- This video contains paid product placement for Freewheel. The latest bike to join Marin’s impressive line-up is the El Roy - a 29er steel hardtail designed for the rough and tumble world of downhill, enduro, and bikepark trails that’s still able to handle the tracks back to the top of the hill.
While the Californian brand might have its roots in dry and dusty terrain, the El Roy has clearly been influenced by the UK riding scene.
Five test mules were ridden on a wide range of tracks here in the UK to make sure they were ready for our steep, loose and muddy conditions. This has resulted in some of the frame’s features, as well as its geometry, which, it’s fair to say, is fairly radical!

It's an SLX cassette, not a Deore one :). Would like to have a ride on such a slack machine for sure, coming from my XC hardtail, haha!
@@OYeahan it looks like their demo bike got a slightly better spec.... on the marin site there's a lot more deore.. and you don't even get a shimano chain for the nice 12 speed shifting! Penny pinching 😂

@@jamble7k Hey i just picked one of these up and it is amazing. Mine in UK came better specced that this one, deity carbon bars and stem as well as the Gradient chainset. It absolutely shreds downhill and really is a great technical climber. I was expecting it to feel a little bit odd based on some of the comments on this review , but not at all, felt planted as soon as I sat on it . Its the most fun bike bike I've ever ridden.

The crhomag doctahawk has a 62 degree headtube angle.

I think the Assegai tire at the rear is kinda overkill. DHR II should be more than enough.

My Rocky Mountain Growler has 2.6 WTB Vigilante/Trail Boss. They grip more than enough. I swap to 2.6 Maxxis Rekons in the dry months.
I've been loving the maxx grip assegai/ dissector combo on my hardtail, feels a bit sluggish at times but downhill it's a blast
At this rate we'll be using choppers ( harley davidson ] for trails next year
They got the shifter and derailleur backwards. Should've put a slx derailleur and put a xt shifter on.

I don’t know a single person who still wants to ride a Shimano drivetrain on a mountainbike since SRAM revolutionized the 1x11/12 drivetrain.
@@rolux4853 plenty of people want Shimano for the durability of their derailleurs. Shimano derailleurs stick out less, doesn't hang down as much so it picks up less sticks. Can take a beating and still shift normal, has an adjustable clutch, on the xt and up shifters allows you to shift two 2 gears per push vs srams 1, you can shift up and down the cassette at full power without popping the drivetrain. I am running a slx derailleur on my gx cassette with a xt shifter.

s14tat the Multi upshift is the worst on Shimano, why the hell do I even want that feature when I can click through the gears on my SRAM drivetrain with the same speed?
But with a significant different, the Shimano just makes the worst clanking and ratcheting noise when multi upshifting, while the SRAM goes through the gears in a much more stable and controlled manner.
There are so much comparison videos on TH-cam where you can see it.
But the sound of it could be neglected, the feeling of that procedure is just the worst!
Feels like your chain got off for a second and you have almost no pedaling resistance, which is super dangerous to me.
Me and my fellow mtb riders stand by our opinion, there is just no place for Shimano in gravity Mtb!
But ride what makes you happy, I’m only interested in Shimano on road bikes and vintage Mtb.
those are some insane geometry numbers. i've comparison shopping aggressive steel 29ers for years, and 63/78 is the most radical thing on the market.

What happened?
When I think of modern Marin, I think of super fun and capable budget friendly bikes like the Hawk Hill 3 or the San Quentin 3!
And the Shimano drivetrain?
Come on, throw that stuff in the trash bin and get me the new 2021 SRAM GX for that money..
Also the Forks.. while I love the Z1 (at least they could have used the coil version for that bike, it’s cheaper, but way plusher which is amazing for a steel hardtail, especially with the amazing small bump compliance of a coil fork that takes so much trail chatter out of your ride) for that money on a Hardtail I expect a „real“ Fox 36 or a Lyrik!
While I love the frame, I’m super disappointed with the parts and the price point of that bike.
Ro Lux I will take Deore/Slx 12 speed over GX anyday, less clunky shifting, lighter and more reliable, sram just isn’t as good as shimano
This is definitely the way hardtails are going . So many steel brands out there at the minute all going with climbing and downhill geo in mind. I run a hello dave and its fantastic with great pike fork and gx group set for well under 2k.
Jim Smith yep, I ride a Brodie Climbmax. 67.5° front end and 430mm chain stays on a 4130 frame. I always get a kick out of watching my front tire so far out front on the trails. Lol. But when I point it down hill? Even on technical descents? It’s a demon. I can barrel downhill on trails like an angry bull. It’s super stable.
If i have known that brand earlier i would have a SICK bike now.
I have tried for months now to get a Ragley Mmmbop frame and because they always instantly sold out i still don't have one..

There are two types of hardtail rider. Those who can't afford a full sus and those who appreciate that sometimes less can be more. At £2300 the El Roy has to appeal to the latter group and I think there are too many boutique brands out there for Marin to really make an impact with a 15kg hardtail.
If it only was 2kg lighter...
I know it's a popular sentiment these days that a bikes weight dosent matter, and to an extent I agree in that I value durability to the expense of a bit of mass. But let's face it; lighter bikes are more nimble, easier, and generally more fun.

Old video but these are still relevant so it is worth noting that the media review components are higher end than what the bike comes with. Full Deore drive train (new 12s though), FSA cranks are one level lower than the Comet on the two bikes in stock at my LBS. And oddly, not sure whats on your review model, but they chose to stiff on a Shimano Hyperglide chain to match the new drive train. Still a worthwhile bike that pushes the envelope of modern geometry, with beautiful metal flake paint and super solid components, but worth note on the discrepancy.
My first Mtn bike was a hardtail and now after years and years of riding all types of Mtn bikes, I still prefer my aggressive steel frame hardtail. Although my bike has a more modern Geo than the stupid, skinny tire XC hardtail I bought 18years ago. I still don’t mind climbing it and it pretty much rails through most of the descent. The only reason I would choose a full suspension bike over my hardtail is for trails that had lots of jumps or long sections of rock gardens. Fortunately my usual local trails I’ve memorized and know where to land the jumps and the lines through the chunk. Having Rimpact with nice wide rims and aggressive from wheel sets from 29x2.5” to 27.5x2.8” , is really a game changer.
A Great review and a awesome looking bike . The only negative is lack of frame protection....as a steel full suss owner my bike came without downtube protection and I queried it ? Got fed a load of nonsense about it doesn't matter if Steel gets hit by rocks ....I know steel shouldn't weaken from getting dented but at the same time Steel is soft as cheese and dents will fook a frame .
Great Review. The frame does look ‘compliant’. Coming from an every day Chromag rider...
$50 to upgrade to an XT shifter gives you the 3up/2down shifting.
I built mine from a frame with XT wheels, SLX cranks, XT mech/shifter, Deore 6120 brakes, Domain 150mm fork, 180mm dropper and Aggressor/Assegai Tires for $500 less than it was to buy it from Marin in the store.

Honzo is awesome. I'd pick it over this bike. Elroy looks too heavy. 63 degrees is more than a hardtail needs, unless you are riding HT enduro or HT dh.
Really fancy this as a replacement for my Pinemountain 1 which is now 4 years old. At 5’7” I hope I fit the regular!

Looks very similar to my Rocky Mountain Growler except slightly more aggressive. The RM does everything. Probably not quite as sluggish as the Marin going up. The RM eats up tech and gnar.

It's definitely very similar in the geo number depot.
This looks way more aggressive than the Honzo. I have a Rocky Mountain Growler which looks very similar. The Growler is heavier than the Honzo, climbs slower, but bombs enduro trails like a boss, where the Honzo gets bouncy.

Usually Marin is a decent value at least in North America. Aluminum would have allowed them to make it cheaper than this steel design.

Steve B My Solaris Max at 28.5 lbs is the most enjoyable bike I’ve ever owned and that’s a lot of bikes. Riding mountain bikes since 1984..

the geometry is pretty similar to my bike (nukeproof scout 275 with a 160mm fork, 62 deg ha)

While I love the San Quentin and even more love a steel frame, the price of this bike is just ridiculous if you look at the parts list.
You can get a „boutique“ hardtail with SRAM GX, SRAM Code R and a Rock Shox Lyrik at this price, if you build it yourself.
Marin seems to forgot where they are positioned inside the mtb market.
Nobody will buy a Marin Hardtail in this pricerange.
Hell you can get their Hawk Hill for this amount of money.
I ensure you, I’ll have way more fun and will hit much more gnarlier stuff on the Hawk Hill..
Also I’d totally get the San Quentin over this, at this ridiculous price..
Especially the 2020 model which looks so much nicer than this and it’s successor!

Have you seen what people do to it?
They use it as a Slopestyle machine, like they also use the Santa Cruz 5010.
The 5010 also is labeled as a „short travel trailbike“ but nobody would underestimate its shredding capabilities.
Just because Marin labels it as a „short travel trail bike“ it’s not just for the casual ride out of your backdoor.
Also I don’t know why you label the El Roy as a Hardcore bike, it also has only 140mm up front.
The usual hardcore Hardtails have between 160-180mm of travel.
So I don’t think it’s wrong to compare these two bikes.
But as you said, everyone rides what he likes to ride.
And that’s his/her good right!

I believe those brakes are Alivio level. The MT-500 series brakes are the non-series Deore level brakes.

That made me really confused about horizontal position of seat related to bottom bracket. Is there even a "correct" seat position to prevent stress injuries.

I'm 5'5" based on the bikes geometry even the regular size frame might be too big for my height. Is this bike intended for taller riders?
baldy_13 the size is pretty basic. Why do you think so? Compare the ETT instead of reach to your current bike for example. Also has a very short seat tube, suits for smaller riders as well. Try modern geometry bike and you notice it is in every way better than the more traditional geo bikes.

Is the seatstay a little bit thin for a hardcore hardtail? I was planning to buy a local enduro HT frame with this kind of seatstay. I know its butted and its chromoly but im just curios why newer hardcore ht frames have this thin seatstays compared to its chainstays. Sorry for my bad english
If you're not sure abt it, just get a nukeproof scout dude. Got one myself, it's just a proven enduro ht.
it’s a cool niche bike, but I don’t think anyone would honestly prefer this over an actual DH bike for legitimate tracks. Just saying it can handle DH doesn’t make it true. The design also reminds me of the Guerrilla Gravity Pedal Head from a couple years ago.

I like the video, not the bike. I am American. I dislike American companies ripping off small, often non domestic brands and ideas/designs. In this case it would be the Pipedream Moxie from the U.K. Buy the Moxie.
how is this a rip-off of the moxie? they're both aggressive steel hardtails but it really doesn't go further than that, definitely some geo differences between the two, moxie utilizes a bigger fork, and the moxie is built around being able to vary wheel size and chainstay length.
The just HAVE to work on design on this forks.

The first glance made me think the frame was bent ita so slack.
I really don’t understand this less is more approach, I had a honzo st, it sucked. I mean really, climbing was hindered by the slack geo and relatively high weight, downhill was okay on flow trails but the second you hit a big compression your head angle steepens really quickly and tech is just stupid. For not that much more you can get a decent full sus that may even have warranty on the pivot bearings, therefore why go a hardtail? If you have the money, enjoy your self on a fun full sus, if you just ride flow with very little hard landings or anything then I guess this bike would work?
I bought a Norco Optic BTW, really similar bike in terms of geo but it feels way better and is much much easier to go downhill and climb!
