    A few more things:
    1) I will be reviewing this bike soon as an adventure/bikepacking rig on an overnighter trip all loaded up. Stay tuned and subscribe so you don't miss out when I release that video.
    2) this is the most compliant/supple/comfortable bike I've ever ridden
    3) if you're a bikepacker who occasionally rides trails on their bike, this is a great fit.
    4) if you're a trail rider who occasionally bikepacks, I'd recommend something different as your only bike. It can still be ridden on trails as a dedicated trail bike, it's not quite optimized for that riding style.

      If I were to buy a suspension seatpost, would 350 and 400mm seatposts fit this bike, or does the tube bolt interfere with it?

    I recently rode the Stagecoach 400 route with my 2018 Pine Mountain on 27.5x2.8" Specialized Fast Trak tires and a PNW Coast dropper post. I've put 5,000+ miles on this bike at this point and feel like it is a great all-in-one rig. I wanted a multi-purpose bike to hit trails, pavement, gravel, and do long-distance XC and bikepacking with. I'm about to swap over and try some 29" wheels on it with 2.2" TeraVail Rutland tires. Been learning a lot along the way, but loving making customizations as I go. Great channel btw, keep 'em coming!

      Thanks for adding your comments. Great to get honest reviews, even better hearing owner reviews. I love how this bike rides but am hesitant to pull the trigger based on weight alone. My needs and uses are similar to yours. Occasional black and blue diamond but mostly rough gravel trips or play bike for days I don’t want to don the lycra. Any issues to date?

    Yeah so now I finished the review for me I considered a few bikes.... this bike, Surly ecr or ogre and the salsa timber jack xt. For me I think I made the right choice. I broke my neck 2 yrs ago and had surgery and am fused at C2/C3 and C5/C6. I get severe pain in neck and shoulders after an hour with too much reach or forward lean. Upright is a must. I went back to steel to hopefully help with suppleness. I felt the same... this bike it just crazy level of comfort. Never have felt that much comfort ever. Glorious frame. So for me that was my #1 requirement and this bike delivers. I can deal with the weight. I’ve climbed 3-4 mile steep forest roads and ripped back down at 35mph plus and have hit some big potholes and rocks and it took it like nothing. Looking forward to your bike packing review as I will also be using for that. Loved the possibilities of the handlebar for gear but that hand position angle is just wrong.

    I have one of these on loan from a friend and my god this thing is supple. Cattle damaged clay trails? No problem.
    It feels exactly how you described it on climbs “I’ll get t😢when I get there”
    Perfect bike for the rollers big east Bay Area hills where you get a lot of miles but not a lot of fun, this bike highlights the adventure aspect of putting in those miles.
    The bike I’m on has a carbon bar with maybe 25 mil rise and when seated it feels great, standing up though my neck felt a little tired from having to pick my head up a little higher to look see down the trail.

It’s great your honest about it’s intended use, adventure riding/backpacking. Can’t wait to see that bike in its element, with it being supple and comfy should make for a ride on a pack packing trip. The only set back might be the weight loaded up for adventure ride!! 👍👍👍💪💪

    Hey Steve I have this bike. Bikepacking is intended use and for some reason for me I found it rides light ( I'm used to full squish) So comfortable goes well on my local trails in Brisbane Australia. Dropper was to high for me (Size large) took the bolt out of boss drops all the way. Cut the bolt down to length put it back all good. Maybe something to try. Yeh those tyres are off look good though Love your channel my favourite by far. Cheers

    • @deleteyourselph
      @deleteyourselph 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hardtail party that’s crazy as I’d assume with QBP being as big as they are they’d send you one. It’s such a great bike. I use it as a xc/trail general riding bike. I’ve seen it set up as a trail bike (can take a 140mm fork), bikepacking, commuter, etc. I can’t explain how great the geometry is for ME. I had a Salsa Fargo, and it was great for gravel/adventure , but not as all around good as the KM to me. My only gripe is the horizontal dropout, but I understand why they spec it, and it still works for me. I will be going away from the 27.5+ next year with a custom 29er wheelset, but other than that it is spec’d appropriately for its price point.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ironically, Salsa (also QBP) got back to me. Terravail and Surly, no luck. I'd be worried about the horizontal dropouts too. I don't mind sliding dropouts if they have some sort of chain tensioner on them, but straight sliding dropouts seems like a corner that was cut. Everyone i've met that's had a KM has loved it. I'll see if I can get one for review. Surly is definitely resisting modern geo trends.

  • @nunyabizness5098
    @nunyabizness5098 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great review! Your dislikes are the same I had. I use a bottle cage with shorter bolts on the seat tube which allowed me to finally slam the dropper all the way down. Mine is also a size medium. I replaced those gosh awful tires with Maxxis Ardent 2.4 and dropped almost 2 pounds. I’m thinking of trying a different handlebar for trail riding but keep the original for bikepacking, which I bought the bike for and still haven’t done. Those changes have helped the bike a lot. But I ride it on the trails when I’m not in a hurry and just want to enjoy the scenery. Thanks again for your review and reinforcing the thoughts I had of the bike.

    I have a 2019 Pine Mountain 1 size L which has 27.5 x 2.8 plus tires. I don’t have a dropper and the seat rarely hits me. The large is a little less slack on the top tube which may make a difference since there isn’t as much seat tube to drop. Note: I did need to cut an inch off the seat post since the were hitting the bosses. The 2020 is a newer design which is why I ran out and got the 2019. Also got mine for $1k at year end prices, pre-covid. Great review. Spot on.

    Front end : can you twist the bars forward a few degrees for comfort ?
    Rear end : can you remove seat post bolt aka water bottle cage / bag bolt to lower dropper ? Do you waste energy with that much frame flex ?
    You definitely used this bike out of
    it's intended elements & you did a great job while your wife was riding

I own this bike ... agree with the seat post I have med and 30” inseam and so I yanked it and put on a setback Thompson and it’s better. Agree it’s a pig but the frame rides fantastic so love that for comfort. So pleased you also find the hand position odd. After 2 hours my thumb n wrists were sore. I’ve canted it more forward and helped slightly but they have to go. Like the 50mm rise so will look for something in that realm. Dead on with the sticky fork as well. I however love the drivetrain. Might swap in a xt shifter but impressed so far. Love how no matter the load on the cranks it seamlessly shifts. Ok... back to the 2nd half but just had to comment since we were so aligned so far. I have this bike from a couple years ago and I agree with everything you said. It does not reward you for riding it hard but rather going with the flow. Definitely mellow with a pinch of zen and your 70s stoner analogy was apt and pretty funny. I've changed nearly every component on it, but I think a longer stem was the first thing I changed. That said, spinning up a moderate grade is actually enjoyable on this bike. I'm looking forward to your proper bike-packing review of it. Perhaps you can get it into a forest, rolling in loamy dirt, tree roots and leaves and/or pine needles (road trip?)

    They must've changed it. I have 2017-2018 PM2+, Columbus Thorn tubing, came with a Fox up front for 3.25" tire. WTB scrapper rims 2.8 tires cost $3Kish. Mine is pretty good up-down & all around. Rear end looks the same as yours maybe 69° head angle... still Flexi in the back, is nice. Broke one frame because the rear axle thing was overly complicated and did not hold as it should have. replaced with Robert Axle Project maxle solid and good since. Marin replaced frame went up one size to large as Hesitation Point Bike Shop had that in stock and the medium was smallish. Still think its a great bike dare i say funner in not so steeps. way different than my Chromag Stylus ... Still the Chromag has it's charms.

    What exactly is weighing this bike down? I understand it's steel and it's not an $8000 bike. But steel companies like Kona and Ritchie don't have a problem getting bikes under 30 pounds, even ones in the price range of this bike. I had a '17 XL Cannondale Trail 3 with a boat anchor coil spring fork and mainly an LX drivetrain that weighed in at about 30 pounds even, maybe slightly less. And it was also just a little bit more than half the price of this Marin.

    Maybe a quick review with lighter wheels & better tires? I almost went with a rigid 2019 with plus tires(which I am told 2020 is now based around 29x2.6) that was in sale last Fall, but I couldn't find one in my size or one that was 1x. It was like $650 new & looked fun, but people told me the only con is it's weighty for it's spec.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That geo of the 2019 rigid was pretty old-school. It's too bad the pine mtn 1 doesn't have 12mm thru-axle dropouts and uses a QR. I'm sure you could run 27.5+ tires on this. I think it'd be fun, and probably my preference for bikepacking. Stay tuned for the bikepacking review of this bike.

      I would argue that you don't need an aggressive hardtail for those trails. That's not a dig. I know riding an "aggressive" hardtail sounds more hardcore than a trail/mellow hardtail, but for that stuff, the bikes you mentioned would be great. An aggressive hardtail would work out there, but you'd have more fun on a regular hardtail that's not crazy aggressive.
