My Passion for Amaryllis // Planting, Care, Reblooming and Creative Ideas for Amaryllis Bulbs

  • I've always loved Amaryllis. My grandma grew hundreds (maybe thousands) over the course of her lifetime, and I'm passionate about doing the same. Today I'll share details on bulb sizes and how to know when an amaryllis will bloom based on its country of origin. Then we'll talk about how to plant the bulbs, care for them as they grow, treatment after blooming, and how to rebloom the bulbs in subsequent years.
Here's an article I wrote on creative ways to gift amaryllis - blog.longfield-gardens.com/cr...

I have watched many videos on amaryllis and have been growing a number for several years. Your video is by far the best I have seen! I have probably heard it all before but the way you express yourself will now make me remember it. Your are a superb teacher and your friendly, warm personality shines through. I love your videos.

Thank you for this video! My wonderful neighbor and piano teacher gave us this amazing huge amaryllis bulb. He and his wife potted it in the winter and gave it to us as the green leafs just started blooming! I had no idea how to take care of them, but was super excited to learn! Your video has helped so much

Thank you for being so passionate about this fabulous bloom. It has enthused me so much and now I'm obsessed. I have a really old bulb that only bloomed one time and on my birthday at that, April 27. Since then, I never had let go of this bulb even when we moved 3 yrs. ago. She's still with and one day, to my shock, I saw a bud. I had kept it hidden behind a big pot of daisy under our covered patio and for about 3 yrs. now, just grew long sword like green leaves. I just thought it would never bloom again since I planted it deeply covering the whole bulb even after my senior friend gave it to me, first on the ground and now it's in a pot. To make a very long story short, I have a bud and 2 baby shoots that I have separated and replanted thanks to your tutorials. I don't know the kind I have but it's a dainty pink with a.bit of yellow. 🥰

My 1st grade teacher gifted me a single Apple Blossom amaryllis bulb. I am now 24 and I have well over 12 main plants and a ton of offshoots. I keep them planted outside since I live in the south with warmer climates. They bloom every year right around my birthday which is in April 😍 they are such a beautiful species of flowers!

Thanks for all the very useful cultural information and decorating ideas. I used to send amaryllis bulbs to my late mother every Christmas. She lived in Houston and they were perennial in the garden there (despite all the rain). Her husband once ran the car into the downspout of the house because he was distracted looking at the bed of magnificent amaryllis that grew along the driveway. I don't think she did anything special to them but they came back every year.

We live in East Texas and we can plant them outside and they’re perennial. We don’t do anything special. I bought one new this year and when it’s done blooming I’ll plant in ground in the spring 😻

I have about thirty I put outside for the summer and they are now resting in my basement. I also forced about 40 hyacinths in my garage. Whew, that’s a lot of information but as usual, Danielle, you explain everything in such a simple-to-understand way. Your enthusiasm for amaryllis is contagious. I had given up on them because every time I have bought them (@ the big box stores) they have never bloomed in the color depicted on the label. I prefer pink over red and they ALWAYS turned out red! Not exactly getting what I paid for but I have learned my lesson; any amaryllis bulbs I buy in the future will be from a reputable company! Thank you for this great reference video.

That does, indeed, clear things up! A neighbor gave me a bulb, and I didn't get the process of how to place it in dormancy, even though I looked online as to how I might do so. Now I know - of course - what I'm doing wrong! I was very afraid to NOT water it, too, so, I know not to be afraid; I did not water the bulb, but was wondering if I was wrong to not water, even though I was being told not to.
Your specific timeline of how to induce the bulb to bloom is very helpful - much more clear than what I had been reading previously, in other articles, and videos!

I do not remove leaves or flower stalks until they are yellow and pull off easily because the bulb is absorbing anything that it can from them to strengthen itself.

Thanks for the very informative video. Last year I treated myself to 3 expensive bulbs at a nursery, instead of getting the packaged blubs at the supermarket. The did great at Christmas. I transferred them to my balcony in the Spring and let them be, and to my great surprise I discovered new shoots in August. They bloomed just as great as at Christmas. Out to the balcony they went after blooming again. They have been sitting just inside my balcony door since the beginning of September. I added 3 new bulbs to the collection this year and they are starting to bloom now. Low and behold, so are the ones from last year/this summer! I did not know how to deal with them and just treated them like houseplants instead of putting them into dormancy. I think I am now addicted to get more and more as long as they are available this winter.

I’ve always loved Amaryllis, but never realized I could get them to rebloom past the first time. So, THANK YOU! I have a couple beauties that I just can’t part with and now I don’t have to. I’m partial to the white amaryllis, which tend to be in that lime green range. I’m gifting them to friends and making them extra special by putting an identical empty pot turned upside down, like a cover over the potted amaryllis. Then I’m connecting the 2 pots with pretty ribbon and glueing greenery on the top with a bow. They make stunning gifts and are always a hit. I put simple growing instructions on homemade tags. Thanks very much. I’ll direct the newbie amaryllis growers to your uTube channel. 👍♥️👍

Thank you for the video. You answered my questions. I really did not know about the bulb origins and how it affects the blooming period.

Love that you compared her to an advent calender. It made me smile :) That's the perfect way to describe this beautiful flower :)

Jus bought myself 3 for my bday 1st week of dec they’re already growing & came potted as kits in plastic roomy pots boxed! Got 1 white 1 pink and a red w white so I’m gonna start my indoor garden fall / winter garden adding these to my Xmas cactus bc seems I only do great w Xmas cactus!
esp compared to my outdoor garden of pot sunk flowers which believe it or not re seed themselves delightfully all over my garden, somehow … yay me bc if I was planting them I cant grow as much at all. So I let Mother Nature kick in and enjoy!
You give me inspiration that maybe I can add these to my fall winter blooming like crazy many Xmas cactus!
I totally dread seeing my outdoor garden die off in fall
Ive tryed bringing some indoors .. a fail… but instead now after this video…
I will pull out these amaryllis letting them b my winter months indoor garden since they are less water demand like my blooming Xmas cactus! Now I’m to let the leaves stay green like a house plant and in early fall like Sept. cut off the leaves end water and put em away til NOV about the time my Xmas cactus start blooming…. Wish me luck, I don’t like causing living plants doom!
Ps amaryllis like alotta sun?? Or jus good light like my Xmas cactus?
Well thank u very much for the video! Very cool indeed

New subscriber. You are just wonderful. I love amaryllis as well. Last year was my first experience with them. I’m trying to get them to rebloom. I did get three new ones a few weeks ago. The ones from last year were in those wax containers. I may have to through them out. You’ve given me so much knowledge and I thank you. God bless you and your family 🙏🏾

Your comment about telling your husband not to buy you presents because you just bought 10 amaryllis was so funny! I gave mine a list of all the gardening tools I want, but I want to buy one of them today, hard to wait until
    Christmas! Have a wonderful December

Susan, Thanks so much for your Video. I found your video as I was looking for information on how to put my Amaryllis into dormancy, as I have owned this one for better than 20 years, and have only had it bloom 2 X in all that time. Not knowing anything about it, I suddenly realized how beautiful this plant and flower was when it bloomed for the 2nd time, after we moved to Texas, having not bloomed in over 10 years. I had no idea (for example, that they loved to be root bound,(I learned from you) ha!! who knew. I purchased my first and only Amaryllis, at Christmas time(of course) while it was beginning to bloom. I have no idea what variety this one is, other than it probably has something to do with Christmas ha ha. At any rate, thank you so much for your information on how to cut them back, clean the root ball, and put them into dormancy. In learning from you, i was lucky enough to uncover more than 20 baby's and fully grown bulbs attached to mama plant, and was able to separate all of them. I am so excited it will be difficult for me to wait until the 6 weeks to 2 months time to take them out and start them growing again. I can hardly wait. Not much can keep me from tending to my new babies in the not too distant future. Thank you again for giving me the knowledge to now take care of this beautiful plant the way it was supposed to be taking care of. Until that time, I will be catching up on the rest of your video's on all the other bulbs you have videos on. Happy growing. Billie
