the clear shine out of it again Joe.

  • @VE6KEE
    @VE6KEE ปีที่แล้ว

    I skimmed to comments to see if someone had input on the plastics.... I have had luck with a paint scrapper, to take the white down, then I used a heat gun to re-melt the plastic and that seemed work well. Heating them up gave them their shine and 70% of the color back. Better than anything I have tried before. I did this on a '77 DT400, they are not bright red but they look good. This method does not work if the plastics are too far gone, I have a '90 yz250 that sat out and they are too brittle for this method, even when heated back they still break. Hope this helps?

    You had me cringing on that spark plug Joe. As a retired elevator mechanic, I often came across things like this. The way I would remove that, especially in aluminum, would be to loosen it up a bit, apply some knocker loose and then tighten then loosen a bit more then tighten. Keep repeating. Overall your a great man. truly enjoy your videos. I have subscribed and will continue to watch.

    My guess on the plastic is paint thinner. Coat it over at night then in the morning use a wire wheel on a grinder and don't push down too hard or use a scraper to peel all the paint residue off.

    Very interesting watching you deal with the issues . That Lambretta looked tasty in the opening shots . I was ready for a rest myself .

    When it comes to sun-faded plastics, I’ve seen football and baseball stadium maintenance workers lightly use propane torches to bring the appearance of the sun-faded seats back to their original vibrant colors. Could that be worth a try here?

    I have seen people restore plastic using heat torch if your getting replacement parts might be worth trying on the old ones

    For the fenders paint is probably your best bet. But if you wanted to get crazy.... boiling them in red rit dye should work. It works on smaller parts. You just need a way to boil that much water.

    Try sanding down the plastics and see if you can get down to the red without taking too much off

    You can apply heat to the plastics with a heat gun that will bring them back round some. Sometimes even making them look close to new. just don't hold the gun too close for too long.

    First off the channel is amazing and so are you my friend..absolutely living my dream life...but i got a quick tip/hack for ya..them pesky exaust spring come apart super easy if you make a circle with a small but strong ziptie and hook it over the spring hook it gives you something to stick a screwdriver/prybar thru to easily extend the springs to take them on and off..you can pull the ziptie with your hand as well but some of those springs are 3-500 pounds of pull at max stretch...keep on keeping on my friend...(p.s. maybe one day we can hang out and go for a ride im pretty sure we live close to each other...if you ever need help with a project or at the land let a guy know) i got a couple honda big reds and a 200s

    Super glue works great to close the cracks in rubber carb. boots. Could always apply some silicone over the repair, but not needed. Super glue dissolves in gasoline, so not good to use in cracks that go all the way through unless you use the gasket maker on the inside first, then the super glue will hold strong.

    One of my neighbors had the same bike ,motor was shot and they put a 500 cc two stroke on it. It was a beast. The potential is there though and if anybody can do it you can. Good luck sir!👍🏼🤩🫡❤️

    I've seen alot of your videos, your very smart man. Tips are always nice but nobody has to accept them. I figured I may leave you one! Do with it what you think.
    I've seen where you get all the way down to the bottom end just to find its a piston rod bearing etc.
    At TDC rock the clutch basket or crank back and forth then rotate onto the middle of the piston stroke and listen for clanks as you rock the clutch basket or crank again. Also with head removed by appling small pressure down ontop of piston with your hand you can feel the clanks/thuds. May help you diagnose piston rod alot faster

    80 xr 500 engine fits right in. Splice the front of the frame to keep engine mounts. Extra weight keeps the front tire down.

    For your plastics, clean them up real well and use a torch on them. It will help revive the color.

    36:45 I love that sound of an owl nearby. I was brought up in the country, and I didn't appreciate it until I moved away from it. I'll be going back very soon. I'm done with "city life."
