How to Grow Amaryllis Over Water // How To Rebloom An Amaryllis That Was Grown In Water

  • Here's how to grow amaryllis over water and how to rebloom an amaryllis that was grown over water! Fill a watertight vessel with a few inches of marbles, pebbles, or decorative stones. Nestle the amaryllis bulb into the bed of stones leaves about 1/2 - 1/3 of the bulb exposed. Fill the vessel with water to just below the base the bulb. The roots should be in water, but the bulb should remain dry. After blooming, transfer the bulb to a pot with potting soil leaving 1/3 of the bulb exposed. Treat as a houseplant for winter and spring. Keep evenly moist and fertilize monthly. After all danger of frost has passed move the bulbs outside to bulk up and grown more leaves. In late summer or early fall (and most importantly before the first frost) bring the bulbs inside to go dormant for 2-3 months. Place them in a dark cool place that is about 50 degrees F for at least 2 months. Do not water at all during this time and allow the foliage to die back. When you want them to rebloom bring them out of dormancy. Repot or refresh the soil. Water well and place in a warm bright location (70-70 degrees F) to bloom again.

    I'm so excited ! Unfortunately, when I purchased my last 5 amaryllis bulbs recently, I was under the impression that I was supposed to cut the old roots on the bulbs off. I later discovered my mistake. Now the bulbs have flower buds coming out of the bulbs but no roots for planting. So i put 2 of the bulbs in glass amaryllis bulb vases I had bought specifically for amaryllis. The vase suspends the bulb above the water. I saw today that one of the bulbs now has roots growing ! Yay !! So happy

    I inherited my late father's collection. Health got me started late, but 16 bulbs survived. I use your videos teach me to continue the tradition and learn how to get them to grow again. Two flowered sofar and the rest have great foliage. I hope this year and next year will make heart jump with joy. Thank you from South Africa .🤗🇿🇦

    WOW!! Your glass containers and amaryllis are spectacular!! You have inspired me to grow an amaryllis bulb in water! I planted my very first large amaryllis bulb in a clay pot with soil after watching your tutorial video on growing amaryllis a few weeks ago. It is blooming beautifully! Thanks for sharing your passion and great information on growing amaryllis with us. I am now hooked and looking forward to starting my own collection. 😀 I especially love the double petal varieties you have grown!

    I keep mine year round thanks to your leadership on the topic! I leave mine planted in their pots, I'd love to see how to get an existing bulb ready for water. I feel bad about pulling them out of the pots and cutting the roots, although obviously it's a practice that can be done since that's how they come from the growers. I absorb your every word on Amaryllis, thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I was given 3 "Exotic Star' amaryllis bulbs that had been exposed to freezing temperatures. On 1 bulb, there is a soft spot, but mostly they seem okay. I have never grown them before. I plan to grow them over water per your instruction. Do you have any advice to add? They were left overs from this past season. The card says they will bloom in 2-3 weeks.

    I love the tip of using the activated charcoal! I bought the small bulbs at a big box store a couple years ago- before I discovered your channel. Do you know if over time these bulbs will get bigger - therefore storing more energy to produce a bloom? I'm only getting leaves this year.

    Is it possible for you to make a video explaining how to care for waxed amaryllis bulbs. Specifically how to prune them in the house. I bought a number of them in Costco and there’s absolutely no direction included as to where to cut them. I’ve been picking off the flowers as they die just below the little bulb thing, but sometimes the stock has several blooms so I never know what to do and when to cut the actual stalk down. I don’t have any other plants and I’m terrible with anything to do with gardening, but I love flowers, so this is the perfect thing to have in my home since it re-blooms and ends up being cheaper than buying cut flowers every week. So I’m hoping you will make a video with close-up explanation of when and where to cut as well as any other tips for waxed amaryllis. Thank you in advance.

The roots might be too compacted and/or maybe the soil is too damp because I’ve had a couple rod on me and I pulled a bunch out and the roads aren’t looking white like they should be. I did soak the roots of some new bulbs that I bought in water according to the Cornell study but maybe the water line was too high? May I ask your expertise, please? I accidently dropped the pot which contains the amaryllis, so the majority of its roots got broken from the bulb. I dipped the bottom of the bulb into very shallow water in a bowl for a week aleady and I changed water often. Will this be the quickest way to make the roots grow out again? • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Laura! If an amaryllis is not reblooming it’s almost always because it was not able to store enough energy over the summer. Are you placing it into the garden all summer? Or leaving it in the pot? If leaving it in the pot try fertilizing at least once a month. I have noticed that mine planted directly in the garden need almost no attention and will always rebloom. However the ones I leave in pots do need the fertilizer and consistent watering to keep the soil moist. Without the consistent watering and fertilizer the ones in the pots do not always rebloom the next year. If you’re on instagram I can message you some pictures from books I have on reblooming and troubleshooting.

    I’m absolutely hooked on Amaryllis now I just had my first one bloom it has like 9 white double flowers that smell amazing and are so beautiful … also have some others that are pink and red and more whites to come I hope … I love them so much! I can’t wait to go thru the entire process and see if I can get them to bloom again! Thanks SO much for all the info… I could not have done it with out you!!!! 💚💚💚🤍🤍🤍
