The lap he had done just before this one was even faster at a 7:13. They didn't have the official timers on the previous lap, but GM's own data recorders captured the time. There is another video on TH-cam that discusses this 7:16 lap, and they mention that they did an even faster lap.

Yes they do, but this car did not even have those on it, it had the factory stock Good Years, thanks for making my point more clear, if they would have used the fastest Good Years the Mustang would not have run a faster time, but this run was about showroom stock, the Mustang run was not showroom stock, but yes Good Year does make the fastest dot street tire you can buy.

If they did bring out the current GT500 with track package and say Robert Kubica or Randy Pobst driving it would probably be faster than the ZL1 1le. The GT500s extra 110hp would do very well in those long straights. I always figured Ford would at least run their GT supercar around that track but I was wrong.
It's so easy to watch racing via on-board camera and allow the familiarity of it to completely hijack our ability to imagine what it'd be like if we were in the car. I've only had to countersteer at around 100 mph a few times in my life. Usually accidentally. And always grateful I recovered. This guys doing it ON A STREET CAR, on a road that's so much worse than anything I'd ever drive that fast in even a straight line. And he's doing it at the threshold of static adhesion while both braking and turning ... if not while flatout. I deliberately discipline myself to imagine what I would have the courage / confidence to do. And when watching this? I'm not sure I'd have the endurance of courage to even WATCH from the passenger seat for more than a few seconds. And I think most of us would be begging to be let out in order to walk within a few turns. Anyone who thinks otherwise who's never experienced this level of driving!?? Is probably lying to themselves. To me? This is just so much more impressive than the Radical SR8 hot lap ... bc it has DOWNFORCE. Which so drastically reduces the consequences of getting air. Of how much the suspension is unsettled by the undulations or bumps ... or even hitting the brambles ... And yes, mad respect to the fastest motorcycle lap on the ring also. Just death defying stuff. And requires more athleticism and perhaps nerves as you have to start the lean earlier in anticipation bc of how long it takes the physically transition leaning from one side to the other ... just the most tremendous levels of human talent and nerves.
We all watch this without ever really trying to imagine how we'd react were we there in the passenger seat. I'm confident that over 99% of us would be terrified. In absolute fight or flight panic and disbelief of what he was doing. Taking turns flat out in a STREET CAR with NO DOWNFORCE, bumpy surface at 140 mph, without lifting, continuing to put down 650 HP / lb-ft ... casually countersteering as required. I had a blast on the streets of willow. But even as someone who loves racing, owned a Supra TT that dyno'd over 500 lb-ft etc ... I was always incredibly cautious about taking ANY amount of turn at 100. And I'm talking the casual bends on the 405. Even though Rhys Millen has driven me around tracks, they were SO much safer than the Nordschleife. We're just all so used to seeing what race drivers do that we easily forget to imagine what REGULAR ROAD CARS are like. And few of us have ever slid through a turn over 80 ... let alone over 140. I think it's worth trying to imagine what YOU would need to decelerate to in order to attempt the turns confidently. Only then can we really appreciate what this man and this car are being pushed to do.
He had a couple of very good oversteer corrections on corner exits. Caught them perfectly and efficiently got back on power right as the chassis settled. Excellent work.
No doubt that the 1LE is a great car, but it’s only as good as they driver behind the wheel. Hats off to the driver, it was amazing riding with you, thank you for the ride! Amazing driving

The driver is Bill Wise, one of the engineers who helped work on the Camaro. He probably knows the car like the back of his hand, considering he helped design the suspension.
Driver was GM's test driver/ chassis engineer/ race driver/ team owner Jim Mero. There is an interview out there but it's a moot point since he's the ZL1 dynamic chass engineer who happens to be a pro-racer as well. 2014 - 2019 team Z06/ ZR1 also had another just like him named Bill Wise for their chassis tuning.

Tremec 6060, same gearbox as the Mustang GT500 and the Dodge Viper. Chevy even puts em standard in the $34k LT1 Camaros, while Ford is too cheap to even put it in the $60k GT350.

One thing I know about Germany, is they always speak highly about the camaro. They invite the Camaro to all the tracks, they never say anything bad about it. And they always say it’s a top 50 car. And when you look at the data and results the Camaro is the 47th best car on the Nurburgring track. Keep in mind some of the cars are heavy modified in that top 50 list. So the Camaro is even faster than that 47th spot. That is a testament to the Camaro and how highly it is looked at amongst its peers. Truly amazing.
Looked this up because I just saw a brand new (300ish miles) 2018 1LE w the Extreme Track Package (and every other option imaginable, carbon EVERYWHERE lol) at one of my favorite performance/exotic dealers and after watching this it's, shall we say, an enticing opportunity!. White on black, carbon hood, it's the best looking Camaro of this gen I've ever seen and obviously has more than enough performance to challenge just about anything on track days. If only I had this dude's skills lol! Savage. All for 1/3 or even less the $ than its comp. WOW.

Fantastic show of how impressive the ZL1 1LE is for a stock track weapon of a car. That Active Rev-Match was coming in clutch for some of those shifts and I'm sure the driver was loving that feature if he, in fact, used it.
That 2nd gear is nasty. Looks setup really well. And honestly look like some smooth power. Chevy did lots of homework on that power plant and drivetrain. Love my Chevrolets!!! Props to the driver! Made that look easy knowing there was a lot of driver work taming that animal!
Great time a day! Have owned my 67 SS350 for 47 years, muncie 4 speed with 4.10 posi and red lines at 5500! Would love to have a ZL1 to drive for a day! Even my 68 Cougar factory original 428 Cobra Jet C6 with 3.51 posi , and my 87 Grand National with TA66 turbo and ADS super chip with 3.73 gears and 2 1/2 inch flowmasters blush in the presence of such performance! Camaro is still my favorite!
I had a 67 BBC camaro I ran the qtr on Friday night (9.9@136) and then changed to my track tire setup and shock settings and ran the road course on Saturday usually finishing in the top 3 back in the early 200's. My current 850hp 17/ZL1 is faster, just as quick, way more comfortable and will track day like a champ!
I saw this car in person this week at the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. It's a pretty cool place. They have quite a few race cars from different eras all the way back to the early 20th century.

American iron came of age running flat out in a straight line. Big, heavy cars that relied on brute force to move them quickly. Porsche, Ferrari, those were track cars, cornering, braking, weight distribution. Akin to ballerinas, they were nimble. And by comparison to American iron, our products were like draft animals pulling a plow. And you see that still, even here, the driver is an absolute beast, whipping the Camaro for everything it’s worth. And holding on for dear life as he does. The car is not precise, he’s fighting it, flying on the razor’s edge of being out of control in every turn. Like trying to fly but with a rocket strapped to your back. And doing so with sheer mastery. Reminds me of Damon’s line: “It isn't about speed, Lee. It's not just like those other tracks where all you do is turn to the left for four hours.” And so it is here, an American muscle car running on a German track first laid down in the 1920’s. Ford vs Ferrari was about two men, while here we see the battle of machine vs. track. Showing that anything the world can do, American’s can do better, and at a quarter the cost. Brings to mind the P-51 Mustang. Out the gate our planes weren’t the fastest, but over time . . . And so it is here, so much of the American experience is illustrated. At the beginning of WW2 the German’s and the Japanese had faster planes. The Russian’s beat us into space, but the day you beat an American at something that he or she thinks is important, is the day you better start to watch your back. An American muscle car with a drag racing lineage on a German track fondly known as “The Green Hell.” And it is not poetry, this run wasn’t pretty. The car doesn’t glide silently around the track while a European V-12 whines from the back. The Camaro snarls and slides as it fights its way through the corners. And roars down the straights. Everything about this run is uniquely American, our way of forcing a square peg into a round hole. Ingenuity, hard work, and a little luck. It shouldn’t work, but we make sure that somehow it will. I’ve lived around Camaro’s my entire life. The flared wheel-wells of the late 60’s owned by a high school kid, bondo and primer, riding on wide tires, chrome Craiger’s, and a set of headers. The 70’s low slung, heavy and underpowered gas crisis cars driven by waitress’ who wanted something “sporty” but comfortable. The early 80’s cars, with anemic small block V-8’s that were slower than turbocharged V-6 Buick’s. The 90’s where the name began to reclaim some pride, re-styled and named “IROC.” Into the present day tactical fighters we see here. Al Oppenheiser says he’d like to see a Camaro run a sub 7 min time on Der Ring. But when asked how he didn’t have details. Which is perfect for America, we may not be able to tell you in the moment how we’re going to do something. Only that we have no doubt that if it’s possible we’ll find a way. A lot of people would tell you American’s are assholes, and having traveled abroad and seen “us” I can’t say they’re wrong. But no one can deny us, and in this $85k eater of Maranello’s and Zuffenhausen’s the proof, as they used to say back on the farm, is in the puddin. Watch this and be proud my fellow philistines, it’s American ingenuity and know, kickin ass. It’s what won the big war, and here shows the world we could do it again, if we had to.

It’s great the car is a stick vs an auto box. Typically, the slush box is faster by having 10 gears vs only 6. And yes, this is the point to point performance car bargain as of today. I’m willing to bet that if a “normal “ person were in the passenger seat, they would need at least 1 Depends if not 3 pairs. I've got the '17 ZL1 10sp, the LT4 s a motor that responds to even just bolton upgrades and it's by far the most bang for the buck beast on the road. I truly enjoy this thing beyond words.
Put it Tour Mode when you get into your neighborhood. That will help when you come home, but on a cold start..... well, you KNOW what I'm talking about. It just lets the whole world know it's awake and angry.

Right now after that power house drive I’m stunned . Quicker , much quicker than any other car I can remember. . . .? You can see the weight issues with this car but the power was huge . Be interesting to see the Z06 and ZR1 numbers they've been keeping from us. The ZR1 pulled over 30mph more in the strait away, around 207mph. Wonder how it will do against the leaders under 7 seconds.

The driver is Bill Wise, one of the engineers who helped work on the Camaro. He probably knows the car like the back of his hand, considering he helped design the suspension.
Driver was GM's test driver/ chassis engineer/ race driver/ team owner Jim Mero. There is an interview out there but it's a moot point since he's the ZL1 dynamic chass engineer who happens to be a pro-racer as well. 2014 - 2019 team Z06/ ZR1 also had another just like him named Bill Wise for their chassis tuning.

Tremec 6060, same gearbox as the Mustang GT500 and the Dodge Viper. Chevy even puts em standard in the $34k LT1 Camaros, while Ford is too cheap to even put it in the $60k GT350.

One thing I know about Germany, is they always speak highly about the camaro. They invite the Camaro to all the tracks, they never say anything bad about it. And they always say it’s a top 50 car. And when you look at the data and results the Camaro is the 47th best car on the Nurburgring track. Keep in mind some of the cars are heavy modified in that top 50 list. So the Camaro is even faster than that 47th spot. That is a testament to the Camaro and how highly it is looked at amongst its peers. Truly amazing.

Looked this up because I just saw a brand new (300ish miles) 2018 1LE w the Extreme Track Package (and every other option imaginable, carbon EVERYWHERE lol) at one of my favorite performance/exotic dealers and after watching this it's, shall we say, an enticing opportunity!. White on black, carbon hood, it's the best looking Camaro of this gen I've ever seen and obviously has more than enough performance to challenge just about anything on track days. If only I had this dude's skills lol! Savage. All for 1/3 or even less the $ than its comp. WOW.
That was extremely impressive driving, considering this is a manual transmission and not paddle shift!!

Fantastic show of how impressive the ZL1 1LE is for a stock track weapon of a car.
That Active Rev-Match was coming in clutch for some of those shifts and I'm sure the driver was loving that feature if he, in fact, used it.
That 2nd gear is nasty. Looks setup really well. And honestly look like some smooth power. Chevy did lots of homework on that power plant and drivetrain. Love my Chevrolets!!!

Great time a day! Have owned my 67 SS350 for 47 years, muncie 4 speed with 4.10 posi and red lines at 5500! Would love to have a ZL1 to drive for a day! Even my 68 Cougar factory original 428 Cobra Jet C6 with 3.51 posi , and my 87 Grand National with TA66 turbo and ADS super chip with 3.73 gears and 2 1/2 inch flowmasters blush in the presence of such performance! Camaro is still my favorite!
I had a 67 BBC camaro I ran the qtr on Friday night (9.9@136) and then changed to my track tire setup and shock settings and ran the road course on Saturday usually finishing in the top 3 back in the early 200's.
My current 850hp 17/ZL1 is faster, just as quick, way more comfortable and will track day like a champ!
AS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL A FRIEND HAD A '69 Z28 302 4 SP. I LOVED THAT CAR. I HAD A '66 STANG 289 .
The controlled slides are awesome, I love to practice those as I’ve made my 14 1le quite stiff
This is one of the most terrifyingly, adrenaline pumping runs I have ever seen! Talk about pushing a car to its limits!
Check out the 2014 Z/28 run. That one is just as crazy and the driver almost loses it when it starts raining.
We have a 2019 and every day with this baby is MUSCLE CAR HEAVEN back to visit since my 1977 6.6L Pontiac Trans Am.

I saw this car in person this week at the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. It's a pretty cool place. They have quite a few race cars from different eras all the way back to the early 20th century.

just amazing. That's how I drive my Camaro. Only difference is I'm just late for work. lol That dude bordered on the brink of control that entire time. And the way in which he shifted that machine was mind boggling. I wish to one day have an opportunity to drive on that track.

And I think the reason I continue to return is because in so many ways this video / run is a modern day Ford vs. Ferrari moment.
This car wasn’t designed for this track. Camaro’s aren’t track cars. American iron came of age running flat out in a straight line. Big, heavy cars that relied on brute force to move them quickly.
Porsche, Ferrari, those were track cars, cornering, braking, weight distribution.
Akin to ballerinas, they were nimble. And by comparison to American iron, our products were like draft animals pulling a plow.
And you see that still, even here, the driver is an absolute beast, whipping the Camaro for everything it’s worth. And holding on for dear life as he does.
The car is not precise, he’s fighting it, flying on the razor’s edge of being out of control in every turn. Like trying to fly but with a rocket strapped to your back.
And doing so with sheer mastery.
Reminds me of Damon’s line:
“It isn't about speed, Lee. It's not just like those other tracks where all you do is turn to the left for four hours.”
And so it is here, an American muscle car running on a German track first laid down in the 1920’s.

Showing that anything the world can do, American’s can do better, and at a quarter the cost. Brings to mind the P-51 Mustang. Out the gate our planes weren’t the fastest, but over time . . .
And so it is here, so much of the American experience is illustrated. At the beginning of WW2 the German’s and the Japanese had faster planes. The Russian’s beat us into space, but the day you beat an American at something that he or she thinks is important, is the day you better start to watch your back.

small block V-8’s that were slower than turbocharged V-6 Buick’s.
The 90’s where the name began to reclaim some pride, re-styled and named “IROC.”
Into the present day tactical fighters we see here.
Al Oppenheiser says he’d like to see a Camaro run a sub 7 min time on Der Ring. But when asked how he didn’t have details.
Which is perfect for America, we may not be able to tell you in the moment how we’re going to do something. Only that we have no doubt that if it’s possible we’ll find a way.
A lot of people would tell you American’s are assholes, and having traveled abroad and seen “us” I can’t say they’re wrong.
But no one can deny us, and in this $85k eater of Maranello’s and Zuffenhausen’s the proof, as they used to say back on the farm, is in the puddin. Watch this and be proud my fellow philistines, it’s American ingenuity and know, kickin ass. It’s what won the big war, and here shows the world we could do it again, if we had to.
The sheer skill needed to tame that beast at those speeds is unreal. What a beautiful machine and what a phenomenal driver.

It’s great the car is a stick vs an auto box. Typically, the slush box is faster by having 10 gears vs only 6. And yes, this is the point to point performance car bargain as of today. I’m willing to bet that if a “normal “ person were in the passenger seat, they would need at least 1 Depends if not 3 pairs. This driver is rocking and rolling through the curves, awesome video, thanks to everyone involved.

I've got the '17 ZL1 10sp, the LT4 s a motor that responds to even just bolton upgrades and it's by far the most bang for the buck beast on the road. I truly enjoy this thing beyond words.
278.4 klms an hour on that bit of straight road is amazing for stock standed.

Got a 2021 manual with a stupid payment and I love it only down side is that all my neighbors hate me.
Put it Tour Mode when you get into your neighborhood. That will help when you come home, but on a cold start..... well, you KNOW what I'm talking about. It just lets the whole world know it's awake and angry.

As fast as this looks people definitely will pass him. Cars doing low 7s high 6s. 7.16 is really fast for a Camaro.
Right now after that power house drive I’m stunned . Quicker , much quicker than any other car I can remember. . . .? You can see the weight issues with this car but the power was huge . Be interesting to see the Z06 and ZR1 numbers they've been keeping from us. The ZR1 pulled over 30mph more in the strait away, around 207mph. Wonder how it will do against the leaders under 7 seconds.
