You might be in Iowa if your favorite pizza comes from a gas station, and a pizza buffet has the best fried chicken around. :-)

    • @bdh3949

Absolutely true. I'm a native of Iowa, living in Minnesota, and that peculiarity called "Minnesota Nice" is a misnomer. To be "Minnesota Nice" means "pretending not to see something, yet making it clear that you did." For example, a motorist who breaks down on the roadside. The perfect "Minnesota Nice" response is to continue driving at the same speed, and looking straight ahead, but moving ever so slightly to the left as you pass.

lifelong iowan here. I'm moving to try something new but I will always have pride in this peaceful place. Northeast Iowa is one of the most beautiful places in the US in my incredibly biased opinion. Further from the Mississippi there are gorgeous little towns like Anamosa (grant wood country), Decorah (Norwegian af), Elkader, and Strawberry Point. Then on the river are a bunch of picturesque river towns like Guttenburg, McGregor, Marquette (Effigy Mounds National Monument), Lansing, and of course the queen of all of them, Dubuque. The whole state is a seriously unique and beautiful place that most Iowans I know take for granted. It's pretty common for people to leave when they're young and then return. Not going to lie, the culture shock was rough, and as nice as the people are, I've had trouble connecting or finding many things to do. Moved back home during the pandemic but going back out to Iowa soon to finish my degree in-person. This video made me feel motivated again to try harder to have an Iowan experience while I am there. Definitely take advantage of discussion sections in class, that's where you can learn a lot from your classmates and your classmates learn a lot from you. Iowa City is a wonderful city to live in and you can walk just about anywhere on campus. There is also a free bus system that will take you anywhere you need to go (especially useful in the winter). My main suggestion for winter is to get a good winter jacket ($100+), and really good winter boots with good traction. The neighboring town Coralville had a store called Scheels. They have anything you could possibly need for winter. Good luck!

Weather isn’t perfect in the summer or winter or during the bug seasons but, on balance, it’s a great place to live. Agree it is widely misunderstood by many as just fly over country. However, Iowans are quite happy with where they live and consider it a best kept secret.

Also, along with the cellphone service, you have to realize that there are still a lot of areas out in the countryside of Iowa that don't have high speed internet. It's a big problem that most people in town don't even know about. I'm a strickly Casey's BACON breakfast pizza guy. Nothing better. It's pop not soda (most people who say soda are transplants). Pork tenderloins are a must. Also visit the meat locker in every other town. Every one has their own specialty meat. NO one mentioned the Newtown raceway (Indy Corn race). This truly is the best place to live and raise kids....great education and safe. The only joke we often say is that if we donated the southern two tiers of Iowa counties to Missouri, the IQ of both states would double. Sadly, its probably true!

As an Iowan, specifically a Des Moines native, it’s nice to see people go through the state and look around. Lot of people don’t seem to think much, if at all, about Iowa unless it’s the Fair time or whenever the election cycle is coming up. And whenever Iowa is thought of, it’s usually regarding corn. Sometimes Bridges of Madison County is thought of, but corn is the big thing people think about. Thank you for the video man, take care!
