Putting Amaryllis Plants into Dormancy & Reblooming Them on a Specific Date / Amaryllis Flower Care

  • Today we're putting my amaryllis into dormancy so they'll rebloom next year. Dormancy allows us to control when an amaryllis will rebloom. Here's how I treat my amaryllis collection year-round. In winter after blooming remove the flowers and stalks to within an inch the bulb. If you grew the bulb in water rather than soil, transplant it into a pot with a drainage hole, leaving the top half of the bulb above the soil surface. After the bulb has flowered, it will send out 3 to 6 long, strap-like leaves. As with other flower bulbs, amaryllis use their leaves to produce energy for next year’s flowers. During this time it's important for the plant to receive plenty of light. Grow your amaryllis like a houseplant for the rest of winter and spring. After danger of frost has passed, you can move the pot outside for the summer. Continue to water. In late summer or early fall, stop watering and move the potted bulb to a cool (50- 55°F), dry, dark location. A basement is ideal. The leaves will gradually wither as the plant goes dormant. Leave the bulb alone and don’t water it.
After your amaryllis has been in dormancy for 2-3 months you can bring them upstairs to rebloom. There’s no rush, so if you have several bulbs you may want to start them at different times. Repot the bulb using fresh growing mix or top off the pot with new soil. Water once and move the pot into a bright, warm room. Water sparingly until the bulb is in active growth.

I had to laugh when you said you don’t know what comes over you when go out and buy more bulbs😂 the same thing happens with me. I don’t need anymore bulbs but each year I end up with more. Thank you for your amaryllis videos. I have learned so much and now I’m crazy about amaryllis!! There is something so satisfying about putting them in dormancy and bringing them out and having beautiful flowers in the winter.

Hi! Im new to this channel and was given an Amaryllis about a year ago. Its had 2 great blooms, never been out in dormancy but at this current moment the leaves are SUPER long, drooping and a couple are turning yellow. What do I do to help it bloom again? Many thanks in advance!

Last year was my first year with amaryllis and I LOVED them. I couldn’t just have 1 either. I started with 4 bulbs. I put them outside for the summer (zone 3 Canada) and forgot to bring them back in until October. So, I had to buy more bulbs (another 4) to have blooms at Christmas! I mean it was a real sacrifice, but I was willing! lol. Now I’ll have some blooms in the new year too!

After watching your other previous Amaryllis videos, I got bit by the bulb bug! I now have around 9 or 10 bulbs and I live in a small apartment! I had to stop looking at them on line as I have no space for more! But sure have fun watching them in their various stages of growth. Can't wait to see more videos on Amaryllis and your big haul! : )

I have only 3 bulbs but oldest of them is about 23-25 years old. And I never put my hippeastrum bulbs to real dormancy. I just leave them on windowsill with cacti collection at around 12-15 Celsius for entire winter with mild watering. They reward me with 4-5 flower stalks for that. Yep, they don't drop all their leaves and bulbs do increase in size during that period. I repot them usually in February when days become sunnier.

So glad you posted this. I’m in zone 9 Texas. Hot Hotter and Hottest. You talked me into getting an amaryllis. So I got the plant last year. I put it in the ground. It bloomed. Then the bloom went away. In summer I cut it to the ground. Then we had those 100 degree days (50 straight). Now I see the leaves are growing again and they are multiplying. I’m not sure what to do, do I will leave them be and see what happens. 🤞🏾 they come back. Nature will let me know.

I have enjoyed your videos on amaryllis and have for the first time purchased 3 of the large bulbs. Going well so far and flower shoots are coming along at different pace each. My question is about watering - so far I have given them 1/2 cup each once a week ... but surely as they grow they will need lots more. Did you put out a video about watering over time ? Or could you suggest how much they will need as they grow. ?

However I no longer have access to a basement space to store the pots during dormancy and I wonder if it would hurt the bulbs if I cut their leaves and remove them from their pots before storing in a cool cupboard?

Hi friend! I’m so glad that you are joining the amaryllis community! Amaryllis like to be snug in there pots. A pot that is approximately an inch larger all around than your bulb. Or you could say - there should be an inch between the edge of the amaryllis and the edge of the pot all around. I like the taller pots. I find they don’t topple over in those.

I buy a few new amaryllis every year ...when outside temps permit they go outside (Tucson AZ zone 9b). I water them and fertilize when necessary but never put into dormancy or cut leaves off unless they turn brown (I do cut the bloom stalks off when spent). I have them in filtered light under a mesquite tree so as to protect from the intense sun but they get adequate water. Every late spring (May - June) the older ones bloom. The new ones generally take a full year to recharge, they don't bloom til the following spring. So every spring I get lots of beautiful amaryllis and new baby amaryllis, and every winter I get new ones that I don't have. Total win-win! In the spring as the new flowers bloom, they come inside so I can enjoy them, then back out again to recharge for the following year.
I am bed bound and garden by remote control through my caregivers so this is the best thing for me.

You must have a money tree growing in your yard somewhere because amaryllis are not cheap…lol. I only say that because when I moved to Florida in 1972, Sarasota to be specific, I would buy amaryllis bulbs for $.25 or $.50 and now when I look at the prices, I just can’t believe what I’m seeing.
Some of the Amaryllis are so beautiful though with their frilly petals and their pink and whites and some of the colors that they have, they’re just not your basic red that we used to get back in the olden days. So there are, it seems like to me, way more varieties. Can’t wait to watch your unpacking. That should be fun. That’s what drew me to your channel in the first place last year.

@@yehoshuacirt8645 Once someone finds out how much they can get you to pay for something the price goes up. When I used to buy them for a quarter/$.25 in the 1970s, you could cut them in half stick them in the sandy soil and they would multiply like crazy.

Kudos on the great videos on your Amaryllis. Watching them is re-igniting my passion for these beautiful blooms... They are what sparked my passion for photography as I enjoy taking macro shots of the blooms.
I'm curious, where do you purchase your pots from? I like the look and heft of them...they appear to be clay of some sort and being tall, they appear to allow the roots to develop fully.
I live in a rented condo so have no basement to OW them in...however I do have a great south facing window so they get great light while indoors and then when I want to over-summer them, I plant them all in one big planter to mature outside.
Also, I've checked some of the websites you link that supply Amaryllis but sadly they don't ship to Canada. The nearest one would be Brecks but they don't have near the selection that the others have that you listed....(insert pouty face here). I have no idea why we can't get the same selection here that you guys get in the states. I had watched your unboxing video and was flabbergasted (in a good way) at the sheer size of those bulbs!!!! They were gorgeous.

    Happy New Year to you!
I have a quick question for you about amaryllis - so I stored my amaryllis plants in the cold dark basement for 2 months. I went down to take them out of dormancy and saw that many of them had sprouted tall buds that are light yellow in color since they didn’t get sunlight. I am so confused! How did this happen when I didn’t even water them or bring them out? Should I cut the sprouted buds and let the plant produce new buds or should I just refresh the soil in the pots and water them and put them in daylight?

But what you call Amaryllis are, unless I am mistaken, Hippeastrum which are plants from South America.
Amaryllis are plants from South Africa and limited to two species including Amaryllis belladonna, the foliage arrives after flowering and they resist the cold well, so we can put them in the garden... not like the Hippeastrums.

Hi Danielle! Enjoyed your video. Haven't had one for over 30 years. Somebody gave me one for Christmas. I heard they are not pet safe, not sure what to do since we have a few cats and live in the northeast. @3:40 beautiful display.

Thank you! I put my amaryllis bulbs in dormancy mid September, however took them out of the containers before placing them in the basement. Is that okay?

Is it better to leave the dormant bulbs in 70 or 45 degree temperatures? I live in vegas but I could use the fridge

My amaryllis just won't go dormant. I stopped watering them late July. Still strappy and green😒.

Danielle - love this video. I will search your other videos to see if this is answered but do I separate out the daughter bulbs when I take my amaryllis out of dormancy and repot it? Do I throw away the mother bulb or do you continue to nurture her and see if she will continue to bloom?

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  ปีที่แล้ว

You can separate them when you bring them out of dormancy or you can leave them attached for a year or two. I have done it both ways. Keep the mother for as long as possible. My mom had a huge bulb stop producing. I haven’t had that happen yet and some of my bulbs are almost 10 years old.

I took two bulbs out of dormancy because they had shoots. I think my garage isn’t as cool as would be ideal? Anyway, one bloomed right away but no leaves and the other green leaves but no bloom. Any advice is appreciated

I live in Mesa, AZ so I don't know if my Amaryllis will survive in the heat outside. I believe my laundry room is the coolest and darkest room in the house. Is that a good place for it?

I got an amaryllis bulb last year from Home Depot, it’s called Apple Blossom and after it was done flowering I cut the stalk off and planted it outside . Today I dug it up and it has a baby attached and lots of long roots , how to I proceed?

Last year, we accidentally forgot to put all our amaryllis plants outside. They were pretty young plants. The ones we put outside bloomed again; the ones we left inside didn't. They grew leaves just great but no flower stalk. This year, they all went outside in the partial shade. Hopefully, they will all bloom for us this year.

I have in the past tried to get them to rebloom but it did not work. Think I did it wrong, anyway this year I ended up having to put them outside as they started to get the little fruit like flies and I could not have that in my utility room. I could not believe it when my husband said one of them was starting to flower. I must have done something right, however none of the others did and I just continued to leave them out and we have had so much rain in North Lincolnshire UK. I am now wondering, as they are so very wet and probably still have bugs from being outside, can I take it out the pot and already put in fresh dry soil and then leave it to go dormant? Will it then maybe flower again sometime, I dont mind when I just can not deal with the bugs in my house. Thank you

So when you put them in the dorm and say they need to be in a cool area? I put mine into dormancy after they're done blooming. I put them in a dark cupboard until November and then pull them out. But mine aren't blooming.

Hi Danielle, I just brought my 3 bulbs indoors to place in the basement and one of the bulbs has quite a large bud on it.
Should I just leave it in a sunny location and let the bloom open?

Thank you for a very informative video. I have started to try to rebloom amaryllis the last 2 years. Last year was a flop, but it was because I did not do the dormancy period correctly. This summer, I started the dry/dark period in August for 2 months. But, I'm not sure if they got cool enough. Can the bulbs go into a refrigerator to "chill" during the dormancy period? I am stumped on what I need to know about the temperature for the dormancy period and if it's safe to store them in a refrigerator (airtight storage). Thank you very much.

I just purchased bulbs from a nursery and they say to put them in the crisper of your frig if you're not going to plant them right away. Don't put any apples in your frig. Apparently, that will sterilize your bulbs.

My first amaryllis purchase was inspired by your videos! I bought an Elvas last year and following your instructions it did great and produced a baby which I have already separated and grow on its own. Only thing is that when I dug the mother bulb up to inspect it before dormancy, it was a little smaller, not bigger. Do you know the possible causes and what to do to prevent further shrinking? Thank you for your content!

I live in Athens, Greece which means we experience hot dry summers and mild winters. I live in an apartment so I had the plant in the balcony with the leaves hanging outside so it took the most sun possible. I fertilized it with dilluted 3-4-5 fertilizer and I watered it every time the surface soil dried out.

Danielle, what do I do with the daughter bulbs? Mine are very small and I’ve already taken them away from the large bulb. Do you grow them as a houseplant for another year and then put them into dormancy?

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Pamela! If they have less than four leaves I would treat them as a houseplant for another year. I’m not an expert but that’s what I do with mine. My amaryllis from seed is staying upstairs until next year because of how small they are. I always wait until a daughter has the ability to flower before starting dormancy.
