Kent Greenwood - thanks for your comment. We did see the bear grass in the visitor center after the hike. had no idea what it was while we were on the hike. We saw quite a few black bear. Only saw grizzly fresh scat and not so fresh tracks, though I'm sure they saw/smelled/heard us. glacier/waterton is a beautiful place.

Hi guys.....spectacular scenery.....mountains, lakes, waterfalls. One of the best I have seen for scenery. However you need a camera stabilizer and slow down on your pans. You seem like two neat people. Keep on hiking and sharing your hikes.

Great hiking in the middle of breathtaking beauty! Definitely something we'd like to do some time soon. We also have some videos of hiking in the bear country - Banff National Park, Canada, on our channel. We relied on our German Shepherd dog to ring the bear bell for us while hiking up to Smith lake in the mountains.

Wow, this has been one of the most scenic backpacking videos I've ever watched. The waterfalls are amazing and would make for beautiful pictures. You guys mentioned the Ice Age Trail in WI, which is pretty cool as a section of that trail is literally 100 yards or so from by backyard. Where are you guys from?
Ryan S Glad to help! Good luck with the lottery, even if you don't get it, know that it is possible to get day-of permits. If you must go that route, get in line early like 30 minutes before the visitor center opens and know exactly what you want. Don't the the ranger dilly dally on the computer because there are potentially other backpackers on the other side of the park trying to get your sites. I did Kettle Moraine north about 5 years ago in the summer time and the mosquitoes were just brutal. Glacier they were very abundant but less aggressive. From Chicago area.

This looks simply breathtaking. What time of year was this? I am planning a 4-5 day hike with my father in Glacier late this June and am attempting to create a loop for us. It will be his first backpacking trip!
This hike was end of July/beginning of August. You could easily make this trip into a loop by heading south after Stoney Indian Pass back towards Many Glacier. We played cards with a group at Mokowanis Junction that was doing that route clockwise. Though you might want to ease your dad into backpacking with a shorter initiation trip? +jackson mcgrath Thanks Jackson. We generally shoot for 10 miles per days. Since we were unable to get our ideal campsites, we ended up with a longer hike to Cosley Lake on day 1 and a shorter hike to Mokowanis on day 2. It worked out well for this trip because Cosely Lake was such an awesome spot to spend the evening/morning and it gave us ample time to explore those falls beyond Mokowanis Lake.
Thanks Steve. We were there late July/early August. Could have been better with a little less rain and a lot less mosquitoes. If you go, Cosley Lake campsite was awesome (much better than Elizabeth Lake) and Mokowanis Lake site looked very nice also.
Once you got to Waterton, was there a shuttle to get you back to the trailhead where you parked? Planning a trip and am confused with the whole travel situation. thanks
Thanks. We tried to get advanced reservations through the lottery and failed. Took a big risk driving all the way from Illinois to get to permit office before they opened to line up for day-of permits. We did not get exactly what we wanted (we wanted Elizabeth Lake instead of Cosley Lake, and Mokowanis Lake instead of Mokowanis Junction), but it was close enough to allow us to make the route we planned. So, yes, we did have spots reserved at each of the campsites.

The back country was not crowded. NPS does good work with the permits keeping it that way. I did not spend much time in the more populous areas, but I did notice the parking lots were always full.
We saw only signs of bear in the backcountry (fresh scat and tracks), saw a few black bear while in Many Glacier and in Waterton. According to other hikers, we just missed seeing some across Cosley Lake and swimming in Mokowanies.
+Adam Caulk Were you worried when walking through the thick grassy areas? I'm going to Glacier in 2 weeks. I'm worried about startling the bear on a narrow path. I will have 2 cans of bear spray , but still.
Yes, the thick stuff, especially the ones with berries, seem like a perfect spot for both species of bear. We were making noise (an annoying bell, clapping, and talking loud) to let any unsuspecting animals know we were coming. I imagine numerous bear saw us, but like I said, we did not see any in the backcountry. The NPS has you watch a bear video, so you will get more tips from them when you pick up your permit. Enjoy the trip!

switchback...zig zags in the trail up/down elevation so the traveler does not have to go straight up/down

Yes we took a shuttle through Tamarack from Waterton to Chief Mt Customs, then another through the national park from customs to Many Glacier.
