- We are Susan and Eric, and we are travelling to Des Moines for another food tour, to show you where to eat in Iowa! This is the best food in Des Moines that we could find! We were in Des Moines like 10-15 years ago visiting my sister when she worked at the University. I barely remember exactly where we went but we ate some good food! Although, I’m sure the scene has changed dramatically in 10-15 years 💛

Try Splash or Jethro's if you're gonna do expensive stuff. But I just wanna say the best burger I've ever had was in Hornick, Iowa. I was working in Sloan and we stopped by and God damn that was a good burger. I can't remember the name but Google maps tells me it's Chance's R Bar. You guys should try it out.
To add, I live in Des Moines and haven't eaten at a single place you visited.
Also: Smokey D's, Smitty's tenderloin shop, Jerri's bar on the east side and maybe George's Chili King. Iowa food doesn't have a lot of nuance it's just deep fried meat and corn.

And chili king is closed and won’t be reopening because the owner died a few years ago and the daughter didn’t want to reopen.

As someone who is a native Iowan yeah zombie burgers is not really that good. It's just a version of smash burgers with a cool name. My brother use to work at the one in Ankeny and it went out of business. U would have gotten a better burger at b bops witch is a Iowa fast food chain. Next time your in des moines go to Spaghetti works or Hessen Haus

how you gonna go to some the worst places to try here..... *face palm* The main attraction of "el bait shop" is their large selection of beer on tap... so its a dive bar that has some food... hessenhaus has much better beer and food.... what about Thai Flavors, or 515 Pho.. and there are some AMAZING BBQ places... plus you guys didnt go to the West DSM side of things where all the major restaurants are at. Indian Star is really good on the north side... also yeah... the racism isnt constant but some people are just jerks. My Wife is Filipino. so Occasionally I hear those kinds of things as well...Tell ya what. if you guys venture back this way... hit me up.. ill be your food and bar guide.. promise you.. you will have a much different experience.. the world food fair festival is pretty nice though.. i must say they have great selection from many countries

I agree that zombie burger is not good. ANYONE WOULD TELL YOU THAT. But you completely overlooked the best restaurants in the Des Moines & surrounding area & There are NOT DOWNTOWN you should have asked some locals. Most of the best food is your mom and pop places

This is a horrible review and not even close to reality. You guys seriously came across hating everything. I have eaten at all of these places. Eatery A is 4 blocks from my house, I used to work at zombie, Saint is managed by my neighbor and bait shop is a local fav.
This review is just...... yeah... not accurate at all.
It's a review, lol. Everybody is going to have a different experience at these restaurants. Their feelings towards the food aren't wrong just because you disagree with them; that's the whole point of reviews, to hear other people's opinion.
Zombie Burger is a joke here in DM. I got food poisoning and easily the worse burger I've ever had. Tasty Taco should have been included as it uses less common puffy tacos.

I just can't imagine you really get all that good food options in Iowa lol. Iowa is completely devoid of culture. The only reason people live there is because they have no choice.
