Shrek 2 is one of the few examples where the sequel is better than the 1st.

Shrek 2 is probably the best one of the franchise, so that one is for sure worth a watch. I remember 3 and 4 being fine as well as the first Puss in Boots movie. I loved Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The animation style is so cool, and there's a lot of heart and good lessons the characters go through during the film.

I would be all for doing the entire Shrek franchise with the Puss in Boots movies. The first 2 Shrek movies are incredible, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is one of the best animated films in the last few years.
Also Shrek Forever After, it's a great one.
@@ivanagustinortiz5237 Yeah, Forever After doesn't quite measure up to the second one, but it's definitely superior to the other two, and also a great recovery from what we can all agree was a pretty mediocre third film.
I agree, Shrek's story ends at 4 so far but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is such a good movie too. I would gladly watch all the movies with you guys. You can't just stop at the first!!

Jen should watch the Shrek in the Swamp Karaoke Dance Party from 2002 as well as the other 3 sequels from 2004, 2007, and 2010, followed by The Ghost of Lord Farquaad (2003), Shrek's Thriller Night (2011), Scared Shrekless (2010), and Shrek the Halls (2007). 🤞🤞

The short jokes were actually a real-life dig at the head of Disney at the time, Micheal Eisner, whom Dreamworks hated. That is also why his name is "Farquad" which sounds a lot like something else.

This movie is animated classic. It was the first movie to win best animated film at the Oscars since it was the first time they used that category, it beat Monsters Inc and Jimmy Neutron. I hope you guys watched the sequels. Shriek 2 is the best one out of the franchise, think of it as the Spider-Man 2 of Shrek
And Shrek 2 has a Raimi Spider-Man reference!

One of my favorites from my senior year of high school. I remember going with a bunch of friends to see this in theaters, and then my dad fell in love with it. So, we've watched it as a family so many times. A classic.
When Jen said it reminded her of her and Holden, she means that yes Holden is an Ogre and she is a princess, but deep down after sunset...Jen is also an Ogre

This is a film that further ignited my love of Film Scores. In the scene where the group is running from the dragon, the music always sends a chill down my spine every… single… time

Shrek is my favorite movie of all time! I grew up watching it and seeing the sequels in theaters. But the story, comedy, the pitch perfect cast, the stellar animation, the perfect pacing, and I can't believe Jen has never seen the film! You guys have to watch the sequels! Absolute love Shrek!

When we were kids, my brother and I would die laughing at the “boulder” line. It took all our strength to crawl up to the VCR and rewind it 15 seconds to listen to it again over and over.

As a short person myself (4' 11") I thought the short jokes were still hilarious. My coworkers/family/friends also tease me about being so short all the time, but I take it in stride cuz I like being short, it means I can squeeze into tight spaces and reach things they wouldn't be able to, and having small hands is helpful too whenever I have to fish something out between the car seats. Lord Farquaad was not comfortable with his height and over compensated and did things to make himself appear tall like the faux armored legs on his saddle. His inability to accept his height is what I feel made it so easy to make fun of him cuz you know that Lord Farquaad would feel insulted rather than teased, and you want to insult someone like that.
You sound like a super cool person! I agree with what you said about Farquaad’s complete denial of his shortness to be the joke here and not the shortness itself

I have been waiting for this, Shrek is one my favorite all-time movies, animated or otherwise. And you HAVE to do at least Shrek 2, and the Puss in Boots movies (specially Last Wish, but I found both good). Shrek 3 and 4 can be left out, unless there's demand for them... They're somewhat weak (specially 3).

I was a full grown adult - like 30ish when this came out- I know every line and watch it every time I come across it! I watch it more than my kids ever did.

Personally, if you guys decide to do more, I'd just stick with 2 and then Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. 4 is honestly pretty good, but 2 is the best of the Shrek movies and The Last Wish truly surprised me with how great it is!

I think Shrek 1 is one of the few movies where the 3rd act misunderstanding makes sense. They DID try to communicate, they were each just having their own conversations. THAT is good writing! So many other works just have one or both parties shout over eachother and refuse to listen.
Moreover, it only barely counts as a misunderstanding; if Fiona thought SHE was ugly as an ogre, what did that make Shrek? Was he just an "exception?"

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is absolutely amazing btw. Even if you don't watch the rest of the films, I highly recommend that one. It had no right being as good as it was.
I say they at least do 2, because it still is outstanding. But you're absolutely right: Last Wish has absolutely no right to be as amazing as it is.

If you notice where the mother bear is in the cage earlier in the film, later on, you can see that she is now a rug. Very morbid for kids 😂
I’ve always had the same feeling Jen had with the short jokes, I’ve always been a shorter guy and for me it was always pretty weird seeing a movie about self acceptance and accepting others the way they are, but then constantly making fun of something I and I’m sure a lot of other people have been a little self conscious about forever.
Other than that funniest animated movie, great animation and super fun to watch.
2 and 3 are definitely worth a watch if you enjoyed this one. They have great stories and continue to be original takes on classic motifs. 4 is a definite step down, and not very good. The latest Puss in Boots solo movie is quite good as well.

I also thought the extras on the DVD with the sing alongs was really fun too. The kids and grandparents all loved to watch and dance to that.

It is so rare for someone not to have seen Shrek so Jen's blind reaction was fun to watch! She had a really good take on the film's contradictory regarding everyone judging Farquaad's height, despite Shrek being all about acceptance despite appearance.
5:43 I see you guys got the version where there's an orchestra playing as Donkey sings! My DVD copy I got in like 2005 didn't have the music, just Donkey singing. They added the music in later copies of the movie so Donkey could do a very Disney-like thing, bursting into song with dramatic background music, and then Shrek (the character AND the movie) do everything to subvert all Disney tropes imaginable.

I always referred this movie as the ANTI-Fairy Tale. Everything you thought you knew about fairy tales was flipped on its head. Loved this movie when it came out. Loved the jokes that only adults would get. My son was 6 when this came out.
The message in this movie: dont hate yourself, because some day you will be loved

Chris Farley actually was going to be Shrek so much so he voiced scenes of the film, not finished of course because he tragically passed away. Then Mike Myers presented his version after hesitation taking the role from what his good friend Chris was going to do but did an absolute great job
When we watched Shrek on VHS with my cousins and it got to the Dulock song and Donkey said Lets do that again we always rewinded the tape! :) I think once we watched the song at least 5 times over before moving on :D

Fun Fact concerning Lord Farquad: The name Lord Farquad was a way to call him Lord Fuckwad in kids movie.
This whole movie was born out a feud with Jeffery Katzenberg of DreamWorks and the then CEO of Disney Michael Eisner. Jeff was the chairman of Disney Animation in the 90's and after getting passed up for a from promotion by Michael he left Disney and formed DreamWorks Animation with Steven Spielberg.
When it came time to make Shrek he made the villain of the movie Lord Farquad a wanna be king who is short, live in a big Disney like castle, is concerned with everything being perfect and bears a strong resemblance to Michael Eisner in terms of looks and facial structure as well.
Oh boy Jen should definitely see the bloopers were they fudged the hair simulation on donkey turning him into a bunny Chia Pet
